Armor Weathering with Confidence - Full Seminar at IPMS USA 2023 National Scale Modelling Convention
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 лип 2024
- This presentation was given live, 4th August 2023, at the IPMS USA Nationals in San Marcos, Texas. This discusses my weathering procedure, which I use as a general guideline to achieve confidence that I won't have bad reactions during weathering. Nobody likes ruining their finish!
We also look at the full step-by-step process on two models, to demonstrate that not every step is required on every model, and to show what products I like to use for weathering.

DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated. - Навчання та стиль
great that you post this up for modellers out of the US to benefit from!
Glad to share it world-wide :)
I think you have a lot of talent for that sort of thing! Speaking infront of a big crowd isn't easy and your confidence and delivery made this very interesting, entertaining and helpful. I am impressed indeed, excellent work on the models and the presentation! Thank you for putting it on UA-cam and hopefully you get the chance to do such seminars more often :)
Thank you Michael! I do get a bit nervous but I am not bad at presenting 😊
You are a master of your craft. I like the fact that each effect has a reasonable story behind it, instead of it just being "thrown on". Your work has a pleasing subtlety to it...bravo!
Thank you! I do try to put a lot of thought into the reasoning behind each effect.
Fantastic seminar. Congratulations.
So glad you recorded this
My favorite nerd. That is not a disparaging remark BTW. Thanks for allowing me to "be at" the seminar. The Panhard is one of my favorite vehicles.
Thank you! The Panhard is a very cool vehicle. This is the ICM kit, and it was a pleasure to build...I have a full build review of that project as my next video coming up!
Loved hte presentation , thank you for taking the time to upload.
Thanks for uploading your talk! I like your presentation style!
Thank you! I will have another one this July as well.
Excellent presentation! You have a knack for public speaking, well done. Adding the subtitles is a welcome addition.
Thank you very much! The subtitles took some time to type out (7500+ words!) but they are worth it in my opinion.
Awesome 👍👍👍
I couldn't make it to the Nats this year, great presentation/video Evan. 👍🙂
No worries, Tim. I'm glad I was able to meet you at the 2022 Nats. Take care!
Exactly, hope to see you again at another Nationals some year!!!! @@Panzermeister36
Well down. Mastery of the subject matter with smooth and confident delivery.
Thank you!
Excellent mate thank you!
My pleasure!
Mate you are like a regular scale model professor! Lovely content!
Thank you VMS! Your varnishes and retarder have worked super well for me on these projects :)
excellent modeler with a very honest personality.
Thank you so much!
Good job, Evan 👏👏👏
Thank you 😊
Great video!
Thank you for uploading this. I've watched so many build videos and always when it comes to my own work, I kind of forget the stages. I was going to writhe them down but now I've screenshot ted your guide. Thanks again. Allan.
Thank you Allan. I am glad you enjoyed it!
Good presentation
Nice Job, Evan.
Thank you Kentucky Dave :)
Nice!
Awesome video! Started building Armour kits again after 30+ years. Thanks for all the info!
Glad to help! Enjoy your return to the hobby!
top show.
Nice work!
Very confident delivery by a man that knows his craft.
Bravo, Sir! 👏🏻
I'm 49 and no way could I have spoken in front of a crowd like that, very well done
good job you did great n your are a awesome modeller keep up the good work mtg out
Impressive Evan! I like the Jagdpanzer a lot and i'm exited to see it finished on your channel! I wish i could attend the presentation haha.
Thank you Jan! I will do a more in-depth video on the Jagdpanzer for the next update in my buddy build project on it (and the sdkfz 250).
Great Stuff , would love to see how you go about doing crew scuffs etc on a solid Green T-34 or a Modern T90 or similar.
I do have a T-34 or a KV tank that I will feature soon in a video about weathering 4BO Green. And I have a T-90MS and T-72B3M that may appear soon too! I have too many project ideas... Lol
@@Panzermeister36 I always look foward to what ever you are working on . Yes the old problem of to many excellent projects and not enough time. The T90 or T72 would be great to see, don't get me wrong I love the the WW2 armour but it's been done to death. What ever you do I will surly enjoy your video and tips.
Impressive
Generous of you to share your knowledge and then post it online so, we can all benefit from it! 👍
Nice and interesting video :)
Presented in a nice and smooth way .
Thumps up for that.
Thanks for sharing buddy :)
Have a nice day there
Thank you Ozzy! It was a fun presentation to do :). Take care!
Great presentation👍👍👍I think a lot of work to do all the photos!
You should consider putting this useful information into a book.
wow
15:45 aww I love it when the crowed does small jokes. And good on you for not loosing yourself in the presentation
LOL, Invite the Canadian down in August, he will love it.
Hope you got a chance to run down to San Antone to see the River Walk and the Alamo.
Good information, thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Sadly I did not get to see San Antonio. Maybe next time....it would be cool to explore for sure. Instead, I got to hang out in the Austin airport for like 9 hours 😅
@@Panzermeister36 We live up near Dallas.
Airports bite. Next time tell them to help a feller out. I'm sure one of them would have took you around.
Great job!
Nice work
Really appreciate it , very informative and well presented
way to represent the Canucks
Glad you liked it! There were a number of Canadians at the show, which was awesome.
Very call to see this walk through tackling a scale model. Excellent ✨👍✨
What you have stated I would bet is all true.
This is so informative and extremely impressive that you did all this!
Thanks for sharing your seminar with all of us. It was very informative and well presented. Well done.😊
Glad it was helpful! Thank you 😊
Thanks for posting your presentation, did not make the bats this year, but will be at Madison
I'll be in Madison, so I look forward to seeing you there!
I wish other modeling videos explained techniques this easily. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much!
Absolutely excellent presentation Panzermeister36. It was very nice to see the complete process so well laid out and explained. Nice use of Powerpoint (from a fellow engineer ;))
So first of all, you did very well in your presentation. It was very polished and professional. I don’t know if you had any previous experience doing this, but it sure looks like you did. You might have been nervous, (or maybe not), but it didn’t look like it at all.
Second, how well was the seminar attended? I’m guessing you had a full house.
Nice job
Hello! Thank you. I had done one smaller presentation before, plus a live weathering seminar a few years ago at my local hobby shop. I was a bit nervous but it went well! There were between 100-150 people in the room. It was awesome 😊
Herrlich video. Danke.
I couldn't make it to Nats this year so I'm really glad to see to see this up on youtube. Making these seminars avaliable online is great! Will you be going to Madison next year?
I'm glad you still get to enjoy the seminar! Yes, I will be at Madison for sure. I may also present there... To be confirmed.
Nice video. Would have been good to have reference photos for dust grime effects
Yes, I would like to show references but I am apprehensive about putting them in videos that go on UA-cam as I can get in trouble due to copyright law. It's a bit ridiculous.
@@Panzermeister36could be a free Patreon post, with the reference photos side by side with middle and finished effects. Just a thought. ☕🐢
That's a good idea
Dear Panzermeister: great channel and tutorials. I’m back to scale modeling after 40 years now that I’m convalescing from major surgery. Can you briefly spell out which thinners go with which paints? That’s where I get confused. Dan
Fantastic job getting up in front of a crowd and speaking, and you sounded very well too, this isnt your first time speaking to an audience is it?
What kind of semi gloss are you using before the weathering? Is it an acrylic or lacquer? And what brand are you using?
It is the VMS satin. It is acrylic I believe, but it is durable in my experience against the enamel thinners.
I dont have an airbrush, is it still possible to hairspraychipping? Or will the acrylicpaint (thinned down with water) will already activate the hairspray thats on the basecoat?
Yes it is not really possible to do it without the airbrush, for the reason that you identified.
@Panzermeister36 thank you very much for answering so quickly! ❤️
Some of this seems pretty basic, although I do like how you broke your steps down, pointing out what techniques require a gloss coat, and which do not. This is important knowledge I don't hear discussed much. There are two things I think a modeler should do in order to up his game. First, get out and look at the vehicles. There are many aspects that are apparent IRL that don't come through well in pictures. Things like road wheel rubber cracking, scratches and worn paint around hatches, rain streaks, ect. When you see a vehicle outdoors IRL you will always see rain streaks. You can hardly see these at all in pictures. My second recommendation is to always use a picture when weathering. Never go by the seat of your pants. Never ever ever.
Thank you for the comment! I do agree...I always find a photo or two to guide my project. Otherwise I find I use too many different techniques and the model's finish becomes too much.
I hope that with all these 3D-printed accessories, we do get some designs with realistically cracked rubber. It's hard to achieve convincingly by just hacking some molded plastic off the wheels!
most of the time the most basic techniques are the "best" or "easiest",but maybe not for every single person on earth though
The with confidence bit got me smiling. I've just got to the point where I'm building models pretty much mistake free and laying down decent paint jobs that the apprehension of potentially 'ruining the model' with weathering is very much a real feel!
Buy a RAL colour chart!
Well the ones you can buy are the modern RAL codes which do not match the original wartime hues and saturations. So maybe I shouldn't.
Throw that VMS crap varnish away and get you some Winsor & Newton Galeria varnish. Everyone's over paying for VMS. Plenty of better, cheaper or laterally priced stuff out there.
I've had nothing but great results with the VMS varnishes. But, I have not tried what you recommend so I will investigate. I am always open to new options!
@@Panzermeister36 Maybe I've had a stream of bad bottles but the VMS just fell apart anytime I've used enamels. W&N is like a dang coat of carbide when it dries. Love your stuff!
Make sure to add an extra thick layer of matt varnish after everything, because fat sweaty cheeto fingered IPMS judges like to pick up your tanks.
Cheetos and soft chocolate bars will be the snacks given out halfway through judging next year. Extra sticky 😂
What, no pizza grease on fingers?
The "Dunkelgelb" is too yellow...
I've got a return roller with original paint on it about 3 feet to my left right now, and it's -- as best as I can describe -- mustard yellow. More yellow than my Jagdpanzer for sure. And no, it hasn't faded. It's a base oxide and chemically cannot decompose further.
Great presentation my friend. This video should be equal to a fat book of painting and weathring techniquws. Also, it must save permanently. lol
Have good time and stay safe please my friend. Cheers, NOB
Thank you NOB! I am glad you enjoyed the presentation. It is available to a much wider audience, so I am glad I was able to film it.
