  • Crimson Queen is renowned for its striking spring colors, featuring dark maroon lace-like foliage that retains its richness even in shaded areas. It transitions from deep maroon in spring to light red, culminating in vibrant scarlet reds during fall. This Japanese maple forms a low, cascading umbrella shape, ideal for focal points or container gardens in shaded spots. It thrives in zones five to nine, excelling with good drainage and protection from hot afternoon sun. Known for its intricately divided leaves and vivid colors, Crimson Queen is celebrated as one of the most popular and memorable Japanese maple varieties worldwide.

Hey Matt and Tim! My name is Christina and I live in New Orleans, LA, zone 9, and I am looking to purchase a Japanese Maple tree for a container. I know I’m at the very bottom/top of the zoning for a Jap Maple, so I know it’s probably not the best environment for this tree, but I just love them so much, I have to have one! So I’m looking for something smaller, possibly a dwarf, to fit into a large container. I’ve had a few suggestions from people saying the Beni Maiko, Kamagata, or the Seiryu would be the best types to grow in a zone 9, but after extensively checking them all out, I’m not really into any of them. I’m looking for that bright, eye-catching crimson red color. I don’t care whether it’s the lace leaf style or the regular style leaf, I like both! My only thing is I want the brightest red possible, ha ha! Do you have any suggestions? With all the information I gave you, do you think you could suggest one or more Jap Maples that would be good for my zone?
P.s. Please give me your best suggestion. Even if it is out of stock at the moment, I would rather get on an email list and wait to purchase the right tree

If mine looks much larger than the one you are showing how old do you think it is? I was told it was transplanted around 1959-60 from the previous home of the owner, not sure if it was already in a container or dug up and moved. It is on a hill and so drains well.

Japanese Maples work zones 5-9 so 4 is to cold. It will need to be brought into an area that is water but still maintaining dormancy

My dad told me to tie my 2 main branches upright to train my Queen to grow “up” because I have no straight up branches from the top of my trunk….
Is this correct? I am terrified of him breaking the branches to pull them upright! It’s “trunk” is about 2 feet high and then curves into 2 main weeping branches.
He said it will only grow out (wide) and not up (taller) is this true? I have a huge Autumn Sunset maple in my front yard but I’ve never had a small weeping maple before. Are you supposed to “train” them? Thank you in advance!

Staking up a central leader can create a higher place to weep from. We may do a video soon on staking them
