I know of a trick with a similar method to the first trick. You tell the spectators that your friend can guess the suit of each card you take from the pack. The way you secretly let the accomplice know is by holding the card with one, two, three or for fingers, which indicates which suit. I was trying to think of a way of trying to indicate the numbers with my other hand or by scratching my arm a number of times. Anyway, magic is a wonderful thing and everyone should have at least one trick, even if it is just taking your thumb off and putting it back.
the nine item trick also makes an excellent card trick. deal out 9 cards in the pattern you showed. then send your mentalist partner out of the room, while the spectators choose a card. then put your left thumb on the cards in your left hand to indicate exactly in the same way as you used the coaster. this trick is great fun to repeat again and again. you can cough, sniff your nose, scratch your head, blink your eyes, and do all kinds of other stuff to mislead the audience as to how you are communicating the card. for the grand finale, sit perfectly still and close your eyes. when your partner finds the card. i guarantee all will be blown away.
