For some reason out of the heavy weight serial killers, Kemper I find the most interesting.

Something left out was the fact that kemper begged and the hospital heavily advised to not send him back to his mother but the state disregarded those heavy advocations by the hospital and requests by kemper and sent him back to his mother and he got worse and worse while with his mother.
Of all the serial killers Ed Kemper is the one I truly have sympathy for. He was abused and abandoned by not only his parents but the state as well. He is the poster child for nurture over nature debate. I'm not excusing his actions just my understanding of how he became the monster. Also worth noting was that nothing was mentioned of the girlfriend Kemper had after his first release, how he begged not to go back to his mother, how the state ignored him & the doctors by placing him with her, how his father took 13 yr old Ed to his grandparents for "Christmas" and abandoned him there and probably more I'm not recalling right now.

Not an excuse, but just goes to show how as a parent you can really mess up a kid.
Something was wrong with him mentally, as well! There is NO WAY his mother did that!
You can't even say that. There are people who had normal upbringings who turn out to be monsters. His parents may have been garbage but he still made a choice. His choices are why he's where he's at today.

@@nicolemclement3045 I think y'all missed my point. My blame was not solely on the mother. You are right that plenty of people who had loving parents turn out bad. My point was that as a parent, you have a much bigger influence on your children than we sometimes realize.

My wife was a young co-ed at UCSC at the time and worked with Kemper's mother. She describes her as a strange and unpleasant woman. Someone who, when you arrived at work and saw you'd be working the same shift as her, you'd quietly groan to yourself. No fun to be around. She met Ed a few times and describes him as an odd, awkward, stand-offish, young man.
Hitchhiking, at that time, was an incredibly common and popular way to get around. Kemper would have had dozens of potential victims to choose from, every day.
Very interesting and your wife is incredibly lucky. I've always found it really weird that Kemper's mother worked there and wondered how she fit in at UCSC, so thank you for your story.
It is sad to think that if his mother never worked at UCSC, then those girls would still be alive 😞
It seems that with all the research we have by now, someone could release a book called "How to turn your child into a serial killer", but that would only result in parents using it as a manual to become famous.
Better yet, How not to turn your child into a serial killer! That's what is truly needed!

Your coverage is respectful and informative in a timely manner as you handle these sensitive cases. You allow those murdered to be seen and remembered as people with emotions, goals, and families, not merely a number, thank you for that.

Wow. While nobody can justify such cruel act, o understand what it is like to live in an abusive household. My mom hit me even as an adult. I get it, really.

I grew up in and still live in this area. My cousin and his family live right across the street from Ed Kemper's mother's house, where he killed her and her friend and buried heads in the side yard. I still get the creeps every time I go over there.
i moved to capitola, california (suburb of santa cruz) january 1973....this was going on and mullin was going on....lot of tension in the air ...... lot of people thought it was all crazy hippies...i remember seeing several signs....hippies keep out.

It should be known Ed’s last victims was his mother & her friend. Once she was dead he was done.
Edward Kemper’s mother was awful, such a very bad and horrible woman and mother. She should not have been a mother at all, ever. And Edward’s father was disgusted as well abandoning his child. The way the mother and father treated their only son was horrible. And I am not condoning Edward’s behavior and all for the people he murdered, not at all…..but had this man have a normal and loving relationship with his mother and father maybe he had not resorted to murder innocent people. Mr. Kemper is a very eloquent man, the way he speaks is incredibly well. I saw the documentary “Kemper on Kemper” and he expressed himself so very well. It is ashamed what his parents, especially his mother did to this man, he could have been a great speaker in whatever career he might had chosen to pursue in life having an IQ of 145. He was retested and his IQ was indeed at 145. So ashamed how a life was wasted just by having horrible and dysfunctional parents and upbringing. Very ashamed.
It is so shameful what his mother did, which brings me to this point: not everyone is fit to be a parent; and every child deserves to have great parents with great upbringing. After all, children don’t ask to be born. Edward Kemper is going to be 75 years old in December of this year, 2023. A horrible case of murder and tragedy, with disgraceful, sick parents and a horrible bad parenting……so very sad.

It's so damn sad and pointless. None of those people would have had to die if society hadn't failed Edmund Kemper again and again. Had society functioned we could have had an Edmund Kemper, MD now, or a civil engineer, or anything. Instead we have a bunch of people dead and one wasted life. Such a waste. But at least people are making a lot of money off of it and I guess that's all that really counts...

Just goes to show you how much influence your parents have when your growing up, sad times that he did what he did all because of the relationship he had with his mother, at least he did the right thing and refused parole numerous times and teaches now in prison

It just sounds like an excuse. The fact is, killing wasn’t an issue for him and he probably liked it. His perception is such that even a little reprimand for a wrong action is taken as people being against him and possibly out to get him. He hated his mother because she didn’t believe his bull 💩.
His sister's confirmed their mother abused them all (the oldest sister was kept locked in the cellar to keep her away from boys) but Ed got the worst of it. Is it any wonder that the little boy you called evil and sick starts to believe it?

I feel if he didnt have his mother doing what she did and theybhelped him assimilated back into the world he was with older and elder men when locked up. He didnt know how to act his age. I think if he was out of his mother graps and had some time to rejoin his peers he would may not of killed .
