  • A musical legend, and deservedly so, Decca's 17-CD Clara Haskil Edition combines all of her Universal recordings in one handy set, including her Westminster productions, for the first time. Her genius as a Mozart interpreter is well known, but she was just as persuasive in Schubert, Schumann, Scarlatti, Beethoven--even Falla. Still available at a very good price, this set is essential for anyone who cares about great piano playing.

In fact she was such a fine violinist, and Arthur Grumiaux was such a fine pianist, that they used to perform encores with Grumiaux at the piano and Haskil at the violin!

Don't you have the instruments/players around the wrong way? Reminds me of the yarn about the guy who boasted of buying a Stradivarius and a Picasso. The trouble was that Stravidarius was a lousy painter and Picasso built terrible violins.

@@samlaser1975 Yes, but in this case they were so proficient at each others instrument they swapped them for the encore...

This is why Classics Today is such a great forum. One learns something every day-not only from the great DH- condolences on Pipo, by the way- I only now learnt about your loss- but from subscribers.
Thanks Paul for putting me to right. I still think my anecdote a good one but not apt in your case.

Thanks so much, David. I'm always delighted when you shed some light on the wonderful artists of the past, so many of whom are virtually unknown to modern listeners.

So glad you finally did a review of one of my all time favourite oianists and box set. Haskil was a super talent just like her fellow countryman Dinu Lipatti

Also have the live Koln recording of the last Mozart Piano Concerto with Klemperer. Also amazing!

@@georgejohnson1498 For those looking, the two Mozart concertos with Schuricht and the SWR Orchestra are also there to be discovered (Nos. 9 and 19) - the latter one, if I remember correctly, recorded Live in the historic theatre of Schloss Ludwigsburg. Anyway, the soundis not too shabby, and the performances are what you would expect. :)

I first heard of Clara Haskil when Charlie Chaplin mentioned her in his autobiography. He said he had played her recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 (the Markevich version) for inspiration when he was writing it.

Somewhat surprisingly, Karajan loved her, and treated her with utmost respect, and was rather self-effacing in her presence. They performed together often in his pre-Berlin years, but with only 1 live Salzburg concert from 1956 still extant. Karajan, his wife, and Haskil socialized with their mutual friend, Charlie Chaplin… what a party that would have been.

A very helpful review. You are right; everyone who loves grreat music, and great piano playing, should have this set. Her Mozart Concertos have rarely if ever been surpassed, and ditto her collaboration with Grumiaux. And the tragic circumstances of her life throw that artistry into higher relief. Happy that this set is still available.

Haskil's Mozart C minor is mighty fine.

I have been listening to some of her Scarlatti recordings lately. They are distinctly different from those of other performers. With her the music flows like a stream as if it was effortless and easy for her, which it probably was. Other performers of Scarlatti, even really good ones, sometimes sound like they are playing on the forward edge of their technical skill.

I adore her stylish performance of Mozart Sonata K330 in C major although I have to say, Horowitz (in Moscow) makes this piece so much more sensual and dramatic, IMO without going over the top. To listen to both is a study in contrasts!

I wonder whether she suffered from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder with unusually loose joints and other issues.
She was truly great. Thanks for this review.

Conductors, violinists ,Enescu ,Lipatti they all adored her. Little Jewish women pianists fill all the books and every pianophiles memory Annie Fischer,.Novaes and Bachauer weren't Jewish and played men;s repertoire. I'm astounded by the repertoire this woman played in a day when aot of stuff wasn't played. We have her on record playing the cleanest most buoyant, musical Scarlatti as well as her in Hindemith. Radio live performances are always interesting with her ! Ingrid Habler and her are the finest Mozarteans .

Universal acquired Westminster, aha! Have a 3 LP album of the Bach Trio Sonatas played by Carl Weinrich on a Swedish organ. I think it's marvelous: clean, silvery sound, right tempos. Has it been digitized?
