    Thanks for doing the autopsy on this water pump. I just removed the pump from my 95 chevy g20 van which failed after 181K miles. The seals couldn't handle the heat and pressure of the coolant once the new thermostat replaced the faulty stuck open part. Interesting chunk of metal that did a great job for many years. Thanks again for opening the back door on this part so I could see its workings.

      Greetings...Loretta Caputo...........You're welcome, and, thanks for watching...........Yes, indeed, it be, an..."Auto-topsy"...alright...lol..........The water-pump, that you saw in this UA-cam video of mine, sure is (or was...lol), very strong, and has been known to last, many, many miles (or kilometers), as compared to, the automotive water pump, that I saw, just a few days ago (in a video, that is), and here's, the scoop on that..........The vehicle wouldn't get very far, before, the engine would start to "over-heat", and the "culprit", turned out to be, now get this, a..."Plastic impeller" (that be, the water-wheel part, that's inside the water-pump), and, it started to "slip", on the metal shaft, that was supposed to make the damn thing "spin", in order to pump, the much needed Water (actually, it's coolant, which is a mixture, of anti-freeze & water), through the engine, to keep it at operating temperature, well, once it warmed up, that is...(give me a "metal" impeller, any day, over, a plastic one, that might cause, all of the fuss, trouble, and expense, that, that poor vehicle owner experienced)...........If Ya want to make an automotive water-pump, last longer, make sure to use, at least, a 50-50 mix, of anti-freeze and distilled water, in the cooling system, along with, changing it with fresh stuff, at the proper intervals, because, from what I recall, is that, the coolant acts, kinda-like, a lubricant somewhat, oh, and also, by changing the coolant often enough (well, if it's not already too late, that is), then, both the radiator, and the heater core (that's, usually hiding inside the dashboard), that heats, the occupants of the vehicle, won't start to plug-up, and, possibly corrode "internally", oh, and, in a worst case scenario, the radiator, and/or, the heater core, might..."spring-ah-leak"...!!!...(hopefully not)............Most of the automotive water-pumps, that I've been around, usually had, in the main casting/body, what is called, a..."weep hole"...which, was, just a small hole, that would "weep" (cry...lol), and leak coolant through it, if the (internal) "seal"....failed..............Is your Fan belt/serpentine belt, in good condition...???...and.......till next time.......Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      Greetings...Kevin CROWLEY..........Thanks for the nice comment, and, thanks for watching too.........If you want your water pump to last longer (theoretically, that is), then, make sure, to change your "coolant" (that be, an anti-freeze and distilled water mixture), at the recommended intervals, because, I've heard in the past, that, good anti-freeze, will probably, help to lubricate the water pump...well, to me, probably meaning, that (ceramic...???) cartridge seal, so that, it can hold the cooling system's pressure (ball-park...15 PSI/Pounds per Square inch), and, all of that coolant's heat as well.........There is usually, a "weep" hole, in the water pump's body (casting), that will start to "weep" (cry...lol), when the water pump's internal (cartridge seal) "fails", and then, coolant, will then be seen, dribbling, out of that weep hole, that I just mentioned, and.......till next time.......Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      Greetings...Andrew Hudson...........You're welcome, and, thanks for the nice comment..........Most of the water pumps, that were on any of the engines that I've ever had, would have usually had (on them), what is referred to, as a "weep" hole, and, if the water pump's internal "seal" failed, even just slightly, then, the hot pressurized coolant (15 PSI/Pounds per Square Inch pressure, give or take a bit), that's in the engine's cooling system, would get past the water pump's internal "seal" (sometimes, might be called a cartridge type of seal possibly), and, the coolant (anti-freeze and water mixture), would then, start to "leak", right through that "weep" hole, in the water pump's body/main casting, well, if you can see where that "weep" hole is located, that is (some of those "weep" holes, can be in locations, that aren't so easy to see).........The bearing, that's inside the water pump, has to be in good shape as well, and if not, then, sometimes, some quite strange noises might be heard, possibly...........Also, don't let the "anti-freeze" get too old, because, once the so called, "corrosion protection" gets used up/disappears, then, it's usually, just a matter of time, where-by, that nasty corrosion, starts "eating-away", at the insides, of, both the radiator & the heater core too, which can sometimes, end up, "springing a leak" (radiator coolant leak, usually ends up, on the ground, and, a heater core's coolant leak, usually ends up, soaking the carpet in that location, oh, and, sometimes, when a heater core "springs a small leak", then sometimes, a "sweet smelling Fog", can be seen & smelled, when it's coming out of the defrost vents, that are usually on the top of the vehicle's dashboard, and, "Don't Breathe this Fog", cuz, it's probably not good for Humans, at all, and........till next time.......Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      @RockysRoadshow  5 років тому

      Greetings...Great Music Good feel..........Thanks for the nice comment, and for, watching too........There are basically 2 things, that usually go wrong, with this type of automotive water pump.........One of them, is that, the, "seal" (sometimes referred to, as being a cartridge type of seal), and, when it starts to fail, then, sometimes, a person might see some coolant, dripping from a small "weep" hole (kinda like crying...lol), that's in the water pump's body/casting, when the engine is at operating temperature (that weep hole, is there, to let you know, that, the seal inside, is failing)...........The other failure, is usually when, the (ball) bearings, that are inside of, a special, quite long bearing, that lets the water pump's shaft spin freely...........Sometimes, Ya might hear a rattling type of sound, when this type of ball bearing, gets worn too much, and........till next time........Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      nothadnotbad Greetings nothadnotbad....You're welcome, and, thanks kindly, my Friend, for Your much appreciated comment, and what You had to say about my UA-cam videos.......................................................I'm not all that sure, that my videos, are all that professional at all, as, they are, shall we say..."Low Budget"...lol......................................................."3 Light Bulbs" (to "Light" the makeshift Studio...lol), a piece of Laminate (aka, counter top hard surface stuff), taped to a piece of plywood, on the Work-Bench, and the Video Camera, that's being held stationary, overhead, most times, with a Wooden 2 by 2, and a 1/4 inch Bolt...!!!...lol.................................................I guess, "What" an older Friend of mine, was sayin', quite a few times, many years ago, kinda got stuck in my head...................................................He would say, from time to time, about the Materials and Methods, that He would Use, in order to, maintain, or upgrade His House, and, what He would at times, be saying is..."Cheap as Possible"...(kinda like me, at times!...lol).................................................My so called...Automotive "Movie Props", for the most part, just happen to be, a bunch of unused, left over, parts and pieces, that were probably replaced with, new, or rebuilt/re-manufactured, Replacement Parts, and were "Re & Re'd" (Removed and Replaced), when "They" needed to be!.................................................As I see it, by keeping things, reasonably Simple, and using somewhat, easy to understand Language, I'm thinking (and hoping as well), that, whatever it is, that I'm trying to explain to People (world-wide), in any of my UA-cam videos, at any given time, would be that, of, having Them (the People viewing and listening to), my UA-cam videos, perhaps, having, an enjoyable learning experience, and hopefully, would also, have a reasonable understanding, about, how things work, and, how to adjust or repair, the part/mechanism, that, just might be involved, at that time..................................................I'm just, One of those, meat and potato, blue jean wear-in' Guys, kinda like a..."Jay Leno"...wanna-be, but, I will never have all of the money, that he has, as well as, His..."King Sized Garage, with "ALL" of those Awesome Cars, parked under it's Roof"...that He has accumulated, up to this point in time...!!!...lol.................................................Thanks again, for Your Great comment, my Friend...........................................Till next time...Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      Satan Allah Greetings Satan Allah....Thanks for watching, and for Your Great comment as well.This particular UA-cam video of mine, was done in "One Take" (aka, I pressed the "Record" Button, on the Video Camera, and..."Just Went For It"...!!!...lol).Come to think of it...just about..."All"...of my UA-cam videos are..."Done In One Take"...and..."Un-Edited"...as well...!!!There were a few times, when I Pressed the "Record" Button, on the Video Camera, where I kinda "Messed-up the Intro" (aka, Introduction, as in, the very Start of the Video itself), and, there were a few times, that I, shall we say, got "Tongue-Tied" (as in, somehow, my Vocal Cords, may have Miss-Interpreted the Signal, that My Brain was sending-out, and the words that I was tryin' to speak, got all messed-up/jumbled...!!!...lol).Also...for the most part, My Videos are "Uploaded" to UA-cam, in their "Raw" Form (aka, not having any Editing, to speak of), and, also...Without a "Script" as well, with the exception, that I had a Few "Specifications", jotted down on a piece of paper, and off to the side, in order to help me, "Not Mess-up" (aka, make a Mistake), with some Specification "Numbers", for some Ignition Coil videos, that I've done in the past.Thanks again, for Your Great comment.Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      Greetings...Just Plain Common Sense...........Thanks for the nice comment, and thanks, for watching too..........I can't recall, if I mentioned the water pump's "weep" hole or not, but, there's usually a small hole, that's in the main body, of the cast iron type, of, automotive water pump, which will usually "weep" (kinda like, cry/tears...lol) coolant (that be a mixture of anti-freeze and water), through that (weep) hole, when the water pump's "internal seal", starts to fail............So, if Ya see any coolant, leaking/dribbling, from the lower part of the water pump, when the engine is up to operating temperature, and, while it's just idling, then, it might just be Ur water pump..."crying"...ooops, I meant to say..."weeping"...lol...oh, and, be very careful, around any moving or hot engine parts & pieces, so Ya don't get hurt...!!!...and...till next time........Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

    You made a great video. I like it. I have a 94 C1500 4.3L. It was leaking yesterday so I pulled it off. I actually appeared to be leaking for the gasket holding the cover on the back of it. Weird, I know. never heard of that. But I rtv'd it back together and am going to throw it back on today. But if I continue to have problems, can you tell me where to get the bearings and seals for this pump? Thank you

    • @RockysRoadshow
      @RockysRoadshow  4 роки тому

      Greetings...Shaun Deibert………..Thanks for the nice comment, and thanks, for watching too...……Yes-Sir-ee-Bob...the older cast iron water pumps, for a Chevy V-8 engine, were about the only ones, that had that stamped sheet metal cover on the back of it, as far as I recall, that is...…….I never had one "leak" coolant, at that sheet metal cover's gasket/joint...……..I kinda doubt, that you'll be able to get any "rebuild" parts, for this type of water pump...…….Ya might get lucky, and be able to get the cartridge seal, that seals in the pressurized coolant maybe...???...…….As for the "bearing", well, it's probably not gonna be, your typical, ball or roller bearing, that you're probably used to seeing, because, the water pump's..."bearing and shaft"...are one complete "unit" (very specialized, to say the least)………..I usually, just buy a "Re-man" (as in, Re-manufactured), water pump, which, will probably, have been, disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and then, re-assembled, with, a new bearing/shaft unit, a new cartridge seal, and, if need be, a (different) serviceable, or perhaps, new impellor (aka, water pump "wheel", so to speak), in case of, too much pitting/cavitation, which also applies to, the inside of the water pump's, cast iron housing/body, as well...…….Also, the round flange, that the fan, or, the fan's clutch, bolts onto, is probably, pressed onto the water pump's shaft, with a hydraulic press...……..Never pound on that round flange with a hammer or what-ever, or, the shaft/bearing unit, will probably get damaged, as a result...!!!...lol...…….Maybe, a brand new water pump, is available perhaps...???...……..So then, contact your nearest, or favorite, parts store, and, see what they have in stock, or, if not, then, see if they can order one in for you, for your exact, water pump needs...…….Good luck, and......till next time...…Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

      Greetings...rafael shalelashvili...........Thanks for watching..........I didn't have the other style of water pump, so, I can't tell you about, comparing the shaft or measurements (the long version, will probably have a longer shaft...???).........The "impeller" (looks kinda like a water-wheel), that actually pumps the water, probably won't work properly, when reversing the water (coolant) flow, as, the impeller is probably designed to work properly, in the rotating direction, that it was intended for.........Probably be best, if Ya got a new or rebuilt water pump, for your application, because, the new or rebuilt water pump, will have a new bearing, and a new cartridge seal in it already..........Also, in some cases, in the old one, there might be cavitation/pitting damage as well, possibly..........Keep fresh coolant in the cooling system at all times, to prevent corrosion, especially in the radiator or heater core, and.......till next time.......Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

    So if everything is pressed fit how did you get it apart?

    • @RockysRoadshow
      @RockysRoadshow  4 роки тому

      Greetings...Dani over...……..Thanks for watching...…….I got it apart, by hammering on the end of, a piece of round steel bar, that I used as a punch (oh, and, the heavier the hammer is, the more force/impact Ya can get, with a single swing)………...The factories, that make this type of water pump, will probably be pressing the water pump's component parts together, by using a hydraulic press, with some of the larger ones, being able to exert many tons of pressure...……..Then, there is also, what is known, as an "Arbor Press", that works kinda like, a rack and pinion setup, where-by, the (round) pinion gear is rotated (by you), by pulling (usually downwards), on a fairly long lever/bar, and, as the pinion gear rotates, then, the rack (think in terms of, a square metal bar, that has gear teeth cut, on one face of, the square bar)………..So then, the pinion gear's, teeth, "mesh" (aka, engage with), the gear teeth, that are on the "rack", and what is occurring here, is that, you are turning a rotary force (with the lever/bar, by hand), into a "linear" (straight line) force...and...…..till next time......Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.

    what Is the top hole for on the pump

    • @RockysRoadshow
      @RockysRoadshow  4 роки тому

      Greetings...Phillip Smith...…..Thanks for watching...…...Well, if the hole in this water pump, that you're referring to, happens to be, the one, that appears to be, drilled into the water pump's, cast iron main body, at almost 90 degrees to the pump's shaft, then, that particular hole, is usually called, the "weep" hole (as in crying...lol)...……There is probably, a ceramic seal (sometimes called, a cartridge seal), inside of the water pump, that keeps the pressure, of the hot coolant (antifreeze and water mixture), within, the entire cooling system...…...So then, when that (internal) cartridge seal, shall we say..."springs-a-leak"...then, the pressurized coolant, will usually, leak past the faulty seal, and then, it will..."weep"...out of that weep hole, which is usually, a pretty darn good indicator, that, a new water pump, will need to be installed, in the very near future, and...….till next time...….Be Safe, take care, and have a good one.
