I've only played a few times but I actually had a very different impression then Tom on this one. While there is plenty of luck due to cards/dice, a big part of the game (at least the way I and my wife were playing it) was sculpting your hand to pull off those devastating combos or power plays and it doesn't sound like he was doing that. In fact I'd say the way it sounds like Tom was playing is a way to see the advantage skill has on the game, as some one who just plays whatever card is in range each turn will nick me up a bit here and there, but ultimately get consistently crushed by my superior hand management probably 9 times out of 10. I also found the terrain much more interesting then I expected it would be. Because so many of the cards force you or your opponent to move around the board in specific ways, and because of the consistent damage knocking opponents into terrain causes, I found it quite fun and powerful to observe the positioning's on the board each turn, and to try to predict which cards to save in my hand based on where I thought my opponent's card would move us during their turn so that I could get optimal collision damage on my turn. A sort of chess like trying to play 1-2 turns ahead. Also, once you delve in a little more you see that characters aren't just their move and life, zangief is considered by many I've talked to the best character in the game despite that 2 movement, because his deck if full of cards that auto-position him directly next to his opponent, effectively negating his 2 movement weakness while still giving him that extra health advantage (among other reasons), which is part of the beauty of the game, that while many characters have clear weakenesses, they always seem to have some aspect of their game that allows you to creatively work around it. Another thing I've noticed from the handful of games I've played is that the variety of characters allows different players to enjoy different characters. Cammy, for instance, most of the cards in her deck combos into each other for people like Tom who love big combos. For people who just like that one really gigantic turn, Juri's ultra, instead of being an attack, makes every card in her deck combo into every other card in her deck so literally all you need is a big hand of your best stuff, land the first one, and now its time to drop that entire hand down. And on and on. So yes, Zangief isn't the most combo heavy character, but if you want combos, there are characters who give you that. I don't think the game is perfect, and I don't mean to disqualify Tom's experience, he's sharing his experience, just wanted to put it out there that my own experience so far has been vastly different, and I'm mostly just playing with my wife for whom I think it would have been fine if this game was the random light game Tom experienced it as but also experience it as a much deeper and strategic game then either of us expected.
I've got to say this comment is exactly how I feel about the game as well. I just played about 12 games per weekend for 2 weeks in a row and I've tried almost every character and I would say the game plays very well and has a lot of variety (assuming you payed $$$ for more characters)
Totally agree. I found it odd that Tom mentions that there aren't many combo cards in the deck as a negative... but then immediately says combos are devastating. Isn't that the point of them being limited? So you can hold back the cards that can link for a huge play... and conversely if you counter that first card that was set up for a huge combo play, it is devastating for your opponent too.
I'm not excusing anything here, but I remember loosely watching Joe's stream when he was unboxing this. The dude was about to cry when he saw the error with that spinning-counter-thingy. I don't own the game, and not interested in this genre at all... But I can respect a passion project, and an error or two from a first timer.
I also backed him for the passion I saw in his project.. . Too bad, 3 years later, the one who cried were the people screwed by the combined mistakes of him and Jasco. Some people had to pay an additional 30% more of what they spent (or they had to give up to everything, without a full refund), some other people paid full price and today still didn't receive the game, a refund, or any kind of response from both Joe and Jasco. I swear I will never support again a Joe's project or a game with the Jasco's logo. Oh, but the game is actually fine (beside the many quality flaws).
You are correct. Street Masters, Exceed, and Dice Throne would push this game off of most shelves. The elements mashed together here just don’t feel like Street Fighter. But the minis are stunning for pre-painted products.
Love This game. Easy to learn and teach and every game I'm learning new ways to combo or set up attacks, the bluffing mechanic and counter attack is so much fun. Quick turn over in games. Easy set up and pack down.
This game is fantastic. I hope people don't get too carried away by his less than enthused impressions and over this game. I value Tom's opinion just as much as anyone else, but I feel he missed the mark on this one.
@@theodorebaggins1050 agreed. I.have been loving its easy to learn, and interesting and varied combat. Every game is different. More skill than luck i think. I have been making lots of gameplay videos
@@marfin4325 the dice are favoured for attack. And the cards are in your control as you can control the draw. I have played over 60 or so games. The skilled player always wins. But the small bit if luck can give a casual player the boost they need.
@@mikeglasswell-gameplay meh, this game isn’t for anybody, love fighting video games. I played SF competitively for years, now I just play fighting board games. The gameplay for this one didn’t interest me due to the dice. Also some of the movement mechanics seems awkward, in my opinion. Those minis are gorgeous though.
This was a fair review. I enjoy the game quite a bit for what it is. It's a lite beer & pretzels game with incredibly high production minis. I don't mind the randomness because it was intentional. IIRC they said they went for about a 60/40 skill to luck ratio, but I can see how some people wouldn't like that much random luck in the game. But I got what I wanted out of it. Fantastic minis and a game that's easy to teach/play and that's surprisingly quick to set up for how much their is.
I have the game and really enjoy it. It’s not the most complex/strategic game for sure but sculpting your hand to play combos while trying to position your self to maximize your attacks and out think you’re opponent is a lot of fun. I have to disagree that the game doesn’t feel like street fighter. Imo that’s it’s biggest strong suit is that the characters have moves and combos that reflect the video game. It’s def not a cheap game but I’d challenge anyone who likes street fighter to play it and not have a good time. Bottom line It’s a fun game with good choices that feels like you are playing with street fighter characters.
@@marks6928 Yeah if you got the base game, Boss expansion, and the exclusive base characters it was $140.. and they charged 40 dollars for shipping. And on top of that, it took about 4 years.
This game is unmatched in terribleness for storage solutions. I know Angry Joe expected people would display the minis, but like man, at least include some tuck boxes... Come on... I backed the game on KS, and a huge amount of the delays were having to fight with Capcom America -> Capcom Japan and back and forth with approval for colors and models..
It's absolutely absurd. Over two months late with no actual explanation, just ridiculous excuses like "you sent the fulfilment center too many emails." Jasco are a bunch of hack frauds.
Breaking EU/UK law by not refunding within 14days, lying, misleading, hiding costs, and WAY over cost shipping. Seen some with £200+ in shipping fees/VAT and it is all from Jascos mistakes. They then blame EU backers for the issues, and deny all responsibility, just a sham company.
I belive the audience for this game wasn't board game players, but instead Street Fighter fans that might want a casual, luck based light game, specially for multi player. I imagine most people buying it for the miniatures, and getting a board game to play with then as a bonus hehe
about right. I prefer light games thst kinda feel like I'm still doing something instead of always strategizing. I would much rather play the video game but this seems interesting just to do every ao often.
I think the simplistic nature of this game is one of its selling points, The game is so easy to teach, fast t oplay, and exciting that you can get nearly anyone to the table. My favorite game is Ti4 and I didn't care for the street fighter IP but damn is this just a great game. I do hate the terrain pieces so that I agree on but other than that I think this game is worthy of more praise.

@@simonadams I quite enjoyed sitting and gluing all the terrain together; however, storing it all afterwards is a nightmare. Yes, elephants, I'm especially looking at you!
they should have called up restoration and done a collaboration. we bring the IP, the miniatures, and a sack of money, you bring the unmatched system, artists, game developers, playtesters, and proven track record,
While I agree that there is maybe too much randomness with the combo of dice and cards you can say the same thing about dice throne. For me this feels like street fighter. Each character I’ve played as or against feels like their digital counter part. The dice I feel are to simulate “Dropping a combo” like you would in the game where by you miss the timing or miss your crossup. There’s also the hand management to it that keeps the tension high.
Dice throne is cheaper, portable, characters can be bought separately, and doesn't cost a hundred dollars to ship to your home. I'd say Dice throne has nothing to be jealous about street fighter.
@@vonwoolf9963 wut? Who said it had anything to be jealous of? The point is they both have that element. And if you haven’t played it then you have very little to base it on besides Toms review. Fair review, but I'd say it was fairly clear during the Kickstarter that this was going to be a light beer & pretzels sort of game with overproduced miniatures and lots of random luck. It's for collector fans of the genre/IP who spend money on such things. I feel fine with purchasing it, even as a casual fan of the IP. Though I plan on keeping it, the resell value will be good even just for the miniatures. Think about it: $280 was the all-in pledge which includes 37 of those lovely huge pre-painted miniatures. I would wager a backer could sell just the miniatures and make their money back, even years after the fact.
"beer & pretzel" reason just sounds like an excuse for poor design choices. If they wanted to just sell mini for collectors and fans, then why design a game around it?
@@marfin4325 the game design is fine, it's a light card play skirmish game, I am failing to see your point.whats wrong with a light game with amazing miniatures?
@@thereal4579 I haven't played it, but it sounds like it was too random. This can be fine in some party games, but this game is very expensive and doesn't allow player driven interaction.
Looks to me like a $20 card game with $60 miniatures. Honestly, that's still better than i was expecting. Maybe ill try it at a convention a few years down the line.
I have this game and it is a lot better than he made it to be. it is 60% luck and the packaging is the worst I've ever seen. I had to create my own tuck boxes and a way to store the minatures. other than that you will be surprised by the game play and the dynamic of it. @@Atariese yeah i can vouch for everything in that message. The storage is ridiculous horrendous. Like you can't believe someone actually had to approve all of that garbage. But the game is amazing.
I appreciate your complete honesty in your review. I feel that the game caters more toward a casual fan base rather than strict strategy and competitiveness.
As someone who has played this game a dozen times already since getting it a week ago here are my thoughts. I really really enjoy this game and I would 100% disagree with Tom on the amount of randomness and it affecting the gameplay. To me it doesn't, they state in the rulebook they were going for a 60/40 ratio. Most of the time the winner was the person who was able to out wit the other player with bait cards and counterattacks. Typically the person who got a big combo wasn't the person who won. Also if you want more combos play a combo character Zangief was never a combo guy. As for the price point, yeah it's pretty high but it really depends on how much you play a game to say if the game is worth that amount of money. I will get my money's worth for sure as I haven't even played all the characters yet.
Put a fair amount of money into this, and I'm honestly not unhappy. I see this as a Sunday tournament event game for the lads. A FIFA replacement. The definition of a beer and pretzel game that can get my average friends into bgs.
@@simonadams Sure, make a lot of money back but never get your excitement and expectations met. Money can buy a lot but it can’t get you those back. Glad you like it, for me though, I need to more that just “like” something to spend this amount of money on it.
@@Sam-vk8xd So you don't have the game? And here you are sneering at someone because they're not head over heels in love with the game? Mate. Life is short.
This is why YOU PLAYTEST WITH OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. The design mistakes tom is talking about are proof that this was playtested with only people who had good opinions about it (friends or fans from angry joe).
I've been using the mini's for Exceed btw and it's awesome! I actually think I prefer playing Exceed with the miniatures more than the Street Fighter game itself, LOL. Exceed just seems like the perfect game for high quality miniatures to give you that visual representation of the fighters dueling. I hope future iterations of Jasco's UTS games and L99's Exceed will crossover with the same theme so we can get more miniatures for it.
I know this isn't much of a defense for all the components not fitting in the box, but I imagine they expect you to want to display the figures somewhere. That's what I do at least so that people can have a look and the nice models aren't getting hidden away.
@@BreezingThrou I just slide them apart :x and slide them back together when I use them. It's only two pieces, and I think the trees look great. I'd rather get awesome stuff that doesn't fit as easily back in the box then not get awesome stuff? I can understand it might annoy some people though.
Nah, they just don’t plan for everything to fit. It’s only planned to pack everything from factory to individual. After that, it’s your problem if it fits.
It honestly felt like the review was trying to find problems with the game from the start. Once he mentioned the components not fitting in the box properly after opening, I was done. A lot of board games have that issue.
So, as a person who played Street Fighter growing up and even played a bit of local competitive play.........there's a reason why certain characters don't have that many combos, or if they do they are very short. That's how they play in the game. Each character (that I've played) has felt like they do in the game. Are you fighting against Zangief? Then you better start wanting to combo, because you can't use defense dice against most of this attacks. Why? He's a command grab character.....you can't block those. Ken, I did a 5 hit combo on my opponent and moved him across the board and into terrain.......but I had to stop myself because I could have ran out of cards for my defense.....which is how Ken plays. Ibuki, a ninja, as a lot of unique counter cards that just get her out of attacks....because that's how she plays. There's a wind guy who can leap off the edge of the board and away from attacks.....again....it's what he does in the fighting game. I have played other games that tried to mimic the fighting game.......and none of the characters felt like the characters themselves. This is the first time I can say I actually felt like I'm playing the game.
I disagree. I’ve played fighting games competitively for years (especially SF, my first love) and I did not feel this game caught the feel of a true fighting video game. Of course we can disagree but having dice in a game where the skill is in the Yomi (mind game) within the neutral and instead of getting the payout for the correct read (by damaging the opponent) you have to roll to check for results? No, I’m sorry RNG like this kills the feel. Now, if I don’t look at it as a board game representation of SF and just a fun game with some elements from SF and the theme. The yeah, looks really fun. But not worth the price tag.
@@Sam-vk8xd I didn't meant to imply that it is a true representation of the competitive side of Street Fighter, but rather the characters themselves feel like the characters. When I played as Bison, I felt like I was playing Bison. The "competitive" side of it comes in the guessing game of Strikes, Projectiles, and Specials. Certain characters are given "Projectiles" (for example Zangeif and Cammy) to help balance things out, but if you know what a character can do you can probably guess what they're going to do. For example, I wouldn't expect Guile to combo as much as Ken. So, if you can correctly guess your opponents move then you can punish your opponent and throw their game off. What Tom didn't go over, from what I remember, is the different mechanics of Mix-Ups, Throws, Charges, Dashes, Pokes, etc. that cards have. But, I'll agree....if you don't like dice games or any game with a random element then this isn't for you.
Agreed but I think the point of having the 3 franchises (SF, MK, and DBZ) was to make it so you could mix them all together if you wanted. I doubt they will change much. Also, let's hope they don't call it "Mortal Combat".
@@Vigotehbutch Nah, it's Mortal Kombat....and if NRS is anything like Capcom....they're going to have to be very specific on the figures. They had to redo 3 minis because they weren't right shade of color (Ken and Q) or their eyes weren't right (Ibuki).
There is nothing that can be done for the gameplay. All the games will be compatible and therefore will have to follow the same rules. The only possibility I can see is them maybe ham-fisting some new mode in there, but it would probably be unbalanced for the street fighter characters since it wouldn't be designed with their decks in mind.
If you don't see how this is replicating the actual SF game experience, you were not a serious SF player and was probably just smashing button. The whole attack/counter/bait is exactly how the game works.
@@thereal4579 It's pretty good! It's a little similar to this in that each fighter has their own decks of cards and you play them out face down and flip over to see what happens. There's a wider variety of fighters in Battlecon, though, and the game mechanics for the different fighters are also very different from each other. There's also less randomness - you have your cards in your hand and can pick what move you're doing each turn and there are no dice determining the outcomes. Basically if you like this Street Fighter game you'd probably also like BattleCon.
@@Bodyknock Ironically, it’s because I cherish Street Fighter that I’m turned away from this game (too much luck element). I have no problem with dice for most games, but not when you’re trying to emulate a fighter.
@@robertbouley7697 exactly. Imagine really getting into the Yomi (mind game) in this game, you’ve made the right choice reading your opponent’s next move. You played the right card, you roll the dice... and miss. Where’s the payout for the correct read? In a fighting game you are rewarded for this with the damage you inflict, with this game you leave it to luck. Actually this situation I mention is what happened in the demo gameplay during the KS. Alex played the right card against Angry Joe because he read the neutral right, and then he rolls the dice... and gets no hits.
This is more like a video gamer's deluxe item. Something to treat yourself when you are a fan. Where having it at all is one of the main ideas. I know a few people that bought games like this and they have maybe.... two or three big KS board games of this sort and that's that. Gigantic, deluxe, heavy-ameritrash titles with a known license that they enjoy playing and make a special night out of it. I think there's a niche there for stuff like this. I'd rather play Summoner Wars but this is fine too :).
This is great way to explain it. For someone who is more into video games, this will be a good (albeit pricey) transition item to board games or as you said, a collectors piece. Sure, there are some valid criticisms, but they only really apply to more seasoned board gamers. Some people will be satisfied with playing a game with a big honking Ryu and not someone who looks like him. I see a lot of this in the Monster Hunter Kickstarter, where the fans of the video game are excited but those same seasoned gamers jump on weaknesses of the game due to design choices to line it up with the IP. A lot people are comparing it to Primal, but for someone who isnt so into board games, they wont care simply because Primal ISN'T MH.
I got this 100% for the minis as a game i grew up with and how mind blowing the minis are. I feel like the price is pretty justified for that quality of minis. That said, im hoping to play it and have fun with my son but I dont expect it to be mind blowing gameplay.
@@Cergorach Yah exactly. Id be a little sad if it was but I probably would have just chucked the rest of the game and kept the minis lol. I think CMON already copied them and added some transparent plastic to some of their XMEN minis and I predict we will see a lot more of those going forward so you gotta hand it to them for creating something that will "revolutionize" minis going forward.
@@Cergorach Exactly how I feel. There were very very veryyyyyy limited notes on gameplay and balance during the KS. It was all about the minis. I'm happy there is a bit of a game in there.

A choice. Funny that this example concerns Star Wars... known for the dark side and evil empire. * Reference: All the amazing existing creative solutions/hacks fans have come up with for... everything - video games, board games, etc. - That often push a design well beyond it's existing scope and what anyone thought was possible.

I mean at least I have the neat figures but it was frustrating none the less.
@@RobVespa I would be shocked if Angry Joe would do something like this. He's made his UA-cam career out of being pro consumer and it would completely destroy his credibility. After playing through the game several times now, I don't really think the game needs much work in the overall design. There are definitely some tweaks and clarifications that need to happen and they have and official FAQ/Errata which has captured most of it. But I think the game is pretty great as is. It fits nicely along side other fighting board games like Yomi, Exceed and Battlecon.
I think I might know why they called it "the miniatures game." It took a while to ship, it also took some time before that in development, so you have to backdate a few years at this point. Joe comes to the board game hobby more from video games and RPGs (I'm the same so I feel like that's why I got the reference pretty quick). Back especially some years back there was a typical trend of calling an IP (Whatever) the Miniatures Game or the like to distinguish it from something else like a video game or tabletop RPG. Think things like D&D The Miniatures Game. X-Wing the Miniatures Game. Etc. So if I were to bet, that was probably the logic behind naming it like that; to kind of ensure people understood that hey this says Street Fighter on it but it's a board style game.
so for the case with X-Wing, it's a licensing thing. Hasbro has the Star Wars license rights to board games... FFG (now Asmodee) have the rights to make miniatures game. So that's why all of their games (X-wing, Imperial Assault, Rebellion, Outer Rim, Armada and Legion) all have miniatures in them, so they can be classified as miniatures games, even though games like Rebellion and Outer rim could use tokens like any other board game and function perfectly., I suspect it's the same thing here too. Licensing is a mess with these things.
Got this mainly because it will be cross compatable with any other game using the card fighting system. So far Mortal Kombat is coming. The game can only be so in depth if they plan to make compatible games in the future. Games pretty great for what it is just my opinion.
Everything is meant to be compatible, so I highly doubt there will be any updates to this game until if/when they did a whole reboot and it's much too soon for that. I haven't played my copy yet, but I trust Tom when he says there is too much randomness in it. That's unfortunate, but it might a simple game to pull out once a while.
@@paulb2474 I suppose its possible to do some slight tweeks, but I don't think slight tweeks would change anything significantly. To do that, you would have to change the character decks. Having played my first game yesterday, I have to say I mostly disagree with Tom with my general feeling toward the game. He's not wrong about the randomness (it basically caused me to lose my first game) but I don't mind it. So I really don't think it needs to be improved for the most part. The only thing I might change is making combos easier to pull off.
Indeed. Many characters are different based on the style from the games. Have had nothing but fun with this. Also, thanks for dealing with what you did on the kickstarters comment section.
I backed it, got the full pledge, even paid a little extra for spare dice. I never really expected it to be an amazing game, but I do love Street Fighter. I'm glad to have all those minis and also just wanted to support Angry Joe. If they end up doing the Mortal Kombat one in the future, I'll probably back again to grow the collection.
Think it's called "Miniatures Game" to differ it from the video game and in case of possible future other versions (better than just calling it "Street Fighter" to possibly cause confusion). Game is fun, not the best gameplay out there for a board game (at least, to my cup o' tea), but it's fine and I think does a good job replicating the fighting game in a board game setting., it's good times and the miniatures are definitely pretty. ya, the gauge was a mess up of production and Angry Joe was pretty upset with that.
Miniatures Games are a different type of games, also called tabletop games. They don't come with game boards, but you build terrain for them. So the title is as misleading as calling it "Street Fighter: The Card Game". There are sure also plenty of cards in the game, a card game would still be something different. But based on Tom's review, the most fitting title might have as well been: "Street Fighter: The Miniatures"?
So the miniatures only exist to justify the massive price. Looks like with a few tweaks you wouldn't even need a board, this could have been a card game.
You've got it backwards: this is a set of collectible miniatures with a game attached, not a game with some figures attached. They went DEEP on the roster during the kickstarter, including many characters that you just don't see merch of. This game has EASILY the best Dan Hibiki figure I can get my hands on.
@@ccggenius this makes sense, there's a ton of ways they could have brought the costs down, having smaller unpainted miniatures or just selling them as separate upgrade sets. The comparison to amiibo is a good one.
I followed the campaign even before it started, cause I loved Street Fighter from old, but as I got videos on the how to play and stuff my mind was set to a "This is a fighting card game with dice, with nice looking action figures" and the more the campaign went on, the more this was carved into my head, for the price was a big no, the figures are amazing but I tough was not worth the price.

Mythic Battles: Pantheon was reviewed by Sam since that is his kind of game. I assume that Roy would be the one to review it now but I could be wrong. I don’t think that anyone on the Dice Tower reviewed Arena. Now when the dungeon crawl expansions to Arena show up...that might be interesting to see Tom review.
@@ArnieHorta Tom has expressed interest in Mythic Battles: Ragnarok, given the love the fans (like me) show this game. I don’t think of this so much as a fighting game like BattleCon or Yomi. Compared to them the gameplay suffers. This really is more like Star Wars Epic Duels in gameplay with a fighting game skin. Restoration Games did a better job of adapting that game when they made Unmatched, but this game isn’t bad.
I actually liked the gameplay of this better then Yomi, and I do like Yomi quite a bit too, but the fact that every single thing you do in Yomi is a rock paper scissors guessing game is kind of stressful to me, I like that here if I don't want to guess what they have I can just block, or I can do other things like move around and draw extra cards to give me breathers between the rock paper scissors guessing. What Yomi has over it is much easier set up and clean up, this is definitely a game I think I'd play a lot more if we didn't have to set up a board an terrain in addition to shuffling decks every single time we play. I don't agree with most of Tom's comments but one I do agree with is that the whole thing feels a little needlessly complicated, like it really could have benefited from another pass trying to simplify things a bit more. Why do I have to care if a piece of terrain is classified as "large" or "small" when determining if I can hadouken past it, or pull out a ruler and make sure I have true line of site. Too many weird edge case rules caused by decisions that don't add enough to the game (in my opinion) to justify the extra complexity they require.
Really surprised of the production issues and really don’t understand the terrain aspect and the large board. All the really good street fighters are 2D focused. (Ex was ok... but just ok at best). Still curious but not $100 - $500 curious. (This is coming from a “hardcore” player as well).
From what I can tell it generally ends up effectively being 2-d in the regular modes anyhow, but having a board helps differentiate it from the competition, and I don't think free-for-all or 3v3 would be feasible on a linear battlefield. Honestly, thinking about it, I'd guess that the 3-d board was a concession for futureproofing the game since they have plans to add more franchises. It'd make a lot more sense if the DBZ license hadn't fallen through...
@@ccggenius free for all or 3v3 isn’t street fighter anyway...that’s more of capcom’s other VS series...in either case, that’s not what I’m looking for in a “street fighter” game. The whole time I was looking at the large board and terrain as just added space for the sake of it. I understand it’s a platform now, but doesn’t mean I have to like it for this ip.
@@ccggenius The whole game system makes so much more sense if it was a Dragon Ball Z game instead of a Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat game... To me at least the system speaks DBZ yet thats the only license that fell through...I really don't think the system is doing agood job at translating Street Fighter. But the game is fun so far so... @@randomz5641 yeah, doing a KS before having all the art approved and miniature design approved and everything? Bro, this is JASCO they suck like this, nothing on AJ. But I’ve been doing Kickstarter for 9 years now, this was absolutely ridiculous. Don’t put on excuses for a company that sucks (again, not talking about AJ).
Providing they bring out decent sets. Grendel is missing from Beowulf, because the designer thought "Beowulf" meant "big bad wolf". But it actually means "bee wolf" (bear).
I don't know if there have been other Street Fighter board games, but this seems about 30 years too late. The mechanics/movement also seem strange, given the limited left/right movement of characters in the video game.
Jasco is the company behind Universal Fighting System, this is the miniatures game equivalent. Their plan is to add more licenses over time, at which point it'll be less like you're playing Street Fighter in 3-d for some reason and more like you get to play Street Fighter in your 3-d game.
It's why i waited until the last minute to back at the 140$ lvl, i was really afraid that the fighting mechanic would be bad. After looking at a lot of game play, i thought there was hope there, and I'm so glad ti took the dive. The fighting experience is amazing, at least, for certain decks. There are obviously completely trash characters and some that are obviously top tier. Just one is completely imbalanced all of what, 34 characters ? that's pretty impressive. And they will have learned so much from this for the next KS, and the fact that it mix and matches into the same fighting system is just amazing to me. I think you missed out.
@@simonb4689 Which is the one completely imbalanced character, and in what way? I'd like to give a heads up to anyone playing it with me so it doesn't leave a bad taste if that character is chosen.

well jasco is asking for draconian prices to deliver it to europe so a lot of people are cancelling their orders, so they will probably end up selling them in their own page
They have thousands in stock, planned a head of time to sell on thier sites, can get it today preordered. Jasco claim it is extra stock that was canceled, but they do not list the stock as limited and they do not even have a clue to the numbers of canceled yet as there is still all of EU that remains undelivered. @@aaronschulz8712 - Ask *yourself* this - Why are you responding to my comment? Do you think anything you said regarding others isn't already known? Spoiler: I'd like to think everything I'm about to write is already known to the two people who read this. You're wrong. About reviews. Well, mostly. A *good* review isn't just an opinion. I argue that a review isn't an opinion at all. If you look at the definitions of those words, they may seem similar, but they're worlds apart. While almost all reviews are filtered through the perspective of the reviewer(s) and usually contain their opinions, the review itself is a critical assessment. How good it is depends on a number of factors, including associated experience (with the subject directly and as a category, reviewing and the medium in which the reviewer(s) is delivering the review), knowledge (e.g., technical aspects, the industry), and their ability to communicate effectively in the medium (e.g., writing, spoken word, video). Other factors include their personality and... opinion (which one can develop an affinity or aversion to). All this said, a product being great or not even good - may not have any bearing on how much you enjoy it. I like some board games that are definitely bad. I love some bad movies. Someone's critique or opinions on something aren't related to yours. When you find yourself reacting to something, it can sometimes be wise and/or interesting to pause and consider the *why*. It's also good to learn about boundaries (something I've never been great at). I often react to things for reasons that have nothing to do with the origin - sometimes even the topic. All this hullabaloo done, I'm glad you enjoy this game. I really am. I'm jealous. Every movie that comes out - No matter how bad the trailer is - I hope it's a good one. Every day that I see ten new games being crowdfunded, I hope they're well designed and fun. I want to enjoy them. All the best.
I agree that his points are valid but it doesn’t mean that i wouldnt like the game even if i agree with his points. Its about the weight of the points which counts at the end. When i started the hobby i believed everything Tom said because his points are agreeable but i learned that his points has nothing to do with how i feel about the game finally when i have also played the game. Sometimes i end up feeling the same way as he do, but often not. Just play the game and make your own opinions.
@@ProfOfHifi - Hi. I'm not sure what the correlation is in your response versus my comments. I also don't understand, outside of the entertainment value, why you'd watch Tom (or others) if what they relay has no impact on you. I like your use of the word "weight", as it's one I often use (and think should be used more often). At the end of the metaphorical day, I agree that everyone should think independently and form their own opinions. In addition, as I pointed out, one can enjoy something that may not rate highly in multiple areas - even overall. As an aside, I suppose it's about balance. The myriad of factors that determine how you react to something are in constant motion, which makes things interesting. I value the opinions of select others I've come to "know" - based on libraries of consistent work. This body of work also highlights personalities, which is helpful.
Dice throne has the luck of cards and the luck of dice and is maybe my favorite game. I see the points though. I would love this game at 50$ bit as is will have to pass.
I backed this KS and it's FINALLY going to arrive after such a horrendous deal of delays. I was afraid that it would be a bit bland in the gameplay department, but it's major draw are the miniatures. The game was def plagued by setbacks/delays and constant needing approval by Capcom and I feel that time and money took away from the rest of the game's design. I also feel that Joe & Alex who designed the gameplay were just too inexperienced to craft much of a game past surface level stuff. That said, I don't regret backing this and will enjoy having it alongside my other VS game's like HATE, Batman Gotham City Chronicles and King of Tokyo. However I will not be backing future games from them due to how poorly handled the whole campaign was done and that at the end of the day it'll be decently played but will probably be more of a collector game. I won't see a need more more of that from them as I can't see them really overhauling or majorly tweaking things as they wanted to make each new game from them is supposed to be fully compatible I'll have to see how the game fully plays out but looks to be a 6 or 7 outta 10 for me on a surface level glance. Hopefully I'll have a higher rating after getting some games in and have a better feel & experience for it.
Since I don't play competitive games, pretty much only play games like Star Trek Frontiers or Arkham Horror LCG,it has nothing interesting going on for me. Really it seems like something you would get just for some miniatures. The actual game just seems pretty blah.
I disagree on the gameplay. I have found this to feel very similar to a SF game when playing with other people. Everyone that has played it loved it and that ranges from 8 year old kids to 40 year old dude who have thousands of hours logged on fighting games. Thats also playing it with players who are used to great designed games like Dune:I , Blood Rage or Scythe. The only issue we ran into is that Goukens deck was too strong. I dont know if Akuma and Bison (boss characters) are as well because I havent run a game with those yet. Yes we used Goukens player deck not boss deck. Anyway I have to say I backed this game for the mini and assumed it would be meh. But I was shocked at how well the game played. Its great and very much does duplicate the feeling of a fighting game in a board game. It could be better or have some twitch or reaction elements in it but for what it it is I was actually impressed how fun it was.
Icic
I feel like Unmatched does what this game does, better and cheaper. That said... the figures in this are AMAZING.

Damn, that's a great idea. I have exceed street fighter season 1. Have they confirmed exceed will get street fighter season 2?
it will not ever become super cheap.
With how limited the prints were its prob never going to be cheaper. It will only increase in price.
But the terrain does not even fit then, the trees for example are bigger then the box from what is said.
@@brandedwolfen5498 yeah, he mentions it when it’s an issue.
The fact that every character I like was in expansions made this a hard pass for me. Cost too much for just the miniatures.
Maybe they will work on the game play for the mortal combat version .
@@olsongc8422
Capcom is the worst in the business when it comes to art approval. I doubt NRS is anywhere near as bad as Capcom when it comes to that.
AngryJoe is a HUGE Warhammer 40k player, and with that in mind - a lot of the design (and even the title of the game) start to make sense.
Has this been released yet?
If you don't see how this is replicating the actual SF game experience, you were not a serious SF player and was probably just smashing button. The whole attack/counter/bait is exactly how the game works.
I saw this game and said “I bet this game isn’t as good as Battlecon but man, those minis are amazing!” Sounds like I was right. 😄
Never played battle con, but I really enjoy this game.
Just get the Street Fighter season of Exceed and skip this.

I think CMON already copied them and added some transparent plastic to some of their XMEN minis and I predict we will see a lot more of those going forward so you gotta hand it to them for creating something that will "revolutionize" minis going forward.

It almost seems like board game designers are looking at a "worst practices" book stolen from the video game industry. Greed seems to be the common denominator.
While mistakes happen, I don't believe that the seasoned designers involved were so short-sighted, incompetent and uncreative that they weren't able to adapt existing sets.* It was an intentional / conscious decision. A choice.
Funny that this example concerns Star Wars... known for the dark side and evil empire.

I would be shocked if Angry Joe would do something like this.
Licensing is a mess with these things.
if you like combos, play a combo character (Cammy, Juri, etc.)
Exactly
Got this mainly because it will be cross compatable with any other game using the card fighting system. So far Mortal Kombat is coming.
The game can only be so in depth if they plan to make compatible games in the future. Games pretty great for what it is just my opinion.
still looking forward to the Mortal combat version, maybe they will re-release SF with updates during that KS
@@SeanUCF Yes i was more thinking if they may release 1.1 version of the rules and sell street fighter as an add on :D

I suppose its possible to do some slight tweeks, but I don't think slight tweeks would change anything significantly.
@@SeanUCF Ahh Good to know
There are multiple, MULTIPLE 4 card + combo strings. You just have to be able to "see" the strategies in the game and set them up.

@@markusschmidt9260 I agree. Calling this a miniatures game is somewhat misleading. It should be called SF The Board Game.

Looks like the potential is there, it just requires a minimum amount of homebrewing.
@@SeanUCF i agree. They used to be a great shop several years ago, but I've not ordered from them in a long time, precisely because they never have stock, like you said. And I'm a minis gamer, so it was even worse.
Again, I like GN. I am actually waiting on an order from them now. An order that is only 1 box and was placed over a week ago that they haven't shipped yet. Hence my post above.

Yikes, that is pretty slow. I usually go with Miniature Market myself, but GameNerdz is my second choice. Atomic Empire is also pretty good, but their prices are generally a tad higher.
Couldn’t agree more Mr. Vasel. I’m disappointed in it as my first Kickstarter game but I’m grateful because the Kickstarter and Mr. Vargas were my gateway into hobby board games. Thank you.
Good to have you! Don’t worry we all have a Kickstarter Boardgame of shame, for me it was the Mega Man board game. You get better at telling the good ones apart from the bad ones after a bit though!
@@Sam-vk8xd thank you.
Solid review Tom thanks for the comprehensive breakdown. Now I Don't feel bad I didn't cough over a small fortune for this one.
I don’t know. I have to play it myself before i can decide if all his point of views is a big deal for me.
@@ProfOfHifi If you can play a game or two that will always help. Most folks can deduce their enjoyment from watching play-throughs online. Certainly don’t buy a game like this to ‘try it out’.
@@ProfOfHifi watching AJ’s demo video of the gameplay during the KS campaign was enough, for me, to know this game wasn’t worth it. Those minis look great though.
@@Sam-vk8xd I don't know. It felt like Yomi with mini's. I like Yomi, i like mini's so what's not to like?
Tom says that it might be better if you know your opponents deck. Well, I have yet to play a fighting game which is not based on the fact that you need to know the other characters style. Before that every fighting game is very random.
@@ProfOfHifi This is not quite like Yomi. I love Yomi. I played fighting games competitively for years, specifically SF. Yomi gives me that feel 100%.
This game looks like it would be fun, but from a fighting game standpoint based on my experience it does not scratch the itch. Battle Con and Yomi have. Glad you like it though.
This game is so so so fun. I love it and I need more
well jasco is asking for draconian prices to deliver it to europe so a lot of people are cancelling their orders, so they will probably end up selling them in their own page
They have thousands in stock, planned a head of time to sell on thier sites, can get it today preordered. Jasco claim it is extra stock that was canceled, but they do not list the stock as limited and they do not even have a clue to the numbers of canceled yet as there is still all of EU that remains undelivered. So what happens to the hundreds that preorder off the site if all the stock is used to replace broken games and missing orders. It just feels like Jasco had a large number made for selling on site, and using canceled orders as the cover.
For card driven combat, cool minis and gameplay, recommend mythic battles pantheon
Different genre
Cool, it comes with dice masters dice!
Ha. All the people here trying to justify their purchases... Tom went easy on this game. All of his points are valid - and then some.
I passed on this knowing I can complete the street fighter video game faster than finishing 1 battle of the board game.
WTF I WATCH BOTH CHANNELS, I CANT BELEIVE THIS CROSSOVER
Same, I seen the thumbnail and was like " Hey is that Angry Joe's game?!"
Seems like a wasted opportunity. A developer should have gone over it a few times to smooth it out.
I won't see a need more more of that from them as I can't see them really overhauling or majorly tweaking things as they wanted to make each new game from them is supposed to be fully compatible
I'll have to see how the game fully plays out but looks to be a 6 or 7 outta 10 for me on a surface level glance. Hopefully I'll have a higher rating after getting some games in and have a better feel & experience for it.
Maybe Dice Throne would be the better choice? play this not that?
Dice Throne is significantly more enjoyable than this hybrid, bloated mess.
So great miniatures but a bad rulebook and mediocre gameplay? Sounds like a typical Kickstarter game.
What I’m hearing you say is just play Yomi instead.
Artist: Gnomo del bosque... a forest gnome?!
You sound like an ignorant amateur gamer ....
I felt the same way its pretty fun imo.
