I think it's one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen! Look at that awesome orange! It seems so calm, too. I don't know if they're all like that, though.
I live in Colima state (Mex), and like every 6 months I come around one of these adult spiders on the roadsides of the rural roads, they are very docile and so easy to catch.I have caught 3 so far, but I end up releasing them back couple of days later, cause am afraid I could not take care of them properly. Although, I hope some day I keep one as a pet and be able to breed one. Hell, even back at my University there use to be one roaming the grass areas in the Faculty, everyone knew the spider and teachers were fast to tell you to not bother her. She had one of the her front legs half amputated. Once she entered straight through the door in the middle of our class, the most girly girls were close to her and started screaming, so hilariou!
Gosh the coloration is so beautiful. Can't wait to take care of one in the future. I appreciate being able to see the different life stages/sizes too! Thanks a bunch.
Thanks to your channel I have decided to go ahead and purchase my first Tarantula. This video is the one that helped me decide what species to get and thanks to yourself I feel confident that I will be able to care for it properly.
My Smithi Lara is a freak of nature. She eats a roach everytime she sees them. right now she's on six day eating streak.. one roach a day. she also digs down to the bottom of the enclosure and created a slight burrow to let the food wander into. She's awesome XD
Hi. Great video. Really, really interesting and helpful. You rescued me as my first (1-5cm) slings arrived this morning! So excited. A B.smithi & a B.hamori. Been 29 years since i had my only adult female G.Porteri so it feelsl like I'm learning right from the beginning again! Slings are scary in a different way. Not afraid of their fangs like i was with my permanently defensive G.porteri but just hope I keep them alive! Justin UK
I love this channel! It's nice to see someone from the uk do things like this because you can get the same equipment :) I have a female sub adult b smithi myself, they are perfect to start out with!
I started with a b. Smith i female juvenile. Had her a couple years. She's about 4 and a half inches. Love her so much!! Beautiful spider and very docile. I take her out now and then.
i have 2 of these adult and juvenile that i have had since the summer of 2007 so thats about 5 years now, the best all rounder species of tarantula. my baby one is still only half the size of my adult and its 5 years old, they are definatley a slow growing species haha
I've had a female rose hair once, which are very easy to care for like this spider. I've fancied the beautiful colors of this species and am thinking about getting a tiny baby a while from now. Thank you for additional information that I could use to care for a Mexican red knee tarantula for future use. :)
Great video! Very interesting..would love to raise this type of tarantula as my first tarantula, and this is coming from someone who has always hated spiders. There's something about tarantulas that's really fascinating. What greatly disturbs me is that you mentioned "spiders will cling to the side of the enclosure if it is too humid"; every time I walk into petsmart to look at the tarantulas, they are always clinging to the side.. I thought they just enjoyed doing that, but now I understand why they really do it.. :/
i dont claim to be an expert on the tarantula terminology but i beleive its actually an abbreviation of Spiderling which would be the proper term for any spider offspring really, when baby tarantulas start growing and developing colors their usually as a first/second/third/etc Instar which refers something to their number of Molts
I recently found out why my spider was doing this, not enough ventilation, so i'm drilling even more, the humidity was a bit high for her. Also, I got mold around the corkbark hide area so I think she might need to last a day without a hide for now
Awesome, growth speed is dependant on temperature and feeding frequency. The warmer you keep them the more they will eat and the faster they will grow. They usually do get their adult colours within a year if kept warm and fed well but I kept my sling on the cool side so it's not been growing as fast. But once they reach 3-4 iches or so they will slow down their growth rate and only molt around once a year.
Yes this is very normal, she will most likely become more confident as she grows larger. Or she may always like to spend most of her time in her hide, every spider has slightly different habits.
hey mathew scott, don't use sand for your tarrantula. sand is known to blocking the spiders booklungs, often resulting in death! I have a link below with some good info on the species and how to care for it :D source: tarrantula owner visit the website : thehsi.org/mexican-redknee-tarantula/
Yes I get mine from 'livefoods direct'. Keep them dry with egg cartons or cardboard tubes for hiding in and feed them fresh fruit and either crushed cat or dog food. I keep them in the same kind of enclosure I keep most of my tarantulas in, a medium exo terra faunarium. You can just grab them with your hands or tongs or use a smaller container to transfer them into the tarantula's enclosure.
excellent video. I have just bought a juvenile Brachypelma Auratum female. She is lovely. I think my substrate may be too wet though as she like the sides of the enclosure and the roof of her cave.
I''m having that same issue with my juvenile b smithi. She has a hide in her enclosure and everything but she prefers hugging the glass and trying to climb it.
Same 1 meal/week for spiderlings or should I increase it? Also what do you recommend for enclosure size? Twice as big for L/W/H as the spider's tip-tip length?
I live in Brasil and good substrate is something quite hard to fing, when I had carnivorous plants I used a substrate made from sphagnum river or construction sand (really doesnt kjow how you would call it, is a ckear thick grained sand) and coconut powder (a brown powder made from coconut husks) in a 3/2/1 ratio. It was soft and didn't got to wet, like half of its volume in water would make it just a little moist. Do you think it wiupd work? Its great against fungus and algiaes ( or algis, dont know the corrwct form). Excuse me for my mistakes as English is not my first language
I've been looking to get a tarantula for a while now and I want to get an easy-to-care, low maintenance and calm species (so I handle it and let friends see etc.). Would you reccomend a redknee for a beginner? and beginner tips are very much appreciated. Thanks!
Forgot in her native land a wasp is her Predator. The wasp hypnotizes the Tarantula with it's wing's. When disoriented it stings the Spider , carries it to it's burrow to feed it's young . The weird thing is A person can take a common pencil and hypnotize the Tarantula ! Matilda she was so docile it truly was a Hippy except when crickets were romping in Her house !
It's hard to suggest why she might be doing this, could be for a few reasons. Could you make a video of her enclosure? If so let me know once it's up and I will take a look. Otherwise just make sure she has a nice dark hide to hide in and like you said plenty of ventilation with a dry substrate.
I want a red knee but I understand they should be kept in higher temperatures. however, im one who prefers it colder in my room, and live in northern Illinois where it can get rather cool up here in winter. my question is, can I use a heat lamp to kepp these spiders at temp? or do I have to keep the heat cranked?? thanks!
Ahmm you can use heat pads... I dont recommend heat lamps that much i dont know but it may cause damage to the t? Im not sure XD... Just heat pads will be fine to be sure XD
kothDG12O thanks for the info. but 70 - 90 degrees is way too hot for me. im somebody who prefers it no warmer than 50..can i get away with using a heat lamp and a thermometer? so i can monitor the enclosure without burning the T?
no you can't use a heat lamp ! Buy a " how to Mag " please I hate toasty Tarantulas I like my Tarantula's XXX love my Tarantulas and Spiders without them we'd be up to our arses in insects ! Maybe the end of life as We knew it ! When in doubt kiss a Spider ! Not like you kiss your old - lady anywho !
Aloris Fall I successfully used a heat lamp in a large enclosure, only on one side and offer a hide... They know how long to stay under it. Don't use any heating element in an acrylic cage. Make sure its a metal lid type cage place a small heat lamp on one side. They will usually choose the hide on the cold side at night.. do some tanning for part of the day and move around later. Ive had success with it.
Tank you mine is a small orange colour mexican red leg or knee the pet shop I got mine didn't give me eny advice on care at all I have the heat matt and running on a thomstat but I didn't notice haw many crikits to fed her once a day , weekly thanks your a grat help
I have a question, i am about to get one and i am so unsure what sice of enclosure i should get, what would you say is the minimum of measurements( in cm) ? 😊
How many and how often should i feed a Brachypelma smithi? there's a lot of different answers online and i am afraid of over feeding or under feeding my tarantula when i get her :/
Hey bud I'm really thinking about getting a b. Smithi by keeping the substrate dry does that mean just don't hydrate the substrate or is there a specific method of dehumidification also do you have a video on how to handle these t's. Thanks - Will
Well i'm not TarantulaAddict, but i think i can answer your questions as well ;D About keeping the substrate dry: just don't hydrate it. The water that naturally evaporates from the water dish provides just enough humidity. It's also okay to let the water dish overflow a little now and then, so the substrate around the dish is wet. My b. smithi likes it really dry though, and pretty much only gets close to moist substrate when in premolt. About handling these guys: they're really docile, calm and great for handling! I really recommend you to get a redknee as first pet tarantula. I'm also pretty sure that TarantulaAddict has some videos on his channel about handling b. smithi's, or just tarantulas in general. If not, there are plenty of videos about how to handle 'em on youtube, just look around ^^
I got mine a more square tank, but that’s because he likes to climb and used to get stuck in the top of his old cage (he would be hanging from the top with his claws stuck in it). He likes being up at the top and there’s a ton of scratch marks. It’s like he’s trying to dig out. On his old tank, the lid wasn’t slid all the way shut and he was trying to get out. He left scratches on the plastic. No idea how long he was at his escape... he’s a weird little thing :/
Could someone tell me whats the mortality rate on spiderlings? I had one, under the exact same conditions shown in this video, but the poor fellow didn´t make it through the molting... Did i do something wrong or does this sadly just happen sometimes?
during the molt, you need to keep the humidity up. it should not be dry as under normal condition. also it is very important not to touch them at all during the molt, unless you can see complications.
Im planning on getting my first Taranula and I decided on a Mexican Red Knee. Am I going to need a heating lamp for it. And what kind of enclosure do you recommend?
before my tarantula molt she block the entrance of its hide and keep her self there in 3 weeks and she molted .. 1 week after she molt she block her entrance again without eating ! is it normal ? what should i do ? :( pls help me
When is it ok to put my mexican red knee in a biger tank its a juvenile at the moment ive got it in a small tank would a bumpy ride by bus stress it out is it ok to put in a bigger tank or leave it to settle down first can any one tell me yes it be ok to put in bigger tank duo to bumpy trip back or leave it in small tank for another day
I'm new to owning a B.smthi, and it's been two and a half weeks since I got her, but she still climbs around the walls, I know for a fact that the substrate is not wet, and today I drilled more vent holes in her enclosure because I was thinking it might be moist in there? I don't really know what to do lol
Hey, nice video TarantulaAddict. Am I the only one that just wants to hug the tarantula its so beautiful and cute😂
I think it's one of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen! Look at that awesome orange! It seems so calm, too. I don't know if they're all like that, though.
Yep lol
No you aint the only one
Nope there really fun to take care of

Haha thats awesome! Im thinking of getting a t too :)
These are usually as docile if not more than a rosey but every spider is different so you could be unlucky and get a mean one.
Hi. Great video. Really, really interesting and helpful. You rescued me as my first (1-5cm) slings arrived this morning! So excited.

I started with a b. Smith i female juvenile. Had her a couple years. She's about 4 and a half inches. Love her so much!! Beautiful spider and very docile. I take her out now and then.
I do feed mine a taco every once in a while. Just to keep it real.
That was a very useful video, thanks :{D
Mexican Red Knees are my up most favorite tarantula.
My juvi is tiny up to yours. Your vids are really good i learnt loads from this one. Many thanks
very nice video! I enjoy to watch your vids a lot! Please keep it up!

Thank you so much for your video, most interesting and has convinced me that the Mexican is my next spider from my chilean red rose
Thanks, glad you found it useful.
Great video.great tips
Awesome! Can't wait till mine gets larger!
I used a wet sponge in a bottle cap to water a spiderling I cared for once upon a time. worked great
Glad you found it useful.
Great video.
Very nice looking T & sweet vid.
Thanks :) And yes the B. smithi is hard to beat in my opinion.

I got an half inch B smithi sling in may this year and it has molted 4 times since then and has its adult colors now.
thank you for this video
Thanks :) I would recommend using coir, commonly sold as eco-earth.
Thanks that means a lot!
Nice vid!
Thanks for the info I'm trying to find out the best tarantula to be my first and I think this is the one. :)
Thank you so much I love your videos I am subscribe!
Amo mucho esta tarantula 😍😍😍😍
I recently found out why my spider was doing this, not enough ventilation, so i'm drilling even more, the humidity was a bit high for her. Also, I got mold around the corkbark hide area so I think she might need to last a day without a hide for now

Well fingers crossed I might have some slings for sale soon.
Sorry to hear that, if you get another one place a heat mat on one side of the enclosure.
Hi steven nice video mate :) Hott
I liked the video ive had spiders before but not a mexican red knee
Ah ok thanks for the advice :D
Cheers :)
Cheers.

I want to cuddle and kiss that cuddley spider
my red knee has not eaten for about 3 weeks and she does not seem to be in molt any ideas? And what temperature should she be at?
It may not be hungry these guys can go without food for a long time

And yes crickets can jump but not as high as locusts.
have you had a Kahlenbergi? How do you keep that one?
How is it like?
The goliath bird-eaters scare me somewhat, and the huntsman spiders scare me beyond belief, but for some reason I'm cool with this spider.
It's hard to suggest why she might be doing this, could be for a few reasons. Could you make a video of her enclosure? If so let me know once it's up and I will take a look. Otherwise just make sure she has a nice dark hide to hide in and like you said plenty of ventilation with a dry substrate.
Your videos wanna make me buy a tarantula so bad. My mom would kill me though

Can you make a video on how to care for a brachypelma albopilosum
I have a question, i am about to get one and i am so unsure what sice of enclosure i should get, what would you say is the minimum of measurements( in cm) ? 😊
Some exotic pet stores might have them but I'm sure most will find one for you if you ask. Or you could get one online.
Cheap and beautiful, also good for begginers
How many and how often should i feed a Brachypelma smithi? there's a lot of different answers online and i am afraid of over feeding or under feeding my tarantula when i get her :/
It's refers to a baby Tarantualas ,still developing its colours etc.

Could someone tell me whats the mortality rate on spiderlings? I had one, under the exact same conditions shown in this video, but the poor fellow didn´t make it through the molting... Did i do something wrong or does this sadly just happen sometimes?
during the molt, you need to keep the humidity up. it should not be dry as under normal condition. also it is very important not to touch them at all during the molt, unless you can see complications.
i have a rosey and she is very docile. I love her shes like 3 and a half inches. Is this species as agressive or more than a rosey?
Im planning on getting my first Taranula and I decided on a Mexican Red Knee. Am I going to need a heating lamp for it. And what kind of enclosure do you recommend?
Yes they require live food and no sunlight is not important, just don't keep them in direct sunlight to avoid "cooking" the spider.
I plan on buying one of these. I would like to know whats the minimum size enclosure a 1inch would need?
before my tarantula molt she block the entrance of its hide and keep her self there in 3 weeks and she molted .. 1 week after she molt she block her entrance again without eating ! is it normal ? what should i do ? :( pls help me
What brand water dish is that and where did you get it from?
When is it ok to put my mexican red knee in a biger tank its a juvenile at the moment ive got it in a small tank would a bumpy ride by bus stress it out is it ok to put in a bigger tank or leave it to settle down first can any one tell me yes it be ok to put in bigger tank duo to bumpy trip back or leave it in small tank for another day
shame people keep thinking the smithi and hamorii are the same species when they never have been
I'm new to owning a B.smthi, and it's been two and a half weeks since I got her, but she still climbs around the walls, I know for a fact that the substrate is not wet, and today I drilled more vent holes in her enclosure because I was thinking it might be moist in there? I don't really know what to do lol
Hey, nice video TarantulaAddict. I recieved, what I believe to be, a "Red Knee" Tarantula sling or spiderling as a Christmas gift and am still quite new to raising Tarantulas as pets and I was Wondering if you had a twitter account so that I could ask you a few questions on caring, maintaining, etc. I could also post a few pictures and see if you could help me determine what type of Tarantula I have, I would appreciate any help given TarantulaAddict.
TarantulaAddict, could I use sand I got from the hardware store? Or dry top soil?
