The whole culture in government or council controlled entities need to be completely reviewed, but its not going to be fixed as the issues stem from high work loads & tight deadlines (often doing the work of 2 - 3 people per person), lack of training of staff in completing their duties, and lack of actual coordination of staff to complete reviews or tasks. I have witnessed and been pushed out, along with many others who struggled in Council.

I never realised NZ had any investigative reporters left. All gone to Australia.. All NZ has is 6 week qualified TECH diploma for reporters
And once they reach Australia they work for the murdoch press and no true investigating actually happens

The CAA has been problematic for years. Even reports of drones flying illegally dangerously close to aircraft is met with a "we're not interested" reply. I feel for the good people that are still there, the few that remain. NZTA went through a similar toxic management situation not too many years ago. The cause seems to be politicians wanted great results and statistics rather than realistic results.

I applaud the whistleblowers, good on them, if you don't speak up nothing will change, and it needs to change in all Government departments, as it has been left to slide under the previous Government, so now's a time to improve under a new Government.
It is quite ironic that after six years of a Kindness government, all government departments are marred with bullying and toxic culture😢.

The two aviation accidents they referred to were adventure tourism activities, a ballon flight and a parachuting flight. Nothing at all to do wth the airline industry yet all the images were of airliners.
The airline industry is largely self regulating and has been for many decades.

Not a 'this Govt' thing as this has been a failing culture for many years. Major delays when submitting any compliance paperwork (like... a year of delays). Varying replies and answers with no consistency to the reply. No one is driving this dept...

ICAO - but they will only audit if invited by CAANZ and it's for international civil aviation. For general aviation, CAANZ used to have "spot checks' and surveillance.
Also Transport Accident Investigation Commission - at any time they like.
This countries whole aviation industry is rooted. Basics like AKL Airport 90 minutes for luggage to arrive. Menzies Aviation are cowboys. Let alone, actual safety issues like this.

Workplace toxic environment is bad and can lead to many bad consequences but why was AVIATION SAFETY chosen for the heading? To get people interested and watch the video? This sort of sensationalism can give travelers anxiety
It’s a shock headline. Designed to spark more people to contact their MP to look 👀 into this. The more that do that around the country, the more likely the guvmint will have to do something.
In the world of aviation, almost everything relates to safety, culture included. If internal CAA employees can't voice their opinions without being punished, how are pilots going to feel when they need to report a near-accident? Non-punitive culture in aviation is crucial to fostering open reporting, allowing lessons to be learned before people die.
@@nuurushean9895 There is another page in this debate that relates to operators that do not affect the travelling public that deserves recognition. Some of us at the bottom of the heap have long been wary of CAA interface involving incidents that should be used for educational purposes and safety improvements. When you have the current director ,on record, stating that CAA will use enforcement as a method of education, I am reminded of the of the criteria to be described as a cult mentality.

My sole interaction with the CAA was emailing their enquiry system with a simple question, and never receiving a reply. Typical bureaucracy.
I think the camera focusing in on their clothes might no be honouring their anonymity.

One sided. Overly dramatized. Not a single shred of actual evidence, which is odd in an age of cell phone cameras. Just a random piece of paper that lists how many complaints have been made. That buzzword word "toxic" being used over and over screams special snowflake, and those are the sorts of people who will make endless complaints at the drop of a hat. So, sorry, I'm not buying it. Not until I see some actual evidence and some actual journalism. Also, it's very hard to connect what these people are saying to actual aircraft safety. Is the CAA trying to do some sort of Erebus coverup? Or are the higher ups just sick of listening to endless complaints made by the most entitled generation that has ever lived? Hard for the public to decide when you only report one side of the story.

It’s easy to make accusations from a bystander point of view. By all means have an independent view of the CAA. They’re not immune from internal politics that will disaffect some employees. In terms of safety we have Rules to operate within. Safety is an individual participant, Company, and Corporate, responsibility. The CAA cannot directly prevent an accident, we do our best to do that from a self preservation point of view. Caa audit and test pilots as well as Operators.
Don’t dump on them without examining your/our prejudice and bias.
Keep an open mind.

Employment and employment law in nz is a joke. Bullying should not be part of Employment law.
The staff and management force out competent ppl should be investigated to a high degree including finances and inappropriate associations. At this point they should be stood down with zero work place connection.

Another story? This is different from bullying issue? It was not like that when CAA was in the Aviation House in Petone. It used to be a good workplace. Staff were respected by the NZ and international aviation industry. The ICAO safety audit report was impressive. they used to have a Just Culture which was introduced in 2006 or 2007.

I thought the reporter said CAA is a government agency. Why do they have a CEO? I thought CEO is more apt for corporations. Maybe thats where the confusion lies. Is a corporate body or government body? Their interests are mutually exclusive. Corporations are only interested in the line going up (at any cost, including toxic workplace, shortcuts, unrealistic goals) where as governmental agency is beholden to tax payers, i.e public.
The CEO title is corporate but the title under the Civil Aviation Act 1990 Section 72(I) is Director of Civil Aviation tasked with the functions and powers under the Act or rules and regulations made under the Act.
CEO of CAA and Avsec is the Director of Civil Aviation under legislation. CAA itself is a board that hires the Director. The Director then runs the actual organization itself.

@@dimvoly Other than China state regulatory bodies do little more than audit and approve airline company management systems. Airlines have their own safety reporting systems and if a report meets certain criteria the regulator is then informed.

As few people go ballooning or parachuting no one much cares about it, but depict the problem as endangering thousands of air travellers and they get views.

CAA are the worst bureaucrats possible. A cleanout has been necessary for years and now it's happening. The staff complaints are merely the whining of the pointless nobodies who face inevitable redundancy. For balance, MM should interview the victims of CAA bureaucracy - the airline pilots and owners. They would give him a much different story. Poor journalism.

This wasn't about CAA bureaucracy issues, it was about workplace harassment/bullying. They cited the logged incidents, and you have a group of insiders speaking out against it. I'd agree that it would've been good to get the CEO's opinion on camera too for more balance.
@@dimvoly it would have been good if they gave a little more specificity about the details of the complaints too. It showed that they had spent money on Lawyers. But no details about payouts for personal greivances or anything like that. So maybe the complaints have little substance.

Ive been sitting in airports all over the north island for 3 days trying to get home , no accommodation no food no answers no good. Not flying ever again!!! Fly me here fly me there and canceled 4 out of 5 flights. I was to fly wellington to nelson, i went wellington to Auckland to palmerston back to Auckland now in wellington, when am i going home ???
