Hey April can you do a video on how to purchase ISBNs if your a non US resident? I do own a LLC which registered in the US. When you go on Bowker’s website you have to register but there are no other countries except fro US states.
Thank you for such an informative video. I suppose I would need to clone another ISBN for a spiral vs paperback. Do you offer a video on copyrights and choosing the best printing companies in addition to KDP?
Yes cloning for spiral bound is great. You need new isbns for any different size or format. I do have a video on filing your copyright through copyright.gov and I have a list of printers in my resource library for authors here: www.selfpubmadesimple.com/resource-library
Thank you so much for this video! I just purchased my ISBNs! YAYYYY!!! 🥳 I’m going through the steps to assign my paperback. I have a subtitle and I see it is optional. Should I add my subtitle or just leave that field blank? Thank you.
A subtitle is a great place for keywords and to help your customers know what the book is about. Definitely use them! Even better if the subtitle is well designed to take advantage of important keywords for your book!
I think so but you can always reach out to the site for questions in case you are concerned. You may want to contact the Secretary of State office in the state where your LLC is registered.
If you are in the IS, I recommend LCCN and CIP Block so you can provide everything libraries need. I always want book stores and libraries to see everything they would expect in a traditionally published book!
Hello, thank you for the info video, for the publisher's name fill in blank, what should I write in as a self-publisher with no affiliated company, is it okay to write in a made-up publisher name?
I have a question: If we set the publication date for a later date and click on "Forthcoming" for the title status, when the publication date arrives/approaches, do we need to manually change the status to "Active Record." If yes, would the "pending" status for the ISBN (once we make the change) affect our book in any way? P.S. Thank you so much for uploading this video! It was very helpful. :)
So helpful, but I find myself confused by the 10 ISBNs option. Does the 10 ISBNs mean you can use for only one title with multiple formats or would it cover multiple books all under different titles?
Both! I typically use one for my ebook, paperback and hardcover so I have enough for 3+ books when I purchase a block of 10. If I only purchased theee I would pay about the same!
Great video. Thanks. I watched to the end, but didn't see the link for getting a barcode. Also: You mention your library-code video, and I see the image on screen, but I've yet to see how to get to it! Might just be me. Anyway, I'm looking for it now!
Hi, i haven’t determind the final price of my childrens book. Can the price be left blank? If not, i can put 13.99 for now but can i modify it in the future?
You can leave the price off if you want and yes you can change the price in the future if you prefer. Some book stores want the price on there so ask around to the stores you would want to use. $13.99 and $18.99 are what I’ve been using for paperback and hardcovers but I also think it’s time for a price hike because the royalty is getting smaller and smaller.
I suggest doing some research on pricing for competitor books. For paperback childrens books I have been entering retail price of $13.99 and for hardcover, $18.99 to $21.99 depending on how much discount % you are going to give.
Thanks for sharing this great video. I have a question. I already have book one and two of a book on Amazon KDP with their free ISBN, can I publish book three and four with my own ISBN or can I unpublished the first two books and buy my own ISBN and then republish?
Hi. If I live outside America do I need to get a library of congress number? I got my ISBNs from the Australian Thorpe Bowler ready for KDP and others.
Helpful video. I have 2 questions. Can I get my ISBN's before the book is complete? Also, I have my main title, but I am wrestling with the subtitle. Do I need to have the title and subtitle set in stone before buying the ISBN? Thanks for any help.
You can buy before the book is complete and you can wait to assign your title until after you purchase them. Are time to do some keyword analysis to get your best possible subtitle!
@@SelfPubMadeSimple Thank You. I bought some. I have not thought about keywords as far as regards a subtitle. I will have to look into do that. Thank You again!
Great question. I would recommend googling ISBNs and your country. There may be specific requirements you should be aware of. For example Canada and some countries give you ISBNs for free. Others like Australia have a slightly different URL to use (Thorpe Bowker).
I originally selected the ebook file type as mobi because I was going to publish with kdp first and then go wide, assuming that I would need another isbn for epub. Now that I have published on kdp can I change the isbn type to epub without using another isbn to go wide?
That’s a good question. I would reach out to Bowker to ask that because I am not sure what their policy is about it. I hope you will let us know on the comments!
I was unable to change the ISBN File Type. It looks like you need a seperate ISBN for mobi and EPUB types. Here is a copy of the response I received from Bowker about changing ISBN File Types for ebooks: --------------------------------------------------- Per the ISBN users-manual: • Where a specific qualifying e-book is available in different underlying file formats such as EPUB, .pdf etc., each different format that is published and made separately available should be given a separate ISBN. If the publication is migrating to a new version of the file format (e.g., EPUB2 to EPUB3), then a separate ISBN is essential if both versions are available simultaneously or if retailers and customers need to distinguish the versions. The purpose of an ISBN is to identify a particular book in a particular format. You can change the file type prior to publication of the Ebook. --Bowker Customer Support Representative --------------------------------------------------- @Eric Armstrong @@SelfPubMadeSimple
In My Identifiers, under eBook file type choices are ePUB and Kindle. I am using KDP and uploading my mss with ePUB. Which choice is the correct choice for me?
If your book is reflowable then choose ePub. If it is a fixed format (like a childrens book with text on the images) then choose mobi and upload that to KDP.
Payment failed error 301 and 606 coming while I check out with my international visa card. Is it mandatory to use only USA issued cards for payment? Thanks
I applied for my ISBN and put my last name as my publishing company, now Bowker says they need to confirm with my publishing company? Is this a problem...should I have put my whole name as publisher? What should I do now to get my ISBN numbers?
Awesome video, thank you.
I will be following your steps really soon.
Best wishes!
I forgot to ask you, do I need an ISBN per language?
Yes
Great video, and I didn't know that ePUB was the best format for going wide. Thank you!
Yes it is required for Draft to Digital, Apple and others.
@@SelfPubMadeSimple i learned something and it is very important to my new book from you today. thank you

Hi April can I register my ISBNs under my US LLC? I don’t live there but I do have a US LLC.
I think so but you can always reach out to the site for questions in case you are concerned. You may want to contact the Secretary of State office in the state where your LLC is registered.

Hello, thank you for the info video, for the publisher's name fill in blank, what should I write in as a self-publisher with no affiliated company, is it okay to write in a made-up publisher name?
You can create an imprint that you use for your books or use your own name.
Sure! It becomes your “imprint”.
Sure - make up an “imprint” and consider a LLC when it makes sense.
Yes you can do that.

Yes you can update when the book is live. It doesn’t impact availability of your. Title but it’s good to keep everything up to date.
