With the release of the Netflix live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, people are bound to compare it to the original animated version from 2005. Different mediums, different cast, created almost 20 years apart from one another, you can name all sorts of reasons why they could differ, so… we’ll do just that and find out just how different they are. Let’s get started.

I saw a tweet describing it as "Avatar Abridged" and, aside from Bumi's character assassination, yeah, it's an accurate description.

definitely not better than the animated but i still thoroughly enjoyed the show and am hopeful for more live action seasons to come

Honestly im really happy they didn’t do a one to one thing because then it would just be watching the original avatar for like the hundredth time just in a different media style. With it being the way they choose to write it you get to experience a new take on it which is something I personally enjoyed and yes it might not be as good as the original but it still is a really good show

The corporate writers for Netflix really need to get a different job other than writing for shows and movies. Major themes are completely written out of the first season, or simply reduced to their basic components. Nothing deep in this shell at all. Don’t think about the lessons given to the audience in the actual series. We can’t tackle those themes here. The narrative and character arcs are bland at best and character. Assassination at worst. The visuals of the bending and locations are pretty neat, though too many stories are being condensed into one which dilutes their importance in the universe. If you’re going to make a series over a movie, why are you removing important locations, folklore, and narrative beats? You have the time. Exposition dumping is not how you tell a story. Show don’t tell really needs to come back into the art of modern cinematography. I think the actors are doing a pretty good job, though their direction is not terribly great, which is also a common theme for Netflix series. I appreciate viewing some of the darker elements that we did not get to see in the animated series, though there are definitely good arguments that they were executed better in the series than in live action. It is a good rule of thumb to follow that. If the original creatives run away from the project due to creative differences, fans of the series should probably run as well.

I dont think enough people know that the creators of the show worked on and approved Eps 1-4 and actually wanted to make more drastic changes than netflix wanted (netflix wanted the adaptation to be closer to the OG) thats where the “creative differences” come from and they only left after getting the green light on the new animated series they’re doing so if that took longer its a good chance we would be watching a very different show called an “avatar live action” and yall would still be complaining

I personally don't think that the original show starts being as good as it is until the gang arrives at the northern water tribe (with the exception of the storm and blue spirit) so I'm more than ok with the first season being rearranged a bit.
I think the visuals are perfect for the show, and I think the cast is good. The dialogue is terrible though and some choices in rearranging seem entirely misguided. It's like 90% of the way there, they just need to improve the writing especially for book two which is so much better than book one in the original.

In my opinion, if you want a close second to the animated Iroh, having Garry Olmen do a combination of the personalities of animated Iroh and Ignightus from the Legend of Spyro trilogy would have been as close as anyone alive today could get

  • @albertovaldivia6132
    @albertovaldivia6132 3 місяці тому +1

I think iroh and zuko are perfect in the adaptation, most perfect thing about the show that actually draw me in to watch it, the biggest dissapointments was the nonexistent love connection between aang and katara (couldve hinted it a lil but its completely nonexistent) and king bumi (hate his character change)

I just wish they gave the original creators control over everything like they did with the One Piece live action. So many things were so cringe and you don't even mention the horribly camp costume design. Hard to believe not one person looked at the costumes and wondered how they’re so clean and bright like being worn for the first time. The show was never gonna be perfect but I think if they had known that giving the originators creative control made for successful adaptations before the show was made it would’ve been way better. I hope Netflix learns.

Irohs comedy and light heartened with zuko is what made little soldier boy hit so hard. It would still hit the same, but you need to get the viewers to understand. He's hiding his pain every day.

I only really had few minor issues with the live-action. Main issue, the episodes and the story felt rushed and bloated due to trying to fit so much in only 8 episodes. Should have stretched it out to more episodes, maybe 12. Second issue, the acting could have been better.

I did not like they changed Oma and Shu into a lesbian couple.
I didn't like the snide comment during Koh the Facestealer scene.
I don't like the rewrite on Zuko's burn origins, or Sokka's sexism...both were very important for his and other character growth.
I don't like how fast Katara is progressing BEFORE finding her first master. She basically becomes the team tank after meeting Jet.
Kyoshi island was cool seeing Her possess Aang and beat everyone down. But, I preferred seeing Suki kiss Sokka's cheek over seeing them kiss.
Beyond those complaints, it's been okay. I look forward to seeing Bloodbending, Toph, and the dragondance (if they're even added...)
The original is still better in every way, imo.

I thought it was really good. It was never stated that it was trying to be a one-to-one thing except in live action. So those who WANTED that would naturally get disappointed. Sorry that it isn't the way you wish it was, respectfully accept it and move on or watch it anyway. However, the ones who EXPECTED or DEMANDED it to be, are the ones who actively hate it because they set themselves up for disappointment by having unrealistic expectations. It was meant to be its own version of the same story. An adaptation. A retelling. A different take on it. And it does that very well. Judge it by what it said it was supposed to be, not by what some salty fans who's voices yell the loudest demanded of it. People should enjoy it for what it tried to be and what it is. Otherwise, they can just find something else to watch instead of complaining life didn't go their way this time.

The show is truly amazing and sooo much better than the movie. Like you said, people have an issue with it because it’s not a 1 to 1 adaptation of it, but no one ever said it would be. I can say the only thing I didn’t like in this one is that he didn’t learn or at least practice another element in this season at all. Hoping to see that in the next season. Overall: 8.5/10

I think you missed a giant point of why people are mad at the adaptation. We never needed them to further explain why the fire nation was so bad. We got to see it every eposode. They should have minimized that because not showing it and just hearing it from people you meet would have been far stronger. Which is what the show does. I think thats why the creators left. Imagine they got tk do what they wanted in live action. We might get something as revolutionary as the avatar the last airbender animated series, but hollywood wont let them cook.

They made Aang so vulnerable, weak and nerfed in the entire series apart from this final battle, which he gave himself to ocean spirit and no control over anything!! He never did anything heroic in the whole Netflix series; he was never decisive, and couldn't even win a battle. All he was doing depends on the team entirely, past Avatars and keep moaning about his grief and guilt!! The whole Kyoshi part was unnecessary and her advices to Aang more like threats than a wisdom. When she was the one who saved the village instead of Aang, the show took a massive downhill already!! They also shifted the purpose of visiting the Northern Water Tribe!!😅
Katara became a master waterbender at the end of the series without a single lesson from an actual master was laughable😅
