The Kinks were an English rock band formed in London in 1963 by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s. The Kinks' music drew from a wide range of influences, including American R&B and rock and roll initially and later adopting British music hall, folk, and country. The band gained a reputation for reflecting English culture and lifestyle, fuelled by Ray Davies' wittily observational writing style. The Kinks and the songs of Ray Davies are now rightfully established as a great British institution. From the opening riff of You Really Got Me, The Kinks’ influence as pioneers in heavy metal, power pop, conceptual albums, and theatrical shows can be detected in much modern music.
This, and much more, can be seen on this UA-cam channel exclusively devoted to these true British originals.

This is a great album track. You can't buy those greatest hits albums or compilations with a band like the Kinks. You'll miss too many songs like these.
Great comment, and these "unknown" songs are usually much richer and deeper than the hits. There was no filler from Village Green to Muswell Hillbillies, all songs were great and Arthur has so many gems.
So true.............
I am discovering this! So true.
Song still brings a tear to the eye of this old Punk Rocker.
This album is a masterpiece.
The Kinks are the purest English rock band in history. Period.
The Jam.
I agree, you don't get anymore English than The Kinks. They are as quintessentially English as Dickens, Wordsworth and Shakespeare.
'Your wealth will never make you stronger' God save the KINKS!
and you think that money buys everything...
One of the most important bands ever
Dave Davies' backing vocals always blow me away.
Matthew Wright Especially since I think it is a fair bet the song is about Dave.
+Patrick Coleman Duncan This and Strangers - two songs for two brothers...
Once thought it might be about Pete Quaife deciding to leave the band, but now I suspect you're right about Dave being the "addressee" on this one.
In the Kinks musical "Sunny Afternoon", this is sung by "Ray" to "Dave". OK, that's not conclusive, but Ray did have a lot of input to the musical - and, besides, I think Ray has actually said that it is about Dave, which I guess is pretty conclusive.
@@adolforodolfo6929 Of course, it's about Dave. "You're self assured and dressed in funny clothes" does not describe Quaife, Jimmy Page, or other candidates people are posting here.
One of the best! Wes Anderson must be saving it for something big !
Ray Davies is assuredly touched by God
Love Ray and Dave singing together.
The kinks got shut of of the american british invasion over bullshit, best thing that ever happened to them imo. Their music is beyond the who, the stones, clapton, zep, etc. Ray Davies, so underrated, one of the greatest rock song writers of all time. Cant ever get enough Kinks.
I agree. Why didn't the Kinks get up there with all of those other bands? They shoulda been played way more then The Who. That band sucks!
Ben Cook Im kind of glad they never went psychedelic or cosmic or symphonic or progressive or anything overindulgent like that. I love the Beatles acid phase and the Stones' "Her Satanic Majesty's Request" space rock stuff, and The Beach Boys later orchestral work, but The Kinks were always the down to Earth ones.
True! But it's funny a lot of people regard "see my friends" as one of the first psychedelic songs 😄
Ben Cook they were the biggest influence on Pete Townshend, no doubt!!
Robbie Clark I actually would be interested to see what a psychedelic kinks album would sound like.
You've come a long way from the runny-nosed and scruffy kid I knew
You had such good ways
I can remember the little things that always made you smile
They made you happy
Now you think you're wiser because you're older and you think
That money buys everything
And you think you need no one to guide you
But you're still a long way from home.
You've come a long way, you're self-assured and dressed in
Funny clothes, but you don't know me.
I hope you find what you are looking for with your car and handmade overcoats
But your wealth will never make you stronger 'cos you're still a
Long way from home
Yes, you're still a long way from home
Apparently Ray singing about brother Dave
@@aldoesposito8195 I think he's also singing about himself too.
@@aldoesposito8195 "You're self assured and dressed in funny clothes" _ Just watched Dave on Beat Club singing "Death of a Clown" (it's here on UA-cam) in VERY funny clothes. It's about Dave.
Top 5, most underrated Kinks tune.
Never has a single song completely encapsulated what my inner conversation sounds like on a daily basis. I'd want this played at my funeral. Far, far in the future :)
I love the whole album especially this tune.
This has gradually become my "go to" Kinks album. 'Village Green' is still my favourite but in the last few years I've played this album more than any other. So many amazing songs.
@@NewFalconerRecords I couldn't agree more. Everyone is a gem. I want to get Village Green because I've heard its really good. Its on my bucket list.
Ray wrote this about his little brother, Dave. Man do i love this song!
This song makes me cry,i think of me as a kid ,and that my son is just like me Tears n Joy Forever,...................
A lot of his stuff does that to me ,its amazing he can do that to me
Magnificent song, but also the same goes for Ducks on the wall. Ray is an Artist of the highest caliber.
This is my Fathers day song. Soulful.
God save the Kinks
The Kinks are the Kings
Just picked up this album, which I owned on vinyl decades ago... so great to hear it again after all these years. This is one of my very favorites from that record.
Kinks are awesome!!!!!!
Ray said in his book( X Ray) that this song was about his brother Dave
i always figured it was about Jimmy Page....its a little mean for Dave....i think Ray just SAID that so Page wouldnt sue him....lol
@@edwhite7475 NOPE. Are you daft? Ray did not know Jimmy Page in childhood. Lines like "You're self assured and dressed in funny clothes" Page did not wear funny clothes. Dave, on the other hand used to get his clothes from a London theatrical costume company. He even used to wear a fake 18th century sword.
@@Themanwhocameback2 wow, a real expert shows up to answer all my queries on Ray Davis' lyrics.
It MUST be MY lucky day.
And did he write Lola about your mother?
Basement Benders cover of this is really good
love the kinks!
Absolutely love this song, it’s so pensive and introspective
Beautiful song!!
Unbelievable album, group

better than any Beatles album, no tracks to skip, unlike the beatles with yellow submarine, maxwell silver hammer and all the second rate songs on the white album, God save the Kinks!

Colin Drayer who are you?
Ayyy Lmao well eat poop...yup.
@Брандон Кeллeр like Bilbo Baggins?
LOLA APPROVES.
ahhh :)
Eu acho que eles nunca tocaram no Brasil?
Sounds like The Stones
Only Better.
Yeah I noticed Dave's voice is very similar to Keith Richards' voice, especially when singing higher notes like in this song
Only 32 likes?

Monkey for Monkey.........
I hear a little Bob Dylan influence.
Official audio my ass. It’s too fast.
