- With the new GMAT Focus Edition announced, you might be wondering which test to take. In this video, Arun Jagannathan explains the 5 critical differences between the GMAT Original and the GMAT Focus Edition. Find out which test is the best fit for your goals and how to prepare effectively.
The new version of the GMAT will be available until 2024, and test takers have the option to choose between the GMAT Focus edition and the current edition until the current version gets retired sometime in 2024. Scores from the GMAT Focus will only be used for the next admissions cycle in 2024.

The new version is a shorter, more real-world-focused test that's almost an hour and a section shorter than the current version. Test takers have the option to choose between the GMAT Focus edition and the current edition until the current version is retired in 2024.
In this video, we discuss the five main differences between the two versions, such as the number of sections, the removal of the AWA section, sentence correction questions, and geometry questions. We also talk about the impact of the new changes and how it affects test takers' chances of admission to a business school. If you're preparing for the GMAT, this video will help you make an informed decision about which version to take.

----
The GMAT Focus Edition is different from the current GMAT in seven main ways. Firstly, the GMAT Focus has three sections instead of four. The current GMAT has four sections: Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. The GMAT Focus edition has Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Data Insights or DI. Secondly, the AWA section, which has lost its importance, has been removed. Thirdly, the Verbal section will no longer have Sentence Correction Questions. Fourthly, the Quantitative section will only have Problem-Solving questions that require some knowledge of arithmetic and elementary algebra, but not Geometry questions. Fifthly, the test will take less time to complete since each of the three sections will take 45 minutes instead of the usual 75 minutes. Sixthly, the new section is designed to be shorter and more real-world-focused, which means it is focused on skills that truly matter. Finally, by eliminating hurdles like Sentence Correction and Geometry, the GMAT Focus allows test takers to concentrate on other areas and boost their overall performance.

Very Informative & Helpful! Thankyou so much, sir!
Just amazing how you explained everything with such simplicity. Thank you. 🙂
thank you for your kind words! @radiba9419
Excellent insights Arun .Very well explained!!
Glad you liked it!
What a perfect video. Thanks Sir for such a great explanation.
Thank you @Manpreet for your kind words.
Very nicely explained
As someone who has given CAT twice and scored 93-94 percentile both times, I think The GMAT Focus is better for me
Yes May be, though the tests are quite different but there are overlaps too
Excellent video, thanks for the useful infos. Do you know by chance when it will be possible to carry out the focus test?
Post August 29th is when they will start taking slots for the test.
Hey, how do the marks translate between both?
For example, if someone scores 650 in Gmat then how much that is going to translate in the focus edition?
Its motivating and encouraging to prepare and cream crack focus edition..
Has crackverbal prepared material for the focused edition.
Hi,
Thank you for the informative video.
Quick question - do any of the top b schools in US/UK prefer GMAT over GRE?
B schools accept both the scores. However most candidates prefer applying with their GMAT scores compared to GRE
I intend to apply to B schools in 2025-26. But I want to get done with my GMAT journey before mid of this year. Will I face any problems or bias whilst applying as most applicants at that time will be holding a GMAT score from the latest edition?
Interesting question - Eventually it’s a percentile scoring. You just need to focus on getting a higher percentile on the GMAT. New version or old that is what matters.
We need part 2 of this video
soon!
This is great prep video, I have GMAT in two weeks.
Good luck!! :)
Good luck
good
Hi, I need some advice on whether to take the focussed edition for my second attempt.
I have taken the GMAT and got a score below 650 and I am planning my second attempt before the round 1-2 deadline. My weakness is in the verbal section and SC and RC in particular, so do I take the focussed edition or not?
@Arka if you are planning to apply for Round 1, it might not be possible for you to take the Focus edition test before that. Though they are launching next month, the slots for taking the test might not be available till September. We have a GMAC meet end of this month. We will get more clarity with the exact dates. I suggest keeping it as a backup plan for Round 2. However, if your plan is Round 1, it might be a good idea to work on your current GMAT prep and improve. If you are below 650, we can help you analyse your chances of improvement. If you have your Enhanced Score Report (ESR) - you can share it with us here : crackverbal.com/gmat-esr-ppc/
I'm confused but from a gut feeling, the new format is for me! How to align my prep, that's the real-time challenge?
Starting early could be one piece of advice. It will give you time to plan and experiment on your study style.
@@Crackverbal_Prep Can you help me here? I'm an ordinary student but still aiming at 720-730 score band with practice.

I have decided to take the GMAT exam in the year 2025, but want to start preparing, now. But, now due to the focus edition news, should I keep preparing with the older version format or move to a new one. This is confusing. How can I align to one format for preparation?
@Amiksha - new version will release in Dec 2023 only. It’s better you prepare now with the old format. The score is valid for 5 years and at the same time it’s all about the percentile you get. If you get a higher percentile in the old format it will still hold same value for the B-school. A good score will still be a good score
Will the GMAT official site release some Mock test of Focused GMAT version? By doing this we will get a better understanding of the exam pattern before actually giving the exam
yes it should be there on MBA.com
I am planning to take the gmat test this year but join B-school after 2-3 years, so which version would be beneficial for me?
@shambhavi - if you are applying after 2-3 years our suggestion would be to take the GMAT Focus
I have taken self study plan from crackverbal and how do i prepare for this new focus edition
Hello Anuj, we will help you. We will be launching the focus edition content too.
Great video sir ! How many intakes are there for PGPX IIM and ISB one year MBA in India ? And Which mode will be suitable if planning to give the test in Jan 2024 …and starting now with the prep . Thanks in advance
Take the offline test of the new version if your plan is taking the GMAT in 2024. ISB and IIM one year program have one intake every year. However they have multiple rounds you can apply which starts in Sept. You can check this www.crackverbal.com/resources/isb-essay-analysis/. The new essays will be updated when the new deadlines are out.
@@Crackverbal_Prep Thank u sir
Sir
Will the iim and isb accept the new gmat focus edition for the intake in 2024
As of now ISB hasnt mentioned anything about not accepting GMAT focus scores. They just want a valid score. So if you are applying for R2 - GMAT focus edition might work. IIMs have only mentioned about not accepting ONLINE GMAT. They have not mentioned anything specific about GMAT Focus. So for now it will work.
Take the offline mode.
Whats suggested for someone who is totally new? Like someone who is planning to start the prep now! Gmat Focus edition has been released as well. What do u suggest ?
@khushbujain6071 - if you are planning to apply for the 2024 intake then the old format might be a good idea. The reason being GMAT focus slots are not open till November for you to take the test. This means taking the test in November or December you will be too close to the deadlines for the 2024 intake. However, if you are planning the year later that is joining the MBA program in 2025, preparing for the GMAT focus edition might be a good idea.
👏👏
I'm the one who is thinking about to start gmat preparation. Not yet started and targeting next year for B schools. So which gmat should i focus on?
If it’s for next year to apply, which is 2025 intake , start with GMAT Focus
Can someone clarify: is the GMAT official now deprecated? Is GMAT Focus the only option from now on? (March 2024)
Yes . the only version now available is the GMAT Focus Edition
If I am planning to give my GMAT exam in 2024 then can I take the GMAT older version or it is compulsory to take the newer version ?
There is no such compulsion. The B-schools are accepting both formats for the 2024 intake. However, you might be cutting too close with the deadlines if you wait to take the focus edition.
@@Crackverbal_Prep Could you please explain what you exactly mean with this argument? I mean you can also conduct the GMAT Focus Edition in an online format which can be done 24hours 7days per week. So why is the deadline a problem then?
when we can enroll for this new GMAT Focus edition Exams ?? any idea
Late August is what GMAC has announced. June first week they will announce the structure, content and other details
Hi sir, currently I am studying in IIT Kharagpur, planning to write gmat in few months but will go to the B school after 3-4 years, focus edition would be better for me right?
you have no other option. After Jan 31st focus edition is the only option for you
I am 34 rite now, will be 35 by the time i attempt exam. for my age is there any chance to get good IIM's if i score around 700-720
Yes its possible. There are quite a few applicants every year we work with ua-cam.com/video/B1EKlkSQEvU/v-deo.html
When will be the exam of gmat after August exam ... because it's too late to apply and when will i able to apply for gmat exam
GMAT can be booked anytime throughout the year. Yes it might be late to apply for Round 2 if you havent started preparing yet. The slots will be open to book by August 29th on mba.com
@@Crackverbal_Prep ohk sir thank you soo much 🙏☺️
Is it good for a 15 year experienced IT Sr Manager to pursue 1 year executive MBA?
Yes y not
I'm going to give gmat in 2024 .what pattern i should follow ?
Please reply
If you are planning for 2024 - pick the focus edition.
Glad SC is out, as a non native speaker, always felts SC is dumb
Yes - as said SC is more a requirement made redundant by AI writers we guess :)
Will there be negative marking?
GMAT follows a adaptive algorithm. So there is no negative marking but questions you see depends on your performance through out the test
it was a huge mistake removing AWA...😂😂😂
ALSO, the verbal time management will be stressed now that they reduced the number of Qs( aaaand focus on harder items)
FINALLY, the order of the sections actually matters now. Students should take their 10 min break before or after the verbal and make sure they split the Quant and Data sections to clear their mind in between.
That's an interesting take.
So regular version of gmat shall extinct in 2024?
No from Jan 31st 2024 - Only the GMAT Focus edition exists
So basically its CAT now. 😅
ha ha thats a good one!
Too scary
Not so scary! And we can help - you can contact us through the details in the description provided in the video
very well explained. thank you.
I am preparing for GMAT and so far at the end of SC, even after repeated study of SC, my performance in SC is not seem satisfactory. need your guidance, how to move forward.
