The DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw is a lightweight and compact saw designed for pro use all the way down to DIY. The size of the saw and blade makes it comfortable and easy to use, even for people who are new to wood saws.
The DEWALT Atomic 20V Circular Saw will be a popular saw due to its easy one-hand cutting on thinner materials. For small jobs or quick work, this saw is easy to get out, travel with and put away. It will not take the place of a traditional 7-1/4″ circular saw, but more as a supplement for smaller jobs and in tight spots where a standard circular saw won’t fit.
4-1/2" Circular Saw Design
When looking at the DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw from the side, you will note a few places the saw was designed to hold with a single hand. The trigger has a multi-level sort of “S” shape that allows for a forward or rearward grip, each having access to the trigger. This is ideal for tight places in a more professional application.
There is a secondary or auxiliary handle above the motor and just slightly to the rear of the blade. This is a great place to hold the saw with a second hand for precise cuts. We found the auxiliary handle comfortable for cutting sheet goods. The auxiliary handle is also removable if you need the saw for tight areas.
Height and bevel adjustments have a familiar feeling to a traditional circular saw. The Atomic Saw will bevel to 45º with a depth of cut of 1". You can adjust the stop at 90º with a Philips head screw for improved accuracy. At 90º you have a 1-1/2″ cutting capacity that will just cut 2x dimensional lumber. This saw will struggle to fully cut 2x lumber that is warped as we show in the video.
Finding 4-1/2″ Blades
The DEWALT Atomic 20V Brushless 4-1/2″ Circular Saw comes with a Carbide tipped 24-Tooth 4-1/2″ blade. This blade works well for rough cuts but leaves a lot to be desired when used for trim or siding. We have listed multiple blades above that will fit this saw and increase the cut quality. Unfortunately, if you purchase this in a big box store, you will most likely not find any blades to fit this saw in the store. we feel this will quickly change once more of these 4-1/2" saws become more popular with pro-grade brand names.
For now, we can look and find decent blades on Amazon.

Hey Brian. Thanks for the review. I've been using this saw on a near daily basis as a professional remodeler / contractor and although it does have a few minor quirks on occasion such as the vac adapter & allen key for blade changes needing to be better secured or stored separately to avoid losing. I've found it to be an incredibly versatile tool to have on the job site. I refer to it as my trim saw & it is perfect for flooring rips & fitment cuts. It's quick, lightweight & easy to use for accurate cuts in a multitude of materials. It's pretty much, my go to circ. saw on most of our remodeling projects. it takes care of about 80-90% of the tasks we use a circular saw for every week. It performs well and is a quicker & easier to alternative to my DCS577 Flexvolt for most applications, especially for the less experienced guys. Plus, you just can't beat the accuracy & great line of sight you get from using a blade-left saw.
Couple of tips- for best performance when cutting any kind of wood, I use the DIablo 4 3/8" 36T Carbide finish blade. Super fast & pristine cuts, with Zero Tearout (night & day difference to stock blade).
#2. You can actually get Turbo Diamond blades with 3/8" arbor or use an adapter from amazon etc. (3/8-5/8"). WIth the right diamond blade, it is actually capable of performing clean (dry) cuts in tile, Quartz or even 2cm stone on occasion.
#3. The factory blade or 60T HSS blades will also work well for cutting the newer types of shower waterproofing panels, kerdi, schluter, Wedi Etc. Even Cement backer board on occasion with the 60T.
Thanks for all your hard work, honest reviews & fantastic content!! Especially your dedication to producing high quality, entertaining & informative content right now, with such limited resources. It's most appreciated!!👍👍👍
Keep up the great work, you just earned another subscriber!
Great comment that I am going to pin to the top! Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I have this saw and really like it ... what's bothering me that the blades options are more expensive than the blades of 7 1/4 size... did you manage to find cheaper blades than home depot
you should make a video of you using it with the different blades I will watch it.. cool
Such an incredible comment on so many levels! Really truly, thank you for helping out!
@@estoylisto yes. U can usually order a 2 pack on Amazon for the price of 1 at HD
I am a contractor and I use this on a daily basis for framing, sheet8ng and even finish carpentry. I just did some cuts on stained oak 3/4" trim, taped it with masking tape and had a perfectly smooth finish cut. I used the blade it came with, no issues. 🙏🏻😁
I always wanted one of these and recently a guy on a remodeling job I was doing had one and I finally got a chance to use one , I really liked it , its great for doing some quick cuts especially were space is limited and it's so lightweight I can take it with me everywhere I think I might need a saw , I immediately when out and bought myself one , right now H.D. has them on sale for $99 and that's a great price for this tool , they don't go on sale too often , so I'd suggest getting down there and buying yourself one ....11/12/21
I found this video extremely helpful and purchased this item due to your video review. The reason I bought this for my husband was to help him with a picked fence. The farm doesn't have available outlets so the batteries are a plus. Thank you for dropping all those jewels on the description below. Thank you even I can understand how to use this tool.
Been a plumbing apprentice for a year now and bought one of these because we cut lumber for backing all the time. A sawzall was too much work and inaccurate. A normal circle saw seemed overkill. This was the perfect middle. Perfect for pocket cuts and patching holes in floors. Tool is awesome.
I could not possibly agree more with this comment
I’m getting one now. I really like the slim compactness when I have smaller projects and I don’t want to haul around my circ saw.
I bought this 4 1/2 inch saw on a whim. I did not not need a another saw, but what the heck! Wow, what a great saw! It is my go to saw for most of my sheet goods and cut off needs. A great little beast of a saw.
Brian, I am a dewalt man, just baught a dewalt circular cordless saw and a planer, also have the saw in your video. Love your demo. I own a UPS store in Austin and build crates for customers and boy I tell you these tools have made my life easy and more than half the time with the corded tools. Thanks
Nice, what part of Austin. I'm here in South Austin just bought this saw.
I didnt need it, but I bought this saw to have a new gadget. I love it! It is always in my truck right next to my Dewalt 60 volt 7 1/4". The only downsides are yes, loosing the allen tool, wish it would cut just 1/8" deeper, the screws leaves gowges in the rip guide, and its left handed. Not a fan of left handed, but on occasion that characteristic comes in handy. Besides for that, I love it. Its rips fantastically, lets me get into tighter spaces, and actually has a bit of power for its size.
I've really appreciated your reviews. Dewalt forced me out of my favorite 18v tools.
3 days of shopping and watching your revenues saved me $ and mistakes.
I rounded up 11 miscellaneous 20v Dewalt tools and
4 batteries and free $90

I purchased this saw on June 27th 2024, as a kit. I read the manual and came across the the dust collection section, turns out that the manual reads that the kit comes with a dust collector bag. I called Dewalt and, sure enough, they mailed me out a bag to use with this particular saw. If you purchase the kit version be sure to read your manual to see if it says that a dust bag should be supplied....🤗🤗🤗
Mine didn't come with the bag, I had to buy it. Manual only states it comes with the vacuum attachment - bag sold separately
probably the best 'cordless' saw for flooring and trim work. perfect sight of line...and they should call this saw a "recircular" saw, its like a circular saw with a reciprocating saw grip.
These little circular saws are actually very handy. Making a quick cut or two is easy. I find it to be less intimating than a 7 1/4" saw so it would be good for those people that are timid with larger tools.
This little dewalt saw it a beast at frameing demo! I got one and it gets into some tight spaces. Good purchase
Actually, I wasn't surprised that the dust collection port operated well.
With the vacuum on, the port is held in place by suction.
If there was a manual lock on it, and someone tripped over the vacuum hose, it could pull the saw from the operator's hand and cut them.
That's the reason Apple created MAGLOCK for their laptops.
MagSafe*
I own the rear handle makita and milwaukee and the dewalt 578 but as a DIY’er i keep myself going for this little dewalt saw for most around the houst things. I used this saw to build basic rectangular planters and it did amazing.
I love how this saw dumps sawdust away from me. Very important since I use this usually in awkward positions or tighter quarters, so dust kicking up in my face would suck. Love this thing. Done so much more than I thought it would. If I did have one wish with this, the shoe could be a be improved on . The rolled steel sometimes would ride up on guides or rulers I use as a guide, where as your typical saws will butt up on it nicely.
I'm a Carpenter , I bought that saw about 18 months ago and I Love it , its great for small framing jobs and it's small enough to fit in my rolling bag so I always have it with me , Awesome Saw , Well Built , Buy One .....👍🖖
Hi, I just bought one and it wont cut all the way through a 4by2. Each time I try it is two mil short the shoe is all the way down . Can you tell me is the wood slightly thicker here in Ireland. Its treated 4by2. Thanks
@@BlindGuy39yes, metric lumber is slightly different dimension
LOVE THIS SAW ESPECIALLY after adding Rockler's DUST RIGHT FLEXIPORT DUST CANISTER. Only wished it had a light
quevas93 almost forgot I bought one the Flexiports a while back... Thanks for the reminder
I just got my DeWalt DCS571B. I bought a Power Stack battery to go with it. It assembled together very easily. It runs fine on my standard 1.5 ah batteries, some I have had for ten years it has cut everything that I have asked it to cut with ease. I don’t think it needs anything but the entry level batteries for most jobs. I am not a journeyman carpenter but I occasionally demand a lot from my tools, often outside their normal abilities- just ask my 20 odd Stihl chainsaws.😊
Good information like your presentation no stupid shouting ❤️from England 🏴
Just tried it with a dust bag and it worked surprisingly well
What dust bag did you use?
@@WorkshopAddict I used one with a spring clip instead of a pipe
I’ve had mine for six months and have loved it, I just wish it had a LED light.
May I ask, why? You do a lot of wood work in the dark? In Florida we have noise ordinances until 7:00am you start cranking up power tools in a residential before that time, police are gonna shut your job down before it even begins.
@@iitzDiRTY at the shop I work at sometimes we're in a confined space where little to no light hits. Maybe that? Idk I got used to my tools having a light haha. My DeWalt multi tool has a light it does come in handy.
Great video! My dust collector bag on my Dewalt DSW780 12 inch miter saw fits perfectly.
I own the 7 1/4 flexvolt version but I find that I mostly use it for breaking down sheet goods and the occasional cutting of 2-by lumber. I mainly got this because I can never get used to the blade being on the right side. No one can explain to me why it's beneficial to have the blade on the right yet all "worm-drive" version are on the left.
This is a jobsite tool, and a great one at that. It's all about weight. It will still cut through a warped two-by-four you just have to adjust the depth. This is a game-changer for certain projects especially building houses.
Hi Brian,
This is a cool cordless trim saw.
It would have worked great on a exterior window project i was working on. I had to cut the bevel siding that butt up to the window frame. Then i added 1 x 4 casing around the windows. Also some of the windows were in the second story. At the time i purchased a Dremel corded trim saw with a 3 1/2 inch blade. The problem with the dremel was i had to have a extension cord and stretch to second story.
This DeWalt cordless would work great for those types of projects. Now i would put a solid cap around the dust extractor so it can come out from the bottom of the blade guard. Don't really need a vacuum working outside or working two story high, LOL...
I might look into this tool. Also at home depot they do carry the diablo blades for this saw. For some reason they place them on the corner of the tool rack. I quess it's small enough to stack and people to see them.
Thanks for the video
Was thinking of getting one of these for drywall sure that'd be a good use for it
Love this saw especially for siding.
Awesome review Brian, great job as always. I can see this saw for alot of different uses as well!!
Nice review, Brian. I've had that saw for about a month now and it's become my go to saw. I use a ryobi dust collection bag and the dust gets stuck at the 90 degree bend. So, I'm going to 3D print an adapter that comes straight out and I think that will solve the problem. Be well.
if you flip the blade upside down (in reverse) you can cut siding using the friction
Great channel 👍🇺🇸, the saw has its place. Framing, remodeling, no. Siding, flooring , light diy, yes....
I just picked this thing up because I need a saw in my reciprocating wasn't doing the job for the 2x4 again plywood.. this thing saved the Day! I picked it up for $100 at Home Depot because for some reason they had a $99 sticker on it on the floor but the system was ringing up at 1:50... I snatched it up and wanted to get two. As good as this thing worked I wish I would have.
Clean cuts through the 2x4s and plywood. I could use it one handed and did not have one issue. The 5 amp hour battery already had lasted the entire job today
This is what I need it for, I got recip saws for days but need a more accurate cut on 2x4s I’m building furniture. I already have power stack & xr batteries for dewalt so I’m gonna grab this since I’m working in tight space in the garage.
Love this saw just bought use for flooring
As a painter i F-ing wish all joiners/carpenters spent more money on dust collection. in the uk im still yet to see someone on site with one!!
It’s perfect to cut away siding to make room for trim on new window install
The ruler that came with it, how do you use it? Also, battery types that were used in this demonstration, links?
I cut 2 slots in the part of the dust adaptor that attaches to the saw. Put a hose clamp on it. It isn't ever going to move
Is it more secure and convenient to handle than the regular 7.5?
You shouldn't need a special adapter or DeWalt vacuum/extractor for dust collection with tools that use the Quick Connector so long as your shop vac hose is 1-1/4". Remove the nub from the end of the hose, pick up the DeWalt DWV9000 and thread it on to the bare end of that hose. I've done that with the old hose from a scrapped shop vac and now have two hoses for my working shop vac - one for regular use and one for DeWalt dust collection.
I bought this saw with a fiber cement blade for better control of those finishing cuts for siding.
that is what I was thinking, no chipping.
I do a lot of roofing and taking a big saw on a roof is a pain , love love love my little saw. Won't trade it fir anything.. Waiting for xmas to see if i can get another one on sale for a backup just in case.!!!
Its on sale at Home Depot -- Black friday sale $99 til I think 12/2
I think if you cut the sheet goods on foam board you might get better collection. The friction fit could probably be improved with electrical tape. I would like to see if someone could get this hooked up to a rigid vacuum as that seems to be the standard on job sites in my area.
Hey Brian. Is a nice tool for a light cutting. I have the corded Rockwell that looks like the dewalt. The problem I found is that the blade life is too short and the price higher than 7 1/4 blade.
Thanks so much!...I bought the saw based on your video review...
Hope you enjoy it!
Im in the uk, i own this dcs 571 pair it with 5ah xr, and i use the dust bag of my evolution mitre saw 😂, fits purrfectly, good review
Thank you for this! I’m sold!
Nice in depth review with good testing..👍👍
Neet your using a fob on your wrist to turn the vacuum on
I have this saw and love it does what i need it to do right tool right job thanks Brian great show
Thanks guys love to see the tools i buy do well in your reviews
Love your vids! Thank you!
Great video! Might grab this little guy for decking to increase mobility
I think you would enjoy it for decking!
WorkshopAddict yeah I saw the little belt clip and I like how thin the head is from blade to back. I like using a circular saw for my post notches to keep them straighter then clean it up with jigsaw so I think this would be awesome. Using the 391 and I like it but it’s still too big to lug around without a hand on it. How did you find the belt clip to be?
@@AjGalloway95 I am not a belt clip guy, so I cannot help you with if it would be good or bad. Sorry.
Austin Galloway don’t notch your posts, horrible idea.

WHICH DEWALT WOULD YOU USE FOR SMALL BRANCHES
I purchased an ATOMIC 20V MAX Cordless Brushless 4-1/2 in. Circular Saw (Tool Only) but had to return it immediately since the trigger switch does not keep the blade running, it shuts off automatically when pressing the fully pressing the trigger even when not cutting anything. Even the second saw I got when returning the first one that did not work, even the second one did not work. Had to return it also.
Do you think that the compact saw would be able to cut through a bamboo countertop? Or a regular particle-board style countertop? I want to try to cut down a bigger piece of counter for my very small laundry room myself. I currently only have a mitre/chop saw, and a jigsaw, neither of which would be useful to cut wood counter with. But I was thinking of buying this tool if I can use it to cut the counters. And for future projects of course! Let me know what you think?
Says in the manual that this is only for wood or fiber cement. Not to be used for metal, plastic, concrete, masonry or wet tile. Is this so or can it be used for drywall, thin metal skirting?
Wish you used the 8ah for the long cut on the sheet of plywood. I find it interesting that the 5ah and the 8ah have a difference in power even though they are both 20v batts.
You can watch our drill battery test video and it will show the voltage levels that each battery could hold, from 2ah and up. IMHO, this is a great saw with a 5Ah battery and might be with an 8. But if I need an 8Ah battery for this saw for power, I would pull out my 6-1/2".
Hey Jimmy, just thought I'd say that the reason higher capacity batteries deliver more power (when fully charged) is because when you drive current out of a battery, there is an associated voltage drop that occurs (Ohms law). The bigger the battery, the less significant that voltage drop is, assuming the current delivered is the same. So you maintain a higher voltage, and thus a higher power. Theoretically, with enough amp hours in your battery, that voltage drop becomes negligible.
If you're lightly using the tool, it could pull more current from the battery to make up for the voltage drop, thus keeping your power constant. However, if you're maxing out the tool performance, and it has hit the max current it is designed to pull, any voltage drop that occurs will lower your power. That's where the big batteries help: on high demand activities. On light use, you may not notice a difference. Hope that helps!
Would this tool be any good for thin metal like electrical trunking don't like using a grinder
Is there a bag with it ??
Don't care for DeWalt but this saw I like that it has the blade on the left side you can see the blade awesome
That lock on attachment for the vacuum is neet what is the dewalt wet dry vac model number
Am I the only one who finds the"ringing" of the blade satisfying
Yes
What is the cool watch you’re wearing that shuts off vac?
Not a watch. That is the bluetooth switch that comes with the Dewalt vac.
Try a zip tie around the nozzle not to tight or cut a zip tie in half insert it into nozzle port then push it onto the saw nozzle secure it in place to where it won't move at all.
Small amount of epoxy has been put around the dust shoot and sanded to make them fit a touch tighter.
I need some help on the blades here as now i'm totally confused. I bought this one linked above ►Rockwell 4-1/2-Inch 60T Circular Saw Blade: as it has 60 teeth and 40-80 teeth is what everyone says your supposed to use on finish wood...I put this thing on and it cuts significantly worse than the 24 tooth that came with it on finish grade pine. What am i missing here? are all 60 tooth blades different? Am i not supposed to be using that specific rockwell blade on wood?
The main reason people would want to watch a video like this is because it should show how the too works in tight spaces. If you're going to cut on a bench then a full sized circular saw is cheaper and works better.
Gr8 handy lil saw -missing light -biggest con for me and belt clip too delicate
can i use this as an angle grinder if i ever need to?
How does it do cutting pressure treated 2x?
what is that remote power gadget for the vac...that stole the show..
Own a manufactured home with floors being OSB, found that cutting the floors with a regular circular saw is hard when trying to get as close to the wall as you can. This looks like my ticket, just wish makita made one in their 18v line being I am already invested in that line
I'm with you! Here's hoping
Are you marking a guide lines for long distance cutting? Does it has a guide rod?
Self tapping screw in the extractor part. Looks a nice little saw.
Screw will block a portion of the exhaust... Slit the plastic and put it on with the zip tie
Nice video ..👍 Do you think you could squeeze a 5" blade on there ??
I think that would be a great panel or plywood saw mainly like a rip saw
Good full review
Can it cut metal?
Interested to know more about the DeWalt dust collection system you were using. Maybe I missed a previous video.
I used it on concrete before as it is a HEPA vac. ua-cam.com/video/iq66CC0XJG0/v-deo.html
Hello, bro. Would you tell me what is that screw located at the front of the tool used for?
Does it come with a rip fence?
I just bought one and I’m looking for a blade to cut porcelain tiles. What blade do you recommend and from where? Thanks
Hi does the duct port adaptor allow us to hook up small dust bags ie - miter saw bags? Also what type of 2x4 wood did you use for the demo?
I want one because it's black and yellow but struggling to think of anything to use it for
Its one of those things that if you have it you will be surprised how much you use it. But you have to cut wood or have the need for using the saw on flooring or something... :)
You convinced me, I'm getting it lol, abit like the multi tool until you get one you think how did I live without it 👍
Same🤣
I had picked this saw up awhile ago and its a nice saw, but it is not really small or that light. With the battery on it makes it quite long.
Would you test it cutting PT lattice?
Can you cut French Cleats? Deciding if this or a full size Circular Saw. Thanks
Can it cut 2x4 hard wood with a single cut?
Instead of a friction fit hole for the Allen wrench, mold a clip onto the handle body so that the Allen wrench shaft can snap into it. This is not hard to figure out. Ever wonder why companies ignore the obvious and quite easy and cheap improvements to their products?
Wow that saw was very quick!
Havent used my wormdrive for a while. Wish it had a magnesium base tho.
Hi guys, just got this saw today and it will not cut all the way through a treated 4by2.. its about 2mm short. Is this normal or is the wood here in Ireland slightly thicker? Hope you can help as I really like the saw but that is the main reason I bought it
Great review .thank you
Would it be suitable for cutting up pallets
It works well for cutting the slats!
@WorkshopAddict thank you for your reply. For a DIY person like myself which tool will be easier and safer to use this one or a full size circular saw ?
@joej9247 IMHO, a nice 6-1/2" circ saw is easier to use. The long handle on this saw could be problematic if there was kickback or if you put you other hand in a bad place. Small circ saws seem to keep you closer to the tool and more aware by nature. If you are right handed, get a blade left saw.
@@WorkshopAddict thank you very much
99 bucks with a 5 hour battery, 3 hour battery and charger. I could probably take advantage of these promos and trade up to a new F-150 in a couple years lol. Matter of fact, I think Im going to take this on as a side project, see how many extras I have and start trading up. Start selling a couple batteries and charger new, then a couple bags, maybe a back pack. An extra drill here and there. I just want to see how far I can take this as a project.
Is there a word to describe which side of the saw the blade is on?
I just got this saw from Amazon after Prime sale (the price dropped by $50 from $149 to $99! Which what I was hoping from Home Depot Father's Day sale but they didn't have this saw at HD.). Now I am looking for the plywood blade. In your recommendation, you put Porter Cable saw but it looks like the blade direction is the opposite of Dewalt's. Is it possible or even safe to flip the blade to match the Dewalt saw rotation? Thanks.
Where i can buy it online ?
What is the name of the dust collection remote control?
Excellent review!
