Third actually. The first for her explosive, acting masterclass in The Exorcist, and the third for her heartbreaking, a performance for the ages in Requiem For A Dream.
She is really an underrated actress. She still has that charm that she had as Mrs. McNeil in The Exorcist. That scene in the film where she is walking to her home after a film shoot and the Tubular Bells theme starts playing is still among the best scenes in the history of horror movies.
Not underrated. In movie land she is a living legend. Had she been British, she would have been a Dame three times over. If you check out IMDB you see she did many fims and TV series. But I think she was always quite picky in her role choices. You never saw her in The Towering Inferno and that kind of superficial blockbusters in which ancient stars were dregged up for sentiment. Just saw that Ellen is scheduled for an Exorcist 2023 sequel. Wow. As Regan's mother again, but I suppose it's a cameo. She certainly treasures the first Exorcist. A wonder woman. And yes, in this interview she looks fabulous. Four years shy of 90. Go, girl!
She's not underrated at all. She has won an Oscar, been nominated many times, and has quite repertoire of screen and stage work and is regarded as one of the great actresses of our time. She is semi retired now, but still works
This woman is one of the most gracious actors to ever decorate the screen. She is a true gift. I have always been enthralled with the way she speaks. And her performance in this film is one of the most powerful and consistent ever committed to celluloid. A brilliant human being.
My grandmother and I on a cinema trip together saw Ellen in The Spitfire Grill. So that became Ellen's most special performance for me. I look forward to seeing her in The Exorcist: Believer.
*Billy Friedkin is one of my All time favorite film makers...if i´m correct, The Exorcist was nEver a horror movie to hIm..nor is it to me..i stIll find it the weirdest thing that a `horror´ movie was nominated for TEN Oscars?*
As an actress portraying the horrors of seeing their child being possessed by Satan, she was indeed magnificent. Seeing her finally reprise the iconic role for The Exorcist: Believer is a great honor for The Exorcist's 50th Anniversary.
Ellen along with Louise Fletcher are both ridiculously underrated! Ellen was still criminally robbed from winning the Oscar for Requiem For a Dream! Hard film to watch, but her performance was unforgettable!
The fact that she did a lot of research into spirit possession, says alot for her as an actress. In her role as a mother who was not only non- religious, but also completely ignorant on the subject of demonic possession- she was so convincing!
@@jm7804 I suspect Freidkin would confess PART guilt on this. Come on people "things happen". Do you think if she could have a spinal cord ready for the Olympics now that she'd give him the part *BACK?!?!?!?* (no pun intended)
The Exorcist is the if not one of the most important films in cinema history. It was a moment and time that really broke bounds for horror that hadn't been done since Frankenstein. Bless Ellen, she gave one the best performances to.
She's one of the very few performers that I enjoy watching, as in how she acts. She was robbed of the Oscar that year when voters decided instead to give it to Glenda Jackson for "A Touch of Class." Not a classy decision at all.
BOO on everyone here saying Glenda Jackson in A Touch of Class was a worthy winner, when her win is in fact the worst of that decade for leading actress performances. If Ellen had won she'd be ranked way higher, plus Glenda had just won the same award a few years prior.
"My dear friend Billy Friedkin is a maniac. And....I love him, but he's a maniac!" - Ellen Burstyn, from Fear Of God: 25 Years Of The Exorcist documentary 😂
Two incredibly talented people above, and just a superb cast. So you had 3 important pieces----A+ source material, A+ cast, A+ director. Well, nothing guarantees success in the movie business, but I bet Mr Friedkin would agree, that's not a bad hand to start your poker game with. And the setting around DC and New York probably didn't hurt either. Some of the architecture and just the "mood". Even the track Karras runs around as Kinderman waits to talk to him, it just has a certain "air" that lends itself to the whole film. It would be hard to capture these emotions today, not impossible but hard. "Sixth Sense" had a certain magic to it, but even that film is probably viewed as "ancient" to many now. What gifts some of these artists give us in our lives, to "escape the mundane".
I so wish that I had the reserve energy to be there last night, but my middle aged body said, "Sorry Dude. You don't have the patience to sit on the 5 freeway after teaching all day." I hope to meet Mr. Friedkin and Ms. Burstyn one day.
Até hoje não acredito que a academia de Hollywood, não tenha dado a Ellen o Oscar de melhor atriz por sua incrível atuação em "O Exorcista".Não me conformo.
Ellen Burstyn was excellent in this movie. Audrey Hepburn was the original choice for this character. She was a great actress too, but it's hard to imagine her in this role. I'm not certain she could have conveyed the raw pain, fear and frustrated anger as effectively as Ellen Burstyn.
Anne Bancroft was also considered for the role, but either turned it down, or wasn't available. Jane Fonda was asked to play it, but she flatly refused, saying (and I quote), "Why would I want to be involved in this capitalist, ripoff piece of shit"?!
Great actress, I watch the Exorcist just for her acting alone....and Requiem for a Dream, man she deserved that oscar.....so many people have stopped watching the Oscars including myself, when it was given to Eric's sister that year....
Interesting to note, the boy that the movie “the exorcist” was based on was protestant, After the exorcism and he was freed from diabolical possession, he and his parents converted to the Catholic faith. Ellen’s rejection of the Catholic faith doesn’t follow unless she just rejects the concept of diabolical possession and she was just playing a role that had no spiritual or theological significance for her.
Ellen Burstyn joined The Sufi Order of The West years ago and is a very spiritual person. My Aunt belongs to the same Sufi order and is spiritual too. My Aunt has seen Ellen Burstyn at a Sufi retreat one time.

Yeah so true. Ellen was a beautiful lady back then. Her acting in Exorcist is incredible. Not a false note. Those reactions as she opens the bedroom door are scarier than what she sees.
An extraordinary beauty, and under-appreciated actress. Requiem for a Dream should have been her 2nd Oscar.
Third actually. The first for her explosive, acting masterclass in The Exorcist, and the third for her heartbreaking, a performance for the ages in Requiem For A Dream.
Wow! My thoughts exactly.
Hmm she may have won just one oscar, but I dont think she is under appreciated..she is highly respected and deservedly so.

I think I’m in love with Ellen Burstyn! She’s such a beautiful human being! What a delight to watch!
So no hard feelings after Friedkin almost broke her back during shooting! Nice.
That's exactly what I thought as well. She has stated in many interviews that he was personally responsible for her life-long back problems.
