Ah Curzon, the man with the magic hands... a wonderful display of bravura and musicianship. All played long before I was born. I feel privileged to have experienced this concert through You tube.
Grazie mille
I've never seen anyone look at the ensemble as much as Curzon!I can't believe this exists ! 1966 !He actually looks at the musicians he is playing with no matter the diff what he is playing see 19:31 left hand bass and later when passage repeats his left hand jumps to the E5 in quiet passage never looking. How anyone gets through the 1st mov and then has to deal with the exacerbating difficulties in 2nd mov .I'll never know this and Bartok2 are the scariest things I know of !At exactly 23:00 comes one of the most difficult octave passages in all 19th century music -played as securely and musically as ever ! Maestro Curzon I noticed in the scherzo with all its leaps never looks at the keyboard no matter where is phrase has too start . I know this score so when at Brahms sounds like a Prussian military Kaiser here like his 2nd Sonata as opposed to no.3 The arpeggi in 1st mov are never clear but the ff fullhanded fast chordal wrist work and all of his phrasing feels meaningful but it's an impossibly fast ,forward 1st movement . Sokolov takes fast tempi in this .I'd love to hear Furtwangler or Celibedache or Klemperer in this . Forceful ,well imagined reading but one really needs to be an expert to know what is happening out of the obvious with musicians at this level . Did Solomon play either concerti I wonder .I know Hess recorded this and played the d minor with many conductors odd pairing her with Toscanini ! Many believe his Liszt Sonata to be the most thinking and he has the most communicative technique . I didn't even know he played the huge Brahms ' concerti but to see their is a televised record of him is just too wonderful ! The Italian radio orchestra .I must find Curzon's complete discography .
There are 2 extant recordings of this with Klemperer conducting. One is from 1954 the other from 1968. The 1953 is with Geza Anda and is on UA-cam. The 1968 is with Vladimir Ashkenazy. Both are very good performances.
There are recordings of Solomon in both concerti, including several of the D minor. Of this, the studio recording with Kubelik is the best known and the most thoroughly prepared, between conductor and soloist. The most interesting document, though, is a live D minor with Jochum and the Berlin Philharmonic, where Jochum has his own ideas, including about tempo, but Solomon's playing imposes order in his unique way. The B flat studio performance with Dobrowen is a classic.
@@andrewkennaugh1065 Curzon was a very sensitive, nervous sort from what I have read. Not like say, the genial and sometimes nonchalant Rubinstein who didn't seem to be bothered by the recording light going on.
Some conductor famously said Curzon was a " walking disaster". Naturally a bit high strung and accident prone, but when in a good mood, he was delightful. Check out his interview with Norman Pelegrini. HILARIOUS and revealing.
Such a pleasure to hear (and see) Curzon playing this concerto with such freedom and command. Also humour, in the finale. It was not long after this that I heard him in a broadcast of this work where everything got on top of him and it was obvious that not many concerto performances lay ahead. This seems to have been a sweet spot in his career, when he had his nerves under control and his technique was still at its best. Earlier, his recordings show him too often rather prosaic, although fluent., Later, he achieved a simplicity in a few works that was memorable, but by that time he had put away the Brahms.

Grazie mille 🙏🤩👍
A relaxed and genial Curzon. He sounds so inhibited in many of his studio recordings. Thanks for posting this.
drh8h He is bound to feel inhibited within the confines of a studio...😚

Here Curzon's Liszt Sonata he is not the same man it seems in Brahms or his unparalleled Mozart !

I wish the camera angles had captured Curzon's facial expression. Everything played across his face. He was transported when he performed!
Wow. Thanks for uploading this gem
Simply wonderful!
Stupendo reperto.
thanks for the upload. Curzon is simply great.
Thank you! Such a great pianist!
Radio RAI Tre did re-broadcast this concert in 2008. It was dated as 'Registrato il 28 novembre 1966'.
