In April 1986, Bergamo (Italy), Jorge Bolet was due to play a Liszt concerto with Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI di Torino under Rudolf Barshai. But there seems to have been an orchestra strike (details?) The Italian newspaper l'Unità, 17 April 1986 reports: 'In Bergamo, Bolet saves the evening without the RAI orchestra. The people of Bergamo crowded the Donizetti Theatre and generously welcomed the Cuban pianist Jorge Bolet. No First Concerto (of Liszt) and no Totentanz, but in their place a panorama of Liszt's solo pianism of the central period between 1840 and 1850, approximately, [including Bénédiction de Dieu]. 'L’interprete possiede una splendida tecnica ma non la sfoggia, preferendo rilevare l’eleganza della scrittura e la delicata poesia delle pagine dove il musicista ripiega in se stesso. Il Liszt diabolico, presente nella sonata dantesca, rimane un po’ sullo sfondo, lasciando in primo piano il Liszt meditativo o addirittura salottiero.' "The interpreter has a splendid technique, but he does not show off, preferring to highlight the elegance of the writing and the delicate poetry of the pages where the musician retreats into himself. Hough at the peak of his abilities - truly a marvel to behold.

Hard to tell whether Bolet here is deliberately adopting an over-spacious tempo or is simply slower technically than he once he was. It's a fairly labored, sometimes even sloppy performance. Maybe he plays over-spaciously to mask his inability to play with the requisite vigor. When he was younger this was not a problem for him.

Maurizio Pollini has also played this masterpiece with Claudio Abbado. See the recording DG. They both left us, Claudio Abbado on the 20th of January 2014 and Maurizio Pollini last 23rd of March 2024 first day of Spring. Robin Gibb sang I have been crying....

I don't know why orchestras are afraid to play this with full expression, the slow movement is so exquisite, not plain at all.

Pogorelich is one of my favourite pianists - ahh that usual crystal clear sound, minimal use of pedals and of course the cyclone-like tempo!!! Well, I came here literally searching "pogorelich prokofiev 3", knowing how angry Martha Argerich (who also happens to have perhaps the most famous rendition of prokofiev 3) was when the jury threw him out of the Chopin competition(even I was equally disappointed ngl) and oh boy, Argerich is yet again proved right - he IS a musical genius❤‍🔥👑💪🎶🎹

Un Gran Maestro. Uno de los mejores pianistas del Siglo XX. Dotado de una técnica muy depurada: perfectisima y exquisita. Recuerdo muy bien su Scarlatti, su Mozart, Schumann... y aquellos memorables Scriabin y Rachmaninoff, reminiscentes en sus manos de aquel San Petesburgo de la Rusia Imperial, como el idioma Ruso que hablaba, el propio de los aristócratas de aquella época. Y por supuesto, era un gran especialista en Chopin, cuya Obra integral tocó en muchas ocasiones. Recuerdo especialmente un memorable recital Chopin en Santander, en presencia de su querida Nela Rubinstein. Era para mi, junto a Alfred Cortot, Arturo Rubinstein y Alexander Brailowsky uno de los más grandes intérpretes del compositor polaco. Una figura de otra época, que conocí en el ámbito familiar y me trae bellos recuerdos... todavía no perdidos.
