The realistic train whistle brought back memories of listening to the trains leaving the marshaling yards at the back of our house when I was about 5 or 6. My brother and I would listen to the steam engines at bed time and it was a rather mournful sound almost as if the engines were lamenting their fate as the diesels made them obsolete.
Very nice locomotive. A great addition to your collection! NYC had some beautiful locomotives. Great review video. Thanks for letting us experience it with you.
I have a Niagara too the LCCA (Lionel Collectors Club of America) NYC VisionLine Niagara with the road number of 6019 and its one of my favorite engines.
Ive been watching Erics reviews for quite a while and I thought he had to have a script or something. I happened to catch him shooting a video on his webcam last night and after watch him shoot the video, I have a new level of respect for the patience and effort he puts into his videos. He truly does a great job! Keep the videos coming Eric!
Hey Eric, you did not mention the wheel slippage effect. It was not in the manual, but there are at least 2 other UA-camrs that have posted a video on it so I haven't bothered to post one. From a stand still, dial up the throttle a bit, but keep the break leaver all the way down. Slide the break leaver all way up quickly and you will hear the wheel slippage. Your engine will also take off quick, so there is a fine line between the throttle being up too far, and down to low. It takes a little practice, but it is fun.
AWESOME review Eric! While I love everything about O-gauge model railroading it's the Vision Line that really keeps the hobby exciting! Love it! Thanks bud!
I just have to note/find funny. They got so many details right, so many cool features, and somehow. They got the whistle wrong. The Niagara’s did not wear the 6 chimes the Hudson’s and Mohawks wore. They wore Hancock 3 chime long bells similar to that of the UP whistles. Not the make or break feature but still noticeable.
Surprised you didn't go for the grey version. Fantastic review of an equally fantastic model - I think this is one of Lionel's best personally! Looks right at home on your amazing layout!
Eric; I normally won't leave a commet on your reviews but I am still in the process of being blown away. Thank you for, as always, a great review and roll-by's.
Great engine and review! Th only thing I would have liked to see is some HEAVY smoke pouring from that stack. Lionel's sounds and detailed look of the vision engines really are incredible, and for a big steam locomotive with big sounds, the thick smoke just completes the package for me.
So I had a question I recently bought the MTH Union Pacific Diesel Freight Set and the voice lines for it kinda sounded like you by any chance did you happen to voice it?
Thanks for an interesting review of another one of my favorite steam locomotives. If I may further enhance your history portion the Niagaras were the next design level after fitting 2 L4b Mohawks (3144 & 3148) with Timken roller bearing rods and enhancing their tenders with a cistern behind the coal slope sheet and a highly modified water scoop for more efficient high speed water pickup. You have the last NYC L4b Mohawk cab no. 3149 in your collection. Even the L4b's had reached their maximum performance and Paul Kiefer's Niagara became the pen ultimate 4-8-4 ever built. Lionel has done a good job replicating the engine though I would prefer to see a less garish silver graphite on the smokebox. Lionel neglected to model the Automatic Train Stop shoe which fastened underneath the rear journal on the tender swing truck on the engineers side. This also resulted in the first overflow pipe being eliminated due to its spray icing up the shoe during wintertime running. The safety pop off valve ( not poppet valve) steam effect is well done as is the whistle steam effect. However, the tender overflow effect just doesn't cut it in my opinion. But, each to their own. Your new Niagara would look great pulling your streamlined Empire State Express passenger train. Thanks again for all your hard work and I am looking forward to your next review.
I can't tell you how long I've been waiting for you to do a review on this engine great video in my opinion the best feature would probably be the water scoop steam effect but that's just my opinion I hope you get the next remake of the j3a Hudson that's also to have new features
Very nice review. I purchased a #6013 and it is spectacular. Eric, a lot of us don’t have a large layout like you, please do another video of this engine running like they did at about 100mph. Although I bought one I cannot do it justice on my small loop of track. In the 50’s these Niagara’s were used on the Empire State express. Maybe you can use your Empire State cars........
@ERIC's TRAINS - WOULD be so kind as to do a SIDE BY SIDE COMPARISON on the FEATURES & DETAILS between the: MTH 4-8-4 NY Central Niagara vs the LIONEL Vision Line Niagara (I can't decide which one to buy)
Eric do you use the scented smoke fluid? I’ve been using sugar cookie fluid and it smells good the coffee that I have now and it makes the trains smell like coffee
Honestly, i'm not to sur how it work but i would be suprise if it was close with electrical cigatte. The electrical cigatte eat up the liquid like the model train. Since there are now a lot of scent with E-cigarette, i wouln't be supprise if some scent have made their way to model railroading smoke.
Having a visual effect to simulate the water scoop picking up water from a water trough is great. But it shouldn't have been done with smoke, it doesn't look realistic and it's too gimmicky that only drives up the price. If anything, Lionel should've put a flickering blue light under the tender to simulate the water scoop effect that way. Smoke lingers and its apparent in this video. Water is more discrete where it sprays then it attaches itself to a solid object.
Hey eric.Do you let your steamers pull long freihht trains? I have had my steamers pull 35 to 43 cars.Lionel did a good job on this.I had one oo these in HO.And this steamer did have a horn and whistle. This locomotive had 6000 hp very powerful locomotive.
Just saying, the coupler force effect has been around for years in the realm of DCC. Back EMF (Back Electromotive Force) is an automatic function of the decoder to sense how hard the locomotive is working by monitoring the electrical loads on the decoder. Depending on what it senses it will play the appropriate sounds for a locomotive running light, pulling a long heavy train up a steep grade, and everything in-between.
Hey Eric’s I got Model Bachmann Ho Scale of Niagara 4-8-4 same number of 6005 he got two heads light right now it very jump think got snow cotton stuck somewhere still work?
very nice steamer/ the rail line that they ran on. New York to Chicago ran through Southern Ontario. Better known as the CASO ( Canada Southern ) line. whish happens to be the rail line i am trying to model. with the highlight of the layout being the St Thomas rail yard and station ( model is over 5 feet long ) engine shed, turn table and transfer table.
It'd be nice of Lionel was still doing H.O. versions..... I picked up a DCC H.O. Challenger that came with all the bells and whistles (ha ha) that was sold by Lionel back in 2007. Except for the lack of a smoke unit (which could be installed at an additional cost) I'm pretty happy with it. My thought was that it would be a scream if Lionel got back into the H.O. game with something like this Niagara.
19:55 That “water” should really help those flowers grow so they are healthy and beautiful for a long time lol
Wow, that is a beautiful model steam locomotive! It's this kind of attention to detail that keeps me loyal to O-gauge trains despite their high cost.
Looks great Eric, The water scoop spray effect was pretty neat.
always a great feeling seeing a new vid come up on my notifications!
They shouldn’t have scrapped all the Niagara and Hudson locomotives
At least we're getting that NYC Hudson replica.
@@FutureRailProductions they did not get a nuf mony
@@jimmy6039 You're kidding? Well that sucks.
There's what is left of a tender from a Hudson up at steamtown... it was converted to a steam generator car though.
I hope that one day they can find the plans for the niagara and the Hudson so new working ones can be built by fans.
Wow! What a beautiful engine. LIONEL sure did a good job with it. Thank you for sharing.

I wasn't super excited about this engine until I watched your review. That's an amazing model! Great job Eric!
Niagaras are my favorite NYC locomotive
I prefer mohawks
For me it's 3 way tie between the Niagra, the Dreyfuss streallined Hudson, and the A2 class Berkshire.@@thegamingrhino5864
I also like the niagaras
Why is the frickin Niagara your fave out of all the locos of the NYC.

That water scoop spray effect is amazing:)
When I was down in Atlanta for training with Norfolk Southern I stopped at legacy station and got a demo of this engine. Beautiful piece.
Great Loco thinking of getting one soon
This thing just looks beautiful gliding down the tracks
Very informative review of the model and the real train itself, great!!!

I Love the Niagara! It's my All Time Favorite Steam Locomotive in the New York Central System!
Thanks Eric another great video ! I love how you run engines and cars from different eras on your layout.
Hands-down the best Lionel steam locomotive. Thanks for the review.
I'm not in this hobby at all,but I can't wait for new video. Seriously cool model.

The whistle is a Southern Pacific 4449 back when it had a 6 chime

Gorgeous engine. Looks right, sounds right. Thank you. 👍👍😎
Beautiful loco and massive
Awesome locomotive and nice review the poppet valves and water scope steam are amazing and it has a nice whistle
Poppet?
you need to film it along with the Dreyfuss Hudson at the same time
One word....... AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great review & operation video.
I know these are not cheap but this is one of the best iconic engines with the best features for the money!
Beautiful locomotive and like always awesome video Eric
I had a mental seizure when I heard the price, but that's just me
Always enjoy watching your videos, can't wait for the next one.....
Love the Bell on it
And the horn is cool too
This is really cool. I like it a lot.

Great video as always!
Awesome review of an Awesome engine!
Excellent! Thanks Eric.. :)
Great video Eric.
Eric, are two of the rear drivers on this lovely locomotive without a flange for making tighter curves on smaller layouts? jus' askin'? thanks. Arthur
Eric do you use the scented smoke fluid? I’ve been using sugar cookie fluid and it smells good the coffee that I have now and it makes the trains smell like coffee
Aiden’s Trainz wait, they can have scents, WHAT!?
Denzil Fraser yeah they do currently I’m running the coffee bean scent in my trains

I love this train

That bell is perfect
Love the weathered rolling stock
I agree they look so good didn’t Eric do an amazing job!
Hello Eric, will the Niagara make a 048 inch radius at all?
Hey eric just wanted to say hi and hopefully you have a great weekend.

Wish I could afford one but this a hell of a nice model.
The 4-8-4 is my favorite type of steam locomotive.
Why exactly were the Niagaras equipped with a horn and a whistle? Or any steam locomotive that has both, for that matter?
Does your friend bill brennen for the ballast company happen to be a middle school principal on Long Island? I know it’s a weird question.
The hudson and Niagara those engines are awsome
gotta love em
I love the Niagara in any scale
Hey Eric’s I got Model Bachmann Ho Scale of Niagara 4-8-4 same number of 6005 he got two heads light right now it very jump think got snow cotton stuck somewhere still work?
Man My grandfather worked
With those specific NYC engines
