Good video! You use the double nucs for honey production like I do.

Thanks! Yeah I like that setup as I get older. I started with all deeps 13 years ago, and those 95 lb deep supers are really heavy.

Hi im new to beekeeping. I notice you have holes on the front of all your supers. I've rig is a 3 box and the only entrance is at the bottom of the hives. Should I drill holes like yours???

  • @charissarubey-thecountryro9043

Also, what is that plastic sheet you peeled off of the top super?

How do you keep grass trimmed around the hive? I'm worried about getting stung

At around 15:55, is that a swarm cell that they're trying to make?

  • @charissarubey-thecountryro9043

I see you have exit holes in the front of your supers, is this on both sides? I am in western TN, is this something that I should do as well?

Hi, New to the hobby but not new to picking up bees in need.
Debating a spring honey harvest to ensure the bees survive the winter.. what's your thoughts to it?
First swarm catch about 3 weeks ago and abouts to do a brood check...2 stings taken

Thanks so much for the great question. I would think that a swarm will need all the resources they can get to build up and survive through the winter. Besides taking the honey in the spring when they need it to build up to their maximum population, would you also take their wax and destroy the comb to get the honey? If so, that comb also takes a lot of resources to create. The bee scientists say every pound of wax takes about 8 lbs of honey to produce. So I would build them up to a large hive and take some honey next season. If they don't survive than you can take it all next spring.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting on the video!

@@DougtheBeeGuy no worries enjoyed the video and when you said about harvest times I thought it would make more sense in the spring from the remaining stock pile.
Can't say I intend to take any honey, wouldn't mind trying but for me it's more about relocating swarms from the estate to a friends apiary... He likes to leave them to it... Has one hive that even tho had frames, they went all over...
Another had bubble bees move in after the honey bee winter fail.. and again a swarm of honeys have taken it back over.
Fancy making a skep this summer, just for the skills I'd have to learn..... And for the daughters giggles at me putting hands in cow poo lol

Wow making a skep sounds like fun! We usually buy them for decoration and have them until they rot away. I've never put bees in one though. There are some pretty cool videos of keepers still using skeps on UA-cam.
