gameplay wise, yeah because it's impossible for Mario to run through the loops. Lore wise, Mario would win in a fight. And he very obviously wins in sales

He can survive going at light speeds, and is durable enough to touch a star and survive, He can also survive the equivalent of a nuke. Sonic only has speed on his side, and his super sonic form. But all of those feats were Mario without any power ups

Its like he was trying to make a point by saying Sonic bosses are more difficult than Mario bosses...even though they are both extremely easy bosses. XD
The point is that Sonic has more attack dynamics than Mario.
But that's a pretty bad example of a boss, you have to jump on him anyway, only real difference (aside from controls) is the life difference Mario and Sonic have.

+Internally Screaming Uh last time I checked, Sonic cannot run over water and some Mario levels are quite long so jumping across wouldn't work either.
+Fruit Platter You underestimate him. In Sonic Colors, you can use his boost power to make him go across the water for bonus rings. In Sonic Rush Adventure, one of the first levels, if he or Blaze goes fast enough, they can sort of run across. Also, in certain Mario levels there's usually a huge chunk of rocks too tall for Mario to jump on, at least from the ones I've seen. Sonic can jump high enough to reach it if he builds momentum.

There’s a ton of platforms that mario can easily jump on way before this loop. He can use them to go over the loop and even the tunnel section after that, meaning he can clear this stage without a bit of speed at all!
