This episode reminds me of the Mark Twain quote - “The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him; he does the thing he ought not to do; and often it catches the expert out and ends him on the spot.”

If ANY Batman: The Animated Series episode premise could make a great movie (90-110 minutes and...let's say...$125 million budget), this one is it. The opening, then Sid getting passed along for 5-10 minute scenes with every major Batman villain or Batman side character you can think of before the finale. Let's say...Riddler, Freeze, Joker, Ivy, Catwoman, Spoiler, Two-Face, Alfred, Ra's and, finally, Jim Gordon framed by the confession to a straight crime boss type. Director? You probably DON'T get David Fincher out of bed for a straight Batman movie. But if you asked him to make THIS movie? He MIGHT savour that challenge.

One of the moments not mentioned that really surprise me as a kid, Was right after joker realizes that not only is Batman might actually be gone but that there’s no spark to committing crimes without him. Harley shows up happily wearing tons of jewelry wanting to show off for the joker,
he actually tells her to just put it all back.
There’s actually a Batman comic where are the joker thinks he actually succeeded in killing Batman, and Batman is gone for months so he’s sure he actually succeeded in the surprising thing is, he becomes sane. He makes himself look like a normal guy and starts acting like it. Even coming to the point of considering settling down and getting married. But when he finds a newspaper that announces the Batman is back he slips back into his old self.

    • @defgirzawa7583

I love this comic, too :)
There is also "Dark Knight Returns", were Batman was gone for 10 years and there is this mental patient who was just a living plant basically.
When Batman returned and it was announced in the news, he started living again and it becomes clear that he is the Joker, starting to live up again.
      "B... B... B... Batman! Daaaarling~" I absolutely love that line :)
It shows how much the Joker depends on Batman^^

    • @DSan-kl2yc

It's actually a 4 issue arc. Going Sane I think with different issues have some water theme title. I've read it.
But he doesn't go sane. He takes pills for it. This is similar to what white knight does.
But it's a dangerously bad idea to act like that is the jokers motive. Because it just isn't.
He's also just a criminal. And he's also a crazed killer. He does both regardless of Batman.
Joker had bother killed and stolen without regard to Batman.

_”Without Batman crime has no punchline.”_
Mark Hamill has stated several times that that is probably his favourite line he’s ever said as the Joker.
I agree with him. The amount of pure emotion on display from the Joker in this episode, without him being in the typical sort of ‘crazy’ mode he’s usually in, is really something. Seeing that uncertainty of the situation slowly devolve into the joy and happiness being sucked out of the Joker’s life when he realises (or thinks, in this case) that it’s true, and Batman doesn’t turn up, he’s too depressed to even completely go through with the crime he just committed, telling everyone to put their loot back.
God I’d love to see Mark in the booth for this episode. A lot of the special features show him standing and really acting with his body in front of the mic to bring the Joker out, but how different it must’ve been to see for this episode when he had to bring out a sad Joker for the first time.

I find it funny that Joker planned to kill Sid the Squid in an acid bath at Ace Chemicals given that later on, he tried to do the same with Jack Ryder, and all that did was turn him into a yellow skinned Freakazoid expy. I like imagine that, had the acid actually gotten to Sid, Joker would've inadvertently created a bigger threat than a simple "gunsel" who got lucky eliminating the Dark Knigjt.

I love how the joke about Sidney's character is that, While everyone believed that he was a tough guy because it looked like he killed Batman. In actuality Sidney was just a weak, Spineless, Bumbling coward who couldn't harm a fly, Let alone murder a man.
And that's honestly a good thing, Because it shows that while Sid may have wanted to be a mafia big shot, He's actually a good man.

You could take Joker's attitude a couple of ways. My take is that he actually does want to kill Batman, but he wants to do it his own way: something dramatic, grandiose, and "funny." The idea that someone else beat him to it, and that someone was a "mound of diseased hyena filth who's not fit to lick the dirt from my spats!"
Then again, Joker is crazy enough that you can imagine him being 100% sincere both times.

For me, the most oddly poignant line from the Joker isn't the one about crime not having a punchline without Batman. It was the moment before, when he said: 'Only this time - thanks to YOU - I have this horrible feeling that he's.... really not coming.' The pause and inflection of those last three words carries the Joker's realization that something he'd come to rely and depend on may actually be gone forever. Which was more of a loss to him spiritually than any trouncing he got from Batman himself.

Perfect mix of tension and comedy in one batch. When people usually talk about Batman TAS, usually focus on how mature it was and this element become more important after the Schumacher movies. But this episode tastes like written by Sir Terry Pratchett himself. Seeing the whole serious noir stories from the point of view of a bystander who comically survives regardless of all odds may a sound like a parody. But this is why so hilarious!

For some reason my favorite moment in this episode is during the barfight when somebody decides if they take out Sid, they pretty much took out Batman. The bartender just watches on as if it's a normal Tuesday but when one of the patrons gets knocked against his barfront he casually nudges a glass that failed to fall so it smashes on the poor schmucks head. The bartender then looks ever so slightly happier!

There is a Fanfic on Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity called Bruce has a problem, there is a lot going on in it, but pertinent to this episode, is what the fic does with Sid. In the world of the fic, Sid parleyed his rep from the end into starting a buisness after he served his time- a credit union among other things. He responded to the woes various thugs and henchmen had, because while their bosses either didn't care, or had the money to deal with it, a thug with no insurance has a huge problem when they get roughed up enough. So he provides insurance and other services to ex-cons and people of similarly poor legal standing, An untapped market of people who don't have access to money laundering like their bosses, but do end up with windfalls, and always need financial help. Sid used his rep from both sides of the criminal underworld, the rogues for his messing with Joker, and the mobs for messing with Thorne, and provided service to and gained even more respect from both sides. He even has a little revenge by refusing to accept the joker's buisness, the clown's goons only get by because Harley covers for them- like in the BTAS episode when Harley and Ivy team up and Joker's operation suffers.
Sids a minor character in the story but it is one of the little things the writers of the fic included to flesh out their version of Batman's adventures, picking and choosing their favorite elements accross the media to fit. It even has story relevance later on.

I think this episode is the best showcase for the joker. It shows without a doubt his motivations in wanting batman in his life to chase him. He doesn't care about money or crime, he wants someone to chase him as an equal or better. This is something they largely dropped the ball with in the batman and robin episodes later, where they made the joker care about money more than anything else.
