Growing in Bosco's Boots | Documentary (2024)

- Here is a little documentary film we made chronicling the creation of our no dig permaculture homestead, market garden and food forest in Kilkenny, Ireland. Over 4 years, we transformed an empty field into a garden, including wildlife ponds for nurturing a balance of biodiversity; A garden ecosystem that we came to find integral to growing healthy plants and truly organic food. We set up a farm shop that surged in popularity over the years and we even began supplying local restaurants with our amazing vegetables grown in living soil.
This is our story. A tale of growth. A film and a dream, many years in the making. A dedication to my brother, Bosco, and our garden which we named in his memory. A testament to the utility and satisfaction of gardening/farming with nature. I hope you enjoy it.

Wow. What an amazing journey. I love that it's a family affair and named in the memory of your brother. May God continue to bless your family.
Thank you! :)
My plant journey of what this beautiful documentary is all about, started a very long time ago it seams. that was at 7 years old and now I am 77.
We moved to a small, actually post logging boom shrinking town. I spent hours and days in the magic untouched woods a couple houses down. I did organic and permaculture things that I found out the importance and reality of for many years, college and life.
So I am so touched by this I actually shed tears of releif and joy.
Thanks for making me, the spirit, happy.
Tony
Hi Tony, thanks a lot for this heartfelt comment. It means a great deal and I'm glad our story moved you. ~Shane
Absolutely amazing project. Love it. You finding yourself on your journey reminded me of a quote -
“The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops but the cultivation and perfection of human beings”
Masanobu Fukuoka
Greetings from Nova Scotia, Canada. I loved the film. I am on a similar journey, albeit later in life. We bought a 22 acre hay farm 2.5 years ago, and have begun to convert the property to fruit, nuts an veggies using permaculture principals. I am hoping to put more time into the farm as i prepare for retirement. Finally, I've found my joy, my purpose and love for the soil.
Ahh i loved that mate ..you've uncovered the secret that all long time gardeners feel. " When your garden comes to life , you too will come to life ! "
Cheers! Glad you liked it. It is so simple yet so powerful a thing...
Hi Shane and Kay (Bosco's Garden), I was inspired 10 years ago when I stumbled on Joel Salatin on UA-cam, trying to learn how to take of 2 Muscovy ducks that was gifted to me on my 50th birthday. I love regenerative farming and am about to start my own operation in UPSTATE NY. Your film has taken my my inspiration to a whole level. It's great to see that what you are doing is possible. I will keep you posted, and I will continue to watch your videos. Thanks.
Heya, that's awesome. All the best with the endeavour and look forward to seeing how it goes.
Beautiful film. Such a wonderful journey and such beautiful results! You were so fortunate to have access to land, and the land was so fortunate to have you care for it❤.
Thank you very much!
I admire what you all did in 4 years. Your garden is so beautiful. God Bless you and your family 🌸 from Australia
That was a beautiful masterpiece! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you!
And what a great film it is. Well done. I just loved how you conveyed the importance of energy conservation and distribution.
Thanks Odhran!
So in blocks C and D you didn't use cardboard? Just the plastic tarp over winter and compost and wood chips in early spring? Did you broadfork them first.
@odhrancrowe3894 yeah, it was there from June until January. I used a little bit of cardboard where the plastic didn't stretch to. I didn't broadfork at all, but I did in the polytunnel since it had been extremely compacted after I let the donkeys into the spot where we placed it in the winter of 21/22, when it was wet and after it had been tilled. I didn’t broadfork anywhere else. I don't even own a proper one. I just used a regular garden fork in the manner of a broadfork; lifting the soil but not turning it.
Very interesting. I'm actually in a situation at the moment where I need to extend, expand, ASAP alot of garden beds. There is everything in this project from tarped out sections which I will approach as you have said. I had planned to broad fork these areas but I think now once compost has broken down ill just put it on and plant out autumn plants direct. Other areas are making me nauseous, last years tilled beds.... running down hill🤪 all kinda native plants in different succession of reclaiming the land. Such a mess. But seen the video of you opening up those new areas so fast has helped me regain focus. I'll just have to work with the trapped out areas and forget about the out of control shaped beds till the new-year. I'm going to have to for go cardboard on this project but will have the means to apply the full 15cm or even more.
As for in tunnels I think because of the unnatural setting and interaction of the whole situation I think we just have to broadfork to get things established. I would love to experiment with not broadforking I think if one were to carry out a winter regime of watering on empty beds at a scale to match the rain I think by the following year the soil may have become decompact. But left to the desert style environment a polytunnel is I think a once off forking without turning is nessery for all tunnels.
@@odhrancrowe3894 I actually can't wait to visit ye again and see what you've been getting up to. 🤣
This garden needs children! Thank you for this beautiful film 😎
Well done, young man. Thankful to have had the chance to watch your story.

That was a sore one.. 😅 I spent the rest if the evening with an ice bag on my head.
Absolutely loved your documentary!! Definitely a magnificent garden/ecosystem that Bosco would be (IS) proud of. Really made me quite emotional 🥲 Follow your dream.

Somethings. All things, perhaps. Need to be experienced to be believed. Experienced in order for us to grow

Bravo. Job well done. 😍
Terrific documentary showing hard work and also a lot of fun with amazing results. Bosco's around all the time and would be so proud of all your endeavours. You show that dreams can come true if you really want them to.
Thanks, mam.
Hey Shane! Wonderful video. Thank you. I enjoy feeling connected, something that this world is all about, yet nowadays disconnects. Your message connects, your passion and truth, I can resonate and vibrate with that. I hope to continue learning your story and absorbing your passion.
By the way, I changed my channel name, it’s back to Aums Acre. Aum meaning constant state of vibration in which everything creates. Acre, because we’ve converted our entire acre to wildlife and growing food.
☮️ Aum Breath
Thanks buddy! Good name... Wishing you peace in your acre 🕉✌️
a beautiful tribute
What an amazing story and video. I am so happy for you and your family. I am starting something similar and all I can pray for is that I end up like you. Looks like I have found happiness. I still have a lot to go but I stop every day to look what I accomplished. As I end the day I go to see the sunset in the ocean to give thanks to God for another day that I got to live and fall asleep to hopefully wake up and or it all over again. God bless you !
Simply beatiful, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching!

thank you for sharing this!
Thanks for watching!
This was amazing to watch! I stumbled across your video looking for pond info and I'm so invested in your journey after watching this! Well done! I have a question on your spreadsheet - love how organized you are. Do you have a sample of that somewhere?
Hey! That's awesome. Thank you! I don't have them handy at the moment, but we will be doing some bed planning soon, and I was thinking about making a video explaining that process.
Absolutely amazing documentary! Well done. One question, did you try growing potatoes in the No dig set up?
Thanks! Yeah, no dig is great for potatoes. You need to top them up with a good amount of compost, at least once though. Very important or a lot of them will pop out and turn green. Good for preventing frost damage on early spuds too.
You could also try doing them with straw, away from your beds of greens, since slugs won't eat potatoes. I did that years ago, and it worked pretty well.
I was wondering how you did the wildflower garden in the front yard, did you just throw out seeds into the existing grass? Such a lovely life you have built for you and your family in your brother's memory.❤
No seeds. All those flowers were already part of the lawn. We just let them grow. Most lawns will be like that unless they've been heavily sprayed or fertilised.
Awesome video!!!
Thanks Rowan! :)
Great job. I am trying something similar in New Mexico to feed families.
Thanks! All the best with it!
hi i love your garden and how it support your need and your neighbors..i am looking forward to doing the same to our land..just a question, why are u not planting trees like huge trees for shades, fruit-bearing and all? just curious
We have lots of trees planted. They are all still quite small though.
Perfect ❤❤❤❤
