Yes I got my 7yr son a nintendo switch for Xmas and he loves playing terraria with me so I got it for him on the switch and was sad there wasn't 1.4 at first but so cool it came out fairly quick after we got it! Fun and great. Curios to see how 2 players can play together locally
As a Switch player, I can confirm that Terraria isn’t that bad on Switch, but the controls were definitely a big negative for me. It took me about 20-30 minutes to completely figure out what controls I wanted to use, but it doesn’t lag, and it does great overall on Switch. If you have a Switch, are a Terraria fan, and haven’t already, I’d suggest getting it!
I can confirm that it doesn't _suck._ Not at all! ...but god, the stuff added for summoner post-v1.4 is almost a requirement for me. Vanilla summoner was basically reborn with all the small bits of content and rebalancing!
Believe it or not, terraria on the switch is absolutely awesome! I’ve noticed some things though, a lot of people have these things that me and a friend call **personal bugs** because they literally only happen on one specific person’s switch. And this can be super random. Specifically for me, I have an issue for when *SPECIFICALLY I* host worlds, background elements like Balloons, Zeplins, Birds and background enemies don’t show up. But when I play single player, or join other people’s worlds, they are just fine. Weird, right? Another one of the bugs I’ve heard of are NPCs just deciding not to sell stuff, it’s super funky, But aside all from that, I’m just happy Journey’s End is Finally on Switch.
I was having bugs with backgrounds too but i wasn't hosting. Rain would stop on hosts end but not mine. Also changes to mannequins weren't updating on my end so i accidentally placed items on top of costumes and deleted them. Occasionally my game would freeze and i'd have to close software. I guess these are the reasons they wanted to delay release so they should be patched quickly!
I've only ever had Terraria on Switch, and 1.4 is absolutely amazing! There are so many bug patches and the game feels so much smoother. I've also been able to enjoy slower progression more, with pylons making building towns, exploring, and fishing a lot more interesting. One feature I've been really looking forward to was block swap and I'm glad it's finally here, I felt like I couldn't build at all before without it. I haven't fought any of the new bosses yet but I'll get there!
I play on Xbox and I like the DR version a lot but I think a few features from the Pipeworks version should've stayed the same like the inventory. I prefer the PC inventory over the Mobile one. That might just be me though Obviously some of the features like the reforging or crafting menu is very useful and I love that but I think they should've made it a pc UI with some overhauls like they did for mobile
Whenever a game has a lot of customization options for UI and Controls and stuff like that, I love it. It might turn some people off, but I really prefer the ability to change things I don't like. I usually look at the options for a game before I play it anyway.
Yeah, the advanced control scheme is so much better, I do recommend changing it a bit from there if something is still annoying but honestly advanced is just so much better.
James could we please get a full series of you on switch? You’re my favorite and kinda only terraria UA-camr I watch and any time I get stuck or can’t decide what to do next I watch your videos for advice and since I’m away from home I can only play on my switch. Pleaseeeee make a full run on switch.
I started terraria on Wii u back with orcram and once I got my switch terraria.was one of the first games I got. And know that I've finally got a taste of 1.4. it's gotta be up there with some of my favorite games
i like 1.4 for switch, we finaly got splitscreen and the zenith something i noticed is that the moonlord got a debuff or they just made the terrarian stronger. when i started playing on switch, i have played on 3ds, xbox360 and One but the switch is now way better, you can just play everywhere
6:12 Ironically, the Mobile version had something that was nearly similar back in 1.2, when the inventory would takeover the entire screen. But for 1.3 they changed it on the mobile version to what you're seeing now
I agree, new controls are over complicated - I thought I was the only one who feels like this. As a person who played mostly on PC, the console version was pretty good back in the days of 1.2 i think, but when 1.4 came out, I felt like I was handicapped - even simple actions took me quite some time perform. Combat and movement are very good, lock on system is a great addition, but inventory management, building etc are not the best
Problems I have had: 1. When playing on a large world, going to specifically the right ocean the entire console will crash and the the terraria save data is lost. 2. When split screen, the second player is immune to any and all projectiles. 3. At random times chests can't open.
Yo the Right side ocean crashing your game also happened to me and so did the left ocean for some reason I couldn't get the goodies of the ocean for a while until a update happened
For me thats a bit sad they removed advanced camera movement from PS Vita, its when camera moved slightly forward when character moved to the right or the left, it worked like an additional parallax, and i loved it, maybe they removed it because of some items like sand storm in a bottle, because character spinning fast, and it would make camera moving fast right and left and back which is gonna be weird, but still, i wanna see this feature like an option, it can be off by default, and also it would be cool to make custom intensiveness of the camera sway
There is NO good reason why you can't map the L/R buttons how you want anymore. The shortcuts that they added can be remapped to not use the L/R buttons, but you can't make the L/R buttons do anything else. This really REALLY soured my experience since I had been using L for Auto Select and R for Grapple. When you're using your left thumb to move and your right thumb to aim you NEED to be able to do certain things without using the face buttons. Scrolling through your hotbar is NOT one of those things. I feel like I can't play early game (when I rely on my grapple for mobility) on Switch anymore because of this. Another HUGE downgrade is that we used to be able to use grid snap cursor immediately by hitting any direction on the d-pad. This feature is just gone. Now you have to switch to grid cursor first before you can start snapping tile by tile. If you're using L3 will often put your cursor off-center from your character meaning that you have to then find and recenter your cursor before you can interact with the specific tile right next to you. Building directly from inventory is absolutely fantastic and the content of the 1.4 update itself is great, but honestly I think it's a downgrade overall. Great update ruined by small issues that have no reason to exist in the first place.
I downloaded terraria for the switch right before 1.4 came out and i’ve pretty much switched over (no pun intended) to only playing on my switch. Also i totally agree with you about wanting to play the game at a slower pace. I used to play on Xbox and try to get through the game as quickly as possible but now i actually take things slower and it makes for in my opinion a better overall experience. The controls are really weird though, and kinda tricky to map out, but i mapped them to what the controls were for Xbox and they’ve been fine ever since.
7:49 YESSSS! PLEASE! I NEED THIS! I've gotten Terraria on Steam recently, now that I own a PC, and I would really like to be able to play my Switch worlds on PC. I know I could still play them on the Switch itself, but like, once you go to playing keyboard and mouse with Terraria, you can never go back.
The biggest change I had been absolutely DYING FOR in the switch 1.4 was that you can now finally move while the inventory is open, all be it you can’t jump from what I know so far. Also you were spot on with the whole controls issue. But I find that once you change some bindings around it becomes really easy. The fact you can have a whole other set of bindings if you are holding L or R and that made it so much easier for me to navigate the game.
things that i saw were: going to the end of world (left or right) and looking at the minimap, looking at the minimap whilst walking, where flinxfurr? and no DST crossover
I honestly want to get into this game. It looks really cool and I love stardew valley, but there's something very confusing about the layout with everything. Can't figure out what buttons do what and it just isn't as straightforward as I feel like it should be for having to use a controller
I bought the switch version when 1.4 dropped and played it non stop with my brother and managed to beat moon Lord and get the terraprisma in about a week
5:30 not handheld only. Happens in docked too. Really hurts the building out of inventory, but it's a sacrifice I'm okay with for now tbh... I'm sure they'll fix it too, so .. yeah..
One bug I have encountered a couple times while playing Terraria 1.4 on the Switch was that I would be switching the positions of some items in my inventory during combat and one of the items would completely disappear; this usually happened when my inventory was almost full. Strangely, both times that this bug happened it made my magic mirror disappear.
It think it sucks that you no longer can move while using an item in the inventory, which you were able to do in 1.3 with pressing R. Also it’s annoying that you have to hold an item to quick trash it, instead of just pressing Y.
I have just recently started grinding again on switch terraria to get the terraprisma, celestial starboard, etc…as it’s what I play the most on and it’s really fun. I don’t have much beef with it other than the controls like you mentioned. But I got around that by making custom controls which I like much more.
I play handheld most of the time and my joy cons slipe off easily when ever that happens a big screen comes up and I can’t control until I reconnect my joy cons.
My first time getting Terraria for my belated birthday present for my switch was awesome back in 2020. Didn't know how to properly play Terraria during 2020, and my cousin forced me to get Terraria for ps4 during winter break of 2020. Just got pc Terraria last year during August. Played it all the time on my iMac and even beat pre-hard mode for the first time while on my iMac. Got a gaming pc and forgot to cloud save. Never played Terraria that much after that due to how bad my world spawns were (literally almost no caves nearby in almost every PC world I gotten) until last week. Gotten back into the game and currently have the game paused as of writing this comment. Thinking about making another nintendo switch world for me to play it on. Great game regardless of platform. But PC is easier for me due to the easier controls.
Thanks Chippy for this specific video. I love Terraria on the Switch and even more so with the new update. I even prefer the Switch version because I can take my Switch everywhere and play it. I know the controls aren't the easiest but you just have to get used to it. Other than that this game is a blast!
I was so happy to get 1.4 for switch since I loved 1.4 on pc but I wish they had the classic controls as an option since I need to learn a new control set now
I haven't been in the terraria bubble for almost a year because I only have a switch to play on, and wasn't feeling the 1.4 hype obviously, but I beat the game I got for Christmas and decided to boot it back up just a few days ago and was absolutely amazed to see the update.
I'm glad 1.4 is finally here for switch, but when the game updates, it resets your controls to the game devs preferred setup. This wouldn't normally bother me so much, but if you want to change the controls, it's really hard to know what's what and what you might need with the new update. It's just really frustrating. It took me about an hour to figure out what I needed and what to switch. Other than that, 10/10
Challenge: defeat every boss in a unique way, just like you used explosive bunnies on the wall of flesh but this time theres a twist. You cannot use the same method twice on different bosses, so if you use explosive bunnies on like king slime then you cant do it on any other boss except king slime. Also you cant use any weapons besides these "unique ways", idk what boundaries to put since i havent completed terraria myself yet, but surely an expert such as yourself can figure it out for me.
I'm a Switch player and I definitely cam tell you that the controls stuck onto me even when I played other games besides Terraria. It is the complete opposite of Minecraft for Switch, which has lag, chunks not loading, and is essentially hell.
2:00 That is exactly what i love about usin a switch for any game that lets you use touch and controllers. I so often find myself just tappin the screen to do somethin bcuz its much faster than navigatin the controls and cuz its rite there in front of me. Its instinctual even, so i end up doing it even when the touch screen doesnt do anythin for the game im playin xD So many games are improved by this tiny Quality of Life feature that makes it so much easier to navigate menus and to place objects in the exact rite spot and so much more.
First time playing this game, started pretty much a few days after the update went live and a few hours ago defeated the WoF. Hardmode is really twisting my soul and I'm like an ant running around looking for the new ores after I broke the alters. Also doesn't help that my main map is that unique drunk world because i thought it would be a great idea to have both the crimson and corruption. Now to deal with the hollow that spawned in the jungle...
I haven't finished watching this video. But I would love to try this out with Game Trials (26th Jan to 1st Feb) before I consider getting. This is also a shout out if anyone wants to try it for free* before buying. *Nintendo Switch Online Membership Required.
One thing i noticed when i first tried switch 1.4 on expert mode was for some reason i got swarmed with gnomes the spawn rate was crazy i didnt even know that gnomes were a thing
I would have to agree with everything you said in this video, I’ve been playing a lot recently and I loved the experience, really my only problem was my controls got messed up, but I’ve got used to them. Other than that it’s really good in my opinion
That's been a thing for ages though, hasn't it? I'm pretty sure it's existed since probably 1.2 or earlier, it's not exactly a new feature Edit: wait you meant on switch version I am actually stupid
I downloaded and played it like 1-2 years ago, and couldn't accomplish anything at the bottom of the world near the lava pits. The freezes were CONSTANT. Has that been fixed on switch?
The latest patch add mouse and keyboard support to handheld mode. I'm getting both for the switch, how well does the game play with those enhancements? (Also, what kind of mouse would you recommend?)
For some reason when you play master mode on any console version the game doesnt give you an extra 6th accesory when you start. Im trying to complete hardcore master mode on console and this bug makes it harder.
@@sunlightskz in terraria the crafting bench and furnace all work by entering your inventory and crafting near it. All you have to do is be near it so put your bench beside the furnace
Am I the only one who went straight to my all sword chest and immediately crafted the Zenith as soon as it launch on switch.. Other than that 1.4 is so amazing for the switch, UI was a huge change for me.
I’m been having hardest time getting use to the switch controls. I’ve been playing this game since it came on psvita. I need to rearrange everything on switch to vita controls. I wish vita port had the 1.4 updates 😢. Oh, the iOS version…haven’t touch it or the backbone that often so. Yea
Alright idk if this is happening to anyone else but it is to me and i hate it. when doing split screen, second player will be immune to all projectile attacks. it gets to the point where if youre playing split screen multiplayer, bosses such as the moon lord are a cake walk for second player. (but not first)
The craziest thing to me is how well the game runs, especially with how bad it could be in 1.3 on the switch at times. The world loading and saving times have been reduced to mere seconds, alongside with the fact that almost all bugs were fixed Really happy with this update, was worth the wait.
watched this video already, but Im watching it again while playing on my switch. I have hundreds of hours on pc but picked up Terraria for 12 bucks on switch today
Have you checked out Terraria on Switch yet?
Yes and its really good! I'm so happy with the work they did on this update. I love it!
@@Basti2004YT i agree, do you have horsemans blade?

This wouldn't normally bother me so much, but if you want to change the controls, it's really hard to know what's what and what you might need with the new update. It's just really frustrating. It took me about an hour to figure out what I needed and what to switch. Other than that, 10/10
The controls changing was a pain, game is good new stuff is good and Yes... DOG PETTING
Its instinctual even, so i end up doing it even when the touch screen doesnt do anythin for the game im playin xD
So many games are improved by this tiny Quality of Life feature that makes it so much easier to navigate menus and to place objects in the exact rite spot and so much more.
Oof, you are a brave soul. That seed is NOT an easy journey for beginners :'D
Remember like 6 months ago when James said he was editing hardcore part 3?
If you can beat moon lord on mobile, you can play on switch with a blindfold on
I haven't finished watching this video. But I would love to try this out with Game Trials (26th Jan to 1st Feb) before I consider getting.
This is also a shout out if anyone wants to try it for free* before buying.

i have never been this early before btw great job with the video chippy! :)
My terraria switch wishlist

I never realised building out of your inventory is a thing in 1.4! (I probaly didnt know because i play with autopause)
I didn't even know that at all 😅
what does autopause do?
@@GabrielleTollerson if you open your inventory or the pause menu with autopause on, the game pauses
That's been a thing for ages though, hasn't it? I'm pretty sure it's existed since probably 1.2 or earlier, it's not exactly a new feature
Edit: wait you meant on switch version I am actually stupid
Idk if you mentioned it but the build from inventory is in console too. Press y to open inventory, highlight item and press y again instead of b
The price tag is the problem. it's triple the price on Switch and I'm struggling to justify that purchase, twice, to play with my wife.
Set the lighting mode to trippy for even smoother gameplay :)
Edit: not only that but the difference is nowhere near as noticable as it is on PC.
hey chippy, when you are doing a playthrough what size screen do you use? is it a 1920x1080?
Yeah I often play in 1080p :)
I really hope that new reforge system gets back-ported to PC!
I'm still waiting for part 3 of your hardcore master mode series
5 seconds and the question has already been answered, my man!
Omg thanks for noticing me!
Have they made it so we can connect our Storage items together into groups and move the inventory items around inside to create empty spaces?
For some reason when you play master mode on any console version the game doesnt give you an extra 6th accesory when you start. Im trying to complete hardcore master mode on console and this bug makes it harder.
you were able to build out of your inventory in switch 1.3. You just had to press the right stick down
Yes, but this specific change is still an upgrade because it lets you seamlessly move around and use items without needing to stop for anything.
The main problem i have with switch terraria is the controls that are kind of a pain to change.
The only thing that threw me for a loop was all my controls being remapped but I'm getting used to the new controls now! ×3
I have 25+ hours on it so far, the controls arent bad for me and the only downside is no mods but there is already so much to do
can you play with me? Whats your friend code?
@@NathanWoyessa i dont have switch online yet
Hi How do I use the furnace on the Nintendo Switch, I can't find it anywhere😭
@@sunlightskz in terraria the crafting bench and furnace all work by entering your inventory and crafting near it. All you have to do is be near it so put your bench beside the furnace
@ChippyGaming my 1st world is inacessable now, is it because it was made in 1.3.5?
Strange, i can still acces all my worlds made in 1.3.5
How do you get arkhalis ??
Are the controls fixed? When the update came out the control changes made it unplayable.
Am I the only one who went straight to my all sword chest and immediately crafted the Zenith as soon as it launch on switch..
Other than that 1.4 is so amazing for the switch, UI was a huge change for me.
Your inventory management burns my eyes
I’m been having hardest time getting use to the switch controls. I’ve been playing this game since it came on psvita. I need to rearrange everything on switch to vita controls.
I wish vita port had the 1.4 updates 😢.
Oh, the iOS version…haven’t touch it or the backbone that often so. Yea
Alright idk if this is happening to anyone else but it is to me and i hate it. when doing split screen, second player will be immune to all projectile attacks. it gets to the point where if youre playing split screen multiplayer, bosses such as the moon lord are a cake walk for second player. (but not first)
Hi. What do you think about terraria in the steam deck? Like the idea more to have the same word on the go as well on the PC
Chippy say when you open the inventory is goes up and is not good sometimes
Mobile players:'First time'
I never played this game but it’s on sale so I’ll give it a shot
Did they get rid of the duplication glitch? It seems with this update it doesn’t work like it used to unless they plan to fix that.
The craziest thing to me is how well the game runs, especially with how bad it could be in 1.3 on the switch at times.
The world loading and saving times have been reduced to mere seconds, alongside with the fact that almost all bugs were fixed
Really happy with this update, was worth the wait.
So chippy what are you going to say about the curser moving this time you can't say your mouse is light
I started playing not do long ago on switch ,today i got the cell phone for the first time
I miss pressing y to quick heal :(
you can change it
So is a different version to buy in the eshop?
I cannot aim up or down with the right analog stick no matter how much I fiddle with the controls. What am I doing wrong?
Do u know if switch has Mouse and keyboard capability yet for terraria.
watched this video already, but Im watching it again while playing on my switch. I have hundreds of hours on pc but picked up Terraria for 12 bucks on switch today
