"Majored in animal husbandry, until they caught him at it one day."
    The gargling bit.
    Diseases of the rich.
Beautiful. That preamble was absolutely beautiful.

“Diseases of the rich” reminds me of those overpaid, overfed gurus who cater to the very upper classes.

He is a brilliant pianist; he can imitate so many musical styles to fit with his (sick) songs. Ive been laughing with Tom Lehrer for a good 60 years and I admire his lyrics as well as his piano playing. In his own way, a genius.

I am now 79 and was first introduced to Tom Lehrer as a boy in England around 1958. His records were smuggled into England and an older friend of my sister's collected them. His humour and brilliant musical ability together with his display of language always fascinated me. I followed his talents all those unsure times of the 1960's. I am so pleased to have found him here on UA-cam and to show him off to my grandchildren.

The intro’s are always pithy and whacky. This one has to be a favourite. “ Diseases of the rich” is classic.

"affluenza" is such a bullshit concept. If some spoiled rich brat is *so* out-of-touch w/ reality that they aren't aware of the consequences of their actions, then logic & common-sense dictate need a *harsher* sentence to disabuse them of any such arrogance, not a lighter one.

@@thundermarkperun1083, I think you missed the point. That "diseases of the rich" was pure satire -- just like the supposed "Doctor Gall" majoring in "animal husbandry . . . until they caught him at it".

@woesmevrou5673, please excuse me if my previous reply caused offense: somehow, for some arcane reason, UA-cam thought to attach my reply to @thundermarkperun1083 to your post. And to borrow a line from Douglas Adams, "We Apologize for the Inconvenience".

70 years ago (in school), he wasn't like the other children, either!
I could totally imagine him sitting in class, drifting away from whatever the teacher was saying at the time, as he formulated evil songs in his head, for which he was summoned to the principal's office so he could "explain himself." LOL.

We had this ad a record in Ireland in the mid 60s & I learned to sing it (in my own key, as Tom would Say) when I was about Seven. I really enjoyed these songs & it still brings back happy childhood memories of Ireland & the bonkers 60s humor we shared as a family. 😂

Being from Spain, it's interesting how he mixes Mexican and Spanish stereotypes. Also, mixing Mexican styles with the Spanish pasodoble (doublestep) when talking about the bullfight (which is mostly associated with Spain) is just funny.
Seriously, just compare with the most famous pasodoble (España cañí - Romani Spain) ua-cam.com/video/fLAWrJwovuA/v-deo.html

What a unique educator Tom Lehrer was, in both math and comedy which he had taught in university on both coasts: in Harvard and in UC Santa Cruz!
I gladly had every Lehrer song memorized by the time I was ten, since my dad had all the recordings.
This made for interesting conversation between me and my high school teachers: like the day a substitute came into our chemistry class, wrote his name on the board, Mr. Braun, and I raised my hand and jokingly asked him if he's related to Werner Von Braun. (He didn't expect that question--or the rattling off of the elements, in song form--from a teenager.)
And many other opportunities of quoting Lehrer came in handy for me in other classes.

In delivery yes. That dry, straight tone is perfect for his own songs, but I doubt that anyone would have hired him to sing other material. Perhaps G and S as the Major General or Ko-Ko, or the Judge in Trial By Jury. The tradition there is for a "non singer".
