    Update: I was originally going to link you guys to Adorama's product page, a retailer that was selling the Jamo S809's for $330. As luck would have it, the price changed the moment I uploaded this review. So erm.. my bad. The price for the 809 is now at $389, which is what it routinely sells for. It's still not a bad deal, although the Polk T50's at $99 each seems like the better buy right now. Or you could just hold out for the next inevitable Jamo price drop. Or .. you could buy nada at all. Whichever way you wanna fly amigos.

      The T50, having 1 active and 2 passive drivers vs. Jamo S809 having 3 active? I lean toward them. I have the S809 (mint, no visual issues) and I think they out perform my bro's T50s. Worth the extra money.

    your format of distinguishing the entry level user from the audiophile is a very good idea. I think also some speakers are designed for home theater as opposed to audiophile use so sharp treble would correspond to accurate breaking glass but in an audiophile context it would be tiring during a sax solo for example. you are doing a great job Sean, and I always look forward to your reviews

    Nice review Sean, as always. Got me to thinking about my first set of speakers way back in 1977, a pair of Radio Shack Minimus 4s. At the time I thought they were fantastic compared to the sound I was used to from my portable cassette player. Of course now I know they were not great at all. The point is, as your review makes clear, it all depends on who's looking to buy them, a first timer or an experienced audiophile. BTW - I still have my first speakers - so many good memories!

    I agree this speaker is for the person who has never had good audio and doesn't doesn't know how to position speakers. Someone like that I think would be decently happy but I don't agree with your settlement in part one that dialog would be clear as the recessed midrange I think hurts dialog intelligibility or at least that's my experience with the S803 and S81C. Having lived in both part 1 and part 2 camps via my journey these are now not the speakers for me anymore.

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  3 роки тому +3

      Hello Tyler. It's all a matter of reference points. A lot of towers in this range will beef up the midrange to give it a warm/"full" sound. Now that may SEEM like a good thing on paper, but in practice, what you get is a driver that can distort easier and do a worse job of presenting dialogue. Of course, this becomes a non-issue once you move up to more expensive speakers. That said, good luck on the next move of your journey!

    I got the s805s (2 woofers) from Fry's (remember them?) for $115 (demos).
    I agree with everything you said. The bass is surprising from those tiny woofers. Very full which which makes them fun to listen to at medium volume. They're sensitive but lose all clarity if you turn it up. It's great that they have small footprint and that they don't need stands. They're perfect for a bed/dormroom. If they cost $389 I would spend a little more and get something from the Klipsch RP lineup which has similar voicing (Klipsch owns Jamo) but with more fidelity and power handling
    Mine aren't peeling

    A few months ago I got the 5 speaker pack in white (S803 main, S81 center, S801 surround) new from Amazon for under 200. It was a great deal. I then got 2 of the matching 8 inch subs. I was happy with the way they sounded. While I love the way they look in white, they kind of distracted when placed near my 85 inch TV. I decided to buy black ones when I couldn't pass up the deal for a used set of 809's from Adorama for 149. They came in perfect condition, just not in original box. Also bought a black S83 from Amazon for 89. Mission accomplished as they don't distract from the TV, but to me personally, they also don't look as good as they do in white.
    The issue I have is that I actually prefer the sound from the S803's on stands over the S809's. I guess I was expecting a bigger improvement in sound quality from the much larger model. I've listened to both with and without subs and crossed at different levels. The S809's do go a little lower but given the larger cabinet and 2 extra drivers I expected much better bass. The 803's seem to produce a tighter more controlled bass response vs the 809's which sound a little muddy. Since both models require a sub, I think the 803's are a better value. If you get them for home theater use, just make sure what color works for you next to the TV.

    The good: A speaker with magnetic grills at THIS price point is absolutely unheard of. No seriously, I was SHOCKED! (Take a hint Paradigm)
    The bad . . .
    I'm with you on the cosmetic imperfections. AND . . . they could have found an extremely affordable way to hide those glaring Atmos holes top-side. YUCK!
    As for the "sound" . . .
    If it's any where even close to your description, it sounds hideous.

      I'm no expert but I do like the pair I got. I think what has me sucked into being an audiophile is that I have perfectly good equipment I am happy with, including the S809s, and yet that doesn't stop me from mooning over other speakers with an intent to upgrade as soon as practical. Polk ES60 or equivalent has me intrigued. Maybe in about 5 years. I don't think the 809s are my forever speaker.

  • @ArchStanton3
    @ArchStanton3 3 роки тому

    I got a pair for $199 delivered, and it sounds great. Also the bass drivers are 4.5 inches from edge of surround to opposite edge... remember, most quoted bass driver sizes are with respect to mounting holes (which imo is kind of a scam, since teeters aren't measured the same way, but that's another topic). I'm powering the pair with a LePai 2020+ and a 12v6A power supply. Bass and treble are separately adjustable, so there's no music that I can't adjust to my liking.

      i am starting to give up on diameter measurements, cone area is always correct and more useful spec.
      recently bought small woofers, its twice as small because the inches was outside diameter, cone area was half what i expected.

    • @ZeroFidelity
      @ZeroFidelity  3 роки тому +1

      That's a damned good deal. Glad you're happy with them. Yes, you're right. The cone area is less than 5". I've pointed this out in previous reviews for the sake of spreading good info, but all it ever resulted in was people bickering and being overly dramatic. Not worth it.

    Though many dollars and years past being an entry level buyer and user, listening to you and other knowledgable reviewers compare and contrast audio gear well beyond my listening experience and financial means has afforded me a much higher level of understanding and appreciation for what distinguishes audiophile grades of equipment and sound quality from all the rest. I now know better how to make the most of and more judiciously upgrade what I have without throwing (too much) money away. This comparative review of lower end gear seems to have accomplished the same sort of thing for budget, entry level buyers without condescending or pandering. I did not think I was going to get much from a review of this particular product, but by laying out the basis of your comparison in such overt terms you added that much more to my ability to make informed choices. It seems I have a lot to learn. Happily subscribed.

      There are only two hi-fi YT channels that now consistently enjoy big numbers in terms of growth and views. Both channels have many things in common. While there's one or two that are growing steadily, most of the others are either on autopilot or facing more of a downward trend. ZF is included in the latter camp. So don't feel bad. It's not just you. And yes, there are many reasons for why things are they way they are atm.

    So I purchased the S809s over a year ago. I needed a speaker with a small footprint because I moved into a condo. I play my music at a lower volume now, so, they work well. I listen to jazz, piano jazz, and they work very well. I do have a tube amp which does offset the brightness of the tweeters. There is plenty of base for my music style. So, for the price, they work very, very well. You know what “they” say, different strokes for different folks. Great review.

    It must be a rare occurrence with the veneer peeling off, my 5.1 setup had all of its veneer intact.

    I would feel bad recommending Jamo speakers to anybody, even for their first pair. Probably scare them away from the hobby when their ears start bleeding.👂👈

    I really enjoyed your presentation, not once did I think you were being negative, in fact , it was win win.. you once told me that there are trade offs with value oriented gear. It's just the " nothing but facts" ..another refreshing Zero Fidelity..production. Oh.. I like the fancier background that you used for intro photos..for a second I thought I was on Andrew Robinson's channel..that I unsubscribed from..dang Algorithms..wth..lol

    See these reviews are phenomenal! You give perspective and not hype…it comes in handy for those of us that can’t audition speakers. Gives a great reference point. I was going to jump on these after getting Klipsch 5000f towers but now I’m more interested in these for a family member system (new to audio and wants to go the budget route).

    Actually I have read where the finish starts to peel in short periods time. So now that you have that review put in the can, lets jump up to a real, and I mean real AUDIOPHILE sound from a Speaker System under $1300 bucks. Achieving a legitimate 25hz to 23khz, the KLH Kendall towers are the single best Speaker System money can buy under $3000!! Yep thats a huge statement, but damn is it a true one!! Paired with the acclaimed Yamaha A-S801 (reviewed by you), and for a scoch over 2 Grand, you have a system that can compete with systems costing three times as much!! So I will end there and please man....review these speakers and even more so the pairing of the KLH and Yamaha Amp....I guarantee you will be very impressed by the superior and much more expensive sounding presentation. And believe me when I tell you, you won't even mention the need for a sub-(or two)!! (I am sixty year old who has auditioned hundreds of pieces of Audio Equipment)

    Interesting review. I auditioned these speakers at my home. At the time, I only had an old Panasonic stereo/amplifier to connect them to, so it's kinda hard to really make a judgment against them, given that I didn't have a better quality amp. But I will say that they sounded decent. Very impressive bass, and music in general sounded "good", tho not particularly detailed. But again, the amp plays a part in that as well. I eventually bought the JBL Studio 590s, and I now have a Yamaha rx-a780. They sound lovely together. I'm extremely satisfied, listening to every genre of music. I do wonder, tho, how the Jamos would pair with my Yamaha AVR. I guess I may never know.

    Sean, I have a challenge for you. have been watching your channel for a while now and enjoy what you do. I have a modest home stereo that I am very pleased with the end result. Spent about $5k. I won’t go into the details as this is not my challenge. Not sure how many of your viewers cross over to car audio but I have a system that I believe might stand up against the better of the home systems. I spent no where near $5k for this car audio system probably half of my home system and this eats my home system. The challenge is exactly what I’ve said. I would like for you to arrange for a listen to this car system and give an honest review as I believe you would be blow away. As you are totally focused on home equipment this is not what your channel is about I thought this type of comparison by someone like yourself would be interesting to say the least.
