Gotta agree on the boring and new pistons. EVOS last a long time. I did one for a guy that had over 100k on it and barely a mark on the cylinder walls, AND first over on them is .005”a hone will clean that up. His issue was tired rings and his valves had actually sunk into the head popping a rocker cover bolt out when the top of valve made contact. No over bore needed and he’s still going after 7 yrs. Same with a 107 S&S I got from a big Dog cheap. It had been thrashed and was burning oil like a pig. Tore it down and it needed rings and valve guide seals and the valves lapped. One of the smoothest Harley’s I’ve had, I put in a touring cam and slapped it in my bagger. I have bore gauges and there was no taper to the cylinders or gouges. In pistons or cylinders, even on the 84 with over 100k the scratches were minimal. The rings just lose their spring from heat cycles and wear. If it were a paying customer I’d let them choose, but when it’s my call, I look at everything and decide if it NEEDS to be done or just freshened up. Your inherent mech skills are admirable and necessary to live your lifestyle. You’re way more mech than a lot of “ techs” I’ve met to be sure. Keep logging the miles!
@@scootertrampscotty yup seen it several times and I think it’s a heat issue too, either that or they had some bad rings, but what are the odds a bad lot would still be around several yrs? Maybe it was just the supplier and metallurgy of the rings for a time combined with heat.

A few years ago, I was on eBay looking at motorcycle parts. I was very surprised at the number of top ends that were for sale on eBay for dirt cheap prices. People would take off the cylinders, pistons, rings, from practically brand new Harley’s because they wanted to install higher performance parts. And they would sell cylinders and pistons and rings and associated hardware slightly used for just a couple hundred dollars on eBay, there were lots and lots of them. I found them accidentally when I was searching for stock Harley take off mufflers to put on my Yamaha royal star venture. They go right on the ventures… there’s another part that’s remarkably cheap on eBay. I ended up getting a pair of mufflers that were only on the machine for the ride home from the dealership when the machine was picked up brand new. I got them delivered in the box that the aftermarket mufflers came in so the guy that sold the stock mufflers to me for $40 including shipping. they were off of a 2014 Harley Davidson street glide.. they had something like 30 miles on them. Apparently, too many Harley owners, the stock mufflers have zero value also, just like a set of barely use standard pistons and cylinders..
Thanks for sharing your story, I just did my rear valves, to seat them I used a drill and grinding compound, ( clamping the drill on the valve stem ) carefully turning the valve using the drill, my work space was a dirt ground it would make a mechanic cringe !! . I would have just gave them to you. Oh well some day i will find a use for them. With my 93 bagger i use oil too. There is 40k miles since rebuild and i was using probably a half qt. Every 1000 miles or so "synthetic oil". I changed back to conventional oil, running valvoline VR 1 straight 50 wt and now it barely uses oil. I think synthetic gets to thin when it gets hot . Conventional seems to hold its viscosity better stays thicker when hot. So for now on im running Conventional oil, cheaper too, just have to change it more often . My base gaskets don't weep oil anymore either with conventional oil.
Thanks anyway Jake. Synthetic oils are just plain thinner. I generally use Lucas 50wt synthetic because you can get it at the auto parts stores. But given the choice I'd use Klotz 20/50 because it's the only synthetic that's as thick as conventional. It's that I only gotta change it half as often thing that keeps me in synthetics.
