Hi Beau, A very interesting site, particularly the discovering river fords article. On that point the finding of "broken horse shoes" may in fact have another point : Here in Scotland , in the 17/19th centuries we had what were loosely termed Drovers who every year moved cattle from North Scotland to the cattle markets in the south of England for slaughter. As the journey could take up to three months over some pretty drastic overland trails, it was customary to fit shoes to the beasts feet to protect them. These shoes were almost identical to the broken shoes you are showing . The reason for the half shape was that the hooves of the beasts were not a total hoof as in horses but a part hoof. As there was insufficient hard hoof to nail to it was necessary to fabricate a part shoe. Over my many years of metal detecting I have come across literally hundreds of such shoes as the ones you show. Only point against that is the physical size of the Scottish shoe, being only about 2/3rd horse shoe size. (But then again as we know in the U.S everything is so much larger).. On a final note we use the shoe finds to possibly indicate overnight resting places, as the cattle moved about 12 to 16 miles per day , night resting at water holes or streams for the drovers and stock, where ,if lucky we also find coins as the drovers carried considerable sums of cash for trading

Good read, I’ve found shoes similar but not as big and they were for oxen. I think people don’t realize that oxen pulled wagons and generally not wagons
A Ford is a river or creek crossing used by pioneer travelers before there were bridges and in most cases not many roads but more like well traveled trails..

Native people didn't waste flint. The flakes you found are probably what's called a microblade. Fashioned to a bone or a hardwood twig with a small strand of cordage to make a small knife similar to a scalpel blade.

Only crocs in the northern part of Australia.
That trap is a Triumph made between 1913 and 1933. Some of those in good shape are worth some serious money to collectors.

Great video, i had not thought of hunting Fords, now i living on a island loaded with rivers there must be some old 18th century crossings close to home.
Gosh I couldn't figure out till 5 and 1/2 minutes in what he meant by Ford's. I thought he was looking for a car! He means we're horses crossed the river!

Over the years, when you do river searches.
Do you ever come across the bodies of missinb persons.
As after heavy floods bodies do end up in the next door county or state.
Or lost in time, when the sand-mud bank's collapsed into the water course.
Grime to find, yet intriguing to find out who they were.
And what was the reason they dead.

it must be a full time job hunting down all the owners of the lands, I've written a few people from address's gotten through county records and haven't had any replys....I'm leaving the Virginia area (having only hunted city parks)....haven't gotten to private prop hunt yet.

I have a map but its from 1875 it shows were the roads cross a stream near me but I don't know if it would have been a ford or a bridge then. About when were most fords changed into bridges? Thanks

For those looking for old maps, I'd recommend downloading Google Earth and then use the Rumsey Historical Map Collection overlay from here: www.davidrumsey.com/view/google-earth. Living in Arkansas this has been an invaluable tool when searching for old French forts, ghost towns, etc.
Those "broken horse shoes" are actually oxen shoes.

I have had a question for you, how do you decide what Creek and rivers to go to. I live by a river that's 15 to 20 feet deep and right now I don't have any scuba equipment , so I'm looking for advice on choosing other Creeks or lakes or whatever.I can search.
I realize that some of this is going to have to be done with research but for General use could you please give me some advice.

Ever come close to putting your hand in a trap? Just curious. As it seems you find these quite often.
I have been hunting since my dad got me a metrotec in the early 70's and transitioned to a Nautilus. I have avoided digital machines because I can hear the nature of the target with the analog. The garret has me thinking and that takes a lot of doing! I have decided on pro or gold. Is the gold worth the extra money for iron rejection?

It's just a river, pretty much legal, since it belongs to the state....public access.
Unless you're gettin em for free, theres GOT to be better tectors than those AT Anythings to use. I just don't understanding all the effort with an inferior machine????
