I worked at Hershey's Chocolate World (Hershey, Pennsylvania) as a "digital puppeteer" for 5+ years. The software and control rigs were purchased directly from the Jim Henson company! We'd manipulate a mechanical rig and the movements would be translated to a 3D-style cartoon character that was projected onto a movie screen. It was really neat, but also took quite a bit of practice to learn. (My background was in soft, "mouth" puppets.) That show is gone now, but I feel so fortunate to have had that experience! -- Anyway, thanks for your optimistic appraisal of puppetry's future! 🙂

Think about the new FNAF movie. The animatronics all looked so good and vibrant that initially I thought it was CGI. But then in reading the credits, it said they were all from the Jim Henson creature shop. And I think the movie was better because you could sense real humans behind these things. it's like a real haunted house that uses both animatronics and live actors it is scarier because you can't tell what is real and what is not. AI is good. I've played around with a lot of text-based ones. But no machine will ever be able to match the talents of real people. Their dialogue always sounds confused and they tend to repeat themselves a lot.

There are subtleties in a real human performer that Ai will never be able to match.

Absolutely agree that physical props and effects are about to hit a Renaissance. I've worked on a few films recently that really put practical effects at the forefront and the audience ATE it up. Puppetry ftw

Thank you so much Adam you are more than inspirational!😊 I made my first puppet after watching your tutorial .. making a puppet from scratch using a baseball cap about 6 years ago.I haven’t stopped since , I agree with what you said about if you make puppets you will use puppets. I certainly do , I work with adults with complex needs , they are non verbal .Puppets evoke such amazing responses , that’s because they are real ! you can touch them , they can immediately respond and link in with non verbal communication as well as verbal. Puppets span age , circumstance , cognitive and neuro differences. I perform in puppet teams for various churches , do work shops and plan to use them further in my work . CGI is amazing but puppets link in to something deeper within us , our primordial brain if you like. That’s why there will always be a place for hands on tangible puppetry …. Puppets are real … yeah!!! Again thank you so much Adam xxx

Glad that you point out that AI isn't new - it's being around for a long time, in much simpler forms. Something that most media seems to forget. What we're seeing now is more towards AGI - Artificial General Intelligence, which attempts to more closely replicate how a human mind behaves, in whatever context.
Also, robotic roaming performers at theme parks is a strange concept. I know Disney is working on a walking mini Groot, but could you imagine going up to Goofy, giving him a hug and behind the initial layer of padding, feeling all these metal bracers and hearing motors whirl?

Puppetry will never get taken over by AI or get away. I know a company who still is alive and well and the main attraction is puppet shows. I think it would never get old

Hi Adam, hope you're doing well.
I built my very first puppet a few years ago, a carnivorous plant, using your very helpful tutorials, thank you again !
That was a lot of fun and turned out very well (I showed her to Tim Clarke and he said she's nice !). I'm not very good at performing but I do it anyway because it would be a pity not to use the cutie.
I very much feel like a maker because I love to make cute characters. I customize dolls, I crochet amigurumis...
But the more I perform my puppet at fantasy fairs, the more I feel at ease. I still don't know how to make her talk so she only makes noises that I can make with my mouth closed.
I think puppetry is life, and love and dream. I grew up with The muppets, my favourite cuddle toy was a Kermit, I was and still am in love with Labyrinth, The dark crystal and Neverending story (I met Atreyu. God, he's hot now).
I feel puppetry is like giving life, it's amazing.
When you meet kids while performing your puppet, they respond so much to it. Many of them wanted to pet my plant, put their hands in her mouth. One little girl asked her if she knew how to read and went to school ! I was delighted. For them, my plant was a living being. So rewarding !
On the opposite, I feel like AI has no life in it, no soul. Same goes for CGI. A movie made with CGI can never compare to a Miyazaki movie, IMO.
And one must not forget that AI makes things by stealing from artists. I'm a fan of many visual artists like painters, whose paintings are currently stolen and used by AI. And enterprises sell the result ! And I'm afraid my artists will starve !
As a computer engineer, I feel my job is also very threatened by that.
I hope you're right about the renaissance of art. I'm so scared AI will be the end of it.
After all, Internet has make art even bigger, by making learning and sharing easyer. Let's hope. I like how positive you are.
Robot puppets would be exciting but I think they should have real puppeters and not AI, so they feel alive.
I have a creative internet board and I'm currently hosting a sock puppet challenge. I hope many members will participate. Let's make more and more people interested in puppets !
Sending love and health to you ! Please dont' work too much, take care !

I think the widespread use of AI to generate entertainment is going to spur not just live pergormance resurgence (because that already is happening). I think there will be a boom in independent classical film making once the major studios go all in. You're going to see previously " major" talents working in much lower budget independent films. That includes puppeteers, as well.

Another point that MUST be hand-in-hand with the rise of AI is the implementation of U.B.I.
If you're going to replace humans, you MUST find a way to support humans.
Thats why I support the idea of an AI tax. Gotta pay for that technology danger somehow.

Let me begin by stating that the I in Large Language Model is for Intelligence.
CGI, algorithms, autocorrect... None of these is an Artificial Intelligence.
Intelligence needs the computer to know and knowledge is built on understanding, understanding requires experience and computers, for now, have it difficult.
Generative models (text or images) are not Artificial Intelligence. They are what is called stochastic solutions. Predictions made by guessing pondrered responses based on statistics.
For them to be created, you need them to consume existing materials (copyright issues) that, basically, tell them how to differentiate between the number 3 and a bee.
We still don't understand (not fully) what happens inside the machine learning processes.
This all has been hyped out of proportion, selling a lot of snake oil that is literally taking jobs by the thousands in the tech industry, where executives have belived the hype of what those models can do and how it will "save them money".
The cost of each prompt to the ones exposed to the public (via OpenAI and others) is immense, monetarily, but it carries also a huge cost to the environment (do you know what it takes to cool the servers that work on this?).
Why do I say all this? What am I selling? Am I just a tech hater that doesn't understand or want to move ahead? No.
I'm a tech person that wants true assistive technologies to come forth. That assist people with their day to day, rathe than substitute them.
Tools that help others to lower the barrier of entry (in this case, into puppetry, but it can also be other cases too).
This thing that is doing the rounds right now? This is not it.
Blockchain isn't a solution, a quick lookup will show you how many of those systems get hacked (almost daily). That's a thing from the old hype cycle (and look where that is now and who got affected by it). Curiosly enough, the same kind of actors from that hype cycle are now promoting and defending these generative technologies...
Be well. Thanks for your content. Happy 2024!

It’s all a matter of how intelligence is defined and whether or not the turing test matters. In my opinion memory and recall is a significant sign of intelligence, it’s just not a sign of consciousness. These two things are not exclusive, but they can be connected.
