My words exactly. I used to work as a nurse and had so much time to spend with my family. Now I worked as a NP and barely have anytime to spend with my kids. I’m gonna quit the job soon. Life is too short. I’ve gained so much weight sitting behind a desk.

This is 100% true. Nobody covers my work, so if I take a week off I just come back to a mountain of emails and loads of people furious that I haven't done X, Y or Z while I have been away. This is not a good way to live.

I refuse to give in to this culture in the US of hustle, constant grind and being available 24/7 for your job.
I get 4 weeks off a year and take every single day off. My husband and I travel abroad and I am not sacrificing my mental sanity and time off for no job. My laptop and work phone stay home. If I am THAT important that I can’t take proper time off, then I am not making enough money and I need a raise 😂
Remember folks: companies will fire you and lay you off in 2.5 seconds and they won’t give a damn.

I always take my vacations. I believe vacations are so important for mental health but in the company I work it's almost like they look down on you for taking you earned paid time off. To the point that I've seen people lose their pto because of that and for the company that's great because they don't pay for unused pto.

I used to be afraid of taking time off because of coming back to all my work piled up, but now I just let it be and say hey if it builds up I’ll just come back and do what I can. I only have so many hours to do work and I’ll do what I can during those hours. If I can’t do it all then oh well that’s my employers fault and not mine.

I am self-employed and can take as much time off as I want, I just have to make up for it later by working extra. But the thing is, every time I go on trips anymore I am disappointed. Hotels or other accommodations are wildly overpriced. These days, restaurants are also expensive and rarely satisfying experiences, and overall travel is just a headache. Part of the problem is that I have done so much traveling in my life that I’m not as thrilled by going places as I used to be.

You are so right. I find that being home and staying close to it are the best “vacations”. Visiting family is good, but I make it clear I have ZERO agenda, no requirement to make plans to keep us “busy”. Enjoy their company and catch up. Prepare food together. Nap, lounge around. With elderly family maybe help with small repairs or projects they have a hard time doing themselves. Feel so much less stress, more satisfied and less disappointment when its over…plus generally less expensive. Less really can be more when it comes to vacations.

We had a rare situation.... I worked at a small rural hospital, very small. Day shift required 3 nurses on staff, 1 RN and 2 LPN's. Night shift, we would skate by with 1 RN, 1 LPN, and 1 on-call nurse, EMT or Aid. This was under the premise that it takes 3 people to run a code. 1 to do compressions, 1 to do breathing and one to call for help. My last 6 months or so there we weren't allowed to take time off because so many nurses had quit that there weren't enough of us to cover the basic staffing needs. Long story short, after 100 some years of operation in the community, this hospital closed. No surprise, but boy does the community suffer for lack of health care now. Most folks now travel over an hour to see a basic doctor now.

People assume you die in peace, you don't....... you suffer as your body fails you...... maybe weeks, maybe months, maybe years. There's a tradition in our buddhist household where we are told from generation to generation, you begin to die from your feet upwards and I've watched it happen to my grandma and dad. You lose your feet and legs first. Some of us will suffer from cheyne stoking from death, a pretty regular occurence but for some terrifying..... Most of us who will be given long life will die from most likely four deaths....... look up Peter Attia about that!! So it's coming. When you witness a lot of death and dying..... the one thing that doesn't come across is the message "hey, I committed to work and I have no regrets I didn't take the holidays with my loved ones",. At your funeral, non of the CEO's or even work colleagues show up. Also..... if you didn't spend sufficient time building love between your loved one's, remember you will create estrangement. They will visit you less and less as you didn't invest the time to build a relationship. So you become a familial person...... not family. They will visit you less and less as you will remind them of old age breakdown and death. You become a creepy symbol of our inevitable ending. But please.... always remember....... your job needs you now!!!

Moms are using vacation days to take the kids to the doctor and dentist. Then we take days for awards at school. We take days to take our elderly parents to the doctor and for test.
Then when we do have free time, we don't want to be price gouged in the name of a vacation.

OK Ken i’m sorry I’m lost. Maybe it’s just me. I have a small business in Charlotte. I go out I service my customers who are mostly corporate or high-end home. I have a niche service. I make my own schedule. I show up when I want to I sleep when I want to I eat and drink when I want to. That’s it. I don’t have any worries. I have lots of good customers with lots and lots of money and they pay me and I don’t have to worry. Now, I’m getting older and I’ve done this long long time. I still enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun service I provide to my customers. But, at 66 years old I’m thinking about moving on and that’s gonna be just fine. The great ride I’ve had with all these customers down through the decades, the next ride is going to be just fine and fulfilling. I really don’t know what else to say , I’m a very happy man.

It’s a pain to take PTO and then have all the extra work coming back. Also, just asking for time off can be a pain. But despite this, I’ll be taking three weeks off next year to go to Asia and a couple to go to South America. Also, If my employer lets me, which I doubt, I’ll go to Europe for almost two weeks next year. It’s all worth the workload I have coming back! Last year I used up all my PTO and was in the negatives. So this year I’m building my PTO back up and will only take one week off. I envy people with unused PTO!!!

Vacations and short weekend trips are so important for our family. Fortunately we can still afford it. I work at school so I have all the school breaks including the 2 summer months off. My husband is also fortunate that he’s off on the weekends and holidays, and gets a 3 day weekend twice a month. We’re in the U.S. but he works for a large British corporation that values work-life balance and gives their employees every other Friday off. He also has a 3 week PTO and we go on a big vacation once a year and short weekend trips once a month. Our kids just don’t realize how lucky they are to have this opportunity bc my husband and I did not growing up.

I was there for many years but new management means new corp. culture.

We were down to 2 people in the middle of covid, but they both decided to move on. One of them could do everything but he wasnt happy he had to work when he saw how people all over were paid to not work. We thought keeping his job was a positive.
We are in our mid 60s and did it all ourselves until this past December. But our 1 full time guy is just a button pusher so we had to shut down a day to go to an out of state wedding. We have a couple part timers. Second job for one who is the full timers sister and a retiree who doesnt want to mess up his SS.

I would look at travel advertisements that were "on sale". Usually they were last minute things that were bundled but did not sell good enough. They were frequently 4 or 5 day trips that did not even take a week. I brought my entire family with me typically for the price of one person. We bought food at market's rather than eat out. We walked or took busses instead of talking a taxi. This way I have my child a broad view of the world, China, Japan, us, Canada, Australia, Europe, central America, etc... you can do great vacations cheap or at least alot cheaper.

My team gets paid very well for the area. There are always a few that never use their vacation days cause they just don’t have a desire to travel. At most, they do weekend trips to a local lake or attend a college football game.
