    This new Sigma is shaping up to be the very best 35MM lens currently made, although not perfect it excels in so many important ways. Used with some discretion to avoid the flaring issue it achieves virtual perfection. The environmental portraits displayed in the video were truly excellent, your wife must be complemented on producing a perfectly focused and very well composed portrait of you. Great work as always Dustin Abbott, thank you for sharing.

    LOL: ironically enough, this expensive combo of 35/1.2 and A7r4 is the ideal setup for beginners /novices, as they can take off the lens cap and press the shutter release while aiming the lens towards an area where there are humans, and then later on have someone cut out the person that happens to be in focus (so now we know why 61MPs is required !) now with perfectly sharp eyes.
    Great episode Dustin, thanks!

      @@DustinAbbottTWI Joke aside; I am stunned by the awesome bokeh of this lens, it looks much similar to the legendary Leica Summicron 35 in my opinion. Finally Sigma got the bokeh right!! And thanks to the eye-AF we can put all our effort into composing and lighting instead of fighting to get the iris tack sharp. A final note: even old manual lenses can now benefit from eye-AF on A9/A7r4/A7riii via the adapters with motor from TechArt or Fotodiox ; simply AMAZING!

In a way the 35 1.2 reminds me a lot of the 105 1.4. Very similar performance and prone to lens flare. They are the first two lenses I got on my A7RIII. Been SUPER happy!!

    Is the Tamron 35mm f1.4 ever coming to Sony? Tamron 35mm vs Sigma 35mm f1.2 vs Sigma 40mm f1.4 would be such a fierce battle. Your experience that the 35mm gains more sharpness in the center but much less so in the corners stopping down 1 stop matches the measurements of Lensrentals. I like how you tested flare a bit. I read reviews for the three lenses but they all had very little flare testing. Maybe all the elements in the two Sigma lenses adding to the weight also make the flare a bit worse.
    Good review as always.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      That particular Tamron will not come to Sony, as it is a DSLR design. I'm almost certain that Tamron will deliver a dedicated 35mm F1.4 at some point to Sony, and if it performs like the SP DSLR version, it would be a very special lens.

    I can't see myself buying this over sony's 35mm f1.8, it's size and price makes so much more sense in my opinion. I have to carry my own gear and I need more than 1 lens in most of my shoots. If I walk around with 1 lens I want it to be relatively light.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

  • @kunalmj
    @kunalmj 4 роки тому

    Thank you! Fantastic review, as always. I own the Samyang and this sigma looks very good as well. Is there a situation in which you would need such sharp corners at apertures below f2.8? In almost every situation, they are out of focus.

    • @SourDonut99
      @SourDonut99 4 роки тому +5

      If you are shooting a group shot at a dark wedding for example. You might shoot at f1.2. People would be on the same focal plane and you're standing far enough back so the depth of field isn't a issue. That's when you would want edge to edge sharpness.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +2

      Ian has provided a reasonable situation, and I would add that I often compose near the edges for close focus shots where I want an out-of-focus scene beyond, but your point is a fair one. Classic portrait lenses often purposefully left corners a bit softer in order to allow for sharp centers and a smaller size.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому +1

      That's a good question. I think the sharpness levels are similar, and it's possible that the Tamron has ever-so-slightly nicer rendering. The Sigma has an aperture advantage, obviously.

    Can somebody make a high IQ 25-50 F3.3?
    -
    Lenses are not great or worth the money simply because they have a wide aperture. The sad thing about the FE mount is that the company who chose to focus on high IQ lenses of moderate aperture - namely Zeiss - had also chosen to make their entire Batis line unnecessarily FAT. I love the fact that the 3rd parties are stepping up with more choices for the mount. But, I really want a SMALL lens with superlative IQ, not giant bazookas.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 роки тому

      I've never seen a lens with quite that focal length, and I suspect that marketing an F3.3 aperture would be near impossible (F3.2 is actually the third stop). I fail to see where a lens like that would be better than, say, the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8, which is already quite compact and light and has excellent image quality.
