I remember reading the thread about this on Reef Central years ago. There was so much hate and fear. I think it's a great idea as long as you put some thought into how you implement it.
Looks a lot of fun, but dangerous and ineffective when compared to a proper solution like AiptasiaRX. Also, Aiptasia will release gametes when burned multiple times, like this. I also wonder how long will take for the fish to get blind with it...
Just so you know, you can use just one 18650 battery instead of always having to charge the two small batteries, that don't last as long. Look in to it, if someone hasn't already suggested. Tony
Might work for Majano anemones, but if you use it on Aiptasia you'll have a plethora of them when you're done. I started with 6, I have over 150 now. When you cook them, they releases gametes into the water and then you have a problem.
Never worked for me in the way it was described. The moment the laser light touched the aiptasia the aiptasia withdrew into a small crack and the heat from the laser would dissipate in the water. If I did burn the anemone that part may die but the parts left would just regrow. I did pull some rock out of the tank. With nothing to dissipate the light the anemone would crackle and burn and smoke as the light destroyed it never to survive but I had to do it outside of the tank. As far as the batteries not lasting my kit contained battery chargers so that was not a problem for me.
Hey Marc, when using these lasers, which is a Class 3 laser, make sure you keep an eye on where your fish are at. This laser can and will burn their eyes to blindness. I use them in my work on animals both the Class 3 as well as Class 4 ( much stronger).
I hunted Aptasia in my nano with a 3W laser from a cutting machine. Works really well. Only once was needed to kill my aptasias. I heard the sound of the aptasia crackling...
I wonder if you put the laser in a ziplock bag, submerged it in the water and got real close to the aiptasia or majanos if it would be more effective, less diffusion through the glass and less water to scatter the laser.
A.Treveno, it won't burn the plastic as it is not a class 4 laser. Class 3 lasers are cold lasers. If you are putting it under water, I would.not trust a Ziploc bag, but you would have to get it into a food saver locked bag. Don't use the sucktion mode because you would want to be able to manipulate the position inside the bag. I in my work use Both Class 3 and more so Class 4. The class 3 I use is a ML830 ( they are not cheap), but they are not as expensive as class 4 $30.000.
Make sure to be aware of the cycle duty of your laser. Generally speaking it's recommended to leave the laser on for no more than 60 seconds with a 60 second break in between cycles. This is to ensure your diode doesn't burn out early.
Good point. While I was told it would last 5 minutes with each set of batteries, my impression is they are barely good for a minute. After that, results are less obvious. I have a bunch of sets of batteries, so I have to open it up and swap those out so often, it's like I'm letting it cool off because of that alone.
Your very lucky to get a laser like that. In the US we got a stupid Federal law that makes it illegal for vendors to sell lasers over x wattage however they are legal to own/make. I’m positive a wicked laser might work they have a few models that are legal to buy without customs taking them away.
one of the things i have been doing with great success is using a simple air line tube. then i siphon the off into a 2ltr soda/pop bottle in a filter sock that sits in my sump. (i use this as a vacuum bag) you just jam the pipe over the top of the Aiptasia and leave it for a few hours. it will eventually just let go and get sucked down into the bottle. i have done it on really big ones too and it still works.
Great Video. The most informative on the subject I have seen. I just ordered a 3 watt laser. Ill be posting some videos on my channel as soon as I get this bugger...

for the aiptasia use berghia verrucicornis they will eat every last one of them and if u breed some aiptasia u can have nudibranch snails in your tank and as long as there are aiptasia the nudibranch will live and even breed
This laser is a great idea, but I have a couple concerns about it. Firstly, it is very easy to kill your nearby corals with it, as evidenced by the dead and burnt-looking section of the coral in your tank. Secondly, I am worried about the fish's eyes being exposed to the laser. We have handy little goggles to protect ourselves from going blind, but they do not.
The light reflecting off the glass alone burned my retina. It wasn't even pointed directly at me. Both my eyes caught the reflection with goggles. It is WAY too dangerous. It does the job, but I will never touch one again
Hey mate I really appreciate the warning as my Eyes are really fucked already. If I bought extra heavy duty Science googles do you think it would protect my eyes?
Jeff R. A friend of mine just bought a 2-watt laser off ebay. I got to see it tonight, it was made by Wicked Lasers. It was all black and looked just like the heft of a lightsaber... I need to go back and actually try it out. :)
I'm still zapping them. I haven't lasered any in nearly a week, instead of staying at it daily. I think daily is the best way to eradicate them. They definitely are smaller and aiptasia are clear instead of brown. But for sure there are less in my tank. :)
It's the amperes that are what you should focus on. Not volts. Imagine that a laser gun is 20,000 v but still doesn't kill you, because the amperes are lower than the death range
Update? Q: Did they end up just spreading out via gametes? Did they return? Has the laser solved your aptasia problem? Curious what the end result is...that;s all that matters. thanks!
Another great video as always. I have a 5 W laser and I’ve done some videos on it as well. I would say that the 71 is probably optimal. But good luck finding one of those in the US. They are regulated by the food and drug administration. I would caution your users that any safety glasses used with a laser should have the band with etched into the glass of the glasses. The glasses are matched to the band with of the laser.
May I ask the cost of the whole 400g setup? I'm looking into upgrading to a bigger reef tank (400g), and need an estimate of the cost of the total setup that I would need.
Marc! I just had a late night idea! I'm starting to battle dino. Flagettes that is.... I'm starting to win the war but wonder what effects laser would have on the visible spores that sometimes cling to the rock?
Interesting. I don't know but I do have some strange brown stuff growing on part of the sandbed that reminds me of dinoflagellates so I may just have to give it a 'shot' and see what happens.
Chris Crigger Thanks. I've tried buying a few copperband butterflies over the years, but had very little success keeping them alive unfortunately. I don't want to be "that guy" that just keeps buying them and watching them die. I had one for nearly 5 years, but when it died I could never get a replacement that lasted more than a week. :(
Ever worry about blinding your fish? I read extensively on lasers a couple years ago with the big RC craze and got lucky with peppermint after being lazy with a couple aptasia breaking free, but that was always my biggest concern. Well that and run-on sentences.
I've seen some fish watch what I'm doing, but they don't seem to be affected at all. Specifically the Lyretail Anthias were herding together to see what I was doing one day, so I had to keep an eye on them as I zapped a majano to avoid they getting hurt, and Spock swims over like a whale shark, but doesn't stop. They still respond to movement and food in the water, and appear to see just fine. It's my impression they aren't adversely affected. Plus some of these pests are in a nook of the rockwork, so the spot of light is somewhat hidden from their view.
In this video there is a bookshelf behind you I have a 20 gallon tank do you think that it would hold if I put it on the shelf behind you The shelf would be sideways

+melevsreef No, but I found another way of using boiling water and a syringe that seems to have worked for me. Although I do like your method better:) thanks
+melevsreef that one in the video would be a 1.2W (watts) or 1200mW (milliwatts) which should be fine for anything 12" or closer to the glass. Typical laser pointers fall in the
I just had to wonder on something. The product maker. As WHY isn't there a plug in end. Disreguarding any problems it can have. There should be glasses to that it won't damage your eyes and see normal colors.
I really hope this works; please keep us updated. I am really curious if any of the aptasia come back. I tried the majono wand and felt like I was simply fragging the aptasia. Even though it looked like I had killed them, more always came back in the same spot.
3578lehcar Usually they hitchhike in on rock or new frags. I should have been more proactive to make sure they didn't spread by scraping them off, but for a long time there were just a few. Over time, they have gotten out of hand, hence the desire to buy a laser. I zapped a bunch of them today.
So my biocube is 4 months old have a cleaner crew to size but I am noticing red on the sand appearing???? Could this be from over feeding or too much light?
your nitrate levels are probably a little high, and most likely like u said from over feading, its a nano so things can crash pretty fast! However, you can just siphon off the red algae, and u said u have a little cleaner crew so that should help.Lastly make sure its not coraline algae your taking off!Im sure you know the difference though😉Hope that helps some.
You could do with a phosban reactor and Po4 removing media. I have a 4 month old 60G and its got cyno and hair algae and im hardly feeding at all. Setting up my phosphate reactor tomorrow.
I went to the fish store and saw a majano on a piece of crushed coral and thought it was a baby bubble tip at first so I asked the guy if I could have it for free since its so small and yea I got it or free. Did some research about tiny anemones and found out it was an majano. Didnt know they were a pest. Zzz... At least its still on the piece of crushed coral so I can remove it easily.
I brought 4 file fish before I got the right one, that Lil guy is thriving in my tank and has eradicated every aptasia. in my tank and he hasn't touched anything else
I don't know. I've made it a rule to not have mushrooms in my tank since 2004-2005. The only way to know is to try it yourself. I cut mine off the rock with dental tools, and kept at it until there were none. That's no easy task. The laser cost $220.
melevsreef they're $107 here. Not sure if its legit or not. www.dhgate.com/product/450nm-1-5w-1500mw-burning-focusable-blue/157788055.html#s1-3-1|4057765403
I have done both. It depends where the pest anemone is. I prefer the closest distance, so sometimes from above and other times through the side of the tank's glass walls.
hello my friend! how are you! first thing! i watch allot of your videos and they are verry help/learn full!! big thumbs up for al the good videos that you make!👍keap up the good videos! i just new in the hobby, and build slowely up my tank butt i see this nice laser that you use! i whant to buy this also for me for later, when i must killed them!! hehe.. butt i have a question? can you point the laser to the glas? is this no problem? for the glas,or something like that! maybe it is a stupid question hehe.. butt for security i whant to know for sure!! thanks best regards from the dutc-man from the netherlands!
+Dutch Design Yes, you can point it through glass or acrylic. That is what I was doing in this video. Be cautious to watch for any reflections off the glass (think of it like a mirror) that could burn something nearby -- even your own hand.
I did burn a hole through a patch of valonia, just to see what would happen. But I didn't try to target every bubble to erase them. I'll have to give that a try. ;)
Thanks, ordered one. green burning laser. 2000mw with the case and glasses, rechargeable batteries. Guess watch ever so carefully no fish even get close.
Make sure you have the ability to focus the tip. If you can't focus it to a needle-like point on the subject, all you have is a fancy laser *pointer* and not a tool to eliminate aiptasia.
I just got a brand new one today. I shared a picture of it on facebook as well as instagram. I'm everywhere as @melevsreef so you can find me easily. Did a very quick test out of the package and zapped three aiptasia rapidly. I'll do an update video soon, as soon as I know this is a solid product that deserves to be shared. :)
+melevsreef dunno, currently in that tank there is a Clarkes clownfish and it's kind of a bully so I don't want a Cole tang to get bullied. also it wasn't "mine" it was my dad's so it's up to him
abreezeducttesting Sorry to hear that. Leave them unattended long enough, they will dominate a tank. Just keep in mind you'll need to zap away your pests regularly until you can't find them anymore. If you do it daily (takes 5-15 minutes), you'll definitely win the battle. Have extra batteries on hand. :)
If you need protective glasses to operate it. What do you think it does to the animals in the tank? Your fish will eventually go blind, and it will go faster than you think.
The fish usually stayed away, but if they got too close I shut it off quickly. I never pointed it directly at anything other than the desired item. It was used several times, and none of my fish were ever affected with blindness.
Even partial reflections will hurt their sight. Any laser stronger than 5 milliwatts can cause retina scaring and blind spots just by reflected hits. Even your camera is picking up a lot of the reflections that are sent all over the place. All your corals are "lighting up". Those lasers are dangerous! Anything bigger than 2milliwatts is illegal to sell retail in my Country for a reason.
+Matthew Wilde I'm still zapping them from time to time. I lent it out for a while and ignored the problem, so they are back. I need to be proactive and just eradicate them entirely.
I remember reading the thread about this on Reef Central years ago. There was so much hate and fear. I think it's a great idea as long as you put some thought into how you implement it.
Well said.
Copper banded butterfly fish love aiptasia, and they are great additions to a mixed reef tank. awesome personalities.
Great video bro, I also bought a few weeks ago the blue laser 3 Watt+ by Zeus Lasers and it works great!
I bought a blue laser as well from Zeus Lasers, it kills the aiptasia super fast!
Dude, for real? Because you are making me reach for my wallet.
If you are able to get the rockwork out, you can superglue it. You can also epoxy them shut if they're underwater.
Looks a lot of fun, but dangerous and ineffective when compared to a proper solution like AiptasiaRX. Also, Aiptasia will release gametes when burned multiple times, like this.

I have to be the first to say this... "Sharks with Frickin' Lazers!" That's a pretty cool gadget!
It's entertaining too.
Would've been better off using "Liquid hot Magma"... :P
melevsreef where can I order one of the lasers from?
I just did this myself. I borrowed the laser from a friend (1 watt purple thing) and a focusing lense. works well.
can someone lead me to a diagram of the item at 2:15, there is nothing like it on the market and i'd like to make one for myself.

melevsreef Have you tried this on bristle worms?
Hey can you let me know the specs on the laser so I can find a reasonably price one online. Does it have to be blue? Or a specific nm? Thanks
I'd aim for 2000mw and make sure you can focus the tip. 450nm is the wavelength.
do you know a wattage on the LED laser ? I've been researching and found 2,3 and 4 watt but huge price difference.
+Dan Dethloff Mine is 1.2 kw, or 1200 mw.
@@melevsreef lol...1.2kw.
So where do the pest anemone come from? Do they just spawn from the coral or are they accidentally purchased?
+James Johnson It can come out of the rockwork, or it can come in on frags.
melevsreef Oh ok
Wow, I always called them Mag ano. Not Ma-hanos. You learn something every day.
Can't seem to find these now mate? Can you still get them?
There are always new laser vendors, you just have to shop around.
Really awesome video! That laser is a beast and well worth the $220
I hope so. So far, so good.
So where do the anemones come from. do they grow and form like parasites or are they their own species that you would have to buy to see?
They can sneak in when very small inside frags or crevices of rocks.
+melevsreef thanks
+melevsreef thanks
I brought 4 file fish before I got the right one, that Lil guy is thriving in my tank and has eradicated every aptasia. in my tank and he hasn't touched anything else
I tried all that other cap my filefish, is amazing
oh now that he can't find aptasia, he eats mysis.
Will they work on freshwater algae in plant tanks??
Tony Wong I don't know.
I always found aptasiaX to be the best and my favorite. I've got a laser andwill try this
What's the wattage?
I have a ton of mushrooms, how well do you think this would work? And then the killer question how much was it?
I don't know. I've made it a rule to not have mushrooms in my tank since 2004-2005. The only way to know is to try it yourself. I cut mine off the rock with dental tools, and kept at it until there were none. That's no easy task. The laser cost $220.
melevsreef they're $107 here. Not sure if its legit or not.

Looks a lot like the one I got, and appears to be shipped directly from China. I bought mine at a LFS with whatever markup they applied.
melevsreef thanks guys I just ordered one. I'll let you know how well it works.
Please do.
very good what is laser used please how many mw?
I have a 1200mw laser, but there are more kinds available these days. I've replied below in the comments with additional information.
Hi do you laser through the glass or above the open tank ?
+melevsreef thanks for the nice feedback!! and keap up the good videos!!
+melevsreef thanks for the nice feedback!! and keap up the good videos!!
can this work be done by any colour lazer or is it purple colour only?
Blue, Red or Green are common colors often used. Mine is blue.
I want one
That's what I said. :)
You can also get a copperband. that will eat aptasia.
How does it work on bubble algae ? Just curious.
I did burn a hole through a patch of valonia, just to see what would happen. But I didn't try to target every bubble to erase them. I'll have to give that a try. ;)
How many mw? milawatts is it? Would it be safe through an acrylic tank?
I used 1200mw, and yes you can use it through acrylic.
Thanks, ordered one. green burning laser. 2000mw with the case and glasses, rechargeable batteries.
Guess watch ever so carefully no fish even get close.
As long as you don't have the laser, go straight into your eye. You're gonna be okay
I think instruments/tools as such can be a way to make an extra profit for our LFS!!!
As in tool rental
I was looking at ordering a laser but could only find 1600/445 or 2000/450. Would the 2000 be too powerful??
2000mw or 3000mw would probably be better. Mine is 1200mw and I wished it was stronger.
melevsreef found a few between $76 - $99
Make sure you have the ability to focus the tip. If you can't focus it to a needle-like point on the subject, all you have is a fancy laser *pointer* and not a tool to eliminate aiptasia.
Great video! Thanks
Were can I buy one. Thanks
And if you find the website than I reccomend buying a 1 - 3 watt one
They sell rly cheap ones
What laser you Using. Where can I get one ?
I just got a brand new one today. I shared a picture of it on facebook as well as instagram. I'm everywhere as @melevsreef so you can find me easily. Did a very quick test out of the package and zapped three aiptasia rapidly. I'll do an update video soon, as soon as I know this is a solid product that deserves to be shared. :)
any update on where to purchase this laser?
Next week. Just bought a new one, as I mentioned in today’s live stream.
great vid as always !! i need to find one of these lasers
is a 6000nm laser good or do i need a stronger one? thanks
Mine is 1200 milliwatts. Sorry, I don't know the answer to that.
ya sorry it was 6000mw?
ivanthegod It sounds like the one you've found is five times stronger than mine. I think 1200 to 1800mw is all you need.
ivanthegod Look like a 2w or 2000mw to me I have 3w /3000mw and there burn a lot FASTER
i miss having a kole tang and i saw one at 7:55 so that was sad
+joe a Will you get another?
+melevsreef dunno, currently in that tank there is a Clarkes clownfish and it's kind of a bully so I don't want a Cole tang to get bullied. also it wasn't "mine" it was my dad's so it's up to him
i might missed it but how many watt is your lazer
+Ghia Power 1200mw, but you probably would be better off with a 2000mw.
will the laser damage acrylic?
No issues with glass or acrylic.
So cool...
My tank was destroyed by aiptasia. I have a video on it called " the take over " thanks for the help
abreezeducttesting Sorry to hear that. Leave them unattended long enough, they will dominate a tank. Just keep in mind you'll need to zap away your pests regularly until you can't find them anymore. If you do it daily (takes 5-15 minutes), you'll definitely win the battle. Have extra batteries on hand. :)
Im still building a 180ga. But before the rock comes I need to get a laser....take care
What happens when you point the laser on the fish
I don't do that.
Since using the laser what's the update ? Does it work?
+Thomas Coleman It does work, and is very handy in difficult to reach areas.
Do you know what model this was, ive been looking at there seems to be 1watt & 2w and different NM laser colours, with purple being the better one?
How you not burn a hole through the glass?
It doesn't. You focus the beam on the subject, not the glass itself. But even then, it's shining through the glass.
Wickedlasers sales some nice high powered lasers if you want a good start
I've heard they can't sell them in the U.S. - do you know if that is true?
That looks to be true after looking at their site.
Update? and great videos, subscribed
+Matthew Wilde I'm still zapping them from time to time. I lent it out for a while and ignored the problem, so they are back. I need to be proactive and just eradicate them entirely.
R.I.P Anemones. I want that laser lol. I have no idea why since I don't even have a tank.
🤣
