I'm an American, so I was taught that slurping my food is very rude. I love Japanese food and I have visited many Japanese restaurants in America and Japan, so I am trying to adjust to a new version of table manners. I enjoy Kosuke's channel and it is helping me to learn more about the way things are done in Japan.
Wonder if its an American thing, in New Zealand we don't care if you slurp or don't even though we speak English, I reckon large open mouth chewing is considered more rude, i don't think anyone would want to hear meaty squishy noises.
I enjoyed ramen in Japan and in the USA but I was never sure how, exactly, to eat ramen politely. Your video shows everything and answers all of my questions. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You probably live in a city or big town, that's possible even in America, just in more rural areas. I say America because I am and I always thought "midwest nice" was a myth until I went the bigger coastal towns [Jersey and Cali being two of the three] and everyone was so inexcusably rude and sad. I'm not surprised more crime happens in big cities, peoole just go around pissing each other off 😂 Rambling aside, I came back to the midwest with new respect and a refreshed perspective.
Love the way folks are so polite. We finally have a great Ramen restaurant in my city in Canada. I go there 2-3 times per week. Shoyu is my favorite type.
Thank you for sharing! During one of my visits to Japan on business (from the US), when we were preparing to eat Ramen, my host told me that it was "OK to make a sound". I appreciated his guidance!
@@kosuke_shows_japan I love Japanese food! On a business trip to Tokyo I was invited to a wonderful Sushi dinner at the invitation of the Chairman of the Oceanography Department at Todai University. I love noodles! Now I'm hungry and want some ramen, lol. Slurping noodles doesn't bother me, any more than watching someone from a culture different from mine (American here) that eats things with their fingers that I would use a fork or spoon for. Every culture has its own traditions, and those are what makes things special.
I love the fact that you explain cultural difference, like the noodle slurping sound. When I am with my Asian friends and we go to Japanese restaurants, I feel comfortable slurping the noodles but if I go with my family, I try to be as quiet as possible because they see the slurping sound as rude. Love Ichiran ramen, didn't know the sound had to do with ramen as well! Arigato.

I started eating ramen in the late 1960's or early 1970's and didn't know there were so many ways to enjoy them until 1976 when I did my first tour in South Korea. I think most British "foodies" understand the traditional slurping of ramen and would (hopefully) not be offended, especially if done by a Japanese person.
I really enjoyed your video! I love how you provided some quick cultural background like the ramen song. Ichiran is definitely on my list. I might not be from Fukouka, or even Japan, but Tonkotsu is definitely the best ramen!
The best ramen I’ve had (yet) was in a Japanese Steakhouse in Chicago; I work for a Japanese company and my boss took me there for dinner. He explained it was Tonkatsu Ramen. I will be traveling to Japan for the first time in a few days and spending time in multiple prefectures and am looking forward to trying the ramen in each of them!

I love this restaurant. "Eating Concentration Table"...such ingenuity. I admire how orderly, clean, respectful, and authentic this restaurant is. And then there's the delicious ramen...wow. Awesome.
Your video reminded me of the time when we went to eat at Ichiran Osaka 7 years ago. I enjoyed the experience. I didn't know that the dividers could be removed until I watched your video or that you could order more at the table.
Your meal looks great and tasty. Thank you for sharing the culture involved in partaking it. The restaurant's setting is beautiful to my eyes, and the service looks great. Although I am not Asian, I do have the privilege of several such communities where I live - slurping noodles is absolutely fine, and I share your thought that noodles taste different when slurped. Thanks for sharing. Best regards from Montréal, Canada.
I'm kind of mind-blown that they allow you to order additional noodles for the remaining broth. In America, they would definitely just make you order a whole new bowl if you were still hungry. If I ever have the pleasure of visiting Japan, I would get fat because I would never just drink the remaining broth. I would just be like, "More noodles please!" until the broth was gone. 😂
It’s the same here in Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia); you can order a half serving of noodles or rice for very little money. The only problem with that is it you have to know about it it is overcooked.
I'm from sweden, it's 3am, i'm drunk and idk why but i'm watching your video... I realy liked it ! Thx for it, i'll go hopefully in japan next year as a exchange student near osaka, the city is called nishinomiya if i'm correct, i hope i will have the luck to try Icharan there ! This is an incredibly well made video, I appreciate your efforts to explain in depth of how different things are done in Japan, but this is for sure a special episode. When I go to Japan I'll be excited to try Ichiran Ramen!
Interesting to watch the differences among culture customs in different countries 👍In South America, we do not slurp, and we eat noodles with a fork and sometimes with the help of a spoon. Still, we love Ramen Noodles! 😁✌
I travelled to Japan a few years ago with a tour group. If I go again, would love to explore much more, especially the restaurants and what the Japanese enjoy eating. Making ramen dishes on my own through UA-cam...got me hooked. Thank you for you videos!!!
I am watching this before attending Aikido class and I did not eat beforehand. I am so hungry now! The Japanese food here in the US is never as good as what I experienced in Japan. Thank you for the video.
Slurping allows you to eat it hot. Slurping also aerates the noodles and broth which intensifying the flavor. Otherwise, you can let it sit and cool down that would make the noodles soggy.
There’s this amazing ramen shop down the road and I always get the tonkotsu. As a western hispanic, this slurping is also what I do when I eat noodles! :)) I love this video
Thank you for showing us how japanese people enjoy ramen. Here in the middle part of germany we dont have many restaurants where you can est good ramen, most if us only know instant ramen. I like the idea of slurping noodles, so you can eat them hot but not burn your mouth cause you suck in cold air too. For old people here it is a sign for bad behavior but for me its a sign that the food is so good that you just cant wait for it to cool down. And my mother in law is half italian, she said that italian people do slurp the spaghetti too.
I am an introvert but not a social outcast. Went there once and found the experience utterly depressing, so much so I couldn’t even finish my bowl of noddles. Will never return again; don't care how good the food is supposed to be.
Same thoughts. I don't like how everyone's secluded. Best meals that I have had and still have was due to the ambiance, and the people/interactions around me.
We usually go to New York and they have it in Time Square. Same setting and menu. The ramen is buttery and delicious. The broth is amazing. And I always get it with no salt and medium heat and oil. I’m not a ramen person but when I discovered Ichiran I’m obsessed. Love the macha pudding.
I'm an American from the United States. Loved the video. Found it very informative. I enjoy eating ramen noodles and unlike other westerners, I happen to enjoy slurping my ramen noodles. It doesn't matter whether I'm at home or out in public. I am still working on getting used to eating with chopsticks though. It just takes lots and lots of practice.
Hello Kosuke shows Japan! It's great to see your video on how Japanese people eat ramen noodles at Ichiran. With 851,673 views, it's clear that viewers are interested in Japanese culture and cuisine. Your channel sounds like a fantastic resource for those who want to learn more about Japan and its traditions. I appreciate that you're open to questions and requests, as it allows viewers to engage with your content on a deeper level. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. I'm sure many people will find your channel to be a valuable source of information and insights into Japanese culture. Keep up the great work!
It's interesting that you lived here in England for a while. We're considered 'overly polite' you might say (we say 'sorry' and 'please' a LOT), but Japanese politeness and respect is on another level. I wish we were this considerate to others over here!
The uniqueness of this type of restaurant would really be successful in the right places in the US. I would definitely visit this restaurant. That Ramen looks absolutely delicious!
If this were a thing near me, I'd go there twice a week. We have a very large Japanese community where I live and so we're blessed with authentic Japanese cuisine, too. However, the open plan in the restaurants I frequent very much promotes bringing a friend, and none of my friends are as much in love with ramen as I am. Don't want to be the one loner in the shop, so my noodle intake isn't nearly as high as I'd like it to be :') Ajitama Tonkotsu Ramen is by far my favorite. So incredibly good.
When we were in Japan we went to Ichiran many times. We're happy to hear the little tune again! We didn't know it was a recognisable ditty from ramen sellers, we thought it was Ichiran's signature chime. We actually tried to sneak that melody into the soundtrack at work for the Japanese shows 😁I wonder if anyone noticed? Greetings from London 🇬🇧🇯🇵🙏
So cool to learn about other cultures and traditions as well as etiquette like learning how to eat ramen. The ramen looks very yummy. Thanks for sharing your culture with us.
I think eating noisy shows our enjoyment of the food. But ... yes ... I live in America where I get scolded sometimes. Not invited too. Oh well ... I still love it and will not stop. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I will tell you that this is seriously the best ramen I’ve ever had. It’s so simple, but everything is so perfected-it doesn’t need any additions
Lol I feel bad for you. Their ramen is absolute trash compared to most small shops.
I love this restaurant. "Eating Concentration Table"...such ingenuity. I admire how orderly, clean, respectful, and authentic this restaurant is. And then there's the delicious ramen...wow. Awesome.
Very interesting. We Americans are so sheltered. Eating is something we all have in common. It’s cool to discover how we all enjoy it.
Omg, you really make me miss Ichiran ramen so much. It’s the must every time we go to Japan.
Yeah, must.
I love how you learned more about your culture by translating into English. I'm talking about you mentioning the mushrooms 😂
Yeah, when I try to explain something, I learn something new I was never aware of in the past.
most ramen placed in america you can order extra noodles for your remaining broth. At least all the places ive been too in NY, MA, and CT
You can order as many sides of noodles as you want for about $2-3, here in California.
Me too!
Are you sure your not just assuming that because of angst for the US?
It’s the same here in Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia); you can order a half serving of noodles or rice for very little money. The only problem with that is it you have to know about it it is overcooked.
Beauty comes in many forms, this one is in food. Thankyou for sharing.
I really enjoyed your video it was very informative and I liked learning more about your culture. Thank you!
Thx a lot i subscribed !
Oh good to know that even drunk ppl are enjoying my videos 😁
Yeah, that’s great. People in Osaka and Kansai region are funny. I bet you’ll have a good time there.
Im italian, I eat spaghetti wit h the fork and noodles whit chopstick, i dont know why, maybe is a form of respect for the food?
I travelled to Japan a few years ago with a tour group. If I go again, would love to explore much more, especially the restaurants and what the Japanese enjoy eating. Making ramen dishes on my own through UA-cam...got me hooked. Thank you for you videos!!!
I am watching this before attending Aikido class and I did not eat beforehand. I am so hungry now! The Japanese food here in the US is never as good as what I experienced in Japan. Thank you for the video.
Looks delicious 😋, I really like the private eating booths. Hi from Australia ☀️🌏
Thank you. Australia is close to Japan. Come come 😁
Slurping allows you to eat it hot. Slurping also aerates the noodles and broth which intensifying the flavor. Otherwise, you can let it sit and cool down that would make the noodles soggy.
Slurping solves everything:-)
There’s this amazing ramen shop down the road and I always get the tonkotsu. As a western hispanic, this slurping is also what I do when I eat noodles! :)) I love this video
Amazing experience. Thank you for sharing!
Wow! I never finish all my noodles when I get ramen, so I can't imagine ordering extra noodles!
Right. I ordered a medium and ate 3 meals from it.
@@tinytt854 Same !
I am an introvert but not a social outcast. Went there once and found the experience utterly depressing, so much so I couldn’t even finish my bowl of noddles. Will never return again; don't care how good the food is supposed to be.
You do you.
Same thoughts. I don't like how everyone's secluded. Best meals that I have had and still have was due to the ambiance, and the people/interactions around me.
3:10 this is great for customer churn. Meaning they eat faster without chit chat and other distractions. So you could churn more customers this way.
I want so much to visit Japan! My brother visited and fell in love with it. The Ramen looks wonderful. Thank you for showing us real life.
Something about your voice and speaking sound is so comforting. Like watching a kids program but for adults. Japanese Mr. Rogers
Great video! I love the concept and the huge attention to detail. Just a dream.
I really appreciate this education! The culture is so fascinating. I’ve never been to Japan, but really want to visit!❤

Thanks for your comment 😉 I will come back with new videos soon.
Thank you so much for sharing your culture so kindly and generously. I cannot wait to slurp ramen very soon! ❤
It's interesting that you lived here in England for a while. We're considered 'overly polite' you might say (we say 'sorry' and 'please' a LOT), but Japanese politeness and respect is on another level. I wish we were this considerate to others over here!
Thank you for uploading this and how you eat everything on the ramen. Most videos just show you how to eat the noodles.
I like how convenient that looks ,just roll in place your order take your seat and relax ☺️
How are y’all so darn healthy? You ate an insane amount of noodles but I like seeing how other cultures operate. Thank you.
The uniqueness of this type of restaurant would really be successful in the right places in the US.
I would definitely visit this restaurant.
That Ramen looks absolutely delicious!
I doubt it, people are too aggressive now days. People would be banging at the tables or shouting.
Don't want to be the one loner in the shop, so my noodle intake isn't nearly as high as I'd like it to be :')
Ajitama Tonkotsu Ramen is by far my favorite.
My grandson was in Japan last year for two weeks. He had nothing but good things to say about Japan and its people and food. Best Ramen he ever had.
Love your channel. Love Japan 🇯🇵
So cool to learn about other cultures and traditions as well as etiquette like learning how to eat ramen. The ramen looks very yummy. Thanks for sharing your culture with us.
Thanks! Learning the country’s culture and eating its food go hand in hand🥢 😋
I think eating noisy shows our enjoyment of the food. But ... yes ... I live in America where I get scolded sometimes. Not invited too. Oh well ... I still love it and will not stop.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
I love this video! It's so calming and that ramen looks fantastic! Thank you for sharing! 🥰🥰
Unbelievable how respectfully the food is served. Also a lot for only $10. Hopefully I can visit Japan someday for the sushi and culture.
I visited Fukuoka last December and enjoyed eating a lot of ramen! Tonkotsu is my favourite, and even though I loved the ramen at Ichiran and Ippudo, I visited several small ramen shops that were very good too!
