This 1969 VW Bay Window, Westfalia S067 was rescued from a field in the US and imported during the Covid Lockdown. Only now, have we been able to start the restoration and preservation process and we cant wait to take you along for the ride!

I am not a fan of the rat look and I would have liked it to be brought back to its original factory look but I still like watching what you are doing.
Thank you 🙏
Yeah the rat look is one which I absolutely love seeing but I couldn’t bring myself to have on my own van! Just wondering is the clear coat going to be matt finish or polished?
@@nickjones3222 I’ve actually polished a panel since the video was made and my mind has been made, it’s going to be glossy!
@@CombeValleyCampers I’d hoped so!🤩👍
I’ll never understand what people see in a shoddy/rusty finish but each to his own…
Keep the patina it’s part of its story, I spent hours and hours reviving the paint on my 74 Westy that came over from Colorado.Every dent and scratch is part of it’s life. And I don’t have to worry about it get scratched when parked like I would have if I had it painted.
This bus is going to be awesome. Looking at the white OG paint I’m not sure it’s Pearl white. I have a Pearl white 70 westy (decoded from the mplate / US delivery information) that I am also exposing the original paint and it’s much less bright white. I’m wondering if it could be Lotus white? Thought I’d mention it being worth another check before you order touch up paint :) Keep up the good work!
Car-cheology note: Georgia Tech's school colors are gold & white. So maybe the top was painted yellow to create those colors. (IDK much about auto paint, but could a red component of an original gold color have faded?)
Keep as much of the original paint it’s looking amazing. After the rust and paint remover what to you apply to protect the revealed paint ?
At the end of the day this is your bus - it doesnt matter what others think of your plans for it, if you feel like keeping it as rat-look thats your choice, if you change to a full resto thats still your choice - make it a bus you like/want not what you think the world wants you to make/have
I'm fully behind the patina look - it gives me a great excuse to not bother too much with tidying up the bodywork on my van...
Not the first time I’ve heard that since starting the project! Thanks for watching
Totally agree leave the look. Just make it “new” underneath.
I’m amazed that you simply didn’t send it to the stripping bath. But, as others have pointed out, it’s going to be all the more interesting to see the process and end results 👍
It seems bonkers really but I believe it’s got a real story to tell and I want to preserve it :)
Re spray, not a fan of the rat look. But it’s your van and I’ll watch the content either way 😁
😮 so much work.
so happy we didn't had so much rust for our old Mercedes 😅
How long do you think the renovation will take?
I’d love to be able to take it to Newquay ‘run to the sun’ 2024!
Honestly, I'd be having a good DA session, and be bringing out the spot blaster! However, saying that... what you did taking the paint back to original does make it look like a different van and one worth saving :)
Thank you 🙏
I must admit I’m not a fan of the patina look I’d rather respray it🏴👍
I must admit it’s not for everyone!
Couple of weekends work 😂 should look good when done.
Can't wait for more!
Why not start with a pressure washer?
Oh I did! It removed the grime layer but you saw how much effort it took to remove the rust and blue, the pressure washer would have been no match!
MHO: Respraying would be a work of craft (& there is nothing wrong with good craftsmanship). Taking it back to the OG paint & keeping the patina is a work of art.
The rat bus look is awesome. I can’t wait to see this finished. So lucky with that patina. Hopefully a nice clear coat on it.
Personally I would prefer to see the inside gutted. More of a clean day van set up with some beautiful worn brown leather bench seats and a nice sound system.
Hi love the CLR could you put a link for this product
Hi Paul, we don't sell it directly but if you enter CLR cleaner into amazon it will come straight up. Leigh
respray please i think the bus deserves a good make over but each to their own but cannot wait to see the end result,we`ve retired now and thing of getting a camper any advice would be nice
this is labor of love. there is no waste of time.
I want to se how you treat or fill up the parts that are completely eaten away by rust. if you are going to weld in metal parts for that for a better structure durability. go for spray paint green and yellow
Yes it's worth bringing back the original paint, it'll look great when finished .
Great video, can't wait to watch the job progressing 👍 Another bus being saved
Bro love that your saving this when most would save it's too far gone. Can't wait to see your plans for it ❤
I love a patina as long as it's real. Going to look great in the end 👍
I very nearly kept it as it is, but it was worth the effort to get the paint work as it is now
I dont like the single colour so id of repainted it two tone
Later Westfalia conversions commonly came in a two tone, but if I was to repaint it, I’d stay the og paint :)
the german word for close is verriegeln 😉👍
Thank you 🙏 I did have trouble reading it on the door!
I think you’re doing the right thing by not respraying tbh 😎
Wow. Love your dedication and commitment! Will you use a rust neutraliser type thing before the lacquer?
I’m not sure. I will take advice from others who have done it before when it comes to the final finish
You have the patience of a saint rubbing that down......threaders knowing you got the rest of the van to do 🙈
The satisfaction is so high, I look forward to doing more!
Loads of satin clear coat?
I think we will go gloss. I polished the door panel and it looked great so I think that how we’re gonna play it
I have a pair of quarterlight glasses from a 74 bay I think they are the same only problem is one of them has been etched with a reg no.
Thank you for getting in touch! I will keep them in mind :) Leigh
Episode 2 pleeeeease :)
It’s coming
Great project! I cant't wait to see the progress. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
This is going to look awesome! Looking forward to following your progress 👍
Thanks! 👍
She's a thing of beauty - I wouldn't hide the scars.
I have tried out Evaporust recently, the liquid one you soak stuff in - it's blown my tiny mind. I tried it out on some super crusty spanners and all sorts of stuff. Drop the thing in, leave it a day or more, take it out, rinse it off - no rust left 🤯.
It wouldn't work for what you're doing as it doesn't touch the paint, but they do make a gel which I think you can use on body panels and stuff. I need a big flat rusty thing so I can buy some and try it out 😂
I’ve seen the results of evaporite on another channel I watch. It’s like a magic liquid!
@@CombeValleyCampers That's what amazed me, zero work or burnt skin, the rust just goes away and no good metal or paint is removed. I kept going and finding more stuff to put in just to see what it did - although I think I need to find a new hobby - I've used up 5 litres of the stuff now 🤣
Patina, battle scars and all. 👍
It’s a look I love!
@CombeValleyCampers at least it'll be a van that can be used and not worry about who's parking next to it because it may get scratched
Looks so good under that blue paint! 🤌
Thank you 🙏
Respray but it’s your van not mine👍
It crossed my mind for a second, but when I saw how much original paint remains, I’ve decided to keep going!
Quality intro can't wait to see more
Thank you!
Great content, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
