I wanted to mention another supporting actor - Don Calfa (Pauli) as one of those character actors whom I forgot was in so many watchable movies. Without good supporting actors - the leads have no one to bounce off of. There appears to be a serious lack of natural charisma today.
I've heard a lot of people say Weekend At Bernies 2 is terrible, but I absolutely love it. This one brings back some good memories watching it with my dad when it came out in VHS. Also, you guys are the very first ones that I've seen react to this movie. Much love for that!! Love you guys.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Thank you guys! You hardly see ANYONE react to this classic. Ya'll def need to watch the sequel too. I used to watch both of them all the time as a kid. Asia, you making us BOTH feel old today! 😂😂😉 Love you guys!
Weekend at Bernie's, Weekend at Bernie's 2, and Drop Dead Fred was some of my favorite movies to watch in the early 90s. I associate these 3 movies together because there was a local own video rental place and I remember my oldest sister rented them all at the same time. Man those was some good time back in my early childhood.
@@tinabenton3643 well I do love w good movie. Especially the ones from back when I was young. I should know because in my bedroom I have a 5ft wide mounted wall shelf with 6 rows of DVDs stacked nearly 3ft high with with 3 more rows of DVDs stacked in front of the 6 rows. My VHS collection is double that.
The guy who played Bernie did most of his own stunts, with the exception of times they had to use a dummy like with the speedboat. Between this and the sequel, he completely sells the act of being dead through sheer force of will and an immense amount of pain. Every slap, every fall, every tumble...

lol came here just for BJ’s comments and Asia’s contagious laugh. Don’t feel old, I definitely remember this movie always came on tv regularly. I was a youngster when this came out but have seen it so many times since. Lol
Great reaction you two. Terry Kiser, Bernie, doesn't get enough credit for his acting in this movie. Imagine how difficult it is to act dead. Staying limp, not reacting to anything the other actors do. I am sure it was a very hard role to play. Much love and keep on keepin on J.
My mom basically gave me and my sisters her childhood lol while we were watching Drake and Josh and aquamarine we were also watching Grease, weekends at Bernies, footloose all the classics 😂
Yep, my mom did the same. I grew up with the same Millennial era shows like Drake & Josh, but I also watched a ton of Muppets and classic 80’s movies like The Goonies, Stand By Me, and The Princess Bride.
it's one of the big reasons why I come to their channel, aside from the warm, approachable, environment they create with their reactions! Please please please react to the second movie too! I consider it kind of better than the first one.
My dad would ALWAYS take me to a movie on the weekends, even if it wasn't one I asked to see. I didn't mind cause it ment nachos and🍿 I was 6 @the time so a lot of the adult material went over my head. I can still see my dad sitting next to me, laughing his hysterical laugh😆 while Richard pulls Bernie in the wagon, and the channel marker gongs🌊💥🔔 This remains one of my beloved 80s gems and still makes me laugh every time. Best childhood EVER. See both of u laugh like this took me right back to that memory, thank u 4that 💖
Was just talking about this movie. How ridiculously funny it is & I believe it holds up. You really need to suspend reality for this but they pulled it off spectacularly. Terry Kieser ( Bernie) was amazing & one of my favorite character actors who has been on so many things since the 70’s. Another crazy silly movie worth checking is “Look Who’s Talking” ‘88 Bruce Willis, John Travolta & recently deceased, late, great Kirstie Ally. 👍🍿🥂
filmed on Bald Head Island in NC. I used to work there. Had to take a ferry to work every day. No cars there, just golf carts. It still looks similar to how it did in the movie here.
This was the first movie I was allowed to go see in a (mostly empty) theater alone with friends (11-12 years old). We were shrieking with laughter at the boat part. Was funny enough on its own but we kept feeding off each other’s laughter. Tears and stomach cramps were worth it. This isn’t the most amazing movie I’ve ever seen, by far, but it sure was a good time and it gave me a great memory to cherish!
I was in the Navy back in '89 and saw this movie on the big screen in a theater in San Diego. I was 22 yrs old at the time. I'll bet BJ wasn't anywhere near 22 at that time. You're still a young man BJ. Don't ever think of yourself as old.
I was raised in St. Thomas, USVI and they filmed the sequel there! The entire island was soo excited about it. I snuck into morning star resort to try and see some filming but we got kicked out. I was only 11. 😂 so much nostalgia watching these.
Omg finally someone react to this movie. Its was ahead of its time it felt 90s. I Alway watch this during the Summer as a tradition. Fun fact: Skeet Ulrich appears in the background in the party. Growing up me and my two friends used to reenact Weekend at Bernie's. We would get an empty pellet gun with the Co2 cartridge in it so it would sound like a gun. We would stand on the edge of a street with traffic going by. I would shoot the pellet gun and one of my friends would go down. Then me and the other friend would pick him up and we would put him between us and we would start running while he played limp with a smile on his face.
A late 80s comedy classic that never gets old. Always great for some laughs. Silverman and McCarthy had great chemistry and made a good comedy duo. Hard to believe this was directed by the guy who directed First Blood.
Omg I haven't seen this since I was a kid! It was one of my absolute favorites, and was probably a good representation of what my sense of humor was like, lol. I still laughed my face off! So glad you reacted to this and enjoyed it! Ahh, the '80s were a different time....
The comedy movies from the 80s are so good! Please also check out, if you haven't already, Mannequin (also stars Andrew McCarthy), Adventures in Babysitting, Uncle Buck, Weird Science, and The Golden Child (Eddie Murphy).
Please react to part 2. It is frowned upon by many, but i LOVE the second part even more than the first one: Weekend at Bernies II (1993... with the same cast: yes, all three!)
If I am not mistaken… perhaps the ferry scene was a nod to High Anxiety in which Mel Brooks wanted to film a scene like that but it would’ve been to expensive at the time.
Me & my mom used to call the actor who plays Bernie "Linguini and clam sauce" because of this one episode of "Three's Company" he was on. I was raised to be weird. ☺️
Great call on Weekend At Bernie’s! If you want the only 90’s movie that better then please check out Captain Ron! By far Kurt Russell’s best performance! He should have won an Oscar! 😂
Me and my mates used to love this movie back in the day. Damn, this brings back such nostalgia. A seriously funny film. Not to sound old but, 'They don't make 'em like they used to', lol 😉
Don’t let Asia make you feel weird for knowing this movie. She’s the weird one, this was like a huge movie back then. I remember this movie even though I was like 5 when it came out. It was everywhere and the premise of the movie has remained a cult phenomena, like everyone knows who Bernie was in this context.
Our son went to school out of state w/ HS best friend & spent a lot of time in Florida during the summer with friends & his retired grandparents............ MY WIFE ALWAYS SAID THAT SILVERMAN & MCCARTHY COULD HAVE PASSED FOR TWINS OF OUR SON & HIS HS FRIEND DURING THIS PERIOD OF THEIR LIVES. In their 20s, our son & his friend acted just like these 2 in this movie
The vacuuming and toupee stapling always gets me. This is probably my mom’s favorite comedy. No matter how many times she sees it, she is in tears with laughter.
I feel old. I still remember the first time I saw the scene of Bernie being dragged behind the boat hitting the channel markers. Puts me in tears every time I see it😂
This is a fun blast from the 80s. Fun facts, Bernies stunt double suffered multiple broken ribs shooting the film and Bernies house on the beach isnt a real home. It was built specifically for the movie. Thanx for the laughs, I needed that. Peace
Mary Catherine Stewart is in a really cute fun movie set in the 50’s called Mischief. It also stars Kelly Preston who was John Travolta’s wife and Jamie Gertz who was in Twister and The Lost Boys. You guys would enjoy it, also had a great oldies soundtrack.
"Weekend at Bernie's" came on a lot on HBO. I always watched the beginning and ending. I end up missing/skipped the 'dead' middle for some reason. What I did watch all the time were/are funny.
I love this movie! Still makes me laugh. Glad it made you guys laugh just as much. Other classic comedies you need to watch are: Animal House, Porky's, Sixteen Candles, and Uncle Buck.
Little tidbit: The man who plays Richard Parker's father ... or the "butler"... in the parent's apartment scene on 12:24 is the movie's director, Ted Kotcheff.
One of the best comedies of the 80s. Remember watching this at the cinema and people were in stitches when Bernie goes water skiing and they have the fly swotter as well. Andrew McCarthy was of course one of the brat pack and very famous back then. Terry Kiser was just brilliant playing the dead Bernie. A great fun watch.
Lol....I legit haven't watched this in 30 years lol.....love it. Awesome reaction Also you should definitely add Mannequin (1987) to your list. Y'all will love it

Weekend at Bernies 2 is just as nuts but just as funny. It was my favorite out of the two. Great reaction and I haven't seen this since I was a kid. Definitely check out the 2nd movie. Can't believe, even to this day, the actor who played as "Bernie" was still playing as Bernie dead, even in the 2nd movie. lol . (a dummy was replaced in obvious scenes). lol
Love this movie! Saw it in the 80’s and was an instant hit for me! The 2 actors were HUGE movie stars at the time. Andrew Macarthy was a staple in movies in the 80’s. Great actor and still is. You should watch the film “FALCON & THE SNOWMAN” BASED on a true story about govt employee who decided to sell secrets to the enemies and all the little stories in between. This film also stars Andrew McCarthy and it’s more serious type of film and is acting really shines in this movie. Anyway, check it out if you get a chance and react to it. Anyway, I’m so glad that you got to see weekend at Bernie’s! Now it’s time to watch “WEEKEND AT BERNIES PART II.”
I remember when I first saw it. Too young when it came out. So a few years later. Had me wheeze and cough laughing. Meant to add. Highly sugges the sequel. Bernie grooves to the music.
Now I want to see you both do the Bernie dance. Did you know there are many music videos or videos in general moving like Bernie, even flash mobs. Lols
If you had HBO in the early nineties there's no way you would not know about this movie. The only, and I mean only way someone would not know about this who was alive back then would be if they did not have HBO. This is one of those movies that they would rotate constantly because it was so funny and so popular everybody just kept watching it again and again. Fortunately I had HBO growing up and I'm so glad I did because of classics like this. Andrew McCarthy in general was pretty popular back in the day so mannequin was another movie they would constantly be playing..... Also don't forget about weekend at Bernie's too which is almost as funny.... Not quite but definitely its own unique hilarity as well so I would suggest people do a double feature with both of these gems cuz they are both excellent.
OMG, I love this movie. Very hilarious and enjoyed your reaction to this. I hope you watch Weekend at Bernies 2. Cannot wait to see your reaction to that one.
If you ever have time, check out the sitcom Night Court episode "Mac's Dilemma", it aired about a year before this with an almost similar premise. Also, the late country singer Joe Diffie shot a Weekend at Bernie's inspired video for his song "Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die)", which led to a running gag of having the dead guy appear in several later videos.
Terry Kiser (Bernie) *genuinely* deserved an Oscar nod for his performance.
I wanted to mention another supporting actor - Don Calfa (Pauli) as one of those character actors whom I forgot was in so many watchable movies. Without good supporting actors - the leads have no one to bounce off of. There appears to be a serious lack of natural charisma today.

You could say that he was stiffed.
Robert Downing Jr. can replay his role as Bernie if they ever did a remake of this movie!

Largely filmed in NC! I live about 30 minutes from this beach, not counting the ferry.
A classic, fun comedy. Watched this probably 100 times growing up
I remember when I first saw it.
This movie has always given me a grin, and you saw why. Thanks for the fun.
Asia and BJ you guys are awesome for reacting to this movie, and Matthew you are awesome for recommending it💜💜
Absolutely love this movie..what a classic..seen it 100 times love part 2 too
One of my favorite movies, it's so funny. They also made a second one.
Weekend at Bernie's is one of the funniest movies ever made, it's a classic.
