I think a spin-off based around previous companions would be a great idea. That scene towards the end of 'Power Of The Doctor' with the companions support group? Imagine a series about companions, old and new, teamed up in various combinations, doing their best to investigate strange goings-on in the Doctors absence. Some of them aren't working all that much (but are fine performers), could be a fun thing? Also, 'Ncuti Gatwa is already a massive star'? Really? I would wager most people had never heard of him until he was announced as the new Doctor. And I say that as a fan of 'Sex Education' but that's sort of a cult show.
Ryan Gosling is a huge star but he's also one of those people I can see doing something just because it's fun or he enjoys the show. Like when Jon Hamm did 'Black Mirror'. I'm sure he and Ncuti talked while making 'Barbie' and Ryan thought it sounded like something he'd enjoy.
I'm looking forward to this new era and I think it's a very exciting time but I don't think Doctor Who has EVER had a golden age nor will it ever and that's due to the show changing so much in terms of format, style etc. It is so different every time and every era is very important and special to a lot of people! I think it's one of those shows that is evergreen!
Have you ever known a globally popular science fiction and comedy television show to last 60 years and beyond? I it more as a diamond rather than a golden era and to be able to stream it on Disney+ on November 23rd this year makes Doctor Who even more amazing.
Glad I have been WFH this week, a new pop up Doctor Who channel is on Foxtel in Australia, I have had it playing all week. Watched everything since 2005 upto Matt Smith's run. Forgot how many great actors have had a role on Who.
I'd really like some new Torchwood. Like Star Trek that show can have a whole new crew and just keep on going. It could also be set in many different time periods.
It will be cool to see Doctor-Who come back as the show you sit down and watch with the family. I did that as a kid and Im 22. To me it was a British tradition, especially the Christmas special. Absolutely chuffed their back.
Keep in mind when Ellie makes this nonsense claim that she HATES Jenna Coleman for some reason, so she certainly couldn't include her. As far as I'm concerned if any assistant is incredibly over-rated, it's the utter annoyance that is CatherineTate.
@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 In another video, she made it clear she didn't like Clara. I think Clara was quite possibly the best assistant of all time (at least in modern Who) and agree about Martha Jones. We'll have to agree to disagree about River Song, who I adore, in part because she did bring some actual adult sensuality. I also love the Paternosters, Strax for the wonderful humour, and Jenny and Vastra for the kick arse sexuality.
@triplejazzmusicisall1883 I liked the Paternostner gang & Clara. She was more suited to the 11th Doctor then 12s. My least favourite companions are Turlough. The writers had not a lot for him to do after the Guardian trilogy, Peri winged a lot & Yaz and Ryan.
So now that we've #SAVEDStarTrekProdigy, we're free and clear to get overexcited about Doctor Who. No more splitting our attention. Good timing, that. I like Christmas specials. Not sure how to explain any better than: It feels right. I may be prejudiced, since whether there's a special or not, I will be watching Eleven's Christmas Carol. Again. Like every year. The "Something borrowed, something blue" scene has its own special lobe in my brain. I think about it a lot. We're getting spinoffs. Great googly moogly, we're getting spinoffs. That's very exciting. I seem calm. I'm not. Gap years: I hate to be a downer, but I will believe that when I see it. I've heard it before, and there's always a convenient excuse. I want to be wrong. I want everyone to dance around me, chanting and singing about how I was wrong. That would be a good day. Also, before I forget: THE SPECIALS ARE NEXT MONTH!!! I'm vibrating so hard, I can pass through solid objects like the Flash. Thanks, y'all. I need a nap.
Ellie, I was thinking .. there is two lines thay may connect. 1. the guardians of the ledge stated " we have to go to someone outside" and 2. 14 says he's not a believer of Destiny , but if true its heading for Donna Nobel... what if the Outside person is Donna and she pulled the 10th now 14th doctor into this to defeat the Toymaker??
The long gaps between Doctor Who series has always been my pet peeve. I felt the same with Sherlock (though those episodes were almost feature film length). Having a limited number of episodes every year (less than US tv series at 20 but more than a "mini series" of 3) would be awesome if they can pull it off. I know that some of the premiere streaming series have a brutal shooting/post production schedule. Can't wait for Gatwa's turn as The Doctor. The Sex Education episodes centred on his character were some of my favorites!
Actually I think Chrimast 2024 is being filmed as we speak. Yes 2023's Xmas special has already been filmed a long time ago. And season 15 will be too at least they decided to filmed the Christmas special first which would make sense.
One minor point - I believe (and am happy to be corrected) that Ncuti has never commented on his sexuality publicly - he certainly appears to have characteristics that would normally be identified as gay (or "queer" as the report says) and his major hit has been as a gay character but he's kept his own sexuality away from the public eye. I'm not for a moment suggesting I know whether or not he's gay - just that for the record, he doesn't seem to have commented either way.
I only hope that while the show gets bigger it doesn’t lose sight of what it had. As of now with RTD that’s a very small concern but the future is always unknown.
As American here BBC America was not free required a cable or satellite subscription which can be anywhere between 50 to 150 dollars a month .(depending on state and provider taxes and if bbc is even in there basic lineup) Disney Plus much affordable option.
For the record, BBC America was not free. You needed a rather robust cable or satellite subscription to watch it. Free channels in the U.S. are things like ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS as well as a couple of UHF stations. I’m personally glad Doctor Who’s going to Disney+ because I ditched cable for streaming long ago. Even when I did have cable, I had the basic package and didn’t get BBC America.
“ more spin-offs could only be a good thing” how did that work out for Disney? Arguably the spinoffs devalued the whole of the IP. Surely enough damage has been done to Doctor Who by the Chibnall Whitaker years without following the Star Wars Disney playbook.
There is also the possibility that Disney will start to influence the content. By controlling the international audience they will have that temptation.
Peter Davidson’s Doctor had Adric, Teagan and Nyssa. Patrick Troughton’s Doctor had Ben, Polly and Jamie. Honorable mention to Tom Baker who had Adric, Romana and K9 then last episode still had Adric, Teagan and Nyssa. I thought all worked well as 4 people teams.
I've commented this on your videos before but I'll say it again, the Disney deal is AMAZING for American fans. It's going to save us so much money. BBC America has always been behind an obscene paywall. I'm absolutely ecstatic that, for the first time ever, I'm going to be able to watch Doctor Who for free, because of course I already subscribe to Disney+. For years I've had to open up subscription for no less than $80 a month just to watch the show. But no more baby
Same! I had sporadic access to BBC America and couldn’t pay for it myself back then, so I had to rent dvds from the library, pay for individual digital episodes on Amazon, even go over to a friends house to watch them. Even then I struggled to keep up with 12 and 13 as they aired. So I’m so so grateful Disney+ will be an option from now on!
bloody hell $80 a month as much as i like doctor who why on earth would poeple pay that its awfully expensive and just a stupid price a year understandable a month no i wouldnt pay that
Behind a paywall for a previously "free" program makes a show dead to me. Oh, well... BTW, for all the nitpickers/whiners, I meant "free" as in broadcast or basic cable (that you buy anyway, and is usually ad-supported for its channels like Sci-Fi), as opposed to add-on premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc.). I think that streaming is going to pick us to death for individual "exclusive" series (like Paramount tried with "Picard", before they added the full Star Trek library). Amazon, AppleTV, etc. Just strangle that golden goose, Hollywood... I want my old analog TV signal and my rabbit ears, so I can get my independent UHF stations (where TV syndication used to live) in my inside apartment/basement (I still have a roll of aluminum foil ready)... ;-P
the US carrying of Doctor Who wasnt always on BBC America. in Classic Who it was on PBS, then for New Who it was first on SciFi Channel (later rebranded SyFy) and then to BBC America, then AMC and Amazon Prime. Also since the US is firmly in the Post-Cable era, Disney+ is one of the few streamers that nearly everyone has.
The new series 1-13 is already on a streaming service here in the US. I watch it on Max (formerly HBOMax. It keeps changing its name). I'm not sure whether Disney will only be the exclusive home of new episodes from November on. Disney likes exclusive deals, so Doctor Who might be removed from Max in November. IDK.
I'm on the edge of optimistic and pessimistic for the shows future. The nostalgia influx is fine for the 60th, but the fact that Christmas Specials and Murray Gold are back makes me worry that we're going to be getting RTD's style of serialized seasons... Which was great when it was new and when it was the early 2000s, but started falling when Moffat took the helm and crashed when reintroduced by Chibs timeless child fiasco. RTD's initial serialized story telling set a precedent that's proven deadly for showrunners, and that's the expectation of having some series long arc. So rather than focus on individual episodes, character arcs, etc. producers and writers are essentially forcing themselves to focus on unnecessary arcs that can be great when good, but absolutely terrible when producers are left scraping the bottom of their mental barrel. We don't need energy wasted making season long arcs every season. We need a return to episodic seasons, where there's no build up to a finale. Just casual adventures with character arcs being the only thing carried across episodes. That way each story can be fleshed out and given the attention they need. Plus it gets stale after awhile. Now, nostalgia is great in adequate measurements. Don't get me wrong, the 60th Special Looks fantastic, but that's an anniversary special... It's supposed to be nostalgia heavy. I really hope that they pull back on it for this upcoming series, because when Chibnall went heavy on the nostalgia after not giving any, the story nose dived. And quite frankly, given the return to old musical stylings, RTD, and all... I think it's a much deeper issue than too much nostalgia coming... They are going to techniques that may have worked in the past, but will likely not land well as time moves forward. The new Doctor and crew is certainly a step in the right direction, so is the new writer, but Gold needs to go after the special, musical motifs need to be made anew, if had at all, and we need more experimental ideas. My biggest fear though is the increased budget. Doctor Who wasn't made as a high budget show, and it wasn't really intended to be high budget. Alot of the success comes from the limited creativity that comes from budget restrictions. It creates real life problems that can lead to interesting plot directions. Plus the cheese moments may be garish to some, but are certainly a treat to others. Point being, if RTD really is going to usher in a golden era, then Gold needs to be gone after the special, stories need to cultivate a sense distinct from the first RTD era, the seasons need to be episodic, runtime needs extending, and for crying outloud, the series better have that right balance or the special is going to be a marvelous crown jewel of all that was once glorious to a slow decline into a second hiatus. Change can be good, good change is necessary for the shows long term survival, and it's what we need more than ever. But thus far it seems little evidence points to that with a show that will likely be the '05 series all over again. It was certainly great in '05, and rewatching them with that context is great... But there's a reason RTD left once. There's only so much one person can bring to the table. He may have found some new ideas in his time elsewhere, but I can't imagine it's enough to stave off from a gradual decrease in quality overtime. He could surprise me and have plenty of new ideas, but I don't think that's why the BBC brought him back, and it's not going to be good in the long run as the knee-jerk reaction to Chibs era can't be fixed with nostalgia. It can only be solved by moving forward and innovating.
Meanwhile in Ireland nothing but crickets.. Looks like I’ll have to just buy all the dvds-Blu-ray after all. Shame it’s a four hour drive to the nearest dvd shop🤦🏼♂️
I will wait and see what happens with the new Doctor, before making a judgement. Everyone said how good it would be with Chibnall and Whittaker and just look at the shambles that turned into.
The one issue I am having right now with the Disney plus thing is their lack of marketing for the show. There is nothing on their app for doctor who. Even if it was a coming soon place holder. The trailer isn’t on there either. I want to see some marketing for it. I know they can’t do actor stuff right now with the continued strike but they could use things like trailers and place holders. Come on this is why the Disney deal was supposed to be in place to reach more people.
"Golden Age." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 So Dr. Who transformed into a bland white lesbian who completely tore to shreds the origins of The Time Lords vis a vis The Timeless Child. Now to fix this they have hired a man who aspires to be the Scorcese of Alternative Cinema. Dr. Who is now Scottish, Gay, Black, a Fashionista and a Millennial. There is no box left to tick. His companion is the youngest ever, a blonde teenager and their nemesis will be an Army of Drag Queens!!!!!!! If the general audience revolted last series, now they will riot and the BBC studios will get an extreme makeover innit.
how did you not mention derek Jacobi one of the best actors in the UK ? ok maybe more theatre than TV but defo should of had a mention when talking about famous actors being in Dr WHo
sarah jane adventures was so good! i feel like the purpose of the show was an introduction of doctor who to kids where the parents could watch it too bc they would have all grown up watching sarah jane and the 3rd/4th dr. such a great idea!
Going forward, I was hoping for Tilda Swinton. Don't get me wrong, Ncuti Gatwa will bring a different vibe to the show, but I wanted Tilda Swinton to bring some real gravitas to the idea of a female Doctor Who, which, sadly, Jodie wasn't able to fully encapsulate until much later in her era.
The writer said something important...it's always been the little show that could. Apple railed against "the man" and drew in creatives and outcasts and then it became big business itself and lost its uniqueness. Dr. Who trying to be mainstream because what's good can be made better in an attempt to make more money feels like a really bad idea. Add to Disney has messed up so many amazing franchises over the years I'm dubious about what we'll see going forward. But there are some amazing people like Davies, Tennant, and Gatwa to look forward to. Whittaker is a good actress but under her, the franchise was nearly killed off. I don't blame her, it was again an attempt to make the little show that could go mainstream. I'm cautiously optimistic but as an old fan who stopped watching during the Whittaker years, I'm also not holding my breath that going mainstream is the right answer. 🤞
I just want escapism, adventure, wit, heart, The Doctor smiling at danger and asking, what have you got? I just want to feel like I did when I first saw the 7th Doctor, that wide eyed wonder and not knowing what's coming, God damn I cannot wait for the new series.
I agree with all of this. However, I would just like to point out that BBC America is not free in America. To get the channel you have to pay for a cable package, which can run over $150 a month. To get it elsewhere you still had to pay for an app.
if your reasoning is that Gatwa is the perfect casting because hes gay and a black survivor of a war in Africa, then you are the problem with doctor who. It's his acting as the doctor that will see if he is perfect casting, not any other show hes been in and that we will have to see. Of course you also told us years ago that Shittaker was perfect casting, so your track record seems to suck anyways.
so problem 1 doubling down on rep[resentation isn't going to bring a golden age. thats exactly what killed it in the first place. Second disney is becoming less popular and less profitable every day. being on disney pluss only is going to cost doctor who viiewers.

Keep this quote in your back pocket for possible use:
"Why did it have to be THIS?!" ;-P
I'm looking forward to this new era and I think it's a very exciting time but I don't think Doctor Who has EVER had a golden age nor will it ever and that's due to the show changing so much in terms of format, style etc. It is so different every time and every era is very important and special to a lot of people! I think it's one of those shows that is evergreen!
Have you ever known a globally popular science fiction and comedy television show to last 60 years and beyond? I it more as a diamond rather than a golden era and to be able to stream it on Disney+ on November 23rd this year makes Doctor Who even more amazing.
@@Roger709Bautista14 Oh it is no doubt remarkable!
The show doesn't change... it regenerates... ;-P
@@igorschmidlapp6987 so does the TARDIS interior when the Doctor regenerates inside her... 😋😁

Glad I have been WFH this week, a new pop up Doctor Who channel is on Foxtel in Australia, I have had it playing all week. Watched everything since 2005 upto Matt Smith's run. Forgot how many great actors have had a role on Who.
2:59 Not irrelevant at all, Ellie! Your mention just brought me happy tears :)
I want more of the 14th doctor we have only just got him
I still want a Spin Off with the Paternoster Gang🥰
Oh yes. Though they do have a audio spin off on Big Finish. Love the Paternoster Gang
Note BBC America has never been free to air and is part of more expensive cable packages
I am happy that they brought back Christmas. 💖😊
I disagree that 10 & Donna are the best Tardis team ever, certainly one of the best, 4 & Sarah are the best.
Agree 💯👍 and I quite liked 3 and Jo Grant too 😎🤩💪
Keep in mind when Ellie makes this nonsense claim that she HATES Jenna Coleman for some reason, so she certainly couldn't include her. As far as I'm concerned if any assistant is incredibly over-rated, it's the utter annoyance that is CatherineTate.
@@neilcam I heartily agree. Donna was just another version of Catherine most used character type - gobby woman of indeterminate age.
Golden Age right up until someone utters “Don’t you think RTD looks tired?”
I actually saw the Christmast special with the 11 Doctor (when the Tardis is used to cook the turkey) and then I've been watching since then.
Ellie, we love ur "LITTLE THOUGHTS"😂❤😊
Murray Gold returning??? F@@K YEAH!!!
BBC America was actually not free-to-air. It was often if not always only included with premium cable packages.
@@christinewhoytChristmas*; Series* 15.
As American here BBC America was not free required a cable or satellite subscription which can be anywhere between 50 to 150 dollars a month .(depending on state and provider taxes and if bbc is even in there basic lineup)
Disney Plus much affordable option.
What no firesticks?
For the record, BBC America was not free. You needed a rather robust cable or satellite subscription to watch it. Free channels in the U.S. are things like ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS as well as a couple of UHF stations. I’m personally glad Doctor Who’s going to Disney+ because I ditched cable for streaming long ago. Even when I did have cable, I had the basic package and didn’t get BBC America.
My Directv subscription was not "robust" but still included BBCA and a lot of other things I watched. I'm not inclined to pay the Disney+ assessment.
“ more spin-offs could only be a good thing” how did that work out for Disney?
Arguably the spinoffs devalued the whole of the IP. Surely enough damage has been done to Doctor Who by the Chibnall Whitaker years without following the Star Wars Disney playbook.
Yeah... I'm still very concerned about the very high possibility of international censorship that may come with the Disney+ deal 😑😓
Yeah, that's one of the problem but there's always doing it the illegal way although that might end up shooting down Doctor who.
No, The Fifth Doctor sucks with all his bad companions.
@@mayotango1317 your opinion. He inherited his companions from fourth doctor. And I enjoyed them.
@@stacyp2186 True, but right at the end of the 4th Doctor as he was leaving and Baker did not seem interested anymore.
BBC America has never been a free-to-watch channel. There has been no free Doctor Who since the classic series was broadcast on public television.
Some PBS stations around the US, like mine out of Dallas, aired current episodes as they could get them until about 10 years ago.
So I’m so so grateful Disney+ will be an option from now on!
bloody hell $80 a month as much as i like doctor who why on earth would poeple pay that its awfully expensive and just a stupid price a year understandable a month no i wouldnt pay that
i mean, some of us have always watched it for free
My golden era for doctor who ended with calpaldi leaving...thinking tennant will be great back again, but im not vibing with what comes next we'll see
I agree. It's become a very different program, especially after trashing much of what was accepted canon.
I want a sequel show to sja with the kids now adults it'd be sad with our Sarah Jane but couple be an awesome thing
It better be m rated and able to watch in Australia I can’t find the other seasons
I want my old analog TV signal and my rabbit ears, so I can get my independent UHF stations (where TV syndication used to live) in my inside apartment/basement (I still have a roll of aluminum foil ready)... ;-P

Thank you for hyping me up! November can't come soon enough!
"Perfect casting"? Well, that DEFINITELY remains to be seen...
Yeah saying perfect when not seen yet is no more then just guessing. Lets wait and see when we can watch him in action then we will see if is any good
the US carrying of Doctor Who wasnt always on BBC America. in Classic Who it was on PBS, then for New Who it was first on SciFi Channel (later rebranded SyFy) and then to BBC America, then AMC and Amazon Prime. Also since the US is firmly in the Post-Cable era, Disney+ is one of the few streamers that nearly everyone has.
This is the third age of doctor who, the first being classic who, the second when it came back and the third is with David tennant coming back
Yk hes just back for an episode?
Christmas specials, new adventures/planets/aliens, (hopefully) new merchandise and new Whoculture videos 😍
Disney will most definitely have an American spin off most likely with a group of kids as the leads like Sarah Jane Adventures
IDK.
There's a long delay. I watched The Power of the Doctor on HBO/Max 5-6 months after it aired. And of course I knew how it ended already.
@@GraceLapointe11 As I heard look ABC (which the Australian platform, it's their case)
There used to be a time when the Doctor was on every week, not every year. I miss that.
And when was that?
@@mrdr0161 the 70's

Everyone said how good it would be with Chibnall and Whittaker and just look at the shambles that turned into.
Doctor really scraped through the Chibnall era and went "RETURN TO PREVIOUS SAVE!! RETURN THE PREVIOUS SAVE!!"
At this point all I can say is get on with it already! And thanks to RTD for no more gap years. Finally! Cheers....
"Golden Age."
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
So Dr.
I love this channel
Murray Gold!!! ♥
If Disney is involved in production then I wouldn't get your hopes up.
how did you not mention derek Jacobi one of the best actors in the UK ? ok maybe more theatre than TV but defo should of had a mention when talking about famous actors being in Dr WHo
OMG an honest to god real series!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I was looking forward to the new doctor but now I'm not so sure.
Ncuti Gatwa will be great!!!
sarah jane adventures was so good! i feel like the purpose of the show was an introduction of doctor who to kids where the parents could watch it too bc they would have all grown up watching sarah jane and the 3rd/4th dr. such a great idea!
I hope this ages like fine wine.
it has to age better than their whittaker review.
I just want escapism, adventure, wit, heart, The Doctor smiling at danger and asking, what have you got? I just want to feel like I did when I first saw the 7th Doctor, that wide eyed wonder and not knowing what's coming, God damn I cannot wait for the new series.
That was the 11th Doctor era. Is so magic and insane fun.
I agree with all of this. However, I would just like to point out that BBC America is not free in America. To get the channel you have to pay for a cable package, which can run over $150 a month. To get it elsewhere you still had to pay for an app.
I was never disappointed by the 13th Doctor.
if your reasoning is that Gatwa is the perfect casting because hes gay and a black survivor of a war in Africa, then you are the problem with doctor who. It's his acting as the doctor that will see if he is perfect casting, not any other show hes been in and that we will have to see. Of course you also told us years ago that Shittaker was perfect casting, so your track record seems to suck anyways.
If only Riversong were back, it would be perfection!
Riversong could have been developed into a female equivalent to the Doctor.
I'm excited to see a more diverse Doctor done right. Jodie never had a proper chance, and I truly hope Ncuti does
I don't want more spin-offs unless it's the 8th
im excited how galifrey, or the master could come back, or timelord. also really excited for the classic dr who comic to iplayer in november
so problem 1 doubling down on rep[resentation isn't going to bring a golden age. thats exactly what killed it in the first place.
Second disney is becoming less popular and less profitable every day. being on disney pluss only is going to cost doctor who viiewers.
Gap years have always been, and always will be a money saving exercise. Why people swallow the excuses for this is a mystery
I am excited that Doctor Who is continuing into its third decade, and now Gen Z/Zed & GenAlpha will be able to have the same Shock & Awe that Boomers and GenX did in the Classic Who run...
