Rep. Katie Porter Calls Out Executive for Dangerous Marketing Putting Babies at Risk

- Fisher-Price knows it’s not safe for babies to sleep at an incline. They say they’ve recalled all their incline sleepers-but Rep. Porter is calling BS. They still sell a “Sweet Snugapuppy Dreams Deluxe Bouncer” and don’t even warn parents. Today, she confronted a top executive about this.

We should elect more people like Katie Porter who really care about the health and welfare of the American people.
Yeah, good luck with that! She has a law degree, but used it as a professor to teach. Which she is still doing now, teaching company execs who appear before Congress to be prepared.
She's like Bernie but younger. She whips out posters and whiteboard. While Bernie used giant tweets from Trump to get. GOP straight.
That dude should be thanking her for bringing this to his attention so his company doesn't get repeatedly sued to oblivion.
They all say they care when it's an election year. She proves she cares everyday.
If she really cared she would be looking at the government instead of doing the internet version of stomping around at big business.
At this point, I couldn't care less about business. They can't rip me off unless I let them.
The government is the real problem that needs addressing.
How hard is it to change a product's name? A great deal easier than bringing a dead child back to life I'd say.
Maybe, but it wouldn't surprise me if it's cheaper to pay off the family of the dead baby than to change all the printing equipment required for the product packaging. If that's the case, then it'd be bad business to act like a human being with a conscience.

@@frigginjerk oh its cheaper to pay for a dead baby, one dead baby vs stacks and stacks of "cost of doing business". Not being pessimistic, but, "it's not personal, it's business".
Their bean-counters have figured that payments from lawsuits would be less than profits gained from the product (without costs to rename).

I won't argue against that. Yet, people like Porter are always found among liberals, not conservatives. The moment they turn into someone like Porter, they stop being "conservative."
The founders of this country were the "liberals" in their time.
@@nedsantos1415 You are absolutely correct. Reforms have almost always been furthered by liberals, but I believe that even among liberals they are outliers. The ones who do the walk as opposed to the talk. In many areas liberals/conservatives, democrats/republicans are simply good cop/bad cop in preserving the status quo. Of course they differ in degree and trajectory.

She really isn't asking for much. Just removing any references to "sleep" or "dream" if nothing else will save on liability lawsuits. And shoving a safety warning on the back of the box again isnt a big deal and will save in litigation costs.
Right? This guy could have rescued his position by saying something like, "We can edit the online listing in about ten minutes, and print a run of big stickers to be applied to the boxes, that we will send out to retailers to apply to existing inventory as well as to our future production."

Problem is, these products are likely specifically targeted at (and capitalize on) parents who's kids are struggling with sleep dysregulation. If they can't implicate faster time to hassal free sleep, sales will drop off precipitously. They also likely have actuaries calculate the cost of a settling out of court for the few deaths that occur vs the sales of continuing marketing as is. Capital reigns supreme whenever you add an -ism.
@@astrammd Oh i agree about the part about companies figuring out misleading or dangerous product sales vs legal payout for pesky events like death. It's why regulations are necessary. Companies cant be trusted to do the right thing when doing the wrong thing is more profitable.
It's such a sick buisness model. How the actual f. is it possible that false advertising cases land in front of legislative representatives?

Unfortunate that this becomes a back and forth in legalise... Exec's just trying his best not to verbally admit wrong-doing so people don't get ammunition to sue them. She's doing a very good job making sure they have on record that they are going to change the issues presented. It's a battle of how to agree to change things without admitting to making a mistake.

Youch, FP needs to get on this. However I will point out something that was missed here: a lot of point of sale sites have horrible safety and ingredient data entry practices, personel, and policies imo. ULTA is guilty of this for example. Most of them hide behind disclaimers that clients should read updated info provided with the pakaging. Unfortunately they dodge their responsibilities while burdening the purchaser with returns and restocking fees (when applicable) instead of selling the products fairly. Also the sites do not always update their photos for what they wrongly presume to be the same product. CVS is guilty of this last as well in my experience. Add in that lately they have been omitting the actual amounts of product you are purchasing and it looks more like the Hollywood version Wild West than any structured and reasonably responsible business model. Just sayin' the guy probably was genuinely surprised to be faced with a picture several years old and not representative of what he is responsible for getting to Target for sale. ♡ Katie Porter I love what you do. Well done calling this out. It is dangerous for babies to be allowed to sleep in this position and nowhere in the name should it suggest otherwise. The company yes man is just not listening!
The devil is in the details and no one can hide for "Teacher" Ms Porter.
And THESE are the companies that ALWAYS say "Well it's the responsibility of the consumer to make sure the product is safe for them". And in actuality, you can't even find out if IT IS safe or not. Very sad and very ridiculous. This needs to change and change NOW.

What district are you in, Jennifer? For a blue state, we really do have a lot of regressives in our legislature. I feel fortunate to vote in Seattle, where we get some great candidates, but I wish we could get the progressive act together for the rural areas, too. Katie's a great role model.

Wow. How difficult is it to just say, "Yes, we'll include/update instructions to parents, and we'll remove references to dreaming." That just can't be a monsterously huge step for the company.

Wish I knew kids shouldn't be sleeping in things like this year's ago. A little shocked now that I know.. Nothing bad ever happened, thank God, but a visible warning would have been nice.
