1:05 - How did you choose your undergraduate major?
(Biology B.S & Minor in Global Health)
2:30 - Why did you choose to pursue higher education?
2:58 - Are there different types of public healths? Why did you choose epidemiology specifically?
3:55 - Typically you see biology and other life science majors go into doctoral degrees. In this regard your masters is sort of out of the norm. Why did you choose to go this route instead?

    10:20 - How political is your job/funding?
10:45 - Do you like your job?
    CLOSING THOUGHTS:
11:19 - How you recommend biology as an undergraduate degree?
    (DON’T DO IT)
12:43 - Would you recommend a career in public health, epidemiology?
13:07 - If you go back in time is there anything you would change?

    Description:
When we think of prestigious occupations we immediately jump to doctors and lawyers. However, there are many other options. While medical doctors help to heal patients who are already sick, an epidemiologist would work behind the scenes to help prevent this sickness from ever occurring in the first place. From your annual flu shot to a measles outbreak, these are the things epidemiologist work towards preventing everyday. Let’s take a look into this lucrative career of epidemiology in public health. Is epidemiology the right choice for you? What does it take to become an epidemiologist? Check out my newest video for the details! You won’t regret it ;)

I am literally in the same route. I finished my BA in biology and premedical studies. I initially wanted to go to med school. However I did lots of research and found that public health solves healthcare problems from their roots. It’s a lot of management and communication skills. I perusing an MPH degree now. Medicine is interesting but it is a long way career that requires passion and dedication. In public health, you can start working while you are studying so you can potentially gain more experience and ultimately become a healthcare professional. Just sharing my thoughts…

    • @canine3206

Hi Kelvin. I have a MPH in Epidemiology, and I am currently working on PhD in Epidemiology. The MPH is a professional degree with multiple concentrations (biostats, epidemiology, environmental science, behavior health, and health systems). Majority of MPH programs require one biostatistics class, however; for epidemiology concentrations most programs required a second biostatistics class. These two classes go over topics like correlations, chi-square test, analysis of variance, T-Test, multivariable regression analysis (linear, logistic, poisson, cox proportional hazards models). The intro to epidemiology class does have some easier math in it, such as proportions, percentages, and etc. Typically, you take principles of epidemiology, intermediate epidemiology, design and analysis, biostatistics 1 and 2 then you have to take 9 hours of electives. Some electives might be topic related (cancer, infectious disease, chronic disease) or more method based (math modelling, survey design, sampling methods, and etc).

I am on the same boat as you who's math is not the strength, but the problem arises - how much math and data analysis you can handle at work in the real world after graduation? If your job requires tones of math skills and your colleagues are way better than you, then you will look pretty bad.
