If so, follow me as I begin my journey towards completing my part-time/online MPH program from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in January 2018 while also working full time as an informatics pharmacist!
    In this video, I share my personal letter of intent I used when I applied to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Master of Public Health Program in Fall 2016.

    Brian, thank you so much for sharing. I was having such a difficult time with my SOP until I happened upon this video. Your statement was beautifully written. I'm happy to share that I'll be doing my MPH at Johns Hopkins so I'll be watching some of your other videos too! Thank you again!

      Hi Marianne! I'm so glad you found it helpful and ecstatic that you will be doing your MPH at JHU! It's honestly one of the best experiences in my life and I'm still very involved with the program, my classmates, and professors even after graduation. Let me know how it goes!

    That sounded like a well written letter of intent! Your transitions were smooth so it seemed to flow nicely. It was helpful to hear that so thank you for sharing it.

    Hi Brian, Thanks so much for sharing. I really like your introduction-the way you draw in the audience- and the flow of your letter. Drawing in your audience in your introduction truly is an art, and I believe it may be the most important part of the Personal Statement/Letter of Intent. You have to be effective in catching their attention and making them want to find out more!

      I really appreciate that Sonya! The intro certainly makes a huge impact and sets the tone for the rest of the essay. I'm sure it makes the reviewers/readers job more fun too.

    Hi Brian. This video has gotten my gears running! Thanks for the inspiration.
    If you are willing, I would like your opinion on things or perspectives to include in my personal statement when in my personal case, I am transitioning into public health from a natural science background, especially when my qualifications and experiences are not too relevant (at a glance).

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  3 роки тому

      I'm so glad you got some inspiration from it Yoshida!
      As for things to include, I honestly think any personal statement that fully reflects your honest and open reasons as to why you're pursuing an MPH is excellent. Each and every applicant comes with their own unique story - regardless of their prior experiences - be sure to highlight it. I'm sure you have a very specific reason or reasons on why you're pursuing an MPH - focus on that and I think you'll have an excellent personal statement. Good luck!

    HI! Thanks for sharing this - How are you liking the program? How many other students are in your cohort?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  3 роки тому

      I love it! It's honestly one of the best experiences I've had in my life. The professors, the classmates, the course content, the flexibility, etc. I graduated in May 2020 and have been contemplating going back for another degree. There were 75 students in my MPH cohort! That's usually about average.

    Why did you choose to do MPH when you are already working as pharmacist infomatics? I have decided to pursue pharamcy infomatics because of your videos. (Before i saw your videos i was at crossroads which masters should i pursue, my major choices were MPH and masters in health informatics/pharamcy infomatics). What made you change your mind.?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  4 роки тому +3

      Hey Sowmya! Here's a video with my answer to this: ua-cam.com/video/-nbbd4Z_qYM/v-deo.html at around the 6 minutes & 30 second mark. In that video, I actually go through my rationale of why I ended up choosing MPH because I also was debating between MPH vs. MHA vs. MBA vs. MHI.
      If you don't get a chance to watch that video, in short, I pursued an MPH because I want to make a larger impact on helping others. Regardless of what profession I was in, be it pharmacy informatics or something else, my goal will always be to pursue and/or engage in activities that would help me fulfill that goal. So to your question/comment, I would say to make sure you pursue the things that matter most to you. Hopefully that helps!

    Was the LOI applying to MPH similar to the pharmacy residency?

    • @briankfung
      @briankfung  3 роки тому

      Probably only in the part about being personal. The structure is slightly different - pharmacy residencies are a bit more structured - for better or worse :)

      Hi Katrina! This was 1.5 pages single spaced. Requirements may have changed since I applied, but the requirement before was a word limit, not a page limit.

      @@briankfung Hi Brain, I am almost done with the Statement of Purpose. I hope LOI and SOP are the same. I was wondering, is there an ideal limit of words for the SOP or LOI? Harvard had a 600 word limit and LSHTM in UK too. I think I would end up with almost 800 at max
