    Hello TriAngulum.
    Yes, the Sherman was a good class of ship, and had many good features... but along with passenger carry capacity, at least a few were used to ferry large numbers of troops to battlefronts on occasion.
    I used to play Starfleet Battles, and other such 'Trek' style board games. In them, I tried to obtain Sherman class ships, and barring that, to create a 'Sherman clone' from other ship types. My most successful version was a 'troop carrier' version of the Miranda class, and turning several others into mobile Fighter Carrier ships.

    lets say it has the same shields as a constitution. low profile, same speed, same guns. no wonder these things were tougher then most other ships of the era. it might be boring, but if i was a jr officer working on a thesis or something to get an advanced degree this might be something to volunteer for a year or two on.

    It seems like a design that should come out at a similar time to the Excelsior class as it looks to share the same warp nacelle technology. With the move towards phaser strips on ships if the line, having a relatively lightly armed cargo class that can use all those now surplus phaser turrets that Starfleet would be sitting on makes a lot of sense as well as some of the older style torpedo launchers.

    4:00 I would think that colony would've at least had some food replicators or synthesizers to help supplement their food supply. Do you have a date TriAngulum when replicators where first available in the Federation? I assume with all the tech from all the member species, including the highly advanced Vulcans, that technology like that would've been regularly available. I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong 😅😅😅

  • @EliotHochberg

    So this got me thinking, why do we even need cargo vessels? Wouldn’t it be easier for most cargo to be stored as data, and then just have ships that contain sufficient raw materials and energy to transport down to the surface whatever items were needed? At some point in Star Trek canon, it must be the case, the transporter buffers would become a way to not only store the staples of life, but to manufacture them. And so all you would need, would be one scan of any particular, good, and you could have as much of it as you need.
    And then, in the instance of materials, food, or other objects, that, for some reason resisted being stored in this way, could you not still use the transporter buffer to being unique versions of those into it, and then bring them back out at the target location?

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  Рік тому +1

      Yes that IS the case, and occurs something in between 2402 and the 32nd Century, as we see that tech in that century!

  • @tnolddawg

    At first, I was upset that your backstory included the death of Hoshi Sato at the hands of Governor Kodos...
    But given her history learning from Captain Archer, she would be one of the 1st chosen by Kodos to put down any resistance to his edicts because she would never stand for 1/2 the population to be executed to save the remaining colonists

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  Рік тому +3

      The death of Hoshi is NOT my Backstory, it's canon, from the Enterprise Episode "In a Mirror Darkly" Part 2... When Archer says to Mirror Hoshi, that the computer even says how she died, that's what he's reading on the screen!

  • @Justice107
    @Justice107 Рік тому +1

    Isn't smaller then the Ptolemy class? The Ptolemy class looks to have more cargo space. The Sherman class would be perfect as an escort for a convoy of Ptolemies while carrying cargo itself using transit. Ideally Shermans would be better suited for outer, less safer frontiers as the Ptolemy class isn't as heavily armed.

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  Рік тому +2

      The Prolemy Class was old, sluggish, and at the end of her lifetime by this classes introduction... And the video DOES say this class was for the outer frontier! ;)

    The problem with cargo ships is that they can't defend themselves they need to be equipped with "powerful" forward and aft weapons and equipped with hull armor also cargo ships need fast engines.

  • @marcatteberry1361
    @marcatteberry1361 Рік тому

    Love Star Trek and all... But with replicators, from portable to heavy industrial, why do they need Cargo Ships in the first place....

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  Рік тому

      Well first, not everything can be replicated. Highly complex molecular patterns still need to be made the old fashioned way. IE Certain Medicines, Energy Conversion Sources like Dilithium, Toxic materials like Pergium needed for Life Support Systems etc...
      Second, supply and demand. Having already made materials, shipped to where they need to be is faster then making 1 item at a time.
      Lastly, energy and material cost. Replicators dont run on magic. They take stored broken down materials at a molecular level and reconstitute them in to other items. So what do you do when you dont have the materials or energy required to make what your colony needs to survive?
      So there are MANY reasons, Cargo ships are required!

  • @entropy11
    @entropy11 Рік тому

    At what point would Starfleet start moving cargo stored in special high capacity transporter buffers?

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios
      @TriAngulumAudioStudios  Рік тому

      Not until sometime after s3 of Picard, and before the 31st Century as seen in canon!

  • @kfeltenberger
    @kfeltenberger Рік тому

    Somehow I think the people who design "cargo ships" for Star Trek have no grasp or conception about what they're doing...they're essentially designing a "starship" and slapping the tag "cargo ship" on it and then grinning like kid with a sno-cone. Look at the cargo ships we have today and compare the volume on a simple Panamax container ship to this ship...there's no comparison; the Trek ship doesn't have near the lift capacity. Yes, they may have replicators, but they still need raw materials and that takes volume.
    Kudos to the guy who designed this, but there really needs to be some small amount of reality injected into these designs.

    • @TriAngulumAudioStudios

      Because, it's not just as simple as saying "I want to do this ship" as I am not a 3d Modeler, and need a 3d Model to make a video... I can kitbash together existing models in to limited designs (designs that use existing parts) but not whole new designs...
