Chess game with the Deer
Time for a new sight. I don't want to sound like i'm bashing, but I don't hunt whitetail from a treestand but one week a year for the past 6 years, but I am 3 for 5 when I have, and if I were you I'd get a better sight with 3 pins or a slider that allows you to move to the correct yardage rather than holding over. My guess is you weren't actually lining your peep up to the sight ring, evan a 1/16" misalignment would add up to several inches by 30 yards...
Jon why didn’t you move that stand closer to that edge after the first sit we saw?
Which first lite pants are you running?
NY state land is a hidden gem for archery but once the bullets start flying you might better hunker down...
Just curious, he said the buck was 30 yards yet he said he put his 20 yard pin on his spine, with a single pin if he knew the yardage adjust your pin accordingly, most single pin set ups are easily adjusted buy thumbs up or thumbs down correct, with the tape that reads 10, 20, 30, yards and so on, everyone misses I know this, but using Kentucky windage for the rigs we shoot today is unheard of, am I right or wrong, course if his 20 yard pin shot that far over his back adjusting for 30 would have him shooting at airplanes.
Blaze orange in southern tier so must be up state
“ 30 yards and I put my 20 pin on his spine “.
It works out a lot better for me at 30 yards when I put my 30 pin on the vitals.
That deer dropped at least a foot.
Are you guys planning on hunting Indiana in the future
Single pin slider... he was at 30 move the sight to 30?
So it's actually the isolated patch of oaks that are congregating the deer in that spot, not a terrain funnel? Would like to see what this spot looks like on topo map. It does not look like much of a funnel to me. Looks like fairly open woods and gentle slopes. Confused after listening to the podcast and watching this.
Don’t feel bad the other night I had two missed same sit. I rattled a buck and he pushed a large herd of does right under my stand. I missed a huge doe with a branch covering her vital. Stuck right in. The. The buck came down the hill and I had a surgical miss at 15 yards. For reasons unknown I put my 30 pin on his vitals and released. What was I thinking 🤔 I just can’t get it out of my mind
make it hard on hunter,s when you step on owner,s fence,s.
Can I ask where in New York are u guys hunting I was born and raised in upstate NY and I have countless miles of hunting in alot of areas in my 28 yrs of hunting I'm just curious if you might have been hunting in an area I might have hunted I love watching your videos
Jon can you share a drawing of what this area look like topographically? I'd love to see what about this terrain makes it such a great funnel. I'm new to hunting hills and I've got some great topography on my newly acquired land, but I'd love to understand what makes a good terrain funnel.
Where in NY was this?
Get a bow sight with 2 or more pins not one
He ducked the arrow. Shit. All good brother. It happens
Wow that doe was so close
AWESOME video Thanks for sharing later cool stuff
30 yrds from elevated stand...Shd be able to put your 20 yrds pin on vitals and be good to go...may hit an inch or two low but will account for the buck dropping. It happens, live and learn.
My bow shoots flat 20-30 should of put it bearly above her pit maybe a couple inches high.
Time to hit the range...
Is that the guy from Cabelas northern flight?
I notice at 22:10 your odd fletching is up instead of out... I don't know if it's the same for everyone but something to look at. My odd fletchings always face out.
Most likely just dropped your bow arm and didn’t bend at the waist. You have to keep a “T” form when shooting. I’ve had this same situation a few times.
Check out Joel Turner's online course at Shot IQ to conquer target panic.
A clean miss is better than a bad hit.
What fixed blades does Zach use?
They could edit out the misses but they don’t in order to keep it real. I’m glad they show it! Also I have been in that situation so many times where I missed and I don’t even know what happened. If you’re not missing you’re probably not hunting. It hurts every time but it still happens.
Those one pin sights are a bitch. Never enough time to range the deer and fix ur pin to where u want
Yes, practice only from elevated position for the whole summer. That’s what I’m doing. Being from Cali I have spot and stalked everything I killed. This is a while new animal for me. Now being a Tennessee resident. Good content👍
Come over to Massachusetts
When you shoot from a tree stand with a riser, your arrow will rise some. Shooting at 30 yards with your 20 yard pin, you’ll need to hold it about where you would at 20 yards with the same pin. Most deer will always jump string and with the rise of the arrow, you’ll hit where you aim.
Your arrow isn't "rising" it's always falling aka gravity 🤪
Huh?
Thanks for coming to NY Great show..
Jon - I didn't see your stance in the video but I used to shoot right over their backs all of the time. It was so frustrating I almost gave up. Then I had a friend who knows his crap tell me to start stop shooting by bending my arms but keep your arms straight all of the time and bend at the hips. You need to make that perfect triangle that stays constant from your hands, hips, and eye. Good luck bro!
I understand its a little lame to have shooting light be sunrise/sunset.... But being in the woods before the morning sunrise move has helped me more then once here in Tompkins County....
Anchor point... I had it too many times, in the heat of the moment, a quarter inch low on my cheek sends the arrow SUPER high like that. Don’t get discouraged and keep at Jon!
Happy Hunting

Oh I got one now!!!! 😉
@@tgmunplugged4327 nice! I had the same trouble before I got one installed.
What terrain feature is Jon hunting that makes that stand location such a good funnel?
Jordan Couch I would love to know as well
I'd settle for the GPS coordinates
They explain it somewhat in the podcast.
Red Oaks
@@cams.3102 Thanks for the suggestion. I gave it a listen and it was really helpful.
Keep ur head up bud I've walked out of the wood with no arrows in my quiver
Lol I've walked out with only 1 and he was all mangled up but I got the buck
zach how do you like the pants?
Great rutting footage! Keep them coming
Are you guys in the catskill mountains in this video
No, pretty sure they're out in Western NY. I'm from the Catskill mountains and you don't have much habitat like Zach is hunting in...
What part of New York are you guys hunting here? What county or city?
Asking for some GPS coordinates would be more to the point.
No shit right! Lol!
What's your dob, address, and ssn?
Interesting
Have y'all ever tried one of them there Ghost Blinds? Any thoughts good or bad?
I live/hunt in NY. Thank you for pointing out the stupidity of the hunting hours. Totally agree
My guess is that enough dummies shot other hunters during twilight that they changed the hours to make it safer. The hunting demographic has changed alot. There was a time when car loads of hunters from NYC drove out to the western part of the state and would shoot at anything that moved. Lack of hunter safety, etc.
@@flowlineproductions I'd be interested to see when they made the shooting light law. These days there are very few hunter on hunter shootings. Most people up here get hurt getting in and out of their tree stands. My uncle did find an Old Timer that was sitting dead against a tree, once. Had a Heart attack. Poor guy. I obey the shooting light law because I self film and who's gonna video themselves breaking the law. Not that I agree or disagree , but most hunters up here shoot as soon as they can see.
it’s the worst. especially if your not hunting timber and out in fields or open ground. legal time will be up in the pm
and it’s still
broad daylight.
@@flowlineproductions i agree that that is the most likely reasoning (or at least claimed reasoning) behind the law, but I for one would have much rather seen a law saying something like 'you are required to carry a small artificial light on you on the walk to and from yada yada' or some such thing rather than deny so much of 'primetime' to responsible hunters. Anyway Im curious as to why hunters from states with no such law seem to be doing just fine with not shooting eachother.
@@byv4480 the reason why New York's got stupid hunting laws is because you got a bunch of uppity democratic hipsters that don't hunt don't know shit about hunting making laws the prohibit you from hunting the way it should be done because they don't want people owning weapons or hunting in the first place
These videos are better than any show on tv. Keep it up fellas. Come hunt in Alabama with us. Take this as an invitation
You guys should come to Vermont and do some hunting.
Just asking as an NY hunter, were y’all hunting Alleghany or further east like finger lakes region?! Great videos btw keep em’ coming!!
Or maybe Adirondacks?
Bend at the waist.
I wish the only way people could leave BS critical comments would be to post a link to their own channel where they never miss or never make a mistake. What these morons don't realize is by criticizing others they simply reveal how little experience they really have. Anyone who says they haven't missed or lost deer is either a liar or a beginner. Every REAL hunter has experienced those tough times. Only childish keyboard warriors who spend most of their time playing video games fail to understand this. I respect the hell out of THP's dedication to REALITY. Screw these no-name wannabe's who don't even possess the courage to show themselves doing it.
What type of terrain feature are those guys hunting?
Zach, you can still get set up early and be ready just like any other state. I don’t like walking to my hunting location in the morning when the suns up, and the deer are moving in NNY. If you have a prime location, get there early, chances are you catch them at legal light.
Could have flinched with the shot . Keep your head up. I lost two nice bucks this year and missed an opportunity on Halloween then after that drew on a good buck and it was spooked by another and i missed .
Thank you I was wondering if you guys would try hunting public land in NY I love all your videos keep dropping em guys
Back to the range.🎯
Stellar dog footage Ben!!
I was gonna suggest moving the stand closer that Jon was in. All the deer have been just out of range. And if just wondering if your gonna shoot 30 yds why not have a 30 yd pin instead of raising your 20yd pin to top of spine. Did look like the deer kinda dropped when you shot and duct arrow. Good video .
I dig the crank bait on the dash!
What bino harness dose Zack use?
vortexoptics.com/vortex-binocular-harness-strap.html
Nothing beats sitting in some hardwoods during a good parade and hearing those footsteps, if you see seven deer that day you have seen the seven wonders of the world.
Guys!!!!!! Yall gotta get Zach's Elk hunt up on here.... freakin' awesome! Oh, loving the NY hunts too,.... very different.
Is Jon on private or state land? Looks to be in the finger lakes region. Seneca area can tell by terrain...... Lol
Should have put it top of lungs not spine, you made a good shot he just jumped your string. 20 yard pin at 30 should have only dropped about 6 inches
Practice at all yardage20-40 with sight set on 20 yds your bow probably pretty fast so there's not much difference in 20 30 yds so if 20 was on back you where aiming high lung for 30 so he dropped your shot also. I use single pin and what I do is put a white do on my pin to mark 30 yds. I missed more deer high than I ever have low doing great job we bow Hunter learn something new with every animal we take or shoot at
Vermont is where I'm from
Probably over compensated for the 10 yard difference. My arrows only drop a few inches from 20-30, factor in the deer ducking and it's a miss every time. Ask me how I know.... I've missed two doing the same thing this year. I can't stress enough to practice various yardages when shooting a single pin, I failed to do so with my current bow and it shows. Best of luck fellas, just trying to offer some advice
Dylan , l always sighted in from an elevated stand and practiced from it also. Are shooting with gloves ? Is your string hitting coat collar or sleeve ? All things to work out. Sometimes it’s the small stuff. All the luck . OHIO MITCH.
I picked you guys up on my trail cam 11-3-19 in - unit. Don’t deny it
Post pic or it didn't happen.
I hate it for you I've missed plenty of them. They mostly all duck some amount. With that single pin set at 20 and he was 30 I would have aimed mid body. Putting the actual impact point at the bottom of the chest. He would have ducked right into it.
Check your tire pressure
Perfect video to make my work night go better
Those wild apples growing in the woods are some of the best tasting.
Crabapples
Where in NY are you hunting, I live in NY and missed a wall hanger it would have been my first buck
Remember when THP was sitting at 25k , and there was no goggle ads that take 15 seconds out of our watching enjoyment.
.those were the days. But congrats at 140k more

Your vanes for turned the wrong way.
Need to be patient waiting for big bucks.
we all miss a few, but that's bow hunting. Keep plugging away fellas!
That man saying, “You’re from Iowa, why are you hunting in NY?” Was my first thought as well. Usually Orange County, NY harvest the most bucks each year. But, if you want to see a lot of deer during Bow season, try Long Island. A lot of public land, lots of deer and some of the biggest deer rack wise you’ll see.
Ever been to the Adirondacks?? Way bigger than anywhere else in NY.....lol
Iowa City, IA in the house!!
If I took a 30-yard shot using my 20-yard pin I would only aim about 3 inches high. My bow only drops around 2-1/2 to 3 inches max from 20 to 30 yards.
I thought the same thing. I can shoot one pin out to 30 with no issues. At the most it would drop 2 inches.
Plus shots always go higher on downhill shots because the effect of gravity on your arrow is lessened because it's headed downhill already. It's happened to almost every hunter at some point I suppose. Just a bummer to see it happen after working so hard to get one.
@@genehalteman882 that's why it's important to have an angle-compensated range-finder. I got one for $60, one of the best investments I've made.
Yup I got ride of my 30 pin because it was damn near touching my 20 making it hard to use either of them
Well he has heavy arrows and they should drop more
The best part of this vid is when the bird dog pinched a loaf @24:59
It's past my bedtime, I'll have to watch this tomorrow while I'm getting ready to head to deer camp. That way if I forget anything, I can blame it on you guys!
Awesome content. Love the terrain. Very similar to some of these alabama mountains. It would be great to see more of Jon Lewis and this New York hunting.
Trying to stop deer with a blat isn't the best idea much of the time, but seems highly copied by other bow hunters these days. They see it on videos and mimic it because it always seems to work out. Not a good idea overall because you voluntarily put the deer on alert when it stops and you still might not get the shot. Other times it just bolts off. Shooting at a calm deer slowly walking within easy bow range isn't any harder. Even the Big Buck Serial Killer isn't too wild about this practice.
Ever since I started letting them stop on there own to get a shot I've not had one duck like you said it sends them off to alert mode
Visine! My kinda guy!
We all miss eventually. I'd love to hunt New York someday. Maybe Allegheny or the Catskills. Great production guys. Fun watching! I thought the camera guy was going to get caught on the fence, lol. I do all my hunting on the ground. I haven't hung a stand for 5 or 6 years now. Just love the eye to eye in your face action. Do you guys shoot alot at ground level?
Time for Jon to get a upgrade on his bow sight. I was suprised to see that single pin on that red white and blue bow! Keep hunting it will all come together eventually. Zach and the THP crew i enjoy watching you guys hunt and the advice you give. Keep it up!
lol "HAVE A GOODERN"
You should not have your range finder hanging from your left shoulder right where your bow string travels. Hang it from your right shoulder. Could be why you missed?
When ur shooting from a stand aim low cause the deer will drop down like their dodging ur arrow so aim near bottom of their body
You stuffed it up missing, that shot buddy
man i love all your videos guys but I’m looking forward to some Iowa footage.
Always a better night when thp is playing threw the speaker, you're not the only one that doesn't like the sunrise to sunset times.
What's the guys name with the long hair from Ohio now lives in Iowa?
You shouldn’t have put your 20 yard pin on his back , you had plenty of time to adjust that sight.... just saying... think about how much the sight moves from 20 to 30 maybe a half inch or so? So readjusting and aiming multiple inches is going to equal over shooting every time or under shooting and that’s my two sense maybe next time you will get’r done
Yall gotta start gettin to the stand before daylight, how many times have yall been halfway up the tree and got deer all around you 😂😂
