- Having a strawberry plant is not just a joy, it is an opportunity to share! When strawberry plants put out runners, they are a whole new plant, and that plant will send out runners as well, This effect snowballs and can feed the world with a single strawberry plant, and the act of sharing. So if you liked this video, share it too!

Blackberries grow everywhere here in Seattle and the other day I saw a homeless guy picking them on the side of the road. I might start propagating them from my back yard and put more blackberries where homeless people might walk by.
Good thought.
I just felt compelled to say, I'm not homeless and I've collected/eaten roadside blackberries many times.
Typical Seattleite: feeding the homeless encourages them to return
Guerrilla gardening!
Uhhhh Vancouver here, blackberries are native to the great northwest. But most blackberries you see are Himalayan and there are invasive, pls don't spread them.
That's biblical
I love your philosophy! I’ve heard of public parks being planted with food producing plants for all to take. I hope more cities will do it. You’ve inspired me to plant strawberry plants, which I will share if all goes well! 🌱😀🌵
In Spain, I remember the streets were lined with orange trees that everyone was just picking and eating off the trees. It was so lovely.
Wee woo wee woo! I'm from the future, Migardener became president and you sir pulled out runners not but a few years later. Impeachment time.
Yes he did! I started laughing at that line, because I watched the composting strawberry runners vid first.
Funny that you said you’d make it illegal but in another video you were tossing them too. Those are some happy strawberries!!
Great video on strawberries and runners. Almost every one of my strawberry plants came from one plant I bought last year, and I have a lot of strawberry plants! Take care, Kim
Oh what a difference 7 years make! Love ya, Luke! Couldn't help myself.
I plant sequoia strawberries and they too send out runners. What I learned from you today is that I can separate the runners and then plant them in other containers. Previously I would surround my plant with a bunch of little pots and 'pin' the runners into soil, wait for them to root and THEN cut the stems. Great info!!
my rabbits love the strawberry runners from my garden... so i usually give them to the buns... bunny spaghetti...
Bunny spaghetti,
hahaha that's great!
I just started my strawberries this year. My mom actually gave me about 6 of hers because her strawberry garden became so over run. Your videos are very helpful.
Good to see someone that loves strawberries (and the plants) as much as I do. After a couple years your patch will decline, so you take runners and make new patches (and give them away). FYI: Jewel is a junebearing variety, not everbearing, but definitely one of my favorites for sure. I only recommend Junebearing varieties for anyone that wants big yields.
I love how practical your videos are. Thanks for helping me plant my garden!
Great video! I got 130 plants out of 24 in just one year! I transplanted last fall and looking forward to a bumper crop!
Oh wow! May I ask the name of the strawberry?
@@off-gridsimplyhappyrodriguez Always grow strawberry varieties that a breeder created in a climate similar to yours. Grow June harvest ones, try to get early, mid and late varieties. They all tend to make runners like crazy, the biggest problem is pest and diseases that can build up so its best to read up on how to manage them and overwinter them.
Thanks for recommending this variety. I need to try growing some.
Agreed, I'm always "sharing the love"...it makes me feel good (especially during times, when everything is so very expensive). ❤️🙏
YAHOO !! GOT A TON OF RUNNERS PLANTING A HUGE STRAWBERRY PATCH !! THANK U FOR ALL THE GREAT ADVICE
Son thanks for the tips I have one plant my first time growing strawberries so I am learning so much thanks for sharing keep planting 💕
Great video Luke. I think strawberries are one of the easiest plants to propagate. They nearly do all the work for you.
The Productive Garden you are absolutely right, Doesn't get any easier.
So strawberries are never grown from those seeds in their exterior?
Young man, your videos are simply wonderful. Thank you for the information you provide. 🌱
Wow! Thank you so much for the information! I had heard that second and third year strawberries aren't as good as the first year, but now I know I can expect fresh plants every year if I just cultivate them. I'm going to attempt to nurse my strawberry plants through our crazy Arizona summer here (it's already over 100 every day here) and see if I can't get them to start producing again in fall/winter. It's amazing how valid the information you share is even for gardening in such a radically different climate. Thanks again!
That's my problem, trying to get them through the summer. It probably works easier in ground/thick raised beds, where mulch is more effective, but I've still never seen anyone effectively get them through summer, and also allow fruiting. I did manage to get the parent plants through to runner stage by pulling off every flower (no berries), but lost those runners next summer. Even the 50% where I clipped all their flowers over fall/winter to give them a better chance of surviving summer. The December-February strawberries (on the other %50 fall runners) were amazing enough that eventually I keep trying strawberry plants again!
Being a new urban gardener we have only tried tomatoes and peppers so far, we am going to try planting strawberries using a vertical garden this year. Thanks for the information as will make sure not to prune and throw any of the runners and instead replant and expand our strawberry garden
YES! My strawberry plants are like weeds now due to their runners!!!! I went on vacation for a couple of weeks and they reached my lawn! I had strawberries growing on my lawn!!!
I love the generosity of your spirit of sharing. Thank you for all of this valuable information.
yeah they reproduce faster than you can give them away. i had my indoor one make 6 plants before fruiting.
As a matter of fact I'll be glad to take what ever plants you got left from other plants as well!! 🌸🌺🌹💐
i pin the runner down to a 2 or 3 inch pot with compost in and when i have roots coming out the bottom of the pot i cut the runner
david appleton That is very effective!
Your garden is totally awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Strawberries are my favorite plant. I go out hunting for strawberries in my greenhouse pretty much every day for my breakfast. Straight off the plant and into me. Yum!.
Jim Conner warm to the touch from the sun.. OH MY....
Strawberry Leaves make an EXCELLENT Tea, too!!! Try it!!!!
+guloguloguy That is great to know, will have to try! Thank yOU! :D
How bout now?
Now?
Still waiting on a reply.
How do you make the tea....let the leaves lay in a sun area?(like the car back window)....boil water let the leaves steep then strain????that's how I do comfrey leaves
I am glad I found your channel this year. You are so helpful. Hard to find that in this day and age so I am very grateful. I can't take any strawberry plants this year as I have no place to put them but I will be very happy for the person who gets them. Yum! Blessings Luke.
PS. We are in Michigan...I need you to start teaching on geo thermal green houses, and other types of winter gardening. I need educating! You are such a great teacher.
I'm SO EXCITED to have found your channel and catching up on some videos! We're doing our first East TN garden this year and we're super excited!!
That's a wise thought, Luke! Unfortunately not everyone who is in poverty wants to or can grow food due to lack of water source, but I hope this would change soon. Homegrown strawberries are definitely the tastiest. I think anyone who sampled some would love to grow their grown!
marymonk not everyone has a place to put plants outside, poor or not. I lived in subsidized housing some years ago. My apartment was on the 3rd floor with no balcony. True, that I could have grown them inside instead, but that was back before we were allowed to buy seeds and fruiting plants with food stamps. A lot of people don't even know they can do that now, because it's a new development in the SNAP program. So unless you've actually been dirt poor, please don't speak for them. And if you have been, shame on you for being so disparaging.
It won't matter how easy they really are to grow mary, and how logical you are to teach and encourage, them some folks will argue and find reasons why they can not, if only they spent 5 % of that effort to show themselves they can, they would be eating fresh jam right now LOL
Thank you very much! This is great information. I have my single strawberry plant in the nursery pot on my patio but I am going to put it in a bigger container so it will have space to send out runners. I live in the Caribbean where it is really hot and sunny, so I don't think putting it out in full sun is a great idea. I will find somewhere sunny but cool to place it. Thanks again for your very interesting video.
I ended up with around 14 new plants from 1 plant this year 👍
Oh those runners. I have pumpkin plants and they run too. I took off the running part and it did it again.
"Share the love" ❤️ That's awesome! ~Detroit
What a great video! Thank you for the inspiration to save the runners and keep things going! We need good gardening tips like this so we can really take back our own food production! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

We are doing it! With videos like yours sharing good information - - soon people will have more and more tools to growing and sharing lots of food!
Simple & concise…..very well done!
I began rooting and selling my runners.
And the plants seem to benefit from the process
What do you price them at?
Such a good idea! I’ve been looking for ideas to help pay for my gardening supplies, and hopefully save up for a greenhouse for over winter gardening.
There are groups that would take them too...such as boys and girls clubs.. Teach how to produce free food and kids will love it....
+T cox Very good idea!
Love your bids, I wish I had some of those plants. I am just getting into growing produce. I just moved to a beautiful spot with lots of growing room. I can learn a lot from you and thank you.
I'll vote for you!!! You have a lot of ideas that would make this a better world.
Leland Somers well thank you! MIgardener2036 - A gardener who will grow the country, the economy, and your garden. ;)
Well, guess I missed the give away lol! This is my first year doing strawberries and love it. Wish I'd done more research though.
Can you do a taste review of strawberry plants based on the varieties you have?
Hello from England UK. Lots of valuable information in this video, thank you so much for sharing. I grew my strawberries in hanging baskets this year as my garden is small, so only a small harvest but I'll have a go at planting them out for the winter. Wish me luck! 🇬🇧
Jewel is one of the best strawberries too!
Awesome video, love how the strawberries are able to just grow and grow into more plants :-)
very informative video! great explanation!
we love growing strawberries, most of the strawberries in the grocery stores hardly have any flavorful taste, they taste like sugar water hardly no strawberry flavor. The ones we ended up growing (even if they were a lot smaller) have so much more flavor. The last couple of years we did grow them in a hanging container which I don't think helps very well with the development of the runners because they don't ended up in the soil ..
Holy smokes! They multiply like rabbits.
Dude you have no clue.
thank you for showing us how to save the runners.
Awesome! Good to know about the runners. I just planted a few seeds in a raised garden planter that I can bring indoors.
I want some of your strawberry runners..... I planted 15, and after 16 weeks, there is one root alive.
I like how I watch this after I watch him getting rid of his strawberry runners and here him saying it should be illegal
I want some Luke.. Can't seem to have luck in sowing actual seeds.. Luv Strawberries.. More power to you..
Amazing video! Enjoyed it do much and learnt why my plants did not fruit. I will be cutting some runners today 😊
This is an informative video. Farmer friends of mine gave us one plant with all of our other seedlings. It came back this spring. I'm going to look for runners this year to see if I can increase my strawberry plants. Excited! Curious to know which zone you are in. I'm in 6a.
perfect video! Glad i saw this as i have strawberries with runners and didnt know what to do. Love your vids. plz keep sharing learning a lot from you
this is great advise Luke i have a strawberry plant that i bought at the local farmers market it is a french veriety that he said tastes very nice ...and it did ..quite like wild strawberry ..a little goes a long way with the flavor of these as i had a couple of berries from the plant ...but now that i have one last berry turning red i wIll let it get ripe and keep the seeds and try to start them ..bless me luck please u gave me the idea as i only have one plant to propagate .
TheBhannah Saving seeds is great! I like the alpine (wild) varieties as well. So much strawberry flavor packed into one little berry.
I have three kinds of alpine strawberries (red, yellow and white). They don't produce runners, but they seed themselves _everywhere_. Even in the small gap between the tiles on the walkway. :)
I just plant them in their own space, and see what happened and if they have cross-pollinated. Will be interesting to see. :)
Strawberry fields forever
Let me take you down cause I am going to... strawberry fields.
Another great video. I have a small healthy patch of strawberries that have already fruits and now is growing a lot of runners. Thanks for the advice and directing me towards building a bed for the runners. I guess I was waiting to see if they plant themselves. Lol
that's awesome.. I have been trying to grow strawberries for a while now but the ones I bought never grew..would love to have some of those
We just make little greenhouse for us me and my husband 3 kids we will love have some strawberries plan 😀

Ya, Luke for president!
I will give them try.
I also plan to do strawberries this weekend.
Have a good weekend you
MrWilariba Have a great weekend! Thanks for watching.
Thank you
this is a good vdo and very useful. thanks for shared.
very informational. THANK YOU! Also taught me about dormancy and now I know how it works. thanks again!
well said and explained Luke. Thank you.
good Ideas.. left a like.. now if I find strawberries.
I may try your gutter idea... We've got an old sandbox we grew some in this year, but setting up some gutter system, we could go vertical.
Lmao and years later you had to throw away 5000 strawberry runners 😂 Lucky you didn’t become president
Do you recommend thinning strawberry patches? I put in 2 new patches this spring, and didn't cut any runners while the patches were being established. Can you have a patch be too thick? Thanks for the time you put into your videos, I enjoy Learning from you.
Great video! Couple questions...
Can I plant them now, in July?
Why the raised beds? Do the beds only have walls and no floor? Sorry, I'm a complete noob to gardening.
How do you keep snails and other pests from damaging the plant?
Hi
Wow I learned a lot thanks
It's also important to note that you shouldn't keep the runners in place during the first couple of years to focus the plant's effort on fruit production, eventually, as the plant gets older, its berry quality and quantity decrease, so it's fine to let the plants proliferate.
Great video. Good explanation
thank you! Thanks for watching.
Wow such a cute gardener.. 😊😃😃
Hi Luke. Love your videos! Always so educational. I have Ozark Beauties, Seascape, Allstar and Eversweet Everbearing varieties planted outside and some growing in hydroponics. Winters in Oklahoma are hellacious. Temps can range from 50 one day to -18 the next and from 2 inches of ice to sunshine to snow in a 48 hour period. I'd like preserve my strawberries through winter and plan to plant them closest to an outside wall in the fall (they're in containers now). After mulching, do you think that's enough or is there more that can be done to ensure they survive? Also is it possible to overwinter in the fridge?
Thank you! That means a lot to get that kind of feedback. I mulch mine with leaves during the winter and uncover them in the spring. They do fine and they love it! I haven't gotten any pain and suffering complaints from them at least ;)
Hello! I know it's been a few years but I wanted to ask which variety you liked the best and which had the best flavor?
Excellent video, thanks.
Thank you for this great video.
Good video answered all my questions thx
Sweet!! Can't wait!!!
Thanks!
I learned a lot thanks.
