  • As marijuana use becomes more prevalent among younger generations, Christians find themselves grappling with a dilemma: seeking biblical guidance on a topic that is not explicitly addressed in the Bible. While there are no direct scriptural references to marijuana, including its various names like weed, pot, herb, ganja, bud, Mary Jane, reefer, skunk, blaze, spliff, kush, or the chronic, we must explore what insights the Bible offers regarding recreational marijuana use.
Does the Bible offer any answers on the topic of recreational marijuana use?

It says to only worship God and to give Him your anxieties. I was addicted to this life destroying substance for 20 years and tried many times to quit... it was only after being saved that i realized using it was planning a wedge between myself and God and this is idolatry. I prayed about it and asked for His help in ending this addiction.... I've since been sober for 2.5 years, which is the longest period of sobriety since age of 13. My entire life has changed.
I pray that anyone else struggling with this finds the peace that God has granted me with sobriety.

Why don't you just stop? It is non-addictive and non-habit forming. You aren't addicted. You are vain. Watch videos of alcoholics dying. That is addiction. Cannabis is an anti-inflammatory that has not only helped combat alcohol and heroin/opioid addictions it has also been shown to protect the liver, brain, and other organs from the alcohol, drugs, and even the garbage fast food that kills more people in a minute than cannabis has in human history. Cannabis has saved more people from the grips of addiction than you could count in a lifetime. But here you are, acting the fool so strangers will give you a two second hit of dopamine with a "like". @@normalisoverratedthat’s what the serpent said to Eve... as someone saved out of drug use, I would warn you that shamanism is defined as the use of drugs to contact the spirit realm. Witchcraft in the Bible is pharmakia in Greek and refers to the cutting of roots and herbs for the sake interacting with spirits. Just because moderate use makes one creative doesn’t make it Holy or sanctified. Btw, the #1 rule of witchcraft is if it works do it, and if it doesn’t discard and find something that does. So gauging this from a “it’s effective in making me creative” is the wrong approach. The Bible does expressly forbid the use of roots and herbs to interact with the spirit realm and smoking pot is nowhere authorized in all of Scripture. Jewish tradition holds that drug use was taught to mankind by demons. Now you’ve been warned so when you stand before King of kings and LORD of Lords you will be without excuse. Question is will you humble yourself and repent? Or continue in your hardness of heart?

Many people are told that "legalizing marijuana" will decrease prison populations because, as the rhetoric goes, there are a lot of people in prison for marijuana possession. I am a retired Corrections Captain, and I know that people are not serving lengthy prison sentences solely for marijuana possession. Many times some sort of illegal drug possession is one crime among others that gets a person convicted. But a small amount of marijuana possession is not worth the effort for many law enforcement officers to prosecute. However, when they arrest someone for being intoxicated and driving a vehicle and injuring others and carrying illegal firearms, and that person is in possession of marijuana, then the police will include that charge. People that advocate for the legalization of marijuana as a money saving idea are deliberately twisting statistical information, which is to say they are lying. Legalizing marijuana as a cost saving measure for states and municipalities is a farce.

Brother I appreciate this so much as I have numerous people have come and asked me about this and its difficult in a way because many veterans I know from my military years and time with Wounded Warriors as well as The Warrior Resilience Center use this for medicinal purposes. My conviction is that there is a very fine line between being in extreme pain daily and using the excuse to be high all day. For those that are believers I can't stress enough for them to pray on it. Ive also met with some that are heavily medicated regardless because of injuries. This is going to be a much bigger issue we need to navigate scripturally as the tens of thousands of veterans retiring after 10 years of middle eastern wars feel the toll taken on families and friends. The really hard questions need to be asked of our brothers and sisters in arms but especially in CHRIST! If doctor prescribed , are you driving? However, scripture gives numerous examples where alcohol is seen in a positive light - while drunkenness is condemned, alcohol use is not. It would seem then that the dividing line is drawn on impairment.
Regarding Psalm 104:14-15, Matthew Henry noted: “Here is wine that makes glad the heart, refreshes the spirits, and exhilarates them, when it is soberly and moderately used, that we may not only go through our business, but go through it cheerfully. It is a pity that it should be abused to overcharge the heart, and unfit men for their duty, which was given to revive their heart and quicken them in their duty.”

Another side says moderation and the extremely liberal person says have your fill. There are a lot of passages that complete sobriety is the way to go. And there are passages that indicate that wine isn’t a bad thing and it’s to be enjoyed. So I don’t know. I really doubt Jesus made non alcoholic wine (grape juice) at the wedding in Cana. And there are many others that paint wine in a good light. What do we make of those passages?

The Bible does speak about marijuana, no, it doesn't give it a name (so there is no biblical justification of the street names) but it speaks about what it truly is, a seed bearing herb that God said was good. It is do different in composition than any of the other herbs in our pantries or cabinets. It doesn't have to be smoked to benefit from its proper use. However, it does require self-control, which if evidence of the Holy Spirit's inner presence, along with integrity and maturity.
Genesis 1:11, 12, "Then God said, let the earth bud forth the bud of the herb, that seedeth seed, the fruitful tree, which beareth fruit according to his kind, which hath his seed in itself upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth the bud of the herb, that seedeth seed according to his kind, also the tree that beareth fruit, which hath his seed in itself according to his kind: and God saw that it was good."
Natural herbs require seeds to reproduce, fruit requires seed to reproduce, men and mammals require seed to reproduce, etc.

Marijuana is indeed like wine... remind me, Didn't Jesus turn water into Wine at a Wedding Celebration?
also: Genesis 1:29 (Look it up)... That tells me that in Moderation and at appointed Times it is no sin. Just Like Wine: We are supposed to Avoid Drunkenness (I fail here, give wine to those sick at heart until they are filled with cheer, and strong drink unto those that are dying until they hurt no more - Two "Cut-Off" Gaurdrails?).
Also the Hebrew for Sweet Calamais is Qaneh Bosem (Kaw-nay Bos-em) a mispronunciation of the English Cannabis or rather: Vise Versa for which is a mispronunciation. Qaneh meaning Reed/Rod in English and Bosem (Plural, singular: Bos) means Aromatic or sweet smelling (Again: Describing BOTH Sweet Calamus AND Marijuana).
Also, etymologically we get Cannabis from the Scythians who are from one track through history descendants of Isaac (GOD said that Isaac's house would be known by his name: Scythian in Greek, Sakka in the Middle eastern tongues: I-SA-kka... I-SAI-thian from the Pronunciations SA-kka and SAI-thian respectively).
Then there is that in the ruins of one Jewish Temple archaeology excavation discovered from the Ancient Bible days (A temple in the Israel), [I think they said it was one of the temples that was built away from Jerusalem during the original "Two State Solution" for Israel, the Dividing of the land into the Kingdoms of Irael and Judah Respectively]: it had the incense burners that were recovered with TESTABLE MATERIALS still on that tray... one of the two came back as Marijuana.
IF we are Biblically Permitted to partake: IT is CLEAR by Scriptures that it is in Moderation Specifically and it is Drunkenness that is the Sin.
Therefore it is acceptable in Medical use, as well if not specifically for outside certain appointed uses/times (Such as My Medical issue, I just need to drop the Drunkenness).
Just stay away from Rastafarian Sorcery: Jesus Christ did NOT get lit to be in the Spirit or sense visions, that is a lie from the Pit of HELL. The Word of GOD says that No sorcerers, Idolaters, Whores/Whoremongers, Blasphemers, or Fornicators will see Heaven.
You do not NEED Marijuana in any regard to be in the spirit... it is more likely that such drunkenness (And all forms thereof) have an OPPOSITE Effect of SILENCE: that one cannot Discern the Spirit.
It is better to be filled with the Spirit and not drunkenness.
It is the Glory of GOD to conceal a Matter, and the Glory of Kings to Reveal it.
Let's seek Jesus and be filled with the Spirit and Give thanks for all that the Lord has made for us, and doubly so for teaching us how to delight in HIS creation as HE Designed it!! Seek the Lord in Sobriety, and Give Thanks!!

However the brain meds I go through and need, abuse my body horribly. If I don't take it to be intoxicated as a high schooler or Cheech and Chong would use, but use it for a medical based reason, is it really a bad thing?? The church I go to would certainly tell me not to use it but I am currently in disagreement. Especially because the affects of medical marijuana is the same as recreational, so its hard with this presented argument to see the difference.

With respect Pastor Walker I think the issue has more complexity than you deal with here. All Christians must agree that intoxication, inebriation, drunkenness or any equivalent state is sinful and never an option. However, with marijuana use (and many other substances) there are two further questions that we must answer: (i) Has God tasked the civil magistrate with the restriction of substances that can be used to intoxicate? and (ii) Are all uses of marijuana intoxicating? Answering (i) in the affirmative leads to prohibition, and in the negative leads to Christian advocacy for the legalization of all drugs. Answering (ii) is more difficult and comes down to the details of each substance. Finally, it is not proper to equivocate between drunkenness and "a state of altered consciousness", because the latter is ambiguous and Ps 104:15 ("wine to gladden the heart of man") is a kind of altering of consciousness.

Even so after that, the unregenerate man is free to choose whatever he desires, but he won't choose God. The regenerate, faithful, and saved man, on the other hand, is commanded to walk in the Spirit.
God has decreed the end from the beginning, and is sovereign over all things. In many cases, He allows the sinner to have their sin (in other cases He may thwart or abate sin). He's not making them sin, lighting the flame, or putting the substance in their mouth.

@@JarrettsAnnouncements You're missing the point. I agree with the passages warning us of the ravage of sinful behavior.
It's the Calvinism taught on G3. That & they teach "Total Depravity" from Romans 3:10-18. In that passage Paul is pulling from Psalm 14 & 53 of what the FOOL says & does... have you been swift to shed blood?
Ezekiel 36 is cool with me, because God can give any & everyone a heart of flesh. It is cult-like to teach only a special favored elite elect will be saved...all others can't be, they have a divine decree of reprobation upon them from God.
Isaiah 46 is spot on too. But unfortunately Calvinists conflate God's sovereignty with absolute determinism. God's foreknowledge of all events does not make Him the causal agent of all events (see Jeremiah 19:5 for one of many examples).

    • @JarrettsAnnouncements
      @JarrettsAnnouncements 3 місяці тому

@mikelyons2831 I get that you're after Calvinism, not the sinfulness of sin.
Help me understand- if Paul was quoting Psalm 14 and 53 about warning against shedding blood, was he himself using it out of context to make his point that both Jews and Greeks were under sin? It seems to me that when he was writing Romans 3:9, he roped in the concept that all were under sin to support his point. If that's the case, it seems fair to have the concept of depravity/inability stand.
The concept of the elect as Calvinists define it is a conceptual principle based on the indicative statements of Jesus in John 6 and 10. ‭I believe that His words are perspicuous.
"Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.” John 6:35-40 ESV
‭"No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day." John 6:44 ESV
‭"Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me,is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” John 10:25-30 ESV
The "decree" word in ESV for Jeremiah 19:5 can also be translated "speak," and if that's the case, it's not talking about ordainment. If it were to mean decree in the sense of ordainment, then there would be contradictions in Scripture with the more explicit presentations of concepts.
