Leslie O'Neal #91 of the San Diego Chargers
    San Diego Chargers (1986-95)
    Saint Louis Rams (1996-97)
    Kansas City Chiefs (1998-99)
1986 Defensive Rookie of the Year
132.5 sacks (tied with New York Giants Lawrence Taylor)
    768 career tackles
    6x Pro Bowl selection
The man was all over the field when he played the game. Not only did O’Neal get sacks but he also played the run and often dropped back to take on a tight end. He was a physical specimen and had unlimited physical ability.

If not for the Steelers playing twats the last week of tge season, which gave SD The2 seed, this game would have been in Miami. Pittsburgh got it the next week for giving this aweful team a chance. Sorry, Pittsburgh and Miami were far better teams then SD, and would have given a challenge in the SB. SD goes down as one of the luckiest teams to make a SB. Both blown out!!!!

During Marino era there was no defense. Shula stunk by 94 despite being only coach to have gone undefeated 1972. No defence no running game. Same problem Dan Fouts and Air Coryell suffered from 79-82. What the hell is a Gifford Neilson and a Stan Humphries. Poor Fouts, Marino and Moon never went anywhere.

Like the 1992 home playoff loss to the Bills, Miami got absolutely murdered by the opposing team running both ball(40 or more rushing attempts by each of them)...I think the Bills had close to 50(48) rushes in the 1992 game. You run the ball 40+ times that will keep Marino off the field, great game plan on their part. This further backtests to the 1990 playoff game at the Bills in which Bill rushed almost 40(37) times again. All of them were heartbreaking to watch as a teenager.

Shula and the OC cost Marino this game. Marino was destroying the Charger secondary and pass D, until the Dolphins decided to run the ball, and play conservatively up 21-6 in qrtr 3, on the road. If the Dolphins had a good defense I could understand playing ball control with that lead, but they didn't especially vs the pass. What a waste. They'd have played the Steelers on the road the next wk with at least a good chance to make it to the Super bowl. This was really the last realistic chance for the Dolphins-Marino team to make the big game. I don't think they'd have beaten San fran who were on another level that season, but at least Dan could have gotten there for the 2nd time in his career. Games like these are why while Shula was a great overall coach, he doesn't make my top mt. Rushmore all time coaches. Lombardi, Belichek, Walsh, Knoll, and Gibbs are ( were) better.

Dolphins went into half up 21-6. SD go the ball and took half of the 3rd Quarter on a drive that was stopped at the one. We all know ball should’ve been Miami’s at the 20 b/c Means fumbled and it hit pylon. But refs blew call so Miami ran the ball once and SD got a safety. Miami had 6 plays in the 3rd Quarter- 3 were pass plays / 2 were runs / one was a punt. In the 4th Quarter - Miami passed the ball 11 times and didn’t run one run play. So you say Shula lost this game by being conservative and running up 21-6.....but in reality....Miami passed the ball 14 times / ran 2 times / punted once and missed a FG in the second half. Don’t let facts ruin your argument though...LOL.

1994 was the last great chance Shula/Marino had a shot at the Super Bowl. By 1995, it was such mess as they spent too much on free agency which didn't pan out. They got waxed by the Buffalo Bills in the wild card and Shula retired at the end of the season.
This was the season Miami had a shot, after the first half they looked good. By the second half, they were afraid to run up the score for some reason. Why not? Go for the jugular, keep on attacking. The conservative play calling for some reason was their undoing. Marino was slicing that Chargers defense and then nothing.
    Awful.

I blame the loss on Marino; after the interference penalty, all Marino had to do was to gain short yardage either on runs or a percentage pass. Marino chose to try to win the game with his arm and the team never gained another yard. Marino's career in a nutshell...

    • @andrearel3703
      @andrearel3703 2 місяці тому

1000% Correct. But lazy Marino apologists won't hear of it. He threw an uncatchable pass into double coverage, and to the 4th WR. He had it in his head before the snap where he was going to throw the ball. Bad snap on the Stoyo kick. A lot less pressure at 38 yards instead of 48. Montana, Brady, or Manning win this game by making the right throw in that sitiation. Marino wasn't good enough. No defense, no running game bla bla bla. Look at the subtleties.

Ignoring a play a dolphin threw the ball to san diago, then they gave it back to Miami calling it a forward pass instead of a fumble. Then Chargers T.D. catch called out after two feet were down in the last minutes. Miami definitely wasn't screwed in this awfully officiated game. Im watching it now and it's the blind leading the blind. I cheered for the 49ers as a child so even then I wouldn't care who won. But Miami was gifted the game in the 4th and blew it as usual. Well, according to the information Dick Enberg received from Jerry Seeman, a ball fumbled forward inside the 10 on 4th down is marked at the spot of the fumble and not where the ball rolls. Personally, I think it was a touchback and should've been called as such. Odd game, and I find the 1990-'95 Dolphins interesting but flawed; depending on when one is watching them, they either looked great or it doesn't seem like it's all came together like it should. Must've been frustrating to be a Dolphins fan in this era, because the team had some good tools but weren't able to sustain momentum.

I agree 33 13 . Dallas did smack them and got robbed at the end. I’m a lifelong cowboys fan and remember as a kid flipping out over the call. Dallas was the best team in the league hands down but the 49ers were magical that year. Young deserved that one
