Steelers made the AFC title game in 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004. The only other team do make a conference title game every 10 years like that for four consecutive decades was the Raiders (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000). Speaks to how good an organization is to be that highly competitive across four eras of football.
Steelers had 0 super bowls in the 80's and 90's. They had a dynasty in the 70's and are pretty good now and they choked a lot in the 90's and 2000's AFC championship games.
That is impressive. But for you Steelers fans you should be happy the Steelers did not win the 84' AFC Title and that 94' AFC title because they would have lost both those Super Bowls to the 49ers.
Bill Cowher lost 4 AFC championship games at home, ironically enough, the only time he won the SB the Steelers became the first 6 seed to win 3 road games on the way to winning his only Super Bowl
Who's hating, just stating facts and I'd say definitely better than Tomlin is a reach, Tomlin has a higher regular season wining%, they both have been to 2 SBs and both went 1-1, slight edge to Tomlin in my book
Luke Hartman 1) he’s not “hating”, he’s “stating”. As in, stating facts. 2) Cowher is not better than Tomlin, by any measure. Tomlin still hadn’t had a losing season.
One of the best AFC Championship games ever.. The drama was so tight, any play would make or break a win or loss.. Also Natrone s 1rst down conversion running over 2 defenders, was one of the great runs Means had ever..
To the players no longer with us. Chargers: LB Junior Seau (suicide due to brain trauma), LB David Griggs (car accident), RB Rodney Culver (plane crash), LB Doug Miller (struck by lightning), C Curtis Whitley (drug overdose), DE Chris Mims (heart failure), DL Shawn Lee (heart attack), and LB Lewis Bush (heart attack). Steelers: OL Justin Strelzynk (suicide due to brain trauma). Just a tragic prologue to what was a classic game.
I pray to god that the chargers will win a super bowl before I die. I was born in 1998 so I wasn't able to see this game but I want to see my team at least win one before I die
They wouldve gotten blown out by any of the NFC's best teams..... Dallas, Green Bay, or San Fran. Also any of the Bills 1990-93 AFC Championship teams would've destroyed this Chargers team. Probably one of the worst teams ever to make it to the Super Bowl...at least that I've seen in my lifetime
I honestly don't watch sports anymore, but looking back at this game reminds me of why I used to. Chargers fan through and through RIP Junior the best ever do it
This game hurt, but it didn't really matter who won this game. Nothing was going to stop the 49ers in 1994. The real Super Bowl was played in San Francisco later that day. Once San Fran beat Dallas, it was a total formality.
@@capswole81 it doesn't matter. I think the 49'ners or Cowboys would've killed any team from the AFC. Buffalo was the dynasty in the AFC back then and the Redskins and Cowboys blew them out. It was no different this year and I wanted the Steelers to win this game. Super bowl XXIX was closer than it was. The 49'ners took their starters out by the 4th quarter.
I kind of disagree with you. In 1994, the Steelers had the number two defense in the league in both points allowed and yards allowed. Their pass defense was third in yards allowed and first in touchdowns allowed. Steve Young would not have had six touchdown passes against the Steelers defense. Unfortunately, their offense wasn't anything to write home about so San Francisco would still likely win.
That sounds about right. However, I believe Pittsburgh would have made it a good game. San Diego was complerely overmatched. How in the hell did they win this game?!
I remember listening to the game on the AFRTS radio broadcast out in the Persian Gulf. I wished I could have been home in San Diego to watch it with my family but I was happy the Chargers won.
Jesús Lozano As a Chargers fan, I'm glad he didn't get a ring with the Patriots. He had a big retirement ceremony with the Chargers, and then a few days later, he goes and signs with the Patriots.
Jose Mercedes No, I held nothing against Rodney. I was upset at Seau for having a huge retirement ceremony here and then going and signing with the Cheatriots. And Rodney's release had more to do with AJ Smith than Marty. AJ was a despicable human being who hated Marty and made roster decisions without consulting with Marty at all.
Well i guess that is true, but i will say that as pats fan that 2006 chargers team was the best i have ever seen and that playoff game, was probably so bad, like throwing 3 interceptions was bad, but the way the chargers imploded and Marty did not do such controlling his players and stupid turnovers and penalties and dumb playing by Marty on that 4th and 10 to go for it.
Jose Mercedes I agree, that 2006 Chargers team was the best team we've ever had. They definitely should have beaten NE that day. But it's hard for me to put the blame at Marty's feet. Yes, the 4th and 11 decision was not wise, however the Chargers still would have won had it not been for Eric Parker and Marlon McCree fumbling the ball. It's hard for me to blame an HC for fumbles.
I was at my house watching this with my good luck Steeler helmet on TV as i always did. This had to be the most crushing Steeler playoff loss ever. I was so stunned. And there would be some crushing losses in next few years too.

as a Steelers fan, this was the most gut-wrenching devastating loss I can remember. Heavy favorite at home, have a lead in the second half that dwindles away, tantalizing late game hope, and that devastating goal line stand. I'm not saying this Steelers squad would have beaten that stacked 49ers team (NFC Championship game was probably the de facto Super Bowl), but it doesn't make this loss hurt any less.
It’s quite incredible that SD won both playoff games to get to the SB with very uninspiring pass offense and defensive statistics in wi the game. The crazy dream became the completely expected nightmare when the faced a loaded SF 49ers team in two weeks in the SB.
I watched this game live as a young kid. I remember this being the first time a sporting event really affected me. I was devastated the Steelers lost this game. I was too young to really be that upset over the 92 NL championship series vs the braves. But I distinctly remember this game really hurting. The first of many heart breaks for this Steelers team until they finally got a Superbowl in 05. For a time there I just thought we would be tortured into watching great Steelers teams constantly falling short in games they probably should have won. Thank God for Ben haha.
This didn't hit me until after the Super Bowl because I was more focused on the 9ers beating the Cowboys. I really became die hard for the Steelers after this game.
I watched this game anyone that wants to see how one person single handedly took over a game should watch junior seau was unbelievable best chargers game period.
Anybody got the Chargers radio call of this game? Only heard it one time, and would love to see it preserved....some pretty emotional commentary at the end.
A hard fought AFC Championship game that year it was... Brutal shots Humphries and O'Donnell took.. The 49ers were stacked that year. It would of been a daunting task whoever had to face them.
I got so drunk watching this game. 40 people crammed in a living room losing our minds. We drove to the stadium to greet them when they returned. Greatest Chargers game ever.
27:58 - 28:10 Natrone means is underrated due to his shorter career. But his prime years, like here, he was a beast. As solid of a powerback as anyone at the time.
I still can’t believe Pittsburgh lost that game. They literally lost because they gave up two big plays, and they didn’t convert in the red zone. A Pittsburgh/San Francisco Super Bowl would have been far more entertaining than the one we got. I still think San Francisco would have won, but I don’t think Pittsburgh would’ve gotten housed like the Chargers did…
I remember being so pist when san Diego won as they beat my dolphins in the divisional round. But I miss this football the old stadiums the uniforms even the refs uniforms, but it was football at its best and I miss starter apparel
All Neil O'Donnell had to do was step into that last pass and fire it to B. Foster and its a T.D, instead he feels the rush punks out and lets it go off his back foot, batted down game over. For me personally the most heartbreaking Steeler loss in my life.
I remember hearing from the Chargers players and media how Pittsburgh players had already made a Super Bowl rap video, as well as making hotel reservations in advance of this game as if they had already won. They were so overconfident, and this made the Chargers victory that much sweeter. It was also nice to see the Chargers plane land in San Diego with 70k plus fans waiting for them to return to the Murph to celebrate
Such an exciting game. Pittsburgh was by far a better team but San Diego had the better plan. Has there ever been a better pair of championship games than 1994? I think the Steelers were plagued with overconfidence. They booked a recording studio to make a rap video the week of this game. "I hear they're selling that video for half price now," from a Chargers player after the game.
Still bizarre that Pittsburgh lost this game. Really just a couple plays where they didn't own it. And both of those plays were 43-yard TDs. O'Donnell actually played fairly well, but the play-calling became uninspired when they needed it most. Also, Seau was a BEAST.
PIT choked big time in this one, a mark of Bill Cowher and Marty Schottenheimer coached teams. They were king of the 10-6/11-5 record, then get bounced in the first or second round.
Was working the day this was broadcast. Only now watching it 26 years later. This '94 Steelers defense was suffocating, but apprently was prone to lapses. Chargers capitalized brilliantly on those few opportunities. Kudos to them. Although I believe the Steelers would have fared better against Young & co.
This was an epic punk job the Chargers pulled off here back in Jan 1995...whats hilarious is the whole week prior to this game Steelers fans were running their BIG mouths on sports talk radio sayin..."You guys dont have a chance..warm weather team comin into our house in the cold weather..blah..blah..blah..and I almost forgot..Steelers were so confident they were gonna have a cakewalk..they made some lame ass video about them goin to the Super Bowl...thats what I heard anyway..
gdub454: I remember after the Chargers won this game, I went to the stadium with my Dad later that night to welcome the team home. The stadium was PACKED with 70,000 people. While we were waiting for the team to arrive, they played footage of the Steelers bragging about their Super Bowl plans on the Jumbotron, lol.
Funny, the Steelers did something similar this past 2017 playoff season. They so overconfident that they were going to meet New England in the AFC Championship, that they forgot all about Jacksonville and their monster D. Of course The Jags stomped the Steelers in the Divisional round.
Kelli Gutierrez same here I tried to remain a fan but I still can't get rid of the anger about how the Chargers left my hometown San Diego for here (Los Angeles)

One of the Chargers starting offensive linemen that year Joe Cocozzo is from my hometown of Mechanicville, NY. He was a rookie that year I believe
So sad for the Chargers that so many players died on this 1994 Super Bowl team
Same thing kinda happened to the 1984 Padres...the San Diego Curse
Like who?? (besides Seau) just curious

This was literally 25 years ago... Man I'm old.
It will be 25 years soon next year.
26 years now
I turned 4 in November 94 so i was like 3 during this game
Steelers made the AFC title game in 1974, 1984, 1994, and 2004. The only other team do make a conference title game every 10 years like that for four consecutive decades was the Raiders (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000). Speaks to how good an organization is to be that highly competitive across four eras of football.
But New England has only been good since Brady came, Steelers have been good for years and years.
Steelers had 0 super bowls in the 80's and 90's. They had a dynasty in the 70's and are pretty good now and they choked a lot in the 90's and 2000's AFC championship games.
Patriots are close 1985, 1996, 2006, 2016
That is impressive. But for you Steelers fans you should be happy the Steelers did not win the 84' AFC Title and that 94' AFC title because they would have lost both those Super Bowls to the 49ers.
Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot ravens have been to 4 in 17 years...
Bill Cowher lost 4 AFC championship games at home, ironically enough, the only time he won the SB the Steelers became the first 6 seed to win 3 road games on the way to winning his only Super Bowl
thanks to the refs though vs seattle.
Tomlin still hadn’t had a losing season.
cityofchamps66 You definitely weren’t “hating”
Just stating facts.
He nearly lost a 5th to the Colts and 'Captain Comeback' Jim Harbaugh the next season.
Just a tragic prologue to what was a classic game.
damn...wtf
My God
wonder if steroids played a part in the heart attacks? Athletes are supposed to be healthy but not football players apparently
Struck by lighting ? That’s a chargers way to go out
I pray to god that the chargers will win a super bowl before I die. I was born in 1998 so I wasn't able to see this game but I want to see my team at least win one before I die

Ikr lol they got waxed
The Chargers would gladly the 1994 Super Bowl for the 2006 Super Bowl!
Chargers fan through and through RIP Junior the best ever do it
i was 20 years old this broke my heart
This was a 2nd place game with that loaded 49ers team that won
Dennis Gibson was a monster on that last Steelers drive. He was in on every stop.
This game hurt, but it didn't really matter who won this game. Nothing was going to stop the 49ers in 1994.
The real Super Bowl was played in San Francisco later that day. Once San Fran beat Dallas, it was a total formality.
One of the biggest chokes in AFC history.
Wrong
I kind of disagree with you. In 1994, the Steelers had the number two defense in the league in both points allowed and yards allowed. Their pass defense was third in yards allowed and first in touchdowns allowed. Steve Young would not have had six touchdown passes against the Steelers defense. Unfortunately, their offense wasn't anything to write home about so San Francisco would still likely win.
That sounds about right. However, I believe Pittsburgh would have made it a good game. San Diego was complerely overmatched. How in the hell did they win this game?!
We miss you like crazy Bolts. Come home soon! :(

I remember listening to the game on the AFRTS radio broadcast out in the Persian Gulf. I wished I could have been home in San Diego to watch it with my family but I was happy the Chargers won.
I am glad Seau was able to experience the SB experience with the Chargers :) Sadly, even with NE, he didnt get a ring.
It's hard for me to blame an HC for fumbles.

as a Steelers fan, this was the most gut-wrenching devastating loss I can remember.
Great game. I remember watching this live. RIP Jr. Seau & David Griggs.
1:39:45 2nd most important play in SD Charger History. 1:50:00 MOST important play in SD Charger History !
Tony Martin is an underappreciated receiver.
Steelers sure had their chances to win this game. Seau played 1 helluva game.
Neil O'donnell belongs on the Cowboy's Ring of Honor

A hard fought AFC Championship game that year it was... Brutal shots Humphries and O'Donnell took.. The 49ers were stacked that year. It would of been a daunting task whoever had to face them.

I got so drunk watching this game. 40 people crammed in a living room losing our minds. We drove to the stadium to greet them when they returned. Greatest Chargers game ever.
27:58 - 28:10
Natrone means is underrated due to his shorter career.
I agree, the stadiums were iconic.. & the unis were both classic & well designed back then.
1:51:44 Rookie Rodney Harrison celebrating.
All Neil O'Donnell had to do was step into that last pass and fire it to B. Foster and its a T.D, instead he feels the rush punks out and lets it go off his back foot, batted down game over. For me personally the most heartbreaking Steeler loss in my life.

For some reason I always loved Neil O’Donnell’s voice. You could always hear White-19 Blue-19 and later 214 set hut.
"I hear they're selling that video for half price now," from a Chargers player after the game.
the silence and shock from steelers fan still makes me smile.
Same
Steelers overlooked this game they should have won this superbowl that year this team was stacked
No the 49ers where to good no way in hell the Steelers would beat them
Still bizarre that Pittsburgh lost this game.
Perfectly summed up
Was working the day this was broadcast. Only now watching it 26 years later. This '94 Steelers defense was suffocating, but apprently was prone to lapses. Chargers capitalized brilliantly on those few opportunities. Kudos to them. Although I believe the Steelers would have fared better against Young & co.
This was an epic punk job the Chargers pulled off here back in Jan 1995...whats hilarious is the whole week prior to this game Steelers fans were running their BIG mouths on sports talk radio sayin..."You guys dont have a chance..warm weather team comin into our house in the cold weather..blah..blah..blah..and I almost forgot..Steelers were so confident they were gonna have a cakewalk..they made some lame ass video about them goin to the Super Bowl...thats what I heard anyway..
lollol..good one..:>D
gdub454: I remember after the Chargers won this game, I went to the stadium with my Dad later that night to welcome the team home.
They got creamed in the super bowl next year too! Cowher needed help to win in 2005! Very questionable calls by the officials !
