Found this song recently on Reddit and can't get enough of it. I've got two different interpretations of it coexisting in my head and I'm here for both of them. The first, and I'm assuming the intended meaning, is a celebration of intense, intimate, friendship between men. And I love it. We need to normalize those sorts of relationships. Too often it feels like people are too quick to label these friendships as "gay". Allow men and boys to share their feelings with each other and love each other because that's what makes friendship work. I've got friends from childhood to present who I've loved intensely. Friend groups with other boys that were my rock. They were (and are) everything to me. Yet...I also love this song because even though I am someone who believes everything I said in the first paragraph, I am also bi. I am attracted to other men and while I value my friendships with other men, I also value my ability to form romantic relationships with men too. And doggonit I like how this song could read as a gay love song I could share with a bf one day. That's how I'm reading it, when I'm not reading it as a celebration of friendship. It's both to me. And that's the great thing about music. It can be about so many different things at once. And I guess all of that speaks to an aspect of my childhood and adolescent development, that is learning to tell the difference between the interest and excitement around boys I wanted to be friends with and go on adventures with and share our lives with vs. the attraction around boys I wanted to date and share my life with.
