Having grown up along the N&W between Williamson and Matewan West Virginia, this very passenger train "stream-liners" as we called them was a daily, common sight. The mighty steam locomotives, pulling hundreds of cars loaded with beautiful, shiny-rich hard eastern Kentucky and West Virginia coal... with a whistle so long and lonesome as to inspire and stimulated one's soul... This was my childhood America, and yes, I wish you could have been there to witness... this time of our country's pride and greatness. A time gone with the wind... A time never to be forgotten.

during my 25 year career on Southern and NS railways I worked on and around this living fire breathing beast of a machine several times, it is fascinating to watch. one night when the 611 was laying over at Hayne Yard I was assigned watch duty and spent the night shoveling coal in the fire box to keep the water hot to make steam for the Saturday morning excursion. sitting on that engine all night listening to the noises it makes was truly a once in lifetime experience.

    Beautiful!
A British lifelong rail enthusiast, I have also long been an admirer of those huge American steam locos: what a loading gauge you had to play with!
    Enormous outside cylinders ..... stunning.

Beautiful indeed John. My father lost his life, 1943, crushed by a rock fall, in a coal mining accident... I was four at the time... I often think of the war years and the contribution coal miners, here and in Britain made for the effort. Clearly, soldiers, sailors and airmen paid the greater price, even so, we must never forget the cost, the price paid by industrial workers.

+Blake Trafford - Mile Post Productions
According to Canadian Railway Observations' October 2015 issue
"Coming as a pleasant surprise to many of railfans, several trusted CRO sources reported the Canadian Pacific Railway is planning a cross-Canada tour with CPR's 4-6-4 H1b Hudson steam locomotive in the summer of 2017 for Canada's 150th birthday. In September, CP's website posted the company is seeking experienced crews and retired maintenance workers experienced with the maintaining the mechanical workings of steam locomotives.
This event with "The Empress" will be an ideal vehicle to showcase the Canadian Pacific Railway's rich history in Canada, and the railways vital importance to the development, settlement, and industrial growth of our great country. We can all hope this historic event guides to fruition!
However, that exciting steam news was followed by a troubling comment we received. A CP source indicated this could be the final official company event for CPR #2816, and she could be sidelined for good. He mentioned following the event in 2017, the locomotive could be earmarked for donation to a railway museum, (or as CP has done of late, possibly put up for auction sale). However what CP will do with the "Empress" following the Canadian event in 2017 is unknown at present. We can hope that where ever she goes, she will have a continued life in operation somewhere in Canada."

@Blue Mint Bubble They may look slow but American steam locomotives are nearly as fast while being much larger and powerful such as the Union Pacific Big Boy having a top speed of 80 mph pulling FAR FAR more freight than any European steam engine up and down the Rocky mountains and then you have Union Pacific 844 and her sisters with a top speed of 120 mph while being far larger and more powerful than the Mallard. American steam locomotives are powerful beast that need low tone powerful sounding whistles to match their brutish looks and power while UK steam locomotives are the midgets that need to make noise to be heard and are a bit faster (Mallard being 6 mph faster than UP 844 and her sisters...).
