I took a three hour Santa carving with Rick in the early 90's and I learned so much from him in a short period of time. His wife Ellen is also An excellent carver and walked around the class correcting our mistakes.

That brings back so many memories! Watching Rick Butz on PBS sparked my interest in wood carving. I still have the Santa I made in 1992 and it has become an important part of our Christmas decorating.
when I was a kid I used to come home from school and turn on PBS. They had a half hour of Bob Ross painting followed by a half hour of Rick Butz wood carving. I loved watching this stuff so much that I bought some DVDs. I don't think you could find them anymore.
Rick Butz is a relatively good woodcarver, but not so good with eyes, I have noticed. Harold Enlow has a few books out that illustrate a much better way to produce very nice faces, with excellent eyes, mouths, lips, and other great details. But for a beginner, Rick Butz will give you some cool projects to work on. I had his books back in the day, and carved the man portaging the canoe, which is a great project too.
