      Yeah the only thing you missed was neutralizing the bleach that could eat a hole in the shirt after Time goes by

    You need to use a peroxide/H20 mix to get that bleach to stop working or your shirt can get holes in it.

    I looked into your UA-cam page only to find 1 video. Wished there were more because of how detailed you are. I did my own research hours on hours looking on UA-cam and everyone did the fast route. Although tie dying is super fun. I’d like my art to stay as colorful as possible. Thank you for the awesome detail, tips and new information I received. Your guide tops all of UA-cam

    I've been playing around with reverse tie-dying and having mixed feelings with the outcomes. So I sought out videos on UA-cam to refine my techniques and tips from other tie-dye enthusiasts. Your video is by far the most helpful I've watched so far! Thank you for making a video that is informative and not just a rehashing of someone else's DIY video that was a remaking of another person's DIY idea they saw was trending. Your tips are tried and true methods from the artists themself. Thank you! 😊

    you can do a full soak in the soda ash, you just need to neutralize with peroxide between steps, this will also save you the time of rinising the bleach out. I also do a stronger ratio of soda ash to water, because the shirts already wet from the neutralizing solution, which would dilute the soda solution.

  • @alan_whoneedstiedye

    What not to do. Bleach must be neutralize with peroxide/water soak. Out White Bright and very hot water is much better.

    Quick question, do you think pre-soaking the shirt in soda wash before bleaching it could be helpful as opposed to sprinkling it on after rinsing out the bleach? Or would it be basically the same result?

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  8 місяців тому

      I added it after rinsing because I did not want the bleach to negate the effects of the soda ash. Worth a shot but my guess would be the results are not as saturated. I tried washing the shirt after bleach then soaking in soda ash and dyeing but re-spiraling the shirt meant the dye didn't saturate the bleached parts as well.

    Shirt came out great but I would have stopped the bleaching action with a quick soak in a water/peroxide solution 70/30. I also would have soaked in the water/soda ash mixture not sprinkled the powder, and used Urea in my dye mix. Other than that I ike your design very much.

      You need to neutralise the bleach or you will get holes in the shirt at a later date, I know this as it has happened to me when I first started doing reverse dyes a few years ago, I thought it was because I was using cheap t shirts, now Know it was the bleach that caused them.

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому

      So glad to hear it! I've done plenty of white shirts but never pastel colors. I would start by mixing the dye to 1/4 strength and see if that gets you what you're looking for

    • @TFJ70

      Forgot to add... On a white t-shirt to use the same process without the bleaching?

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому +2

      @@TFJ70 Yep, one thing to note is that the dye will bleed significantly on a white shirt so you can't afford to be as generous with the dye, ESPECIALLY if you want to keep white spaces. If you don't want any white and you don't mind colors bleeding, go crazy, but still be cautious of the center spiral because it can easily get muddy.

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому

      Hey Kayla! Bathing suits will probably be a synthetic and not 100% cotton so it's important to use a dye for synthetics like DyeMore from Rit. The other challenge is dying a small surface, it may be difficult to spiral. Either take the time to carefully spiral or try a different fold pattern like a crumple dye!

      I've had this happen as well! Not an issue with the bleach, most likely that the hoodie is not 100% cotton. The synthetic fibers won't bleach the same way cotton does. You can still try dying on top of the gray color!

      @@Levi-Salmon so I went and got the normal gallon I guess I had concentrate before testing it on junk shirts seems to be working better

      @@kylemoney01 nice! Make sure to dilute it with at least 1/3 water. It will still bleach the shirt enough but less risk of burning a hole right through the shirt

    Does the shirt have to be black? We have a bunch of royal blue shirts that nothing can be done with.

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому

      The only difference you will see is that the royal blue is still able to absorb dye so it's more difficult to predict what the final color will be. Definitely go for it, might be really cool.

    The craziest part is most of the other reverse tie dye videos I've watched say do NOT skip the step of neutralizing the bleach with hydrogen peroxide, yet you did?

    For rinsing etc. :
    Salad SPINNER = More time to play / less time gathering wrist and hand pain
    SALAD SPINNER
    or
    LAZY SUSAN
    EFFICIENT WATER WRINGING

    is there any chance the shirt can be too wet to take the bleach? i’m not getting the peach color, the black shirt is only turning dark brown. any tips?

      Sometimes certain shirts will just do that... I would try a different brand

    Would these tips work the same on thicker materials like hoodies?

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому +2

      Overall, yes. Although hoodies act up sometimes in unpredictable ways so you may have to experiment with different brands

    What temperature did you use for the final wash? It’s my first time doing a reverse dye and I don’t want to mess it up lol

      Yo! The Dharma Detergent says it works best with hot water so that's what I use!

    All of our bleach dyes end up falling apart after about 6 washes. (Bought from other people, not made myself)

      They likely arent rinsing the bleach out enough, some people say to neutralize it with peroxide.

    What problems did you have when soaking the shirt in soda ash?

    • @Levi-Salmon
      @Levi-Salmon  3 роки тому

      When I pulled it out of the soda ash solution the bleached parts of the shirt were darker than when I put it in there. Seems like some of the black from the shirt got in the liquid and made everything darker. The final result was a much duller dye.
