In the hope of aggravating you and to motivate you to continue with this channel all my SKX’s are J’s. I paid $700 plus for my 7, $500 plus for my 9, $400 plus for my 011, and $600 plus for my 173, not a J of course. Love them all. Thank you for posting.
The Triton is now actually available cheaper than the SKX 007 J versions. By the way, I was told the “wobbly” crown was done intentionally so that users do not forget to screw down the crown after adjustments.
@@TheShotenZenjin The crown is a "clutched" crown, much like the vostoks. If the crown takes a direct hit, it means the movement won't take a beating. It's a design carried over from the earlier mforce line. Feels weird, but is definitely deliberate.
Excellent hire on the editor, Jory! Passed his 6 month review. Captures the zaniness of the early channel days. Breaking the 3rd wall, trolling the trolls. Knows how to make videos fun to watch, that ragtime piano during the sales plug was a hoot!
Grabbed an SKX175 after seeing All Is Lost with Robert Redford earlier this year. Upgraded the movement and added a signed crown and now it’s almost perfect! Keep up the humor as well as the helpful content, Jory!
Have far too many SKX & other automatic DEEP dive watches, these days I'll just grab a simple Casio Duro for a quick trip out the door. It's a great alternative for almost any more serious dive watch...one that a real diver would actually dive with, (while the more expensive dive watches sit at home in their cases).
Vostock Scuba Dude; I wear this $70 watch to work in the yard, chop wood, and so on. It's my default "beater" watch because i cannot find the Casio I put away in the mid 1980's when I purchased new a Rolex 1016 Explorer. I need to find that Casio! Thanks for posting. Keep at it!
I got my first automatic six months ago. I was looking for an SKX, but couldn't find one in my country. I was recommended a turtle, fell in love with the SRPC25K1, and I couldn't be happier. I don't know why this variant of the turtle doesn't get as much attention as a few of the others, its dial is one of the most gorgeous I've seen at this price point.
The amphibias hand wind, mine does no problem. The wobbly crown is to protect the movement from damage if the crown were to get dinged. I think if you can get one around 80.00 bucks its definitely worth it. They’re fun to mod too.
I also have the K version and didn't go for the hype of the "J". Since then, however, my life has been ruined....I get like every red light. I am missing socks, man! I mean, where could the other one have gone?! The price of gas has gone up again. I used to understand Daylight Savings Time - now, I don't get it. Should have gotten the "J" version! Don't make the same mistake I made, get the "J"!
Devil's Advocate time. Build your own or have a trusted specialist/jeweler assemble an SKX from a preexisting mod case with sapphire crystal, NH36 movement, ceramic bezel and other parts. It can add up if you go crazy with customization, however, but I have had about 10 Seiko mods assembled that I love dearly. It's almost like having a blank canvas for you to have your own watch done your way..
The crown on vostoks is meant to feel wobbly it is part of the design to make the crown stem easier to repair or something like that, so will it may feel flimsy, it is actually makes the watch tougher because it is also harder to break if you forget to push the crown in our bash the watch around
Deep Blue. The NATO Diver is essentially an SKX but with better specs: sapphire crystal, helium escape, 300 meters, Seiko NH36 movement, and multiple dial/bezel/strap/bracelet options @ $249 on strap and $332 on as bracelet. BUT using discount code "blue" gives you 40% off so $149 and $199 instead. You should also checkout the Diver 1000 and Master 1000 models as possible SKX replacements. They have many other great models also.
Some skx upgrades (sub $300) : - any helmwatch. - phoibos reef master - Islander - Orient Triton (if you can find it at $300 which isn't easy). - Orient Kamasu
I live in Spain. The price here is between 260 (without the original box and not sealed warranty almost all the times) and 360 € in some websites. In a Seiko store or other local seller the price is more than that.
Two great options from U-S based Bernhardt Watch Co: the Binnacle and the Corsair. When on sale, both can be had well under $300, with sapphire crystal, 120 click bezel, and top quality case and bracelet. I own the Binnacle and it is far superior to my SKX in every way except lume.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it before, but since its been discontinued the SKX013 has skyrocketed in price. It is out of stock on nearly every shop. And the ones that do have it you'll be lucky if you can find it for under 280. So maybe the 007 won't jump in price but the 013 certainly did.
I agree with you about Vostok. I do a lot of business in Central and Eastern Europe and these watches sell for $15-$20. The locals laugh because they can't believe America's fascination with the brand. As for the Citizen Promaster, great watch. I wear this one at the beach and while snorkeling.
That's because the locals shit on their own heritage and everything non-western is no good, even if it is. Reliable, great WR, pretty accurate, slender and light. I wore a black Vostok (tank troops issue) during my military service in Belgium and it took every beating like a champ. I don't wear it any more, but it still is in perfect working order after almost 30 years...
I own a Seiko SKX009, but it has to be said my Citizen NH8381-63L 'Blue Razor' blows it out of the water with hand winding and (on my particular watch) COSC levels of accuracy whilst my Seiko's accuracy seems to be all over the shop. If Seiko aren't careful with its new '5' range, Orient could be in danger of eclipsing it.
The SKX is being discontinued so a good alternative is the Citizen Promaster. Is the equivalent of saying... The Cleveland Browns have been discontinued so a good alternative is the Pittsburg Steelers. Or
And it, too, is iconic. I am seriously thinking of getting one. How tough are these? Standard quartz advantages in the shock resistance level compared to mechanicals?
Orient Tritón would be an alternative to Seiko Sumo, not Seiko SKX. the movement of the Triton is 40n5a the same one that uses the saturation pro which is at the level of 6r15
Brand new SKX007 j1 and j2 models (and to a certain extent, the SKX013) are becoming quite hard to find, and that, of course, is driving prices up. If you can get one of these watches for around $250-$280 you should definitely get one over the K model if want to take any future re-sale value into consideration. I think there is no difference in quality between the J and K versions, but for many SKX collectors, “quality” is just not a factor. We just want that “21 jewels” on the dial! The SKX013 is a popular niche market, especially with the “small-wristed”, and I think there will always be a good demand for this lovely little watch, even though it isn’t a j model. New 013s, in the box with tags, could well fetch over $400 in a few years time.
I bought the J variant...$430CAD. I regret nothing! Also, the Citizen Pro-Master example that you used in your video is a more entry level variant and does not have a sapphire crystal. However. The higher end Pro-Masters do indeed have sapphire crystals.
Maybe you have mentioned this brand before, but what do you think of Rado? I only discovered them recently, and I'm overall quite interested in some of the models they have. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
This has probably been mentioned TLDR. The Citizen BN0151 that you recommended is 42mm w/o crown and has mineral crystal. Still an excellent watch nonetheless.
Great video as always. Now a couple questions non watch related. My nerdy 37 & 34 yo sons would love one of those T-shirts. Where did she get that? Second. What brand are your eye glasses. I’ve been looking for clear almost round glasses. Thanks. Keep up the good work. Always enjoy your videos.
Bought a Vostok amphibia, scuba dude, after watching yt videos and reading loads of great comments. Must admit I agree with Jory, I'm so disappointed with it. Looks like a kids watch to me, I admire the unique design features, but it gets no wrist time at all. Should sell it.

Not sure if you have noticed but there is currently a flood of fake SKX stock hitting the web at the moment. They use a cheap aftermarket replacement case, dial, rubber strap and hands kit that’s on on eBay for $70 USD then they stick in 7S26 movements that are laying around everywhere have from the modding community basically giving them away. The lume And bezel on this kit is horrible. I’d love you to throw a video out about this, I bought the J version because it was one of the few 007,s I could find that I felt sure was legitimate.
Deep Blue model is Diver 1000. Similar to skx013 in size yet adds sapphire crystal, 5x the depth rating, better Seiko movement as it hacks and handwinds. And it is a better value. $249 on rubber strap $332 on stainless steel bracelet. But with the discount code "blue" 40% off retail price making it $149 and $199 instead.
Any thoughts on the Deep Blue 300m diver? It has a sapphire crystal and the NH35 movement!! And it is slightly larger for my slightly larger wrist. Any thoughts from Jory?

That Orient is huge. Amphibia is a toy (??) Citizen and Turtle, excellent but huge again. And then a brand nobody heard of... quite the alternatives lol. Not an SKX fanboy anyway (never have, never will), but I'd say check out the MiniTurtle (for you Seiko lovers), Hamtun Kraken h2 (never gonna beat those specs), ProDiver (yes, the Invicta), Phoibos p007 (if you don't mind a few Rolex cues) and various Phoiboseses (sky is the limit, for OK prices). I own 4 of the foramentioned (Kraken on the way), as well as the real Turtle and a Padi Sami, and they are all. Way. Better than the overpriced and underspecced SKX. Love my toy Amphibia too, btw ;-)

Hey dude, one thing to mention: This is not Boctok, the right writing with western letters is Vostok . That means East in the russian language.
Haha, that was gold... loved it
jo JITSO, forgive misspelling, wearing 007, looooook dangerous, sarcastic, just missing the gun for the opening scene of Casino ROYYYYYYYAAAAALLL
