    I took my 2000 to the dealer for a recall service. They said that's an old truck you should buy a new one. I just laughed.

      So dumb. These trucks and 4runners with the 3.4 l v6 engine are essentially bulletproof. Yeah they're kinda slow but still they can last 200 to 400k miles easily. Seen a video of an older man with a 97 4runner with almost 700k miles on it. Simple, easy to work on, and very strong vehicles.

    • @gwsmith76
      @gwsmith76 3 роки тому +15

      @@4runner4life7 I have a 97 with the 2.7l with 463,000 miles in it. It's very underpowered stock so I put on a small turbo, cold air intake with a K&N filter, headers with an exhaust system, had the head ported and polished, light weight flywheel and a ceramic clutch. It has plenty of power now and most of it was bolt on except the head. Spent close to $4500 on the upgrades in 2004 and other than a couple oil leaks, wear parts and regular maintenance I've had no issues. The 2.7 is just a larger 22RE and those motors are some of the best that have ever been made. Designed in the 70s and Toyota still uses them (with improvements) in new vehicles today. I'd take a 2.4 or 2.7 over the 3.4 without question.

      The warranty on the frame for the recall is only 15 years if they find a rusty hole on it, they will replace it
      My truck is 2003 and my first inspection for it was at the time of the recall and I was told that it needs only to be under coate it.
      In 2018 one of the rear shock snap off the frame, a big rusty hole on the frame. I took my tacoma again and they replace it. 👍
      It was about 6 months before finishing the FIFTEEN YEARS WARRANTY FOR THE RECALL .

      Bought my 2000 Tacoma 4x4/auto trans with 4 cyl 3RZ FE engine brand new. 20 yrs later and over 365,000 miles, it still runs, shifts, and drives strong on all original engine, trans, CV joints, shocks, wheel bearings, alternator, starter. Just had to replace the 3 U-joints for the 1st time, mine has the "split drive shaft". About 8 yrs ago, I had 1 of the 2 coils go bad, but we thought it was the fuel pump at the time, so I threw away a perfectly good Denso fuel pump & replaced with a cheap "life time" Carquest pump. Only then did I learn the bad coil caused the main computer to close the circuit to the fuel pump as a safety feature, to keep those 2 cylinders from filling with fuel & destroying the engine. I just had to recently replace that cheap Carquest fuel pump..........and you can bet I paid the $100 extra to get the good OEM Denso pump. Other than normal maintenance such as brakes, hoses, and belts, she's all original. Only on my 3rd set of spark plugs & 2nd set of plug wires. Truck uses NO oil, and after 4,000 miles, it barely seeps a little less than 1/4 of a quart due to slight leaks that happen ONLY while driving. Oh, I did replace the valve cover gasket ( leaking ) and the cams & top of the head looked SO clean.........no build-up, deposits or "varnish" look anywhere. I believe my little Taco is gonna reach 1 million miles..........or at the very least, double the miles it has now. If and when it needs it, I'll rebuild this engine and keep the truck before I go in debt on a new one. No wonder they fetch higher prices on the used market. Damn dependable & durable. I live in Florida, so I don't have to worry about salted roads causing rust.

    2004 Pre-runner Double Cab, 510,000 + miles, original engine, original transmission, original muffler. Original owner. No oil leaks, same exact gas mileage as new, 24 miles per gallon. It just keeps going. Zero accidents. I do the maintenance and fix what needs to be fixed but nothing super major. Change the oil regularly and use higher octane gas. Upgraded the stereo with a nice Kenwood, power amps, Morel Speakers and a subwoofer. It’s great. Why sell it? A new one is double what I paid in 2004. From $24K to $50k. Tried to get a new one. Waiting time is 8 months to a year. No deals anymore because of chip shortages.

      At 170k make sure it's on the 2nd-3rd timing belt & all the parts that go along with it every 90k...burned dash lights is common/broken door handles or locks too..make sure the frame isn't rotted from inside out (very common if not in Tx or cali it's whole life) ppl will try to hide it also. suspension & brakes might be due for a overhaul...aftermarket intakes are a can of worms also. Make sure the coolant/tranny fluid has been flushed at least once in its life... buying one as close to stock with few owners Is important to me! when you start adding bigger wheels or tires/light bars etc... so it can look "cool" is when they start having issues

    My 2001 trd off-road is at 226,000 salt-crusted miles and keeps trucking.
    Not only is it a good truck, but it really lends itself to being worked on and fixed. Something modern vehicles aren't built for.
    I ended up getting frame issues (it completely rusted out nearly severing the pickup bed from the cab) but because I'm in New England I was able to bring the truck to Auto Rust Technicians in RI - they make the Safe-T Caps that are well known in the old Toyota circles and they did an amazing job restoring my frame. for about $1200 the frame is solid as a rock and the problem areas better than new. I changed the timing belt for the first time at 200,000 miles (recommended at 90,00) without issue (but it's a serious job).

    ATTENTION ALL OWNERS OF TACOMA 4x4 WITH 2.7 LITER 3RZ-FE ENGINE: I bought mine new in 2000 with automatic transmission. 20 yrs later and 362,000 miles, it still runs & drives great. A weak point for this particular engine NOT mentioned in this video is: CAST IRON EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, THEY ABSOLUTELY SUCK. They crack fairly soon, usually within 6 months to 2 years. I finally got sick & tired of replacing cast iron manifolds, so I recently installed a stainless steel long-tube header. WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE. The truck has low-end torque & take off like it NEVER had before, even when new. DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR, INSTALL A QUALITY S.S. LONG-TUBE HEADER. I've owned several vehicles over the years where I installed headers with no other mods. Slight improvement in performance. BUT THE 3RZ-FE ENGINE RESPONDS GREAT TO A LONG-TUBE HEADER. I was amazed, really. The truck is now more fun to drive than ever before, because it's no longer "a dog off the line". The automatic transmission even behaves better all throughout the rpm range. Before, ya just about had to floor it to kick down a gear for passing slower traffic. But with the header, I only need to give the throttle a decent stab & it kicks down a gear so much easier. My transmission has always demonstrated nice, clean & crisp shifts, but the way its running now, I can tell this transmission has tons of life left in it. All because of installing a header. DO IT. TRUST ME. It blows my mind how the engineers created such a nice 8-port long runner aluminum intake, yet they defeated most of its potential with those damned cast iron manifolds. A long tube header really wakes this 2.7 liter engine up. Had I known how well this engine responds to a header, I would've done it years ago.

      @@andyramz2703 A quality stainless steel header set would absolutely improve the performance of your Toyota V6 engine Andy. But I do need to take this opportunity to correct myself on the type of header I'm running. "Stupid me", in my earlier comment here, I kept calling it "a long-tube header". WRONG, it's known as a TRI-Y header. The tubes are not as long as a true "long tube header". The Tri-y header has shorter tubes that go into a collector, and then into a single down-pipe, and the down-pipe connects to the catalytic converter. A long-tube header has all the pipes running all the way to the catalytic converter. Tri-y headers are best for every day driving, working, and performance, because it gives you more power in the low and mid rpm ranges. Conversely, a long-tube header doesn't usually show performance improvement at low & mid rpm's, but it really comes on strong during the high rpm range........and high rpm's is strictly for racing. Regardless, a high quality header ( or set of headers for a V6 or V8 engine ) really helps any engine breathe better, the heads are able to flow more. Try it. You'll thank me later Andy, seriously. BEWARE: Regardless of whether you're running factory stock exhaust manifolds or headers, if your engine has years on it and especially high mileage, say over 250,000 miles, you should really worry about the catalytic converter being nearly clogged up, and that puts too much back-pressure & strain on your engine. I just removed my catalytic converter for this very reason, and now it runs even better. If ya live in a state where it's legal, just remove the catalytic converter altogether, and have a muffler shop just run a pipe on back to the muffler ( or mufflers ). New catalytic converters are crazy expensive. This would be illegal to do in the state of California. ( I don't see how anyone can stand to live in California.......that state is really becoming a communist regime. )

      @@andyramz2703 Well, if ya had to buy new cats because of local laws, that's ok, and at least ya know they won't be clogging up on you for years to come. I'm convinced that you would be tickled to death with a set of quality headers on your V6 Toyota. It will still run as quietly as it does now, because ya still have your muffler, or "mufflers" if ya have duel exhaust. But imagine your engine really coming to life with using only half as much throttle, whenever ya have to merge into faster traffic. It makes it feel like you have a bigger engine, lol. The headers do increase horsepower, and your engine really does run better. When driving normally, you should also get slightly better gas mileage with headers. Certain engines throughout history came with factory headers!!! Laslty: CONGRATS on buying your classic Tacoma at such a great price Andy!!!
